I get this notice from UPS last night at 11:43 pm about my Amazon delivery that hadn't moved since 8:48 am yesterday morning.
"All merchandise is missing and the empty carton was discarded. UPS will notify the sender., Sherman, TX, United States" My package left OKC on a UPS truck & made it to Ft. Worth. It then left Ft. @Wolfus Aurelius, re #53 yesterday's tech thread:
"I had a look at your suggestions about Linux installation. Sounds like it's a day's work with everything, including buying a hard drive to back up things." It can go that long, yes. To mitigate that, I divide it into a couple of pieces. The backup/compare should be started as an overnight job. Let the computer do the slow and boring part overnight while you sleep. If there's a "generate a log" option, turn that on. Also set it to not automatically exit when it's done all its steps so you can quickly review and see if there were any problems. What'd you think of the video? Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at September 09, 2025 05:29 AM (O7YUW) 28

This sounds reminiscent of Pets.com to pick one name from the dot com bubble. Or if you prefer the Shyster ShakeOut. A period of irrational exuberance seems to be a necessary part of these ground-changing paradigms that eventually go on to have long-term effects on the economy and eventually society more broadly. So yes, a good number of these AI companies are going to hit the wall sooner rather than later. What yet is still not clear is if AI will fizzle out and become a niche technology with niche but useful applications or after a shyster shakeout begin a long and sustainable journey until it becomes something that forever changes the economy and society in general. All I know is this: I have no idea how this is going to play out. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at September 09, 2025 05:44 AM (aJQjq) 40

@37/FenelonSpoke: Thanks for that. I'm trying to remember every day to start with prayer to God and ask him to guide and protect me through the day, to save me from mistakes I might otherwise make.
Sometimes I hit the ground running and forget to do that. I've noticed I get a reminder about why that's so important. Upon realizing what I forgot to do, I end up praying and include something like "Clue-by-four received and noted, thank you for that, and everything you've done for me, and continue to do for me." Wife is doing very well. This Sunday is our 23rd anniversary so I'm trying to figure out plans for it. We're going to the movies on Sunday so the dinner plans are probably going to be earlier than that so we're not leaving the pups alone for long. We have one guest who is going home today. The owners were going to pick him up yesterday but it's an hour's drive and they were exhausted. He goes home, two more show up for a week and that's the last batch before our anniversary trip. Pixy, Quando Quando Quando is quite the inspired 1960s song choice as it's a terrific representative of what was going on in the anti-rock and roll music world. And that cut from a movie is perfection. I had never seen this original version until tonight. The one I'm most familiar with is by Engelhardt Humperdinck.

Tell him it's the same here. Drivers who had exactly the same route (only with minor changes) had it easier. Drivers who got assigned to completely new routes are having to completely learn a new route and I don't know about most drivers, but it takes me at least 3 days of actually running it before I feel mildly comfortable with it, and it takes a good 2 weeks before it starts to become "automatic". We had a lot of drivers who had their route changed on them this year. There hasn't been any explanation offered as to why (that I know of) and there has been much complaining. Been there, cursed at how long it was taking. The video is sensuous and fascinating. If it was made recently, there was a definite attempt to make it look aged; the reddish tint of the first part especially looks like film stock that has faded and reddened. Oops, no: The Kessler Twins were born in 1936, and appeared on Red Skelton and Ed Sullivan in the Sixties. So this really is vintage. You sign up through an app, and if you get hired you show up at the Amazon Hub and pick up blocks of packages to deliver with the app giving your route. You get paid by the block and pick AMD choose when you want to do it. Sucks for you trying to get anything delivered. Sounds like they need to send somebody out who owns a 4x4. I’ve had Amazon make a delivery here as late as 10 p.m., a good many get delivered at night here.
And I’m in a suburb. The Amazon hub is about 5 miles away. Posted by: SpeakingOf at September 09, 2025 06:31 AM (6ydKt) 85
Those are Amazon Flex drivers.
It’s kinda like Uber for Amazon. Posted by: SpeakingOf Yeah. Amazon had originally contracted with UPS. Then, they wanted to try and save money so they went a different route. They used super Uber out of Paris, Texas, which didn't work worth a flip. So they went back to UPS. My normal UPS driver has no problem delivering. He knows where I live, his truck makes it easily. As long as they don't steal the package at the hub. Posted by: rickb223 at September 09, 2025 06:33 AM (SSRw1) 86

Being a consumer in the NYC area is a treat. Posted by: Accomack at September 09, 2025 06:44 AM (28cZF) I’ve had that pop up a few times, but it’s usually something like; “If you spend $23.17 more on this order you can get FREE overnight delivery if you order in the next 48 minutes”. There’s nothing I need from Amazon that quickly so I’ve only gotten one or two overnights. Most of my orders arrive in two or three days. Occasionally something has to be shipped across the country so I’ll see it in four or five days. Posted by: NR Pax We wound up building on 100 acres. We/I have 12. Her grandfather was the town postmaster. He originally bought 50. When the old couple that had the corner 50 passed on, he bought that too. Made the block of land almost square. When my wife's dad retired from Coca Cola, he bought half from him and they built their house. When wife's grandparents passed, her mom & dad inherited the original 50, giving them the 100 acres. Her dad gave us 12 & her son 12. When her dad passed, her son inherited the 88 acres. When I go, the he'll get the house and 12, for the grands. I'm lazy, and I'm fairly risk-adverse, so I don't want to play "short" games on my own, so I've been looking for an anti-AI (but stil tech heavy) ETF. I'd anyone aware of such a thing?
I definitely think we:'re in a bubble, and I remember the dot-boom. It took 10-12 years to finally use all fiber laid between 1998 and 2001. Going short on the whole fiber industry would have made a bundle. Note that I'm being fairly specific. The entire comm industry took it in the shorts, but they recovered in 3 years or so. That's what I expect with the AI bs. When it goes, it's going to take the whole of tech with it. "Tech" will recover in a couple of yesrs, but AI is gonna be the next fusion energy - perpetually 20 years out. Posted by: buddhaha at September 09, 2025 07:38 AM (+P94F) 127

@72/Wolfus Aurelius:
"... No, I wouldn't want to sit there while a backup runs. Been there, cursed at how long it was taking." Agreed, that's about as exciting as watching paint dry. "The video is sensuous and fascinating. If it was made recently, there was a definite attempt to make it look aged; the reddish tint of the first part especially looks like film stock that has faded and reddened. Oops, no: The Kessler Twins were born in 1936, and appeared on Red Skelton and Ed Sullivan in the Sixties. So this really is vintage." Okay, now I'm confused. I'm referring to the video that I linked to you on Sunday September 7 in the tech thread there, post # 246.
