Never sold produce at a farmer's market. I shop at two in my area (one on Saturday, one on Wednesday). I, have, however taken a couple bushels of wonderful Beefsteak tomatoes to a local favorite Tavern/restaurant of mine that I frequent at least once a week and donated them. It was much appreciated.
On a separate note, in my region, I'm amazed how late things are coming in this year. We had a very cold spring, and a mild summer. As a result, the field corn (and sweet corn for that matter) is late. Field corn is usually fully developed by now and they just have to wait on the stalks to brown and dry. This year, the tassels aren't even fully out yet. But, man, they look super hardy this year. Posted by: Orson at September 13, 2025 01:31 PM (dIske) 3

The HGTV thing isn't much of an exaggeration. While stuck in a waiting room some years ago I saw a few minutes of this show. The wife resold things on eBay. Husband was a part-time freelance writer or something. Their budget was like 7 or 8 hundred thousand dollars. What the actual fuck?

I have several statues in my yard. My late mother liked them. I took pictures to send in one day.
Now that the house is finally mine, I did buy 2 concrete monkey statues on 2 pedestals. I'm bringing one into the house. I'm on a corner lot. The plan is for the other monkey, black eating a yellow banana, to be placed by the corner where we have several small bushes and a huge rock. I think it'll look great there and make people smile. Little kids will love it. The plan is to have my friend cement in the 80 pound pedestal and glue the 175 monkey to the base. I'm a little worried about vandalism but we're in a quiet neighbourhood in a very small farming community. Older community. Alcohol places close early. And I can put a camera on him. That's the plan. We have a dog on the porch and one Halloween a girl told me she'd come up after school and give him a hug. Monkey could go on the porch. But he'd look very cool on the corner by the rock and bushes. Like Skip, our cukes won't quit. Vines look bedraggled- like they wouldn't even support life, and yet we'll get 6 to 8 cukes every other day. Gonna plant half next year. Getting tired of begging people to take them.
Tomatoes are still going. Peppers are doing great. 2 paprikas, poblanos, green chili, jalapenos, and a "lunch box" pepper. We can't seem to grow sweet red peppers... go figger. Watered the garden last Sunday, and then we spent most the week at hospital. Zukes became weaponry. Posted by: MkY at September 13, 2025 01:43 PM (cPGH3) 8
Thought I would give a bit of a review on figs. I have two Fignomenal plants (these are designed to grow in pots). One bought last year and one this year. I also have a Chicago Hardy, bought last year and planted in a pot. All three look good and the grasshoppers don't touch them. I saw a video from someone that grows figs in pots. He prefers to grow standard varieties as he says they are more vigorous. The two plants from last year are about the same size. Will be interesting to see if I can get them through the winter. I am really happy with them and might even buy another fig next year.

I love Farmers' Markets and shopped the one in my old hometown at least once a week. I bought tomatoes from sisters who started selling them when they were about 10 years old for spending money and to save for college. Their mom was rightfully proud of them. When I moved, I think they were in high school. All grown, graduated and with families of their own, no doubt, and probably still gardening.

As for garden stuff, it suffered from me dealing with health issues. A transplanted tomato finally took off and I might get a tomato or two if the weather holds. I got a summer squash plant from the store, supposed to be a crookneck. It has produced but they are the weirdest squash I've seen. The filet beans did poorly. The other beans have grown wel but no beans. Most of what I have are berry bushes, which look good and asparagus. If I can put together my cold frame, I should be in better shape for next year.

