Apple has announced its new phones: The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and the iPhone Air. (Tom's Hardware)

These start at eight times the price of my Moto G14 from last year, and with the 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max go up to 21 times the price - ranging from very expensive to painfully expensive.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone Air feature the new six-core A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max feature the new six-core A19 Pro chip.

Yeah, Apple is really phoning it in with this announcement.

Tech News

Microsoft is battling those cheap key resellers in court, arguing that its software licenses can't be resold because they do not license the software. (Tom's Hardware)

Specifically that yes they license the software but only the software, not, for example, the user interface that allows you to use the software.

Apparently the key resale market is enabled by European law and Microsoft wants desperately to kill it, but this argument is far worse than the disease itself.
Claude can now use Excel. (Anthropic)

Making it so that AI can drive programs that actually work rather than attempting to do everything itself and inevitably getting it wrong is a potentially positive step, though I'm not sure it's worth $115 billion.

The US government has filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court, siding firmly with Cox against the $1 billion decision against it from a jury verdict in the inferior courts, since upheld by the Fourth Circuit. (TorrentFreak)

Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, and Pinterest have also sided with Cox.

So have AT&T and Verizon, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Library Association, Re:Create, Public Knowledge, the CCIA, the ACLU, a collection of legal scholars, the Internet Society, and the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Lenovo's Yoga Tab is a smaller, cheaper, and, oddly, higher resolution version of the existing Yoga Tab Plus. (Liliputing)

Scaled down from 12.7" to 11.1" - making it pretty standard for a full size tablet and almost exactly the same size and weight as the budget Idea Tab I mentioned a couple of days ago - it also boasts a 3200x2000 display, which is so sharp you could cut yourself.

It features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 12GB of RAM, the same as my Legion Tab, putting it in pretty serious performance territory too.

Price is expected to be $550 when it ships next month.

I still have my iPhone 5S. I use it as my Alarm Clock. Really. Still has original battery.

It's teeny weeny. I can barely read the text on the screen.
I need a HUGE phone so I can see. I might even just get a little Tablet to replace my LG V60 with the nice, big 6.8" display.

Windows 11 isn’t too bad setting up.
You should probably go ahead and sign up for a Microsoft account before you do. It will ask for that as soon as you connect it to WiFi during the setup process.

And opt out of everything you can, and don’t want or need, during setup - like Office 365, Xbox Gaming, One Drive, and all the stuff about sending Microsoft information so it can make Windows better (telemetry and bug/crash reports).

It will also make Edge the default browser until you install another one and choose it as default.

I haven’t installed it since AI & CoPilot were introduced so I don’t know if you can opt out of it.

The reason they don't make phones bigger than 6.9" is because girls hands aren't big enough.

I HATE 18:9 aspect displays, now they're doing 20:9, but they had to do it so they could sell larger displays that were still "one-handed" devices.

I liked my 5S for years until the battery died and expanded.

I loved my 4S more, that was my favorite I’ve ever had. Had the glass back with the slim metal ring around the phone.

That one got completely bricked during an iOS update about a year or two after I got it.
Which is how I ended up with a 5S.

I think you can set up a local user account that isn't tied to a MS account, and then log in with ".\" before your username. I don't know how, though. Easier to just make a burner gmail account with fake info and then make an MS "account" tied to that instead.

I’d go that route too if possible, but she said she wasn’t a computer person so I didn’t want to confuse her with the terminal commands you’ve got to do, or setting it up without an internet connection, which you’ve got to do to avoid using a MS account.

I think the distinction here is GUIs are protected by copyrights while the computer code (The methods and algorithms) cannot be protected by a copyright and are only protected by licensing agreements. As I understand the EU resale law computer licenses can be resold and are silent about the copyright aspect. At first glance, the distinction between computer code and GUIs seems to be a distinction without difference. However, when the distinct legal protections are factored in the argument Microsoft is making effectively, yes, you can resell the license but you cannot resell the GUI as it violates the copyright protections.

The only time I bought a "flagship" phone was back in the 90s, when I bought a Motorola StarTAC. It was a business expense and very much met my convenience needs at the time. Size mattered.

