The MA Teachers Association just told schools not to discipline educators who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination because it would “validate accusations by extremists.”

Uh, actually, it validates that cheering murder is sick and that these people shouldn’t be trusted to teach children.

Charlie Kirk was a racist misogynistic bigot who didn't give two shits about Free Speech, as is true of the entire MAGA movement that Kirk happily fought day and night to advance. RIP to a real asshole whose death is being used by other assholes to continue their entrenchment of a reactionary authoritarian regime. Charlie would be thrilled at how his death is being weaponized to crush dissent right now

21 A Question for our esteemed master of ceremonies or anyone else who has an answer:

I am looking for a physically upgradable laptop/tablet. Currently using a Lenovo, but they seem to get input problems after about a year-- backspace, enter, space bars don't work unless you press them all at the same time for 5s, touch pad randomly switches off and has to be manually switched back on in settings, and the keyboards start losing connectivity with whole columns, etc. End result is a useless amalgamated chineseium alloy brick. Went through all that about a year and a half ago, and thought it was a one off. Seems that's just the lifespan of Lenovo.

I want to buy a base model, and upgrade at least the SSD with my own. I do all my gaming on a desktop rig, so don't need anything crazy. Any strong opinions on the subject?

23 From what I have read, the network was not ready to let him go from public pressure. The pressure came from the affiliates.
Two of the bigger affiliates said they would not run Kimmel in that time slot. That would be a major loss of revenue on top of the money bleeding out of Kimmel's production. The network may have been looking for a reason to dump him and this was a reason that made sense.

24 Blue Bayou 4reminds me of the time I left grad school to pursue a woman I fell in love with (@23) who graduated and moved away to go to another school.

I was so poor, I fit everything I owned in a 72 Vega hatchback and was living in the woods outside of Chapel Hill, NC.

The song brought back memories of how good things were for me when I was with her and how desperate I was to get that back.

I still think about her every now and then. She was probably the only woman I loved who I felt was a soul mate.

25 I have long mused some sort of “strike” by decent peaceable Americans would be interesting. As always the numbers are there, though organization is key. And I’m not sure how it could be done, since pulling students en masse out of government run schools would be chaotic for working parents.

But it has reached a critical mass, something like this should have been done long ago. They maintain “we own your children”, the parent family taxpayers are on the hook for it, “in loco parentis” what’s that mean the teachers union asks, while they fail to teach, and yet find the time to groom them for sex deviancy and political activism.

They can’t throw everyone in jail, if everyone is united. Imagine the bulk of American families deleting the schools portion of their property tax bill. I know our county delineated where every dollar went in granular detail, at least. An industrial Enema is necessary to flush this system out.

36 I've long recognized that the teachers unions are a major factor in why we are where we are today. The public employee unions are equally as bad but don't have our kids to mess with.

I don't see a general strike as being sustainable but if another alternative union based on non-commie values could be developed and get a toe-hold, that would start to shake things up.

There used to be two unions as I recall, one was affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the other wasn't. I think the commie one took over.

Once your kids are out of school, the fire tends to die down, at least it did with me but, good grief, look at the taxes and wasted money.

You have the right to keep and bear arms. You don't have the right to be given a gun.

You have the right to free speech. You don't have the right to be given a microphone.

No one is preventing him from saying what he wants to say. He just can't say it on someone else's soapbox and get paid for it anymore.

You wanna speak? Start a blog. Write a letter to the editor. And until you're ready to say "Yes why *doesn't* Alex Jones have his own latenight show?", then shut the hell up.

The grand irony is that they're saying *this* farce is "chilling" and stifling free speech, but shooting a guy in the neck and murdering him *during a show* is just something that happens from time to time.

58 If you're going to do one great thing with your life being able to sing Blue Bayou like that would be a not bad choice.

The Congress Hotel in Tucson is quite a place. 100 years ago when it was brand new it was a heck of a place to be. Today if you stay there you probably should be doing an inventory of your life choices. The bar by day is where all the alcoholics who get by on social security hang out and by night it's where the newly minted University of Arizona 21-year-old pop-tarts get so drunk they end up questioning their life choices the next day. Every time I go to Tucson I make a point to go there, It really is one of my favorite places.

One employee had to spend about $150 for new pants and shoes.

66 In the ongoing Linux Mint on the tiny note-taking laptop project, is... font sizes. Both my wife and I have considerable experience at being 29, so we need things sized up on a small screen.

Maybe this will help someone else using Linux Mint with the Cinnamon Desktop on a small laptop screen:

Menu button
search for: Font Selection and select it.
Set Font scaling to 1.5

I suggest at this point also clicking the menu button, then clicking and dragging the right edge out to the right some so you can see the full names of things when the menu displays.

Right click desktop empty area, select customize
Icon size: Larger (or large, as you desire)

I like turning the icon auto-arrangement off, and then clicking on the desktop settings link on that dialog, and turning on the trash icon.

At the bottom where the running tasks and pinned applications are (the "panel"):

Right click the panel and select "panel settings"

(The following settings are suggestions, use what looks and feels right to you on the screen size you have.)

Right click the menu and select "configure". Set the Panel's icon size to 42. Set the following icon sizes for the menu: Categories should be set to 32, Applications to 32, and Favorites to 42.

Finally, the cursor. The modern cursor isn't appealing to me. To get something more traditional, click the menu button, search for Themes, and open that. Go to the advanced settings and be sure you're on the themes tab, then select the "DMZ White" mouse pointer.

