22 The real location is much more vibrant. Not exactly sure what the artist was trying to do with the bright faded out thing he's got going on. It looks like something that was hanging in an old gas station window for 30 years.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 19, 2025 09:37 AM (snZF9)

23 Something weird perspective-wise going on here. It all seems okay except for the man. When I first saw it, I thought he was a giant. But his size compared to the tree is okay. Think it must be how big he is compared to the bit of road he's standing on.

Just a marketing ploy. Nobody had a problem with Hampshire, but someone came up with the idea of "New" Hampshire, so they just went with it. Soon the outcry will be too big to ignore, and they will come out with Hampshire Classic. But it won't really be the same as Hampshire, now will it???

Posted by: Yyrog the Sorceror

New Hampshire has more trees now than it did in the 19th century. They cut a lot of them down for farms, which were later abandoned.

It's not unusual to find stone walls, formerly surrounding said farms, in the middle of a forest.

60 Richards was part of the Hudson River School and American Pre-Raphaelite movement. It shows in his wonderful land and seascapes. This is a gentle image. The greens and level ground offering comfort to the solitary walker against the rugged mountains in the misty distance. The colors are soft not jarring. The harder , bare rocks are softened by distance. If he wanted to create a serene image, he achieved it. It's easy to imagine the quiet. Peaceful and gorgeous.

Check out Richards other paintings. His use of natural light and appropriate colors to create a mood is masterful.

CBD, thanks. This is a wonderful image to end the week with: serene and calming.

76 Early Museum records identify this picture as “The Franconia Mountains from Campton, New Hampshire,” but Campton is miles from the site portrayed, the entrance to Franconia Notch. In the center is Mount Lafayette, flanked by Cannon Mountain and Eagle Cliff on the left and Mount Lincoln and Little Haystack on the right. The image reflects a tour of the White Mountains shared by Richards, the Reverend Elias L. Magoon (who donated this and 84 other watercolors to the Museum in 1880) and their wives in June 1872, and probably portrays the white-maned clergyman himself, absorbed in a book as he strolls the path in the foreground.

143 Yes, I'd hang this lovely watercolor.

The Met
Franconia Notch, New Hampshire
William Trost Richards (American)
1872
Not on view

"Early Museum records identify this picture as “The Franconia Mountains from Campton, New Hampshire,” but Campton is miles from the site portrayed, the entrance to Franconia Notch. In the center is Mount Lafayette, flanked by Cannon Mountain and Eagle Cliff on the left and Mount Lincoln and Little Haystack on the right. The image reflects a tour of the White Mountains shared by Richards, the Reverend Elias L. Magoon (who donated this and 84 other watercolors to the Museum in 1880) and their wives in June 1872, and probably portrays the white-maned clergyman himself, absorbed in a book as he strolls the path in the foreground."

Even more beautiful, imho, Lake Squam from Red Hill

Seriously, considering context it gave me chills. I'm pleasantly surprised it wasn't edited, apparently. I know we hate him, but interested in what Tapper says.

This is really a good show so far. Both Colbert and Tapper are risking trumpster anger. And calling out the rich cowardly media owners.

Brendan Carr at the FCC is one sick, sadistic, evil fuck. He must be stopped! Thank you Stephen!

I'm actually somewhat optimistic that this show wasn't pulled. They may come after Colbert tomorrow, but kudos to him. And, hate him or not, Tapper was good too.

Conservatives are never funny thier humor pushes people down it’s bitter and is just not funny. Never seen a conservative be truly funny.

188 I wawondering: What's with all the crazy 22 year olds? But look at their life-event timeline.
Born around 2003-04, and this happened in their first ten years- gay marriage (2004); twitter, Facebook, celebrity advocacy, the Iraq War (but they missed 9/11-different perspective), Obama elected, increased racism charges, the 2008 recession, abortion became all about women's 'health', Obamacare, the smartphone, Deepwater oil spill, climate hysteria grabs hold, Occupy Wall Street, Sandy Hook, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and the complete rise of the digital/social media/online life.
In 2016-2018, when they were in their early/mid teen years they saw non-stop attacks on Trump, conservatives, and the full effect of the weaponized government/CIA/DOJ and media accomplices; BLM, MeToo, a wild increase in LGBTQPRTS+, an ever-increasing life lived online, , continued lies about Trump's supposed racism. When they were graduating from high school, Covid, George Floyd and Biden was elected in a suspect election. Transgenderism took off with the lockdown and people got dangerous shots or lost their jobs, those who fought it were vilified and mocked. A generation lost?

Just watched Good Boy trailer. Yeah, you guessed it: it's about a dog. Wait, it gets worse.

It's a horror movie. Wait, there's more.

It's from the dog's POV. Like, as in, like, the camera views are mostly at doggo-level.

The trailer is LOADED with fake "reviews" from fake "critics," which is always a bad sign. Idiots are excited to see this garbage, too. Are you an idiot?

198 The number of videos I've seen of people saying "I left the church, but now after hearing Charlie Kirk after his death I'm reading my Bible again and might go to church Sunday" is beautiful. Especially women. Sometimes the face of true evil hiding under the faces of people you thought were on your side can do that.

Even before Charlie was shot I saw an increasing number of people saying they were an atheist because you couldn't prove God exists, but the left proved that Satan exists so they became a Christian. Even the people who are still atheists are describing the left as "demonic" now.

