The time has arrived for the Tuesday ONT. Open thread, as always. Whatever is on your mind tonight, please share it in the gray boxes. But at least pretend to check out the content first, OK?

His Name is My Name, Too!

Bankruptcy Lawyer Mark Zuckerberg Sues Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg

An Indiana bankruptcy lawyer named Mark Zuckerberg has filed a lawsuit against the Meta CEO whose name he shares for repeatedly banning him on his social platforms.

It’s not easy being Mark Zuckerberg. No, not the Facebook founder, but an Indiana bankruptcy lawyer whose life has been negatively affected by sharing the younger tech maven’s name. Not only does he get over 100 emails every day from people who think that they are writing to the Meta chief executive officer, but he can rarely make a reservation at a restaurant without getting hung up on because people mistake him for a prankster. But the thing that irritates him the most is getting banned on Facebook and Instagram despite investing tens of thousands of dollars in ads for the simple reason that his name is Mark Zuckerberg.

“My life sometimes feels like the Michael Jordan ESPN commercial, where a regular person’s name causes constant mixups,” Mark Zuckerberg complained.

Not An "I" Tooth - An "Eye" Tooth!

Tooth Is Implanted in 34-year-old’s Eye to Restore His Vision After Two Decades

doof-eye-tooth.jpg

There’s an old Babylonian/Biblical legal maxim that goes, “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

For Canadian Brent Chapman, his new maxim is “a tooth for an eye,” because he has become the first in his country ever to receive an osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis.

If your Latin is on point, you’ll realize that translates to a tooth-in-eye prosthetic—literally Chapman’s tooth has been surgically implanted into his eye to act as a lens fixture which has enabled him to see again.

This Phillies Fan is NOT Asshoe

Boy Gives Up His Only Foul Ball So A Grandmother Can Finally Have Her First

doof-birthday-baseball-game.jpg

For her 80th birthday, Donna Morey got a gift she’ll never forget—thanks to the kindness of a 9-year-old boy she had never met.

On September 10th, Morey was celebrating at a Phillies vs. Mets game with her family. Sitting near the third baseline, she had one wish: to finally bring home a foul ball after years of attending games.

That chance came in the fifth inning when young Phillies fan Jameson Pennings caught his very first game ball. He proudly tossed it back and forth with his dad, inspecting the scuffs like a prized treasure. But before the night ended, Jameson decided someone else needed it more.

Morey recalled how it happened: “I was really absolutely amazed because he overheard my daughter talk to the ball girl about next foul would she consider giving it to me for my birthday. All of a sudden, this boy says to his dad, ‘I want to give that lady my ball,’ and his father says, ‘Are you sure about this,’ and the little boy looked at the ball in his glove and says yeah. They got up from their seat, came right over to me and handed me the ball.”

Good job, kiddo!

The Karen beyotch in Philly is disgusting. If she is a true baseball fan, she would know and abide by the bleacher bum unwritten, but always observed, rule: The ball belongs fair-and-square to the person who comes out of the scrum with it.

Self-entitled people are the worst you encounter. It doesn't matter if she's had a season ticket forever but never got a foul ball or homer ball before. I've been to a a lot of baseball games and a ball never came within 50 feet of me. No big deal to me never seeing one I might be able to snag.

49 An old book called the “Hacker’s Dictionary” mentioned something about an old mainframe somebody was working on.

The tech noticed a single pole switch inside the cabinet with a single wire connected to it. It was labeled “magic” and “more magic”. It was in the “more magic” position.

Since a single wire going to a switch can’t possibly do anything, he promptly snipped it out with his wire cutters. The computer promptly crashed. (He never did figure out what it was, but said he left the switch in the “more magic” position).

They'd get a commission to paint some rich worthy, and knowing how customers always want to stick their oar in, they'll deliberately paint one ear just a bit too big. Predictably, the sitter will come and peer critically at the painting and say, "You know, this is really fine -- but that ear, it's a bit too big."

"What a fine eye you have!" (Sitter swells with satisfaction)... "I'll repaint that right away!"

108 Since I am shutting down for the night. Re magic switch.

My father had reason to employ a former union plant electrician (Chrysler) that no longer had a plant to work at.

He and a buddy wired up a big red button switch with the word ON--no off button. His buddy did plumbing and rigged up a shower surprise for the person dumb enough to push the button. They added a sign that said in really big letters--Do NOT Push the Button.

Then these two dudes had their own private Candid Camera show as executive suits, workers, visitors, demonstrated monkey curiousity about the button and inevitably some would look around carefully and then push the button and get thoroughly hosed down. Repeat as needed. Probably tells you something about the bad years in Chrysler for the type of people being hired in the bad old years at Chrysler aka the 1970's.

112 A semi-related hack, or at least came to mind, back in the day cars were really easy to steal. A length of wire and a screwdriver. No hood locks, no steering locks. Just hot wire the ignition coil and short across the starter relay and Vroom! you’re in business.

