Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - Sept 24, 2025 [Gangster of Love Rex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONTwhich means another random assortment of interweb debris. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Thank you for indulging the musings of Philosopher Rex the prior two Wednesdays. (Who was that guy?) He's off thinking more big thoughts and may return at some point. You never know. Such are the whims of the ONT. [Random top photo: Seattle]By applying information theory and algorithmic complexity, Endres analyzed what it would take for the earliest living cell, known as a protocell, to self-assemble from simple chemical components. This mathematical perspective demonstrates how improbable such a process would be if left to chance under natural conditions. If only there was some explanation... ![]() A little more than an hour after liftoff, the Starship guided itself to a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean northwest of Australia. The ship came within 10 feet (3 meters) of its targeted splashdown point, near an inflatable buoy in position to record its final descent. SpaceX engineers noticed the booster's performance on descent in flight doesn't match predictions from computer models or wind tunnel tests. In ground experiments, the booster encounters unstable buffeting as it slows below the speed of sound. Based on those results, "[we] should not be able to do what we do with our maneuver coming back with a booster, but we've been able to essentially show through flight that we have more stability than either CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) or the wind tunnels show that we have," Gerstenmaier said.So....eels should not exist, life should not exist and a Starship Booster should not be able to fly. And yet... Wonder what Philosopher Rex would make of that. One thing for sure, love stinks ![]() The spotted ratfish is a two-foot-long fish with a big head and a long, skinny tail that lives in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. It belongs to a group of fish called chimaeras that are closely related to sharks. (Chimaeras are sometimes called ghost sharks.) Like most vertebrate creatures, it has teeth in its mouth. Unlike other vertebrates it also has teeth in another location: its forehead. It uses these forehead teeth for sex. The ratfish's extra teeth line a cartilaginous appendage called a tenaculum that in males can be erected and deployed to grasp a female during mating. Many fish have clasping appendages near the pelvis that they use to hold their mate close during the deed. The spotted ratfish has the tenaculum in addition to pelvic claspers. It takes something special to prevent "ghost sharks" from being the strangest part of the story. ![]()

NEW: Three suspects arrested after a Texas youth baseball coach was shot during a pregame prayer with his players, according to local media. Mahmood Abdelsalam Rababah, 23, Ahmad Mawed, 21, and Mustafa Mohammad Matalgah, 27, have been arrested. According to the Waller County Sheriff’s Office, the men fired their guns from a "nearby pasture" towards the baseball field. The coach was reportedly saying a prayer before the game with his team when he was shot in the shoulder. "He literally took the bullet for a child that was to his left, and so thankfully we avoided a major disaster. Still very, very emotional over it," said Houston Warriors founder Andy Baize to KHOU 11. The field known as 'The Rac' claims the men were "target practicing" from 600-700 yards away. "People shoot on their land all the time. At the time, we were unaware of anything in season. Now that we have more information, we know that there were 3 individuals target practicing 600/700 yards away," they said on Facebook, according to NBC. The coach was airlifted to a hospital and has since been released. The men were taken into custody on felony charges of deadly conduct with a firearm. Slightly amused and possibly encouraged a very tiny bit, ICE posted on X that "Business owners - it's time to get right with the law ..... We're enforcing the law across the board - all businesses in all industries."
Umm. OK. You've had fairly detailed strategies for enforcement against businesses - with minimal economic disruption, and minimal risk/cost/effort to ICE - since the *first* Trump term, sitting on your desks. Interesting they would post this kind of stuff. They know it's the glaring omission from current action. They also know it would be, by far, the most efficient, low-risk, and powerful tool to start reversing the 90% of the damage from mass illegal migration that is *not* criminal behavior. It was interesting to me, that Johnny Von Neumann, one of the most brilliant physicists of all time, was known to have had a deathbed conversion. He seemed to believe that the world made sense with a God, than a world without God. I’m not sure he was particularly areligious or agnostic during his life but at the end he might have been hedging his bets. Sort of a Pascal’s Wager kind of thing.

The CBO projects that the U.S. population will increase from 350 million people in 2025 to 367 million people in 2055.
It will be smaller and grow more slowly over the next 30 years, on average, than the agency previously projected it would. Their projection suggests that the U.S. will add only 17 million new residents over the next 30 years. That will be the slowest population growth in the country’s history. The Big Bang is supported by General Relativity plus the observation that most galaxies are receding from us. General Relativity (plus Special Relativity) are supported by the fact that GPS works (save your jibes, it wouldn’t work at all without both theories). GR tells us that the Universe is unstable: it must expand or contract. We see that it is expanding. Run the model backwards and everywhere contracts down to a point (theory actually fails at this point, as we don’t know how to treat the singularity: it requires quantum gravity, which we don’t really understand). Ergo, the Big Bang: the previous theory presumed a steady state Universe with continuous creation occurring everywhere to account for the expansion of the Universe. This wasn’t compatible with entropic considerations, but those aspects of the previous theory are not a concern since the theory has been discarded. The Steady State Universe was however the astronomer Hoyle’s belief. IIRC he was the one who came up with the derisive name “Big Bang” to poke fun at the theory espoused by Lemaître, Gamow and others of a start and evolution over time for the Universe.

