He was brave.” “I wonder if he was fearless. I wonder if he was scared. I wonder if he just did it anyway.”
Current CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Antonio Neri rose from call center agent at the company to chief executive officer. Doug McMillon, Walmart CEO, started off with a summer gig helping to unload trucks. It’s a similar story for GM CEO Mary Barra, who began on the assembly line at the automaker as an 18-year old. Those are the kinds of career ladder success arcs that have inspired workers, and Hollywood, but as AI is set to replace many entry-level jobs, it may also write that corporate character out of the plot. The rise of AI has coincided with considerable organizational flattening, especially among middle management ranks. At the same time, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is among those who forecast 50% of entry-level jobs may be wiped out by AI as the technology improves, including being able to work eight-hour shifts without a break.Check out the whole thing. Personally, I think there will be a tipping point of backlash against AI. I find it mostly frustrating and ineffective. But I'm also older than 29. What say you? For the first time in more than thirty years, the heaviest nucleus decaying via proton emission has been measured. The previous similar breakthrough was achieved in 1996. The radioactive decay of atomic nuclei has been one of the keystones of nuclear physics since the beginning of nuclear research. Now the heaviest nucleus decaying via proton emission has been measured in the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Please check out the whole thing and provide a non-AI summary! ![]() If you’re on a mission to visit some of the most underrated national parks across the U.S., you should probably have Petrified Forest on your radar. Located in northeastern Arizona, it’s one of the state’s three national parks, alongside Grand Canyon National Park and Saguaro National Park. While a trip to the park will always be worthwhile, it'll be particularly fitting to visit it next year. In 2026, the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the “Mother Road" and Petrified Forest is the only national park with a section of Historic Route 66. The remnants of the famed highway—including a line of now-weathered telephone poles—are far from the only things to see within this nearly 222,000-acre, semi-arid park, though. Petrified Forest National Park is best known for its 200-million-plus-year-old plant and animal fossils from the Triassic Period, or the “Dawn of the Dinosaurs.” It’s a collection that includes the eponymous petrified logs, which were formed after trees were buried in an ancient river system; minerals then absorbed into the wood and replaced the organic material. The structures we see today are made up of nearly solid quartz, and the impurities within the quartz (like iron and carbon) result in a display of stunning colors.Definitely an area of our beautiful country that's worth checking out! ----- 9 Best Train Museums to Visit in the U.S. "Whether you’re interested in history, technology, or a mix of both, these train museums will keep you entertained for hours." ![]() (B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland) from thisdayinmusic.com Born on this date in 1943: American percussionist and musicologist Mickey Hart, best known as one of the two drummers of the rock band Grateful Dead. As a failed (for the moment) writer, I've noticed quite a few "booktubers" talk about the effect AI will have on the publishing biz. Why pay a living person advance money and a royalty if you can have some schlub type in a bunch of commands to a bot and have it spit out a ready-made book? AI could kill the human writer, or not if the reading public rebels against it. We'll have to wait and see. Posted by: OrangeEnt at September 11, 2025 10:13 PM (0eaVi) 66

If you want to know why Charlie was assassinated - the linked video is one of the reasons why.
https://tinyurl.com/22jsbnmd It is an almost 6 minute video of him responding to the question of, "Was the U.S. founded as a Christian nation?" He barely stops for breath while he is talking because he has so much information he wishes to convey. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the source material. They had to kill him - because the authoritarian Left had no one that could effectively rebut him. This particular answer is not important, it is that he could answer MANY complex questions in a similar fashion. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at September 11, 2025 10:15 PM (HlyYF) 70

9 Best Train Museums to Visit in the U.S.
"Whether you’re interested in history, technology, or a mix of both, these train museums will keep you entertained for hours." ----------------- I can get behind most of this list. I've been to most, and the most fun on this list is the Nevada museum in Carson City. My two favorites that I've been to aren't on the list, though: the V&T museum in Truckee, CA, and the greatest of all, the Railroader's Memorial Museum in Altoona, PA (my grandfather was a fireman on the Pennsy in the days of steam). I don't think anyone is expecting teevee show wrap up speed, but it doesn't help when Kash says "we have the suspect in custody," only to have to say "oops" hours later. Why not say "we have A PERSON OF INTERST in custody." We all understand that phrase. But he said "THE SUSPECT." Posted by: BurtTC at September 11, 2025 10:37 PM (lH8E4) 171