I still business-expense my phone purchases but I have never found the need to buy a phone for more than $180-250. Still very happy with my 3-4 year old unlocked Samsung Galaxy A52, purchased from Amazon.

And I own no Apple products.

Get all you can out of the expensive little things, I say.

$699 for the cheapest iPhone today (16e).

They will last if you take care of them.

I don’t know why the phone manufacturers keep to the yearly model release like they’re a car company.

Apple & Samsung could easily update their lines every two or three years and still make bank.
It’s always seemed wasteful to me.

71 Perpetual licenses are or anything but perpetual and software companies have sly and interesting ways to extinguish them. Photoshop CS6 was purchased with a perpetual license with a restriction that it could only have so many active instances. This was not a problem as long as Adobe provided a method to deactivate instances. Somewhere along the line they quietly got rid of the deactivation functionality and when I went to install my Photoshop on my new PC I hit that limit and soon discovered I had no way to fix matters. Instantly my perpetual license died.

It’s an option, but I’d like to get some updates and if you get an 8 or 12, you’re getting few, if any, updates except for security.

83 Heads up! Just went through Windows 10 Check Updates to upgrade to an extra year of Win10 security support. It was given to me at no cost even though MS says there's an extension fee involved.

I highly suspect the message you received is more or less a bug. Initially, the extension was supposed to cost consumers $30 per year and then they backpedaled and came up with a different route that involves $0. I'm guessing the message you received was never updated to reflect that change. I guess we'll have to wait until your bank account is drained before we find out.

My phone is on 16.x.x but you could turn on developer mode and install beta versions of 17, 18 or 26 if you're daring.

My needs are simple, phone, text, and reading AOS when on the bus as long as the phone can continue to do that, we're good.

94 The great thing about laptops these days is they’ve got the bezels down so small you can fit a 16 or 18” screen into a smaller body.

Used to be you had a 16” screen with a few inches of bezel all around so the laptop was huge.

Now my 16” screen fits in a chassis that’s about 14” wide.

The thing still weighs about 5 lbs., not counting the charger, though.

95 I currently have a Google 8 pro. This is the first flagship phone I've ever owned and and I'm paying for it with one of these crappy, 3-year free phone deals. I justified that with the understanding that I'm I'm always going to have a phone and hence the phone handcuffs wasn't that big a deal.

Prior to this phone I've always bought, used or cheap phones and got along just fine. I can say having this fancy ass phone It's a whole different experience and I think it's ruined my ability to ever go back to my cheap phone world.

I can now see why people whose primary computing device is a mobile phone are more than willing to pay lots of money for them. My value proposition is quite different since my primary device is still a PC and remarkably I don't think twice about having extremely nice PCs. Your mileage will vary.

Yeah, if I did that I’d be begging for some seriously slow response times.

It could probably handle most little things but if I tired an app made for a newer iOS I could break out the stopwatch and time the response times in minutes.

I remember the old 3G I had that was painfully slow even brand new.

You and I are in the same usage bucket. My usage boils down to using the phone in the car (music, radio type stuff, maps), reading AOS, texting, and phone. In that order. The phone is a supplementary device to my other computing needs.

I will take a wild ass guess here, but when we add up to total cost of all your other devices, they're way more than $1,500. I'm in the same boat it's has that. So yes, if I was down to one device maybe two, one of those foldables would be interesting. Of course that's never going to happen around my house because having less than 300 devices is a sin.

A rough ballpark for all of them combined is around $3500, so yeah, considerably cheaper.

But I wouldn’t want one device that folded out to an 8” screen.

I like a little more real estate on the screen and using an actual OS, not a locked down mobile OS.

116 Fetterman is a classic Union Democrat. Knows that the company is trying to screw the working man, but with the Union, it can be taken care of. In the 30's and 40's, unions were definitely Socialist/Communist in philosophy, but by the mid-50's the US unions had figured out that the way to play the game was to play a 3 corner game -company, union, government - rather than the obvious failures of far-left governments which had to.much power and screwed everyone.
That describes Fetterman. Don't mistake his support in these areas for a switch to libertarian/conservative views. He's still a big government guy.
