Lovely scene. The background is dark which focusses attention on the two figures. The young mother, no wrinkles and no gray hair (yet), and a look of delight in her child. The child is obviously healthy and cared for, comfortable and curious, looking around. In this case right at the viewer. The painting shows contentment and peacefulness. It is just pleasant.

Today's limerick offers an allusion to the all-too-frequent practice in modern Western culture of unwed young women aspiring to have a baby because of the promise of "unconditional love", a promise that goes unfulfilled the first time the child fails too meet the expectations of the emotionally needy mother who then desires another baby who will surely meet the need for "unconditional love"until it doesn't... and so the vicious cycle of the welfare mom persists.

It's so sweet but apparently "painted with an eye to the international market." 🤑
Young Mother Gazing at Her Child William Bouguereau French 1871 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 827 This doting mother in picturesque dress and her angelic offspring are two of many such figures that Bouguereau painted with an eye to the international market. The scene is highly similar in subject and composition to Breton Brother and Sister, also dated 1871 (hanging nearby), and both works were bought by New York collectors—a testament to the popularity that the artist’s scenes of "princesses dressed up as milkmaids" enjoyed in America. --- Interesting but would pass hanging. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at September 17, 2025 10:04 AM (NFX2v) 96

He'd win 5% of the black vote in SC while Walz would get the rest because he's Harris' VP.
What upper class midwit progressives in Manhattan want almost never becomes reality in a presidential primary. If it did, Warren would have walked away with the nominated at least 3 times already. As time goes on, black women become an increasingly large part of the Democrat primary electorate, and it's only gotten worse since 2020. Posted by: TheJamesMadison TJM, dunno if you know this but in the South, the Black Church network is the urban and to a lesser extent statewide political machine and Clyburn is the current one coordinating that network. They man the polls in urban areas, control who is election director, funnel personnel to GOTV and vote harvesting ops, and have a long historical tradition of 'bloc' voting. For a variety of historical reasons, black churches are the parallel political organization to the Dems and before the New Deal, for GOP believe or not in Southern states. The black diaspora made this network important in certain Midwest urban places too like Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee, less so in NYC and Chicago (more commie influences there). Essentially the black church community is less interested in Commie troon, etc. but play along with it despite grumbles because it is the Gimmedat faction. Aging out of voting cohorts--the Silents were more GOP favorable being socialized in the days of Ike more or less. The Boomers were socialized in the ages of JFK, LBJ, and the failed presidencies of Nixon/Ford but more importantly during the Civil Rights Era. Bipartisan reprogramming to racism, sexism, abortion rights, drugs, plus the blaming of the Vietnam War on Nixon instead of LBJ turned a big proportion of Baby Boomers left. It's a shame it will probably have to wait until SOTU but he is going to bend them over and split their difference eight ways to Sunday. In a manner our side has rarely had fought for us. And who knows what will be said and done between now and then. But grab your popcorn. They are gonna go through a meat grinder in slow motion on national TV.
Posted by: ... ========= I would get Congress to give Trump a national address before them regarding political violence. The only fly in the ointment is budgetary politics right now--my guess is a partial government shutdown coming soon. But re national speeches, Reagan, after the assassination, did one and it rolled the Dems up on the tax bill. It pins the Dems on the floor to cheer or sit sullenly while Trump would go on about common 90/10 solutions to rampant crime, mentally ill killing people, and assassinations. As a two time that we know about survivor of such, he has the ability to engage on this subject. Posted by: whig at September 17, 2025 11:02 AM (WDjG6) 331

We haven't seen the next Democrat Preezy Candidate yet. He'll be a new Bill Clinton. Relatively unknown, probably white, and young enough to be full of New!!!!!1111!!!!!! 3rd way Ideas. Maybe he'll even play a musical instrument like the piccolo or something. I expect to see him start his run after the midterms. Posted by: naturalfake at September 17, 2025 11:02 AM (iJfKG) 333
For the most part, senators make really crappy national politicians and that is because they bloviate and have a voting record to be scrutinized. Much harder to scrutinize a gubernatorial candidate's record plus the glow from running a state well redounds to their credit.
Other than Trump, GOP and Dems do better picking governors (and they generally do better in office) than senators. Posted by: whig at September 17, 2025 10:58 AM (WDjG6) I wholeheartedly agree. The Dem's problem is they don't have any governors on the bench that aren't damaged goods. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at September 17, 2025 11:02 AM (3jSqd) 334

According to Grok, Whitmer's proposal was even worse than you state: No, Governor Gretchen Whitmer did not propose raising Michigan's gas tax to a total of 74 cents per gallon. In her 2019 budget proposal, she advocated for a 45-cent increase to the state's excise tax on gasoline (from the then-current 26.3 cents per gallon), bringing the excise tax alone to 71.3 cents per gallon. This would have made Michigan's excise tax the highest in the nation at the time, but the total combined state tax (including the 6% sales tax on fuel, equivalent to roughly 18 cents per gallon at average prices) was projected to reach about 89 cents per gallon — not 74 cents. The proposal, which aimed to generate $2.5 billion annually for road repairs, was ultimately rejected by the Republican-controlled Legislature and did not pass. More recent plans, such as her 2025 "MI Road Ahead" initiative, have focused on reallocating existing sales tax revenue on fuel to roads without a direct tax hike, rather than proposing any specific increase to 74 cents. For reference:
The current motor fuel excise tax rate in Michigan as of September 17, 2025, is 30.0 cents per gallon for both gasoline and diesel. This rate took effect on January 1, 2024, and will remain in place until the end of the year, when it is scheduled to increase to 30.93 cents per gallon on January 1, 2025, based on an inflation adjustment of 3.1% from the 2024 rate. Additionally, Michigan applies a 6% sales tax on gasoline, which equates to about 18 cents per gallon at an average price of $3.00 per gallon, bringing the total state tax to approximately 48 cents per gallon. The excise tax funds road and bridge improvements, while sales tax revenue goes to the general fund. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at September 17, 2025 11:06 AM (P5BPp) 342
As a late Boomer (hated and despise the early Boomer hippies) I got to cast my first vote at age 19 for Ronald Reagan in 1980.
Posted by: ShainS ===== As a very late Boomer technically, I think probably the 1960-1964 Boomers more resemble Gen X. By the political coming of age for this group, Vietnam and draft was not a live issue, the ERA was taking on water and failing, the Carter years were a friggin disaster in the world and US, the glow was off the endless Civil Rights campaigns because affirmative action was beginning to bite on the whites and young males, and economic opportunity/world politics was seen as far better with the GOP, Americans held hostage and the fecklessness of Carter made a powerful impression that the Dems were weak and clueless on foreign policy for late bloomers and early Gen X. Ironically, I would bet that ABC News thought that Koppel might pave the way for Ted Kennedy in 80 like LBJ was going to get sidelined by RFK in 68. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy ======== That is because the female Democratic governors are playing to their AWFL and alphabet networks, not the populace. And AWFLs and alphabet people are to the left of the Democrat coalition and far left to the population. Even Gavin does better than they do in at least rhetorically recognizing some sane policies.