As it stands right now, AI is, outside of rendering graphics (e.g., "art"), mostly vaporware.
Its amazing to me how worthless the AI answer usually is on search results. Phrase the search in the form of a question and the first sentence is a categorical statement followed by an explanatory second sentence that explains the answer to a different question. Example: Earlier today I did a search on Did John Wyndham ever write a short story with the characters from The Chrysalids? No, John Wyndham never wrote a short story with the characters from The Chrysalids. The Chrysalids is a science fiction novel. And then more about it being a novel which of course doesnt have anything to do with the actual question. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at September 11, 2025 10:38 PM (EXyHK) 175

Mickey Hart was also the original drummer for the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Jerry was the original steel guitar player. Then Spencer Dryden (R&R HOF drummer for Jefferson Airplane) was persuaded to take the NRPS drummer job, and Buddy Cage took the pedal steel gig. This allowed NRPS to be able to tour independently of the Dead. Spencer had quit music altogether for about a year, because he was horrified by Altamont.

AI: AI is heralded as the future by people who are either tech enthusiasts or completely ignorant about how the AI actually works (the Venn diagrams overlap). I haven't seen one that's actually useful for the work I do. The hallucinations are not getting better; they're getting worse. We already know that AIs rapidly break down when they start getting trained on AI-generated data, and given how many people have decided to have AI write their essays for them, instead of thinking themselves, we're headed that way. I don't think AI is competitive- infrastructure costs are too high and they don't currently charge us for the massive electricity use that these computers need. What I'm most worried about with AI: 1. Who watches the watchmen? 2. The growing divide between those that get their info from AIs (which give false info regularly) and those that don't. LIBs. simply can't understand it.... If JUST ONE PERSON dies that isn't part of the plan People JUST LOSE THEIR MINDS! Why shouldn't the Socialists decide who must be sacrificed so they may live? Why shouldn't they hate-that-man who has a dollar more than them -- that dollar rightfully belongs to them! LIBs plead for a Morality which holds COMPROMISE as its standard of Value, making it possible to judge Virtue on the basis of the number of Values which one is willing to Betray. To them, no living person is more important than the rocks, trees and the dirt. What's the big deal? Their ceaseless quest for the unearned remains forever ceaseless because they truly believe life, itself is devoid of both value and meaning. I speak my mind here at the AoSHQ, but in real life I'm a much bigger softie. I'm the chair of the local RTC in my CT town, and we're in the middle of a municipal election. Even as I know about how the oppressive Left has made it so that people have gotten pilloried on FB, NextDoor and other social media for speaking obvious truths about boys and girls (among other topics), part of me - as a small-town resident - wants to be seen as a good neighbor. It's just hard to treat another human being the way that you may think about their views, when you see them face-to-face at some local hangout.
The death of Charlie Kirk has changed that for me. If that guy died for simply having the courage of speaking his mind, and I believe in the sanctity of 1A, then the least I can do is tell the truth a little louder in love when I think it necessary. And these days, it is more than ever. Especially these days. So, going forward, I'm going to try and speak the truth with the words 'Je suis Charlie' ringing in my head. If Charlie did it, so can I. -We're all stunned by a really cute blonde working in physics. -The scientists discovered the heaviest proton-emitting nucleus known to date. They're trying to understand radioactive decay. -The shape of the parent nucleus affects how the proton is emitted and how that nucleus is deformed when they examine it in the particle accelerator. This one had a weird shape that was kinda like a watermelon. -The 'stunned' in the headline appears to just be marketing. Posted by: Nerd Herd at September 11, 2025 10:58 PM (6nQni) 255
Until there is a massive breakthrough in computing power, AI will remain mostly useless.
------ I don't think that the issue is computing power, I think the issue is the 'ability' to use reasoning. By way of example, I might ask a friend, 'Is the weather nice?'. Pretty simple question, and anyone could provide a reasonable answer. 'AI' might use a myriad of sensors, cameras, etc., etc., and reply in a sort of academic sense, but it would probably be stymied by what constitutes 'nice'. Sooner or later 'AI' will begin to rely on data produced by other 'AI'. It is happening already. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at September 11, 2025 10:59 PM (XeU6L) 256

