Cafe House, Cairo (Casting Bullets)
Jean-Léon Gérôme French 1884 or earlier While two mercenaries cast bullets and a third, seated behind them, seems to be inspecting one, others engage in revelry and a man and woman converse. Despite these apparent incongruities, the meticulous painting technique renders the scene convincing. Gérôme traveled to Egypt many times from 1855 onward. His recollections of these journeys, together with objects that he brought back to Paris, became ingredients for scenes which today might be regarded as historical fictions. The title of this work derives from the stock book of Gérôme’s dealer, who bought the painting from the artist in 1884, presumably soon after he finished it. I am beyond frustrated with the "principled right" at the moment.
Broadcast licensees sign agreements and are subject to regulation from the FCC to maintain their access to gov owned airwaves. That the FCC has failed to enforce those regulations for literally decades doesn't make the regulations less lawful. That an FCC commissioner decided, "Hey, broadcast licensees should be subject to the regulations that they've agreed to hold to in exchange for access to the airwaves," is not jawboning. Kimmel very easily was in violation of 47 C.F.R. § 73.1217. He is on record as refusing to correct his violation of this. ABC not doing anything about it risks their agreement with the gov on how to run the airwaves they license out from the gov. It's materially different from Biden telling Twitter to shut down accounts that challenged lockdown procedures. The narrative that it's all jawboning also completely sidesteps the affiliates independently announcing the pre-empting of Kimmel's show. Does it look bad for free speech? It does not, because broadcast networks don't actually have a blanket free speech protection while using govt owned airwaves. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, in a world of gods and monsters with James Whale at September 18, 2025 09:55 AM (GBKbO) 113
And now, a word from Jim Acosta.
Jim Acosta@Acosta Jimmy Kimmel deserves better than this. He’s a class act. Case in point - after my first appearance on his show back in 2018, he very thoughtfully asked whether I was receiving adequate security at that time, as Trump was repeatedly smearing journalists as “the enemy of the people,” comments that resulted in threats aimed at many of us in the White House Press Corps. I’ll never forget that moment of kindness from Jimmy. It spoke volumes. Make no mistake, our right to free speech is under attack in this country. This right must be defended as it is essential to the American way of life. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Who Has Had About Enough! at September 18, 2025 09:56 AM (L/fGl) 114

Interesting and different scene. Gerome paints with a realism and detail even in his historical subjects. This one is more focussed, more intimate but it still has his use of brilliant color especially in the clothing of the figures in the foreground. Their expressions are individual and appropriate which makes them stand out even more. To my mind, the use of ancient stonework being used for modern times seems very Egyptian. The otherwise basic items, like the wicker (?) crate used as a seat, points to a degraded culture.
I'll add that the bullet casting setup is accurate. People have been casting bullets, especially round ball, in the most basic manner for hundreds of years. A campfire will do the job. I've cast thousands of bullets over the years and I hope the mold and ladle have wooden or cloth handles because those things get damn hot. Also, anyone messing with molten lead without proper shoes is a fool asking for pain. Posted by: JTB at September 18, 2025 09:56 AM (yTvNw) 117

Jimmy Kimmel deserves better than this. The right simply gave up enforcing long held law against the left from top to bottom for decades, letting the left run wild and free breaking rules and regulations because "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring a case.
Trump is not overstepping bounds in the least. He's enforcing long held law. It's like actually deporting anyone not here legally. Previous GOP presidents just didn't do it, and suddenly it's an abuse of power when Trump does it? Fuck off. Back then, bullets were cast round balls for the most part. These projectiles had very low ballistic coefficients and sectional density and thus shed velocity quickly. A 50 caliber ball weighs about 180 grains, so movie scenes where the rifle drives the shooter back with recoil are exaggerated. Now a 50 caliber muzzleloader with conical bullets in the 300 grain range driven by 100+ grains of black powder or equivalent has some fairly substantial recoil.

Since it came up. Recoil from a black powder muzzleloader is typically less than with modern ammo. A standard velocity 30-06 kicks a lot more than a 50 caliber round ball load. The Great White Hunters of the 1800s going after dangerous African game like Cape Buffalo used 4 gauge or 2 gauge smoothbore where the powder charge was measured in ounces, not grains. I've seen them fired. They will knock you back a few steps. If you don't brace properly, they will put you on your ass, possibly with a shoulder injury.

Does it look bad for free speech? It does not, because broadcast networks don't actually have a blanket free speech protection while using govt owned airwaves. Posted by: Biff Pocoroba Doesn't matter. Kimmel disobeyed his own company's demand that he apologize and instead wanted to weasel word and say what he wants. ABC affiliates had the right to demand ABC apologize or they weren't going to air the show to the detriment of corporate ABC's bottom line. So Kimmel goes as much for insubordination for refusing to apologize than being cancelled. Carano was never offered that choice nor was she responsible for potential massive financial losses. Apples and oranges. Posted by: whig at September 18, 2025 10:50 AM (WDjG6) 298

NYPost:
Jimmy Kimmel’s comments on the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk weren’t just noxiously offensive and seemingly misleading — their timing was also incredibly bad: They threaten to derail Nexstar’s $6.2 billion takeover of rival broadcaster Tegna, telecom insiders tell On The Money. The already controversial deal — which would combine two of the nation’s largest owners of local TV stations — poses significant antitrust questions and needs a close review by the Federal Communications Commission and its conservative firebrand chairman, Brendan Carr. Kimmel’s comments made that approval even dicier. That’s why Nexstar publicly announced Thursday that its stations would no longer carry the show, telecom insiders tell On The Money. Ditto for ABC, which produces and distributes “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to broadcasters like Nexstar — and likewise has business before the FCC. Posted by: SMOD at September 18, 2025 10:52 AM (RHGPo) 302

280 I always thought anti-vaxxers were a bit nutty until COVID came along.
Now I consider myself an anti-vaxxer. Wild. Posted by: Iasonas ======= Ditto. And also very reluctant to take any Big Pharma potions that I can avoid. Covid vaxx experience taught me that the whole charade of FDA approvals, trials, etc. are contaminated by bad will from Big Pharma where results are manipulated to get the product to market. And they figure even if the product is flawed, paying off settlements is cheaper in the long run than doing proper testing. Posted by: whig at September 18, 2025 10:53 AM (WDjG6) 306

Posted by: ... ------ Corporations will always be fair weather friends because commercial motives moderate any ideological impulses if a market is competitive and not monopolistic. But, I think the immediate threat is academia/education and the ngo complex that needs to be defunded. That eliminates the sinecures that nasty stinking lefties use to indoctrinate the young, populate the riots, pressure groups, and fake elections. Plus, these are the shock troops to clamp down on any societal impulse to fix the damage that the left has left in American society. Reactionaires so to speak. Posted by: ... --- They never were. They are market beneficiaries, just as we benefit from the market. We just want them, all things being equal, to continue benefitting from the market, because beneficiaries make a market the general good that it is. The market, at times, needs to be protected from "over-benefitting" by trying to steer the market. And keep one thing straight, they only like markets when they are the ones benefitting from it.
