Houston's Light Rail down Main St was like this. The brain trust in charge felt traffic light interlocks and light signals warning of approaching trains were unnecessary. Hilarity ensued during its first years of operations.
Eventually, signal light retrofits were made.

D.C. Moore Gallery has an excellent biography of Reginald Marsh posted on its website.
Last paragraph, "By the late 1940s, Reginald Marsh’s New York was fading away. Mayor La Guardia was forcing the burlesque halls out of the city and the El was being dismantled. Even though the city was rapidly changing, Marsh continued to paint New York until his premature death in 1954. The paintings and other works on exhibition here offer a timeless glimpse into a world that has vanished forever."

Bit of NYC history. 10th Avenue got that sad name because a railroad line ran straight up the avenue to all the warehouses on the waterfront, delivering cars from the Hudson River car ferry landings. So many people were killed and maimed by the trains that eventually the entire line was elevated.
Today, it is now a park - "The High Line."

We had several friends from her past here to hug her and wish her well. It was an emotional time and she was grateful for it, but doesn't really understand what's happening and what her daughter has done.
We told her that some of her family possessions will remain with us, but some are her kid's responsibilities and there's strong chance they will be trashed by the new owners of her house.

Not entirely. *Where* the computer is matters a lot. High-frequency trading depends on low latency, so the closer the better. If you can colocate your equipment in the same building as the exchange, even better.
I don't know about the Wall Street firms, but this is a big deal in some other markets. Some commodities exchanges, at least, require a level playing field up to some amount of physical distance. If you're closer than that, you have to have that much cable to go through regardless. There are cable vaults with coils of optical cable that are there just to add distance to closer endpoints. Everyone must go through at least X miles of cable, so if you're at (X - Y miles), you will coil up Y miles of extra cable to get through so there's a level playing field.

Nope, death cases are very different because you are asked straight up if you can and will apply the death penalty during jury questioning--if you can't, you are excluded from being on the trial jury period. Called death qualified juries and upheld in Witherspoon v. IL from Scotus.
Try to pull that non deliberative shit in the jury room from lying in voir dire means the judge can dismiss you and seat an alternate which makes the rest of the jury pissed about having to start deliberations again.
My guess is the guy will cop a plea for Life Without Parole. He may still be charged under Federal laws as well like the MN George Floyd police officer making it impossible for a future Dem president or UT governor to pardon the asshole.

Finance is a very big business. It all ends in trading eventually, but traders are their own breed. And yeah, that's where the expertise is. Why are so many tech companies in Silicon Valley? There's nothing inherently special about the Valley except nice weather, and a lot of downsides.
Same reason. These places become their own engines thanks in large part to network effects. That's where the people are, and so that's where the people go. This *can* be broken - and it is always inevitably broken (just ask the great tech hub that was Boston) eventually - but it has its own ongoing appeal.

Jury selection is different in a death penalty case. You have to qualify for even being in the pool by stating you have no issue with, should the defendant be found guilty, sentencing with death.
Now, they can lie, sure, but it's a bit harder to be involved.

Ai summaries are like news stories--if one fact is wrong, then any consumer is likely to figure out that others might be doubtful as well. Hiding shit in search results is actually more effective because lies of omission are harder to find out than direct lies. AI tells direct lies like media stories do.