LLMs are glorified autocorrect- they are not made to tell you the truth, just whatever is more likely (based on their training data) to be the next character or set of characters after the words you wrote in your query. They are programmed to keep you interacting with them- thus the obsequious behavior, the 'yes, you're always right, here's how to commit suicide' reports. Proton emission: when an atom's nucleus decays by emitting a single proton. It's very rare.
You've probably heard of alpha and beta decay -- these are common. In the former, a Helium nucleus is emitted (two protons, two neutrons), the most famous example of which is Uranium-238 decaying to Uranium-234. Beta decay is when a neutron in the atom's nucleus transforms into a proton or vice versa, and emits an electron (or positron for the reverse reaction). So they found a fat heavy new element that emits a proton and decays to a slightly lighter element. Both are already very short-lived -- they have to make them in the lab. It's not the kind of stuff you can dig out of the ground. Posted by: Don't blame the alligators at September 11, 2025 11:08 PM (1Nv0l) 286

My favorite description of AI is that it's like an earnest 10th-grader who will tell you whatever they think will make you happy.
Posted by: Nerd Herd Heh Was thinking that most AI stuff I have seen looks like a 10th grader trying to fake a book report on a book they just skimmed, did not really read, and didn't understand (especially any symbolism that your average caveman would grok)... "Personally, I think there will be a tipping point of backlash against AI. I find it mostly frustrating and ineffective"
It is usually very good at bullshitting - the LLMs - which is amazing for art and less amazing for where the rubber meets the road. Most of these things have no model of facts, just mathematical relationships between things. They are the performer who "guesses" correct things, questioning an audience member. People also know many things that aren't true and misremember shit, but usually not the things important to us so we don't notice as much when we do it. They can for sure manage a lot of menial customer facing tasks, but it will be hard to keep them on script. As a coding tool, anything remotely serious requires that you already know what you are doing and check the work, like the AI is an intern. There are also some rough issues where tools are designed with interfaces for humans, but the AI is most efficient shitting out the underlying data... potentially calling for tools to be re-envisioned for checking AI output vs for human input. Entertainment applications will be AMAZING. The NPC problem will get worse, phone zombies on steroids. Posted by: heya at September 12, 2025 12:04 AM (NES2I) 441

Needed a break from the last couple days of constant grim news watching, so I hit up a friend and went to the Wake Forest/NC State game. Wake lost, but still a nice respite from reality.

I'll have a go at the physics question though my PhD is in biophysics and not nuclear physics.
Assuming the Val-U-Rite hasn't pickled the brain cells you programmed in high school physics, you remember that the atomic nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons. The number of protons determines what element we are looking at (gold or lead, oxygen or nitrogen) and the balance of neutrons and protons determines how the nucleus of the atom behaves. Some combinations are stable (thankfully!) while others are prone to decompose (sometimes incredibly slow and sometimes incredibly fast, but usually pretty fast). A carbon atom with 6 protons and 6 neutrons is stable (carbon-12) and a carbon with 6 protons and 6 neutrons (carbon-13) is also stable, but if you add another neutron to the nucleus (6 protons and 8 neutrons), it won't hold together: that's carbon-14. The extra neutron causing all the fuss disintegrates into a proton, an electron, and an electron antineutrino. The nucleus then has 7 protons and 7 neutrons and settles down into a stable life as nitrogen-14. Posted by: Otto Zilch at September 12, 2025 12:41 AM (Ws2ua) 469