It is the end of the gravenstein apple season, and we are in the middle of my plum tree dropping fruit. So far I have canned 17 pints of plums, and I have dried about 3 gallon jugs full of dried prunes. I still have gobs of fruit on that tree.
After lots of research I think it is a Peshore yellow egg, and I suggest everyone have one. My tomato trellises are not doing well, and after trying to get them to work for me for 5 years I am going back to cages. A lot of people think trellises are the best, and I congratulate them on their success. I have made a fair amount of tomatoes, canned, cooked down for sauce, and as tradition dictates, when we got that downpour, I picked all the ones that split and froze them. so far I have made plum cobbler, plum tarts, plum pie, and this morning I made plum tartlets. Tarts are plums arranged in one or two layers on a puff pastry crust, dabbed with butter, and covered with plum jam for baking. The recipe calls for topping it with crushed almonds or other fruits, but I consider that to be gilding the lily Posted by: Kindltot at September 13, 2025 01:48 PM (rbvCR) 13

The HGTV gag puts me in mind of a certain type of story that used to appear in Forbes magazine all the time, a sort of faux rags-to-riches theme. The story would center on somebody with an interesting idea who made it a success. I'd start reading, and get interested in how the person got the project off the ground, and, inevitably, the author dropped this little nugget into the storyline: "And so Susie Glotz borrowed $2 million from friends and relatives..."

Beautiful produce!
This year was just crazy bad for produce. Early heat followed by a blistering dry July. Almost everything quit, except the okra. Then a ton of rain in August. Some years are like that. I was able to can 7 quarts of Contender beans, and we got some peas and squash, nothing impressive. Our big achievement was peaches. Canned a bunch of those, and made jam with a low sugar recipe that's out of this world! Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at September 13, 2025 02:25 PM (w6EFb) 29

I've traded gardening and fruit trees for a, might as well be, pet deer. Almost as good as a goat. Fires chased them into the valley a few years ago and they never left. There was a herd of about 60 or so at one point.
Last week she was feeding on pears dropped on the ground from my tree. She finishes the ones on the ground and grabs the tree and shakes it. Several fall. She looks at the haul and walks off. I think she's ripening them. There isn't much left anywhere that a deer can reach. My roses are stripped. All trees leafless up to about 6'. I've mostly given up trying to grow anything. It's a good thing she looks yummy. Might need that protein someday. Posted by: Reforger at September 13, 2025 02:27 PM (SPOEc) 31

When my wife and I were selling our last home, we had a buyer that obviously binge watched HGTV and thought he could get us to go lower than we wanted. He tried saying "Well, there are other townhomes in the area that are cheaper." My response: "Our home is newer, it's an end unit and there are woods in the back instead of other houses." When HGTV began in the 90s they had shows that actually involved home and gardens. (GASP!) Simple, practical home repairs, all levels of gardening, and even a show about backyard bird watching. It was pleasant and informative. Then it morphed into this 'lifestyles of those who want to seem rich' crap that has nothing to do reality. All pretention, no substance.

I am going to look at new digs Monday. I'm a little nervous, going to a senior place but here's the deal. Step one is just like renting anywhere but just being surrounded by contemporaries. Nothing to do with Medicare, income, etc. In fact, the nice lady brought up rent. A little high (actually pretty high) but giving all sorts of amenities and keeping out the riff raff (don't know if I'll make the cut). In addition to the real nice grounds, provision is there for elevated gardening, which I have looked into. Some 'maters and peppers and even some broccoli would entertain me.

We have a lot of pictures of round hay bales in fields or in rows, trees growing out of silo tops, and my favorite, a long line of silo corn all brown in the field with the top of the north Kansas River Valley ridge line peeking over the top. He uses a pantographic technique, for pictures up to 270 degrees and 40 megs. He turns the mundane into art. Posted by: NaCly Dog at September 13, 2025 03:36 PM (u82oZ) 72
I meant a 6 pack of feeders, not hummingbirds, LOL!

We have a red-chested one we call Fat Albert. He's as wide as he is tall. A few green ones, one with a black band around it's neck, and another lighter red chested one. The rest of them kinda blend together.
Posted by: jsg at September 13, 2025 03:31 PM (7Kd+r) Sounds like you're loaded with hummingbirds! I've never seen more than 4 at one time. 70 67 69 When living in Erie I did some work on the attic for the old Polish landlady. A very hot day, and coming down I was covered in dust. She insisted I cool off in the backyard, sitting in a glider with a couple cans of Piva. Hummingbirds were coming in for her flowers, especially those looking like small lillie's (I don't know flowers). Those little birdies will mesmerize you.