In part, CONGRESS has enacted special tax laws that apply to churches, religious organizations and ministers in recognition of their unique status in American society and of their rights guaranteed by the FIRST AMENDMENT of the Constitution of the United States. Churches and religious organizations are generally exempt from income tax and receive other favorable treatment under the tax law; however, certain income of a church or religious organization may be subject to tax, such as income from an unrelated business. The Internal Revenue Service offers this quick reference guide of federal tax law and procedures for churches and religious organizations to help them voluntarily comply with tax rules. (More)

I keep using this example:

If a clerk at a store in the 1820s went to a street corner and announced his support for pedophilia and his employer walked by, would his employer at that time have been obligated to keep the clerk on his payroll just because the speech was done off of the employer's property? He could choose to keep him. He could choose to release him, but no one serious would have been protesting the employer for letting the clerk go.

Firing the clerk would be cancel culture. And it would be a good thing.

I am currently finishing Eusebius. He was an early Church historian of the faith. If you think our times were troubled, the early era of Christianity was marked by such horrible persecutions that were met with such devout faith that you will be appalled afresh at how awful times can get. Any casual reading of accounts from various wars and internal unrest in Euro land in history also give lie to this time is the worst of times.

And that is not limited to Europe. Even today, in places like S. Africa where you are murdered for your skin color, or Nigeria where your faith is not what Muzzies think it should be, or in places like China where young men are 'laying flat' and giving up on life because it is so miserable.

There is nothing new under the sun including times of troubles.

281 Old cancel culture was: Don't endorse crimes and especially violence against individuals

Cancel culture 2008-2024: If you say anything that goes against the current leftist narrative you will be cancelled. Also maybe if you EVER said anything against the current narrative. Also, we'll prosecute if we can find any way to do so

Cancel culture now: Don't endorse crimes and especially violence against individuals

But the assholes that brought us the previous incarnation of cancel culture need a heaping dose of what they called for...

Eh, that's simplistic version of cancel culture.
The real cancel culture that started under Obama was a scorched earth effort. Prime example of how far it can go (apart from what they did to Trump, and Kirk's shooting) is the destruction of VDARE.

Optics is about current narrative capture. And if both sides are completely obsessed with it, the argument holds merit.

However, it's obvious that the new GOP doesn't care nearly as much as the old GOP did about winning the news cycle.

It's about winning actual battles. Getting Kimmel off the air is a win, no matter the optics. One more leftist jester denied his audience because he crossed us.

345 Well I'm late to the party as usual.

1) Yes that place actually exists, currently Interstate 93 reduces to 2 lanes and runs right about where the path is that the gent is standing on and then winds through that passage. Its beautiful, probably doubly so in the fall but don't bother trying it is a parking lot late September through October.
2) Yes the mountains are a pretty much spot on, prettier in real life if that's possible.
3) It can get pretty hazy in summer through early fall in New England on a hot day. We get humid, pretty nasty. Also that part of New Hampshire still has LOTS of evergreens that spew pollen and various gasses spring and early summer that exacerbate the situation. Doesn't help that Mr. Richards is of the pre impressionistic Hudson River school of painting.
4) Old Man of the Mountain would have been on the back of that nearest mountain so not visible from this perspective. Saw it once in my youth, was deeply unimpressed, Whoever thought it looked like a mans face had a far better imagination than I did at 8. Old Man of the Mountain is now only found on New Hampshire license plates and old (2000) state quarters as it was washed away in 2003.

349 It's about winning actual battles. Getting Kimmel off the air is a win, no matter the optics. One more leftist jester denied his audience because he crossed us.

That's what matters.

But, but, but, Muh Principles.......well Muh Optics in this case. FCC's Carr had little to do with it other than his own free speech and warning reminding folks of the law.

This was grassroots and the fact that Larry and Insty are so fearful of optics indicates they are behind the times.

350 NOOD.

351 Kimmel was fired by his employer for bad performance. Period. He was losing the network millions. His rating sucked. He was a terrible employee. The fact that part of his bad performance was saying something stupid and offensive doesn't change that. Employers have the right to fire bad employees. They always did.

Kimmel is also fuckwad toadsucking prick.

I've equated it to Billy Martin/George Steinbrenner... which is probably not very fair to Martin.

Billy acts like a jerk, Steinbrenner is telling him and the public he's doing a superb job, and George has complete confidence in Billy.

Then George reads the papers, and sees the Yankees record, and fires Martin for poor performance. Says he can't have a guy like Billy around, because he's too fiery and unprofessional.

Are you kidding, George? That's why you hired him! Now, Martin IS a shitty human being, does shitty things, but two days ago George was telling Billy to just keep doing what he's doing.

352 Don't look now but the Pope and the Catholic church have just changed a centuries old definition of "Thou Shall not kill" to accuse Israel of genocide.

353 The slightly more realistic argument I've seen is "everyone was about to unite in hating Israel, and then Kirk was shot and it's back to the left vs right sideshow again". And I don't rate that as convincing in the least.

And all of this was spurred by Israel going after and trying to destroy Ham Ass and other Iranian catspaws in the Middle East like the Houthis, He'sblownup, and other nasties.

Who has been Iran's and its catspaw terrorist group's best buddies--the Al Thani family in Qatar is who. And not coincidentally spending billions in the West for PR campaigns and buying influence.

One, the original Hebrew was Thou Shalt Not Murder. Long history in Hebrew law regarding self defense of self and nations there.

Ham Ass deserves to be destroyed for the soulless monsters they are and the horrible warping of people under their control into meat puppet haters and murderers. It is as if the Amorites and other primitive evil Canaanite tribes have come back to life to repeat their vile child sacrifices and murderous philosophies under the rubric of Islam.