Okay, that's what I've figured out so far. Still working on how to increase the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" button size in the upper right of application windows.

Not the kind of bless your heart you do when you're sincerely complimenting somebody. But the kind of bless your heart you use with somebody is so effing stupid you think to yourself even though breathing is involuntary, for them, that's still quite an achievement.

89 The whole point of inserting hardware into your face, or any other sartorial facet of what once was the "punk" ethos, is to fight the man and show you refuse to conform to society and work a 9 to 5 like some kind of sheep. It is a performative decision designed to make employment impossible, and show your commitment to the punk lifestyle.

I'm just hoping this helps someone here, and I'll try to confine these types of comments to the tech thread where they're topical.

No problems on either of them *knocks on wood*, other than usual Windows glitches.

Have you ever looked at Framework?
Their laptops are the most customizable laptops made, Also a lot easier to upgrade over time.

https://frame.work/

They are more expensive for that reason, but if you want a laptop that you can keep for years and get parts to replace or upgrade with, it’s the best choice out there.

119 @111/Thing From Snowy Mountain:

(one last quick reply before I dash out the door):

Go to your local computer shops. Ask if they sell refurbished machines from sources like companies that participate in refurbish programs (when they do their big hardware refreshes every 3, 5, or 7 years.)

That can be a cheap and good source of hardware that you're looking for, and that's exactly how I scored mine at about 1/3 of the price of new. (Hint: Don't buy when the students are back in school, buy in the summer when they're out, before the 'back to school' demand hits, because refurbished machine prices go UP at that time.)

If you go on Amazon and type in 12” laptop you’ll get back plenty of older models, running older or low-powered, low core count, chips for cheap.

But there are also some older, cheaper models with 13” displays, too.

Ther are plenty on there for under $500,

I thought it was Ron Howard's getting-fatter-by-the-year daughter, but either way, the fake pics they make of the Dodo, it looks to be about the size of a chicken.

But what if it's the size of T-rex? Do you want that silly looking thing to chase you into the toilet, then bite you in half?

Here is a review Windows Central did for this machine.
https://is.gd/oBwcGo

I looked those over when they were in the stores. It was a nice light duty machine. They cut corners in a couple places like the base plate is plastic instead of aluminum and they cut out the backlit keyboard. But the overall package got the job done. Microsoft does a very good job with updating their hardware with security, OS, and firmware updates. Being Amazon you can get it shipped to you and look it over and if you don't like it, send it back. I have come to really like their hardware.

I don't believe that's what happened. I think the Dodos saw the sailors doing naughty things to the mermen, and so they had to be eliminated.

167 Microsoft laptops are pretty much MacBook Airs running Windows given how they're built. Top notch materials, top notch manufacturing, and so on. The Laptop Gos come in at the bottom of the stack; still they used that same design ethos on it with the exception they had to cut some corners to hit a price point. Microsoft Surface PCS are never the cheapest, never the most the most performant, but they are some of the nicest machines you can own. I have been using Surface Pros (The tablet versions) for years. Around 2022. Microsoft really figured out how to make a nice PC and then that shows up in the Gos also.

Based on my experience, I would give Amazon refurb a spin so you can find out if it meets your needs. They really are lovely light duty machines. In a couple years I'm going to go with the latest version of the Surface Pro; that form factor and how it's been executed is my ideal PC.

Dell Inspirons were great machines for the money. I get where you're coming from with those. At some point the build quality of them came very close to the XPS line. They differentiated them by capping the CPUs and other features. But for daily drivers, oh yeah.

I’ve heard great things about Surface build quality over the years. I haven’t t tried one, but I always liked the styling of them.

The biggest drawbacks I see on this laptop are the meager I/O (1 USB A, 1 USB C) and the weird screen resolution of 1034p, which I guess is adequate for a 12.4” screen but they could’ve jumped to 1200p for a little better experience.

Also the 8GB of RAM is a little sparse these days, but for a browse, email, watch video, or Word/Excel machine it’s fit for purpose.

It's about d@mn time we use modifiers when referring to the lect!!!

I listened to The History of Rome podcast, but was never nearly as impressed as so many were about it. Duncan was always very glib, and very self-fart-sniffing.

In one of the filler episodes where he answered listener questions, his take on the American Revolution was bog-standard Marxist cribbed-from-Howard-Zinn stupidity. Then, at the latest, it was crystal-clear what kind of "historian" this pathetic cockholster was.

184 Pretty sure I have that problem on my ASUS ROG Strix laptop. Never noticed the glitches, so to speak, but it anytime it tries to go on battery alone, it freezes within a minute or so.

Also have periodic black screen freezes as well, that require a hard 5 second power button press reboot. Which triggers...

Also freezes during restart. If I use the Windows "shutdown" option, it shuts down and starts up fine. But if you select "restart" it enters the never ending freeze loop. Every other startup attempt will go into "Automatic Repair" where the cursor will freeze in 5-10 seconds. Only recovery is hard reboot. Freezes during windows startup, lather, rinse, repeat.

If I hold the power button for like 20-30 seconds, not only does the laptop shutdown, including the red led swipe of the keyboard they built in, but the white power LED will go off after 20-30 seconds. Sometimes, it will not come back on. Went through this last night. No luck existing the freeze loop - until the power led refused to come on. and then the power button does nothing. Its like the laptop is a literal brick. An hour or so later, a startup attempt on battery and the power button worked
