Top Story

Intel has announced two new desktop CPUs. Do not buy them. (Tom's Hardware)

The first is the i5 120, a six core part that has the exact same specs as the Core i5 12400 from 2022, mostly because that's what it is. Admittedly not an awful part, particularly if you didn't run a workload that would make good use of the "efficiency" cores, because it didn't have any of those.

The second is the i5 110, a six core part that has the exact same specs as the Core i5 10400 from 2020, mostly because... Yeah. The 10th generation chips didn't even have "efficiency" cores yet, so you're safe there. But you will need to find a five year old motherboard and DDR4 RAM for it, because none of this modern stuff will work.

Oh, and it's 14nm.
Arm has introduced four new CPUs. (Notebook Check)

The C1 Ultra replaces the X925 (which replaced the X4) as Arm's new flagship mobile core.

The C1 Premium replaces the A725 (latest in the same line as the A78, for example) as a sub-flagship core.

The C1 Pro also replaces the A725 which is a bit confusing, but is optimised for smaller size and lower power.

And the C1 Nano replaces the A520 (latest in the same line as the good old A53) as a core that also exists and powers your budget tablet probably.

Speaking of budget tablets, I have my Lenovo Idea Tab and Lenovo Legion Tab charging right now ready for testing tomorrow. (Notebook Check)

And a couple of older models I dug out to see how things have improved over the years.

Couple of things immediately evident:

First, the more expensive Legion Tab boots much faster, which it should do since it has a much faster CPU (Arm X3 vs. A76 cores).

Second, while the Legion Tab has a glossy screen, the Idea Tab is matte. Very matte. Lenovo's marketing material describes it as "paper-like" and at first glance that is correct.
UTF-8 is a brilliant design. (I Am Vishnu)

A brilliant implementation of a terrible idea.

UTF-8 is the default implementation of Unicode, and Unicode is an attempt to create a single alphabet that can encode every human symbol ever, from all languages including ones we can't read and ones that have syllabaries or pictograms rather than alphabets, and also everything else.

But it's just an alphabet. There is no embedded context as to what language you are using if the same symbol appears in more than one. Which happens all the time.

Which makes it impossible to write anything that can be read unambiguously.

Intel fell over and couldn't get up with that generation. It seems Intel's 14nm CPUS had the power to drive Apple to making their own CPUs and Microsoft to seriously start hooking up with Qualcomm. Truth is, having Intel become irrelevant is not a win; worse is they did this to themselves.

Matte screens mostly eliminate reflections but at the expense of less contrast. Glossy screens mock you and then steal your burrito. Other than that both are pretty solid choices for watching cat videos.

The current iPad Mini is 8.3” with a 2266x1488 resolution at 326 ppi.

So yeah, not going with 1200p or even 1080p is inexcusable. Especially since these will mostly be used to read, watch video, and play simple games on.

Samsung acts like they don’t already make displays and adding some more ppi to the screen will bankrupt them. It would probably be a few more dollars a device for the higher screen rez.

46 iPads are glossy, but Apple has some secret sauce in there to reduce glare while still providing some excellent contrast ratio.
For the non-Pro models anyhow.

The Pro models use OLED where contrast is not a problem.

FenSpouse had a nice talk with a woman who's about 80 about the Beatles. And the other woman who's about 90 read us a poem. She had written It's about how much she's likes living there. There are always activities going on and the staff is very nice .

Minecraft servers (at least with Java, I haven't tried it with Bedrock), like fast CPUs but don't care about the core count. So basically the cheapest one with a real CPU and not whatever they call Atom these days.

Apparently the Bedrock server still works with Linux so you can have fun setting that side of things up.

If I were you, I’d pick a few models you like and then do a lot of research on the companies that make them before committing.

Most of the mini-PCs are made in Hong Kong, and some companies have good reputations others don’t, mostly to do with after-sale support, like updating BIOS which some of them rarely, if ever, do. And getting customer service if something breaks is also a PITA.

There are a few corps that have some sort of American presence which makes things easier, like Asus makes NUC products now.

The city bought a fleet of trucks for re-cycling, drivers, pensions, special recycling containers, and more expense. If an item can be recycled profitably, someone will be more than happy to come and get it from you. For free.

The yard waste site was pretty good, at least they didn’t charge. It was conveniently located. Then the eee pee aye discovered it was by a river, and theoretically, leaves could get in the river if a flood were to occur. So that will never do. Re-located to a pain in the ass location. Modern life is just a series of bs expenses, crafted by misanthropic anti-humanists designed to impoverish or at least nickle and dime ya to death. Death by a thousand cuts.

It's not a serious problem. The buyer pays for the shipping, I print the label right there from the site, I wrap the package and put the label on it, and I drive it to one of several POs nearby. Living in this pesthole of an apartment complex as I do, I'd worry that the pickup guy wouldn't be able to find my place.

There a few guys who’ll drive around the neighborhood once people start putting garbage out and will pick up anything they think they can use or repair to resell within a few hours.

They ride around with the pickup bed full of discarded stuff.

Ace and all...the very tiny mercy is that her children will not remember this. They will be sheltered. His daughter will be fine with Daddy on a business trip with Jesus. She will want to go there, too (I know I am not helping but it is how they think, then they'll be ok moments later).

His memory will be kept alive for them with family, friends, videos and photos of him with them. There will be regrets, when they marry or big events that he is there in spirit. But the burden is on Erika, and may God continue to keep her strong. You can see the strength as she got stronger as she spoke.

I am thankful for family and friends to be by her side and see her through the coming weeks, until she is strong enough to want things "normal" again. The new normal without Charlie.

Pray for them often. They need your prayers and the comfort from them is felt.

Are they telling their employees "Don't print anything inflammatory or political, period"? Or are they saying "It doesn't matter what it is, print it, it's none of your business"? 193 I recently worked in a division of the worlds largest defense contractor and that delete every email, chat or other electronic record after 3 months.

Most projects go on for a year or so and it makes it incredibly difficult to keep things on track because the history disappears and all you have is the narrative at the current time.

Completely erases accountability.

I asked one of the senior engineers why they did that and he said it was because of the liability. If some engineer said something in an email about possibly something weird was going on with the altimeter box, that could influence a lawsuit.

Say a plane goes down and the FAA wants to know what happened to the radar altimeter. There would be no record of anyone saying there was a problem.

I really can't imagine this is OK with the DOE and the FAA but hey, DC is nest of vipers.

Political ads and posters are a print shops bread and butter.

I worked with a drummer who worked at a huge printing company in Baltimore and they always worked tons of overtime starting before any major election.

He was a cool dude and had worked there a long time. He would bring the rest of the guys all kinds of posters for jazz performances and posters of some major jazz artists that business with them.