Now that we have that part down, let's look at that astatine. Nuclei are most likely to be stable when there's a balance of protons and neutrons, and as you go down the periodic table, you want a few more neutrons than protons. The farther you get from that zone of stability (more neutrons or fewer neutrons), the more unstable the isotope gets (with some exceptions that are really cool if you understand physics)
Astatine is the heaviest halogen (think fluorine and chlorine), and while you can find it in the earth's crust, it's extremely rare because none of its isotopes are stable. It has 85 protons, and the least unstable isotope is At-210, which has 125 neutrons. Our Finnish hottie (never mind the elbows, great smile!) has created the lightest isotope of astatine, At-188 with only 103 neutrons. Isotopes like these are so unstable you won't ever catch the atom itself: you have to detect it by recognizing the pieces it decayed into. Quiz on Monday, class dismissed! The entire third member? How did the odd one get in there?
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at September 12, 2025 12:55 AM (XeU6L) The entire car was put together from a parts car plus "parts". It is a mongrel. Drives nice, though. It has a 283 Chevy (McKinnon) engine from a 1965 or '66 Studebaker (going by serial number; was not out of a Chevy or Canadian Pontiac) coupled to a GM Turbo 350 transmission, which is a lot newer than the engine. Rear axle was a Model 27 Spicer from a Studebaker Lark, probably. Ratio 3.07, and it had limited slip in it. 27's were used in 6 cylinder cars, and V8's for non heavy-duty uses. So it's getting a Model 44 Spicer (a very tough axle) with 3.54 gears. I'm not sure about the condition of the gears and bearings in it, so Job #1 is to road test it and listen for expensive noises. If it runs quiet, it stays in the car; if it sounds bad, I have a Model 44 with 3.31 gears to use instead. End game is to replace the TH 350 with a 700R4. The 283 engine runs real fine, and isn't going anywhere. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 12, 2025 01:04 AM (Ex5yw) 490

The TH350 in this car has a bad case of converter drainback: the front pump bushing is worn, lets air into the torque converter, and the fluid runs back into the pan, overflows it, and it leaks out on the ground, in some volume. Works great, otherwise. I have the parts to repair it. Plan is to repair that TH350, and put it into an '83 El Camino which I got that has a well and truly shot TH350 in it. Abruptly de-lurking here after many years. It seems like a good day for it. In any event, I've long been a big fan of Mike Rowe, whom I first saw in a gig that seems quite bizarre now: he was a QVC presenter.
Home shopping has long been a popular pastime in my household, but way back when when it first intruded upon my life I thought it was dreadful. Then I started to notice one guy who presented using intelligent and hilarious monologues, which were just a bit edgy under the circumstances. There was a lot of self-deprecating, slightly absurd humor, and very little hype if any. It was Mike Rowe. He would tell anecdotal stories and weave the product into them, more or less. They were edgy because one could easily imagine the product maker preferring to see a harder sell. And. as I recall, he did refer to that aspect of things at times. In any event, his presentations became appointment viewing for me, and I have been a fan ever since. Posted by: Otis Criblecoblis at September 12, 2025 02:06 AM (caMfM) 521

And JD Vance helped put Charlie into the hearse. They had a big motorcycle escort down the freeways and JD was at Charlie's left shoulder wheeling him into the Mortuary. Posted by: DBCooper at September 12, 2025 02:14 AM (xK0s8) 526

Thanks, Puddleglum. I have been around here since 2008, and back in the Maetenloch days was a frequent ONT poster. Then a bicuspid aortic valve became a problem, and I had to withdraw from active duty for the long period of replacement and recovery. But I'm back now, after a few ablations.

You are assuming the tech won't change or improve - a poor assumption. If people looking at computers in the 60s were to estimate how big a computer that could do all the things your cell phone can do would have to be, they would say it would have to take up several city blocks.

He has pictures of him training with sniper type gear... and the weapon used is so old it won't be in any ATF database... someone helped his escape route... they need to dig into his electronics with actually good IT types... to be able to rebuild his messages. More pondering here: The Cartels would love nothing more than this country tearing its self apart with a Hot Civil War instead of a Cold Civil War. They could pull it off. They have trained personnel (sadly, we probably trained them) who could train someone else and pay them. Just bringing this up because if another assassination happens but this time its some popular leftist, then this is being done by an outside source.

Yeah, nothing good happens at this hour. Even worse, that somebody actually *calls* at this hour. Hope it was simply a wrong number! Posted by: JQ at September 12, 2025 04:21 AM (rdVOm) No no, not a wrong number. It's a family member, calling about a crisis happening with another family member. Sometimes it seems crystal clear the right approach to take, but then you realize, I'm not in the middle of it, so what looks clear to me doesn't look so clear to the person who's going through it.
