First World Problems...

AV2025.jpg

I hate them. They are ugly, boringly shaped, and they bloom infrequently enough... and the flowers last just a short time... that it's mostly just a squat green blob.

So, Dildo, just toss them into the growing trash-heap of failed horticultural projects!

Except... they don't ever die. And even worse, those are from cuttings that are about 800 years old! Actually, they are from my wife's grandmother, which means they will be with me -- taunting me -- forever!

18 African Violets?

My grandmother loved her African violets. She would hang grow lights over them so she could grow them inside. That distinctive purple glow would shine right through her window shades, and she lived in a neighborhood which was becoming less-reputable every year.

Fortunately, she peacefully passed on before anything terrible happened.

29 Pssst, come here. Keep your voice down.

(Whispering) You can get rid of that plant with very little effort and make it look like an accident. First, move it to an area in the house with minimal ventilation. Then, over water. Make sure to get some water on the blooms themselves, especially if they are at the end of their display. Keep the leaves wet as well, and keep the plant out of sunlight but near the window so it gets all the heat, and none of direct light.

PRESTO!!! You've started you very own Botrytis fungal cultivation. The bastard will be dead in a week.

I was never here. (pulls up trench coat collar, looks around, walks away)

Berserker, most apple trees are grafted from an initial sport, the Gravenstein, for example goes back to the 1600's

37 Cool. The airing of grievances. I made a list this week.

1. Why the heck can't my digital scale be more accurate at the last digit? It's just 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8. Seriously, the rest of the numbers work.

2. Shavers should be easier to clean. I bought a Chinese shaver for my head and it's held together with magnets! It's so wonderful. I detach the top, tap out the debris and the thing seals together. I love that thing.

3. I bought a Miele vacuum a while back for about $1100 Canadian. Good reviews on Amazon except people complained about the weight. German product. I HATE THAT THING! I just gave it to my friend. I was going to give it to Goodwill but he said he'd take it.

The damn thing had not 1, not 2, but 3 different filters that have to be clean or the stupid thing stops working. That is THE WORST THING I EVER BOUGHT! And I was one of the people that bought a Coleco Adam computer.

4. Went to the vacuum store, which I should have done first, and found that they still make good ole American made Electrolux vacuums. Which I love! I bought one for $1500 Canadian

I love that machine but I wear earplugs when using it. The ything is insanely loud but it gets the job done.

Thanks.

I know you are (sort of) joking, but the reality is that France was never able to reap the benefits of the wealth that it generated, because so much of it was and is wasted on social programs and government-driven infrastructure.

I loved their TGV system. Amazing stuff being able to travel that way.

74 I hate coercion in any form. We had to get a new computer because none of our current machines can upgrade to Windows 11 even though they work fine and TurboTax and other platforms are discontinuing, very soon, software that will run on the older systems. It's not the cost, that is annoying but not a problem, it's the our way or F off attitude. And the new computer is loaded with a gazzillion apps and features I don't want or need or will ever use.

My use of a telephone consists of phone calls and texts. I don't watch movies, play games, read books or listen to music on it. Even the texts I send are usually just a word or two. Longer messages? That's what email or letters are for. My needs could be handled with a landline and an answering machine. Try finding such a simple device. They exist but are hard to find.

Rechargeable batteries in every damn device? With a few exceptions I prefer to use AA or AAA batteries, cheap and easy to replace. And they don't start fires.

The curmudgeon is strong with me this week.

ABC is very excited to announce that college Republicans are bending over and waiting to be killed.

—-

Some college chapters of the Democratic and Republican parties are trying to turn down the temperature on discourse surrounding Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk's assassination, as several groups across the country issued joint statements condemning the attack and calling for non-violence.

One of the first examples came from Rhode Island, where the Rhode Island Young Republicans and Rhode Island Young Democrats issued a rare joint statement on Wednesday evening.

“We may disagree on policy, but we are united in our belief in the value of life, civil discourse, and mutual respect," said Ken Naylor, chairman of the Young Republicans. Anthony Cherry, vice president of the Young Democrats, added that young leaders must "make political nonviolence our pledge," warning that "when our dialogue becomes toxic it has unimaginable consequences."

Even now some (maybe most?) Republicans don’t get it. They never will I guess.

Vacuums are insanely over-priced for what they are. A "fair" price for a good one should be about $150. And Electrolux was originally a Swedish company.

Check out Filter Queen. They use a large conical filter than looks like a giant Melitta coffee filter. And if you take the machine outside to dump the crud, you can shake the filter out, and reuse it many times.

Another FWP is photo loss. Printed pictures don't get lost unless fire or intentional destruction.

All this digital stuff. Phones and computers die. I lost my Microsoft account. TikTok deleted all the content without warning from younger users. Too much stuff can happen.

If you're savvy you can put it on a stick and boot to or from it without disrupting what is on your machine.

My late father was 90 and had a math square computer game he loved.

And I'd sometimes wake up at 5am, check the computer room and he'd be asleep in the chair with stuff from WebMD printed out on the printer.

I was impressed.
And blessed.

Mom and Dad had a Kenmore washing machine. They had it in the basement next to the shower head and Pittsburgh potty. the lower body of the machine rusted so thoroughly that Dad had to build a wooden frame to support the mechanical pieces parts. The thing would just not die.

My in-laws (the parents of the late Mrs. Borgia) bought a Kenmore washer when they first bought their house, back around 1970 or so. That thing lasted over 40 years. The replacement lasted 7 years. The replacement for that lasted 2 years. We'll see how long the one they have now lasts.

186 Good afternoon, Mike,
Exactly. Our use for a computer is minimal by today's standards. No games, no QR codes, we don't write and compile code, don't stream anything except YT videos and I'm persnickety about those videos, don't follow news on it. (I have yet to find a news source better or more timely than what is on AOSHQ.) I don't want to 'tweak' this feature or that add on. I want to open the box, read the INCLUDED set up directions, start using the machine and not have to disable a thousand things already on the machine that I will never use. We can't be the only ones who want or need a basic device.

You may not know it, but you are the target market for user-friendly Linux distros like Mint, which I am using right this very minute. Comes with a full suite of programs that emulate MS Office, and includes a browser, and audio and video players. Most printers are natively supported, too. And you cannot beat the price, free. If you run a Windows machine, you can run a PC using Mint OS. And about the only time you need to run the "dreaded" Terminal command line box is to install new software, and then you just cut and paste.

Darn it, I keep getting dragged in.

I'm kind of doing that now. Mom passed, after horrible family stuff the house became mine.

And after 2.5 months, I've finally almost completely cleaned everything. I got rid of TONS of stuff.

Some things you will protect with your life. Keep those. Things you have to dust or upkeep - pitch. Haven't touched it in years and will never use it - gone. Things that are older and kind of shabby - get rid of. Mom had tons of Christmas stuff she LOVED but a lot of it was shabby so I got rid of it.

There were a lot of tough choices. I'm not downsizing and it's a large house for one person. It's also not a museum. I have kept a lot of Mom's stuff. I have more angels than a straight man should.

1. Precious to you. 2. Will be displayed or used. And you go from there.