Einstein referred to the Cosmological Constant as his greatest blunder. When developing General Relativity (and that's a long, interesting history), he realized the global solutions would be dynamic, either expanding or contracting. He introduced the Cosmological Constant as a fudge factor to allow for a static universe, which was thought at the time (and even at that stage, it's easy to forget, they didn't realize just how large the universe was. The notion of galaxies wasn't even understood). And then came Hubble.... Thus, GR could've predicted the expansion of the universe, hence Einstein declared it his greatest blunder. The Cosmological constant is back, however, so even when Uncle Al blundered, he done good. This allows for accelerating expansion. You can also move the term to the right hand side of the field equations and think of it as source term. When you do that, you call that "dark energy" (not to be confused with dark matter). So, on the one hand, you can think of it as just a feature of gravity. Empty spacetime "expands", it's not flat. Or you can think of it as some sort of "stuff" that acts like anti-gravity. Most of think of it as the latter, as when it's some sort of "stuff" you can do more things with it as a source term than a mere constant term can do. But now, with much better data (Gaia and Hubble), that may just be a close encounter, not a collision. 2 trillion is the high estimate . How little we know is indicated by the fact ‘experts’ estimate the number of galaxies between 200 billion and 2 trillion. That’s a pretty big margin of error.
The observable universe diameter is about 93 billion light years . The average size of a Galaxy is between 3000 and 300,000 light years. I fall on the lower side of the estimate number of galaxies. Posted by: The way I see it at September 24, 2025 11:43 PM (EYmYM) 276

Or inverted crucifixion? From what I've read, drawing and quartering as was done in 1500s Britain was about as nasty as it got. Being a spectator for your disembowlment was a bad way to go. The puritans of Massachusetts burned both women and men at the stake. I think a lot of their descendants would do that to MAGA folk today if they could. Read about Elizabeth I and Enery the 8 and you understand how beheading on the block was the noble way to get snuffed, while the poor got it in mooch more horrible ways. Mooch more. Then there was the idigenos of the north american plains, the horse indians called the comanches. Their methods took days. Oh what a mess is man. To be so crewell. Posted by: M. As I've speculated before, could well be the administration is strategerizing about where/which public officials to prosecute for their flagrant aiding/sheltering illegals. In our degraded society, recall, it requires great planning and forethought to find a jury that will convict outrageous and damaging lawlessness by public officials.
One would hope that tough-guy Homan actually had done his homework when he mouthed off about arresting that dips**t mayor of Denver or whoever. But not so sure. As to the obvious first response to "sanctuary" idiocy, from the outset - conditioning appropriations - the fact that it hasn't even been raised as an option, even by this president (both terms, so far), is a nice reminder of how far gone things are. Consider the 1000 yard model of the Solar System. Plop a basketball down. Call that Sol. Place a peppercorn 25 yards away. That's Erf. Now place a walnut 132 yards away. That's Jupiter. Now place a little speck of dust 1000 yards away. That's Pluto. (I left out the other planets for brevity). Now, let the Milky Way diameter be the width of the continental US. Imagine that pinwheel imposed on a map of the US. The thickness of the thin disc, where most of the action is would be about 30 miles. So, if the midplane is ground level, the disc would go from 15 miles below to 15 miles high. Now, how big would our 1000 yard solar system be in that? Take a quarter, and plop in on the ground in east Tennessee. Well, we're going on the upswing through the midplane. Put that quarter somewhere high in the air over east Tennessee. When humans glorify the True God as revealed in the Bible, then we become capable of living together in a loving society with loving spouses & children in joy & peace. When humans refuse to glorify the True God as revealed in the Bible, we will quickly become Somalia. The only reason USA isn’t Somalia is because we had 200+ years of near-Christian laws before we drove the Bible out of our schools beginning in 1962. We have been hurtling towards Somalia status, but it takes a long time to erase the blessings of Jesus Christ from a culture. Posted by: Random Lurker at September 25, 2025 12:33 AM (LgG1g) 360

For His Glory: The Bible consistently emphasizes that God created the universe for His glory. Isaiah 43:7 states, "Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory." This indicates that the ultimate purpose of creation is to reflect and honor God's greatness.
why does God need glory? - "need" might be the wrong term. "want" is possible I guess, but I think it's more a matter of communicating to us something that our language can't adequately describe. Similar to the way that "love" is just a few letters until you've witnessed it motivate someone to make some real sacrifice. Posted by: Methos at September 25, 2025 12:47 AM (vSvIl) 381