Anyway, people would rig up some clever hacks to try and prevent it. One old guy on one of the auto forums said he replaced the ignition coil wire with a length of black rubber hose. Looked perfect. Went on vacation for a couple weeks. Forgot all about his DIY anti-theft device.

Goes to start his truck, and it cranks right up! Turns out black rubber is made with carbon - and is electrically conductive. So much for that idea.

A weird glitch or intermittent in my Nissan I once owned, every now and then, not very often, it would refuse to start unless the shift lever was pushed forward, just once.

I came out to my car one morning, and someone had tried to steal it overnight, the steering column was half disassembled and the rest of it. They couldn’t get it to start!

Yep -they didn’t tap the shift lever forward just once, one in a million.

The truck is still oncoming and hits a bump in the road. The lady thinks he flicked his high beam at her and she starts ranting again. The truck just passes on by like nothing was going on. I just kept walking and she starts asking me did you see that? And I just told her he probably just has halogen bulbs and that he hit a bump in the road. No idea if she heard me. Yep, the Erf got a smiting about 12,800 years ago. The last glacial maximum peaked a few thousands years before, but that big ice sheet was still covering most of Canada then.

Many species of megafauna roamed what is now the US then. Wolly mammoths, wolly rhinos, elephants, saber-tooth cats, even giant beavers and giant sloths. Yep, beavers the size of bears. Native horses as well. A human culture of sorts, dubbed the Clovis culture was here as well. Then, boom, it was all wiped out. Mass extinctions of 60% of the megafauna species.

The climate was slowly warming, with ice sheets slowly retreating. Something big happened in a geological instant. Massive fires (the black mat layer). The warming trend was interrupted for about 1000 years. Global temp dropped as much 18F. And then, boom, the ice sheets were largely going, sea levels rose, and here we are in the modern epoch, dubbed the Holocene.

One night the station owner called me complaining about the "modulation" and wanted me to boost the transmitter's power. This of course is simply not done, and the chief engineer had previously gone around the bend with this guy, trying to explain FCC rules governing signal coverage.

I told him to give me a few minutes to see what I can do, then went back to watching Monday Night Football. About ten minutes later, he called me back telling me the station is coming in "like a bomb, now". I told him that I took it as far as I could, and wasn't sure if it was enough to be noticed. "No, it's perfect now kid! You're great!" I was his favorite from that night on. Told the chief engineer and I think he's laughing to this day...

Saw a hyena in Ethiopia. It peaked in the car I was sitting in. Its head was the size of the car window.

Fairly sure these were ANSi stds. If you ever had to replace a relay in a car there is usually a two digit number on them. That is the function number

Turns out there is good evidence (still a lot of speculation, but it's pretty plausible) that Comet Encke and the Taurid meteor stream are the remnants of this YD comet. The Tunguska event itself was probably a big piece from the Taurid stream.

Anyway, the big picture goes like this. There was a big comet, about ~100 km/60 mi diameter was whipping around Sol ever so often. One fateful perihelion, it got too close to the Sun, or perhaps something else, and broke up into a bunch of pieces. On a fateful day some 12,800 years ago, the Erf slammed right into that debris trail.

We took a shotgun blast of many large pieces of low density dirty snowball/snowy dirtball impactors. The result was a bunch of Tsar Bomba airbursts all over North America. We got nuked from orbit so to speak.

On guitars with 2 pickups the selector switch has 3 positions. one for the bridge pickup, usually labeled treble, one for the neck pickup, labeled rhythm, and the middle position which turns both pickups on. Totally ass backwards in metal land, because all rhythms are done with the bridge pickup along with most leads. Shred leads use the neck pickup, and the middle position is pretty much never used. As a result, we call the positions Blowtorch, Shred, and Neutral. Such assholes we are, lol.

Back in the '80's, when Toyotas were being stolen all over the place, a friend of mine rigged his family's Toyotas with a switch behind the ashtray. Pull out the ashtray just a tad, and the crank circuit would be interrupted. So when he parked, he'd pull the ashtray out may half an inch. Thieves often look in the ashtray to see if a spare key is stashed there, so they'd pull it out all the way, find nothing, and proceed to defeat the ignition lock. And then the car would not start.

189 Transmission swap job is proceeding apace. Got the proper ram's horn manifolds installed on the engine, and they look fine there. Got the shifter out of the car, and the 700R4 tranny set up on a work table. Looks like the shifter will be a non-problem; take a rubber bumper out of it, and it has enough range to move the manual valve in the tranny its full range. All I have to do, really, is make a new plastic window with the PRNDL on it. And add a cam to the lever on the transmission to work micro-switches for neutral safety and backup lamps. Easy to do on the bench!

Drove the PNDLR this evening, a '64 Studebaker Daytona convertible. Ran just fine, too.

Well, there might be suitable indicator windows in some Avanti II's from the '80's but they won't be found in junkyards. It will be a pretty easy piece to make. Cut a strip of clear plastic. Frost it. Install in bezel. Hook shifter up to transmission. Hook up the lamp that move with the lever. With the lever in "park" stick a cutout "P" to the plastic. Ditto for the other positions. Spray the plastic with black paint. Peel off the stickers. Done.

