Vinny Gambini: Does that freight train come through here at 5:00 A.M. every morning? Hotel Clerk: No, sir, it's very unusual. Vinny Gambini: [the next day, after Vinny was again awakened by the train] Yesterday you told me that freight train hardly ever comes through here at 5:00 A.M. in the morning. Hotel Clerk: I know. In 1846, the City of New York made what turned about to be a poor decision to authorize the construction of railroad tracks without barriers down the middle of 10th and 11th Avenues.
For nearly a century, giant steam locomotives operated by the New York Central Railroad pulled freight cars, sometimes several blocks long, through Manhattan’s congested streets, shipping commodities such as coal, dairy products and beef. Reginald Marsh, Death Avenue, 1927
"Reginald Marsh was born in Paris in 1898 to American parents who were both artists." D.C. Moore Gallery has an excellent biography of Reginald Marsh posted on its website. Last paragraph, "By the late 1940s, Reginald Marsh’s New York was fading away. Mayor La Guardia was forcing the burlesque halls out of the city and the El was being dismantled. Even though the city was rapidly changing, Marsh continued to paint New York until his premature death in 1954. The paintings and other works on exhibition here offer a timeless glimpse into a world that has vanished forever." I'd hang this particular painting. Thanks. Bit of NYC history. 10th Avenue got that sad name because a railroad line ran straight up the avenue to all the warehouses on the waterfront, delivering cars from the Hudson River car ferry landings. So many people were killed and maimed by the trains that eventually the entire line was elevated. Today, it is now a park - "The High Line." Posted by: J.J. Even when the tracks are elevated there is death. "Suicide Curve" was in Morningside Park at 110th Street. The El was about 80 feet off the ground and the train slowed down to a crawl for the sharp curve. Distraught people would exit the train when it slowed to leap from the tracks. Good reason to avoid NYC.

NFL ownership and management are some of the worst human beings in the country. This has been the case for decades. There is so much money in it, it is moths to the flame. there's weird authoritarian leanings in crazed football fans. The whole CTE thing also makes me think it's a stupid sport. Can you imagine how those tributes affected the black NFL players? Charlie Kirk never made any meaningful attempts to disguise his overt racism---any more than he tried to conceal his hatred of gays or women's rights or government workers. Absolutely disgusting displays by pro football powers-that-be. Shameful. It's right up there with the then Washington Redskins forcing their black players in the early 60's to sing Dixieland. So he hated government workers, too? I didn’t know that until now. But that’s OK since I hated his grifting, sexist, homophobic and racist self also. Our favorite “economist” Paul Krugman was apoplectic. “Why are so many Americans still telling pollsters that the economy is in bad shape” when “it’s hard to overstate just how good recent economic numbers have been.” Last week, the government issued two reports that explain why. Domestic, political, government-funded propaganda must end now By July 2, 2013, it was official: U.S. citizens could now be subjected to the same government-crafted propaganda once reserved for foreigners. Seven months ago, investigative watchdog Mike Benz revealed to Joe Rogan in an interview what really happened with the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012. Dowd expanded on the mess: “Trump has to deal with a turd of a disaster.” The scale of the deception in those job figures alone demands scrutiny. As Dowd put it, “You could say this is statistical fraud or bureaucratic incompetence. Let’s say it’s both. It such an egregious 7 standard deviation. 3.4 standard deviation is the chance of lightning hitting you at least once in your lifetime. It’s not likely. 7 deviation is suggestive of fraud–full stop.”

We had several friends from her past here to hug her and wish her well. It was an emotional time and she was grateful for it, but doesn't really understand what's happening and what her daughter has done. We told her that some of her family possessions will remain with us, but some are her kid's responsibilities and there's strong chance they will be trashed by the new owners of her house. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at September 15, 2025 10:46 AM (qpyNK) ++++ Not entirely. *Where* the computer is matters a lot. High-frequency trading depends on low latency, so the closer the better. If you can colocate your equipment in the same building as the exchange, even better. I don't know about the Wall Street firms, but this is a big deal in some other markets. Some commodities exchanges, at least, require a level playing field up to some amount of physical distance. If you're closer than that, you have to have that much cable to go through regardless. There are cable vaults with coils of optical cable that are there just to add distance to closer endpoints. Everyone must go through at least X miles of cable, so if you're at (X - Y miles), you will coil up Y miles of extra cable to get through so there's a level playing field. Called death qualified juries and upheld in Witherspoon v. IL from Scotus. Try to pull that non deliberative shit in the jury room from lying in voir dire means the judge can dismiss you and seat an alternate which makes the rest of the jury pissed about having to start deliberations again. My guess is the guy will cop a plea for Life Without Parole. It all ends in trading eventually, but traders are their own breed. And yeah, that's where the expertise is. Why are so many tech companies in Silicon Valley? There's nothing inherently special about the Valley except nice weather, and a lot of downsides. Same reason. These places become their own engines thanks in large part to network effects. That's where the people are, and so that's where the people go. 6Tried in Utah ? I'll say no - smartest defense move will be to stress that conviction = death. That alone gets one hold-out.
Posted by: It Is What It Is at September 15, 2025 10:47 AM (SLL5s) Jury selection is different in a death penalty case. NYC is to finance what SF is to tech. Lots of tech hubs have developed over the years in Austin for example. Every major company has a presence there.
But the heart of tech is still in the Bay Area. It’s where all the VC money is and where startup culture exists. I can’t see that going away anytime soon. With finance yeah you can have operations in Dallas or Atlanta. And they all do. The heart of finance is in NYC and will probably be for a long time. Posted by: Crusader AI is becoming widely know for telling fibs and lies just like government or media is. Easier though to actually show hallucinations and correct info for AI lies than search engine results burying and disappearing the right. Ai summaries are like news stories--if one fact is wrong, then any consumer is likely to figure out that others might be doubtful as well. Hiding shit in search results is actually more effective because lies of omission are harder to find out than direct lies. AI tells direct lies like media stories do.