That's "off-air" networks such as Disney, Netflix, etc. If you pay for it, your voice gets heard about what gets shown. "On-air" is over spectrums controlled by the government and has rules and regulations. There would need to be big changes to allow the networks to change what they can show. I can easily imagine the networks going to FCC and trying to get "community standards" rules made null and void.
Their argument: "this isn't the 1970s anymore. EVERYONE has access to almost everything, all they have to do is pay a paltry $8 a month or something, which is affordable by everyone. Why are we stuck with all these ancient rules, just because we broadcast 'over the air'?" Aubrey, Texas—known for its horse ranches and small-town charm—is now being transformed into a massive Islamic enclave. The Islamic Center of Aubrey has just purchased 25 acres to build a sprawling mega-mosque, Islamic school, seminary, and Sharia-compliant businesses—all designed to fund and expand Islam’s dominance in Texas. This isn’t about faith—it’s about political and territorial control. They’re planting ideological strongholds in small Texas towns just like they’ve done across Europe, again much more: https://tinyurl.com/4bfkft37 Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at September 25, 2025 01:32 AM (2szCg) 428

My college boyfriend went to a Rolling Stones concert. He said that they were obviously drunk and did a terrible show.
Posted by: nerdygirl Steven Tyler was so drunk he could barely slur the lyrics but basically they were just assh*les. Saw Joe Cocker so drunk his backup singers were holding him up. Still a great show. He fell off the stage the next night in Seattle and canceled the rest of his tour. Zep was drinking the entire concert which lasted nearly 4 hours. They thrived on the audience. Posted by: Sock Monkey * sporting my Andrew Breitbart attitude at September 25, 2025 01:16 AM (AG3iD) Multi band shows are a blast, but damn its where I witnessed the biggest parties where people get trashed. Picture a MoMe where everybody is in one of the bands, and just like a mome where you have a common interest. Instead of guns, and booze, and socializing, you got guitars/instruments, booze, and socializing. Some members have crossed paths with other members over the years, or have done shows together, etc. Its a MoMe for musicians. Part reunion, part party, etc. We just go a little heavier on mayhem than a mome. lol Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 25, 2025 01:36 AM (snZF9) 432

Had a thought re the discussion on Tylenol earlier. I checked the label on a Tylenol bottle and it proves that people, by and large, don't read the labels. It says right on there that if you are pregnant or breast feeding ask a health care professional before taking Tylenol. In other words, not recommended by the company itself.

I can easily imagine the networks going to FCC and trying to get "community standards" rules made null and void.
Their argument: "this isn't the 1970s anymore. EVERYONE has access to almost everything, all they have to do is pay a paltry $8 a month or something, which is affordable by everyone. Why are we stuck with all these ancient rules, just because we broadcast 'over the air'?" If FCC still sez "don't care, stick with the standards," then the networks could decide to give up on over-the-air programming and go 100% streaming/cable, where there are no "community standards" rules. Posted by: qdpsteve at September 25, 2025 01:02 AM (/p+XQ) I sincerely hope not. Look at the abomination Star Trek turned into once the writers were "free" from the chains of over the air standards. A complete mess of gore, decapitations, and supposedly intelligent and enlightened professionals cussing like sailors. The writers devolved into being edgy teenagers who are obsessed with the idea that maturity is only what is forbidden to children. Like watching a clean comic that had to rely solely on the strength of his material decide to just swear every other word instead of writing actual jokes. This is incomplete:
God doesn’t need glory: He is Glory. Glory: God’s presence. In the Hebrew Bible, the concept of glory is expressed with several Hebrew words, including “hod” and “kavod.” Later, these original Hebrew Bible concepts for glory were translated in the Christian Testament as the Greek word “doxa.” Also: Honor, reputation, and splendor. And: Ethical significance. The word “glory” comes to have an ethical significance because, like the holiness with which it is associated in Isaiah 6, it is connected with Yahweh, who is more and more exclusively viewed as an ethical being. Here are some other biblical definitions of the word “glory”: “In all His glory.” In this manner, the word glory is used to express the worth and value of something in terms of importance and power. “Show me Your glory.” In this sense, God’s glory refers to His greatness and splendor. “From glory to glory.” We were created in the image of God and as Christians we reflect Christ’s glory, just as Jesus reflected the glory of his Father in heaven. You are to recognize His Glory in whatever small way you are able. As it is infinite and you are finite, you cannot see it but in glimpses. Well, my wrenching today consisted of getting the cable throttle setup for the Avanti mostly installed. Pedal assembly is bolted to firewall on a bracket I made. Made a bushing for where the cable passes through the firewall. And made a plastic shoulder bushing to retain the cable end in the end of the pedal arm. Threaded the cable through, and if I tug on the engine end of the cable, I can make the pedal move.
I cut a cable quadrant off the throttle body from the defunct Suburban engine, and will figure out a way to adapt it to the Quadrajet carburetor. Also have to ensure that the attachment point for the transmission throttle valve cable is at the right radius and suitably clocked. so as to have the full range of movement of the throttle arm be equal to the full range of movement of the transmission throttle valve. All I have read stresses that this is crucial to the transmission living long and prospering. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 25, 2025 02:20 AM (o46Y5) 484

Not much else would be flying around at almost 0300 EST. It wasn't a bat. To big and flew like a large bird. It was fast and I lost site of it. Lots of lighting around. I'm in a large metro area. I've seen large owls around Babylon DC, but I was on a golf course. Kinda cool. Wish I got a better look at it.
