115 I don't particularly like this painting, but I do like the style, if that makes sense. I looked up the artist and his style is listed as Realist. I can see that, I guess. At first I considered the background to be sort of impressionistic almost? But, if I look at it as a photograph, it makes sense in a portrait to have shallow depth of field to blur the background. I wish I'd taken more art history classes sometimes.

6/10, nice but not hangable.

125 Interesting and effective painting. The background is indistinct, verging on abstract. The hat is painted relatively loose and soft. That all makes the girl's face and posture pop out of the image. Anyone viewing this can only focus on the girl, her expression which is contemplative, and her delicate, feminine neck and shoulders. The shadow on her eyes lends mystery or uncertainty. Then the questions arise in their minds. What is she looking at? What is she thinking? What does this young girl want as adulthood approaches?

This painting is worthy of Andrew Wyeth in its subtle style and the thoughts it promotes in the viewer.

Yes I agree. I also like that his style is identifiable as his work. It’s what most artists strive for and why we get a lot of crap. Trying to separate yourself from the crowd lends to a lot of crap. Looking at you Zombie Rothko. ( though admittedly his ultimate work was 100x better than what he started off with)

211 Hello Hordelish art fans.

I kinda took September off from commenting, after Kirk's death. Thought it might be time to dip my toe back into the warm, murky commenting waters.

I'm out of practice, though. I noticed in the past few weeks that whenever I thought to make a comment, if I just waited, someone else would make the same or similar comment. Including leaving Amelia Erhart's crashed plane on a planet to be explored by NASA! So I wonder at the value of my commenting, other than to just show up.

About the gal in the painting: At least this is a little more colorful than some of CBD's choices this month. Plenty of pink, fer surrely. She has a nice face. I wonder about the hat, though. Looks like it's about to be tangled in those branches. And what is that big black bit, a headband? Did she fix her hat with FlexTape?

Okay, starting to feel my commenting legs again. Gotta go back and read the Morning Report, though, before anything more.

279 >>> 252 BREAKING: In a major announcement, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announces the RETURN to MALE-ONLY STANDARDS

Is this why they had the emergency meeting with everyone? To update everyone before they made the announcement?

If a general can't meet the physical fitness requirements, I get it. Retire and move to the private sector. OR, use your retirement to open up a hotel in Vermont and have Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney come there and croon to you.

About 900 or so active duty then more when you consider reserves/national guard. We managed a military at its height in WWII with about 2000. So current active duty ratio is about 1:1400 when in WWII, it was about 1:6000. To return to that measure, we would reduce generals/admirals to something around 250 or so.

Navy is approaching one admiral per ship. AF, one general per base, and other ludicrous measures.

Saw "Punch Drunk Love" last night on Criterion (available elsewhere too)

A surprisingly charming oddball rom-com by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Adam Sandler as a very shy guy and Emily Watson as his love interest.

I'm not a big soundtrack guy but one of the strongest elements of this movie was the soundtrack by a guy named Jon Brion.

I'm going to have look up his other soundtracks cuz this one match the moods perfectly and enhanced the whole movie experience.

Do you remember the Robin Williams movie, "Popeye"? in the movie Olive Oil sings a nice little ditty called, "He Needs Me".

That simple melody is used throughout the movie in various forms until, finally it breaks through in the moment where the Adam Sandler character finally decides to go after the girl and win her.

Just very well done magical movie moment set up perfectly by the action and soundtrack before.

Highest recommendation.

Check it out.

313 (LifeSiteNews) — Bishop Michael Martin, OFM, has shared that the new chapel substituting for the previous four traditional Latin Masses of the Diocese of Charlotte is not meant to fit all of those who have attended the TLM.

Martin made the clarification in a Friday letter announcing the diocese’s official merger of its Latin Masses into one chapel, effective October 5. The newly renovated Little Flower Chapel, located 40 minutes north of downtown Charlotte, seats about 350 people, according to Martin.

“Understand that the chapel is not meant to be able to accommodate all who are currently attending the TLM in their respective parishes,” Martin wrote. He encouraged the Latin Mass-goers of the diocese to attend Little Flower Chapel occasionally, and even to wait until later in October or November to go to its Latin Mass, given its limited space.

Depends on criteria for retention. Basically Barry Goldwater as Chair of Defense and a guy named Nichols in the House, set up a stupid formula in the 80's in defense authorization and guidance legislation with all sorts of commands, etc. that are superfluous today. Cold War done.

Led to a very top heavy rank. AF has always been top heavy as they demand pilots have a commission and got rid of warrant officers in the 60's. Army with its chopper pilots and other needs kept warrant officers as pilot only path. Dunno about Marines, but I think Navy also has all its pilots as commissioned officers.

While the most glaring, the overstaffing of officers based on old Cold War meatgrinder casualties (excessive officers were built into the system for cadre purposes and casualties in positions like pilots), is pretty apparent.

Aerial drones, ship drones, missiles, etc. are making some of this overabundance of officers now unnecessary and too costly with too many top and middle managers trying to justify their positions while sucking down resources needed for actual warfighting.

One of the regulars at my regular bar in the early 90s was a tunnel rat. 5'4" at the most, was working as a shift lead at a local big box grocery store, back when you could make pretty good money there. One of the most cheerful guys I've ever met. I got the feeling that after a tour crawling through tunnels, blowing out his eardrums shooting Cong at arm's reach and cutting throats with a Ka-Bar in the pitch black, he felt lucky to be alive and was determined to wring every bit of joy out of life.