Every time I saw the nick, I first laughed because I thought it meant he drove a Chevy Citation X-11. Then I wept when I realized the joke was on me, and he actually flies a Cessna Citation bizjet for a living, which is kind of my dream job.

My favorite Brit cop moment is a video I saw a couple years ago of some weedy drugged out of his mind British guy being arrested by a couple of portly Bobettes. At first he had no idea what they are doing, because he's stoned, and they still couldn't get him handcuffed.

Then he realized what's going on and he first pushed one, then the other cop away. He started, very, very slowly jogging away but both Bobettes were already huffing and puffing and started slow walking after him as he got away into the distance.

I don't know what that guy did, but TBH I think he earned escaping the short, tubby arm of the law in this case.

Woot! A T-bucket! Very cool; a go-kart for grown-ups. Never owned one, but they are a fun toy, to be sure.

The TH350 I just took out of the Avanti shifted and ran fine; it just has a huge converter drain-back problem. Normally caused by bad front seal and/or worn front pump bushing, that allows air to enter the torques converter, and fluid to drain from it into the transmission pan, making it overflow onto the floor. I have the parts to fix it, then that transmission goes into a 1983 El Camino that has a truly busted TH350 in it.

One of the explanations for the megafauna extinction was human overhunting, which is just ridiculous. The Clovis people killed off *all* of those species? And then just disappeared themselves somewhere?

When I was taking a Japanese history course, I learned about the Japanese version of the flood. A quick search:

"Izanagi and Izanami are often regarded as the parents of the Japanese islands and many deities. Their significance extends beyond mere creation; their actions set in motion the events that led to the Great Flood."

When I heard about it, I thought, 'Hmm, that's interesting.' Then I've read about other cultures and their Great Flood stories. Plus Atlantis.

Too many Great Flood stories from around the globe to be a mere coincidence.

The whole purpose is to terrify people into conforming. One has to make examples out of some people in order to pull that off.

It's not even about what the nominal purpose is. It's just an excuse to make people OBEY. They like bullying people. Hurting them. Destroying their lives. Killing them, if they can get away with it.

309 In my late teens, I worked in a factory. The forklift driver's name was James Bond. Every time he got called on the intercom people would snicker. He was pretty touchy about it.

He was pushing retirement age, so there's a pretty good chance he had the name before the character was even invented.

(just checked... the first Bond novel was published in '53, so yeah, he definitely had the name first).

I'm not so sure about that. The survivors might be able to use their technology to enhance the liveability of those regions not totally devastated. In the immediate aftermath? Use airplanes and sat reconnaissance to locate parts of the planet still able to support agriculture. Move there en masse, and take over.

320 I actually met George Takei, back around 2002, on the F train platform at 14th St. I was going home and I saw him looking confused (I knew he was). I asked him if I could help him. He said he was going to Columbus Circle, which the F did not go. So I told him, get on the next train, and at 47-50th, change to the D as in dog train.

So a train came in, we got on and sat near each other and talked. Nice guy. Funny. People around us were pointing and whispering.

I never talked about Star Trek or anything like that, just a normal conversation. Then we got to 50th, and I said to get off here and wait for that D and he said 'as in dog train'. As he got up to get off the train, he turned to me and said, 'Keep on Trekkin'! Those remaining in the car were now wondering who I was, was I famous?

Then George went off his meds.

You get heap big EMP from these huge airbursts too. Big time, turns out, and I wasn't even thinking about that. That would fry satellites, most likely. Ground electronics and power systems would be devastated.

And then, continent wide wildfires. And flooding, due to possible tsunamis. If you got big airbursts over the remaining ice sheets, like Greenland, you'd get meltwater pulses and ice calving and all that.

If it were global, no continent was spared, you'd have modern infrastructure collapse. Now, if there were pockets of stuff that remained intact, you'd might have remnant "hubs" that might be able to keep some tech going.

World ends. Now he has the only organized military force in the state. How do you hold on to civilization until humanity can climb back up to 1850 tech?

That reminds of me of a fascinating theory. You know some of that crazy ancient cave art? Weird drawings, like whoever drew that was on an acid trip? There is a theory that they were just recording what they actually saw. In the sky.

A super Carrington event, orders of magnitude greater, would produce all sorts of plasma patterns in the sky, and there was some guy I saw showing how some of the cave drawings look very similar to some of the discharges you'd expect to see.

You could get similar stuff with the EMP from huge airbursts. It would be short-lived, but you'd get some significant brief "aurora" like stuff going on.

Don't use a tarp. Go get some CLEAR plastic. HDepot sells the landscape-grade Visqueen or similar. Works like a greenhouse that you don't vent--cooks the grass and weeds, roots & all. Weight it down good and let the Sun do the work. Then rototill, level, smooth the soil. Replant.

Does Cali allow clover? Might be classified as a weed there?
