As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Jumping Atomic Anniversary Shitballs! Seven years! For something that was supposed to last a few weeks, a full seven years sure did go by quickly! I want to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you for hanging out here with me for all these years. All y'all are the best. I am often thanked for doing this thread, and although I appreciate the sentiment, the truth is I'm not really doing much at all. Those who know me understand this is just my normal bullshit, and at best all I'm really doing is starting a conversation. Where the magic happens is in the comments where all of you guys and gals get busy every week. You're the ones who have made this a happy and fun little corner of the internet for shooting enthusiasts. Without you, I'm just talking to myself. Thanks!

They Mome'n down in Texas!

With September, the time has come to begin the discussion of the upcoming TXMoMe in Corsicana, TX on October 17-18. This is the TENTH annual TXMoMe, or Conservative Burning Man as it's popularly known, and it promises to be a doozy. If you're in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere of the Planet of the Earth, contact Ben Had for details on attending. The dates and email links for all MoMes are always helpfully included on the blog's main page, left sidebar.

What started years ago as a small get-together and informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full scale jamboree-hootenanny including a program of shooting activities for both handguns and rifles over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for making this whole thing happen and providing the opportunity for the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the event. But wait! There's more! Combine that with world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons, and you have a weekend that legends are made of.

For those not inclined to shoot (?), there are non-stop opportunities to relax in the shade of the carport or under a handy nearby tree with a beverage and visit with your online pals to your hearts content, which is really what the whole damn thing is about in the first place.. Specifics of the Friday/Saturday schedule of activities will be posted here in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Allow me to be serious for a minute. I have said this probably two hundred and fifty-seven times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who expresses regret after having attended one. Actually it goes beyond that. It's not just a weekend of laughs, it's an opportunity to connect with lots of like-minded people and create lasting friendships and priceless memories. No kidding. Think that's hyperbole? It snot. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? Well, yes he would, but not about this. TXMoMe veterans will attest to the funness and completely laid-back nature of the event. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get yo' ass to Texas!

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Aladino Cameroon.

Cameroon leaf gets its name from the west African country where tobacco originally brought from Indonesia flourished, and produces a distinctive kind of flavor profile for cigar making. JRE Tobacco, maker of Aladino cigars, has used Cameroon seed to grow tobacco in Honduras, and the result is pleasing. I tried the robusto (5 X 52). Handsome medium brown wrapper with a hint of red to it. "Toothy" Cameroon wrapper leaf, meaning rustic looking with veins and a slightly rough appearance. Under the wrapper are Honduran corojo binder and fillers. A medium cigar, with ample smoke - one of the two I tried required some burn management. Draw was easy. Interesting flavor profile. Notes of something like mint or pine, producing a faintly sweet element atop a mellow tobacco base flavor. All the notes were subtle, so a smooth overall impression. Different than you'll get from an Oliva Serie G with its African Cameroon wrapper (and Nicaraguan fillers), but very pleasant. The Aladino Cameroon is available online for $9 and up.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

12 Looking forward to the Texas MOME - I have been to the last 3 in Texas and they are fun and it is great to meet like minded people and to also shoot guns. I got to shoot Weasel pal Jeff's auto Uzi a couple of years ago and that was awesome. I had never shot an auto of any kind before. If you haven't been you need to go. Took the tricked out Pointman 7 and put another 50 rounds through. I’m getting it dialed in. Or, it’s getting ME dialed in. Many rounds went through the same hole.

Weasel, I have my orange hat and if I keep making progress should be able to help out. i am already back on the cane and can actually walk a little without it, so optimistic I will be ready.

On another topic, does it seem like the Sig P320 thing just fell off the radar after that arrest related to the airman's death? I know there are still lawsuits in progress but it feels like everybody has stopped talking about it.

And you will not be hearing from me for the next 2 Sundays as I will be across the pond and will most likely be sleeping. ;-)

I am also in a quandary as I have not received my pistol license and rifle permit from NYC yet. I had started the renewal process back near the end of May and was told it would be easily 18-20 weeks to process my renewals.
So I am reticent to take my firearms out of my home

32 Did go to the range yesterday. Brought my PPQ 45 and my Canik TP9SF. Also the church gun because I wanted to see if I could operate it with my work gloves, as I also wear it while working in the yard.

Church gun works fine with work gloves, trigger guard on the PSA Microdagger is big enough.

PPQ 45 is very snappy, and is about the same size as the PPQ 9mm interestingly enough.

Canik TP 9SF is a good gun, good trigger, very good for the price especially. I think I got mine for $300

There I was, ready to light up the plate rack @ 500 yards, I solidly missed everything. Something I'd easily tagged down to the 4 inch square the two previous trips with both my rifles. Sigh.

Then, we shifted to the 1,000 yard rack, 12" 10" and 3" plate. I hit the 12" and 10" within 3 shots, and, in fact, centered up the 10". The 3" plate laughed at me.

On to the silhouette shoot, varied distances and locations. Spin for shoot order, 12 shots, 6 targets. Unlike previous times out, I did well enough to get back in contention but fell just a bit short, I was especially pleased to hit the coyote silhouette @ 957 yards. Finally got the dope on the rifle straightened out.

Baby steps. Oh yeah, after we were done, I casually lit up the plate rack with the 66.5-06. Nerves really got the better of me on the 500 yard rack.

Sadly I haven't' been to the range in a long time. But I am working with a gal from China (I know, but she seems pretty based, at least as based as she can be) and she wants to go shooting. So that should get me off my butt and to the range. I'll have to figure out what to bring.

36 My first TX MoMe was 3 years ago. I figured if I didn't make an effort to go then I might never get another chance. I just got in the car and drove all the way there in one shot. Stayed in a motel where there was a fiesta in the parking lot every night. Had a great time.

I wised up and drove the RV the next year. That is the way to do it. Thank you so much to our hosts for allowing us to camp, free of charge.

I missed last year but am prepping for the 16 hr drive in October. This is gonna be great!

The best thing is meeting and re-meeting the people behind the nics. They are actual real people! No bots in this crowd.

37 My range trip this weekend involved taking the 4" barreled Colt Kodiak to the range and zeroing it. I used .44 Specials for zeroing before I tried out .44 Magnum. .44 Specials are relatively mild out of this beast. The second generation Anacondas have the same trigger mechanism as the second generation Pythons. It's a very noticeable difference. The Hogue "Gripper" rubber grips do a very good job helping absorb the recoil, especially with .44 Magnums. I can't say if the porting job helped keep the recoil down or not. I shot a total of 30 rounds of .44 Special and 10 rounds of .44 Magnum (all I had). First impression: This is a nice revolver, but it's definitely not for everyone. The 4" barrel makes a good carry gun for bear country if that's your thing.

Took the RMBS Mom to the range yesterday for TXMOME prep. Coincidentally enough, I was trying to correct her low/left shooting. She's working on the issue, and making great progress. Her groups are tightening up and getting more centered. She'll be ready for TX.

Me, I'm working on grip fundamentals. It's coming slowly, but surely.

I have a whole new outlook on crippled people. About 10 days ago, WeaselWoman was on her evening walk, tripped over an uneven sidewalk, and fractured her tibia. She's hobbling around on crutches, and somehow now I'm in the caregiver business. I tried to tell her that I'm retired and cannot be made to do things but it doesn't seem to be working.

For any lurking "Ettes who have not experienced the absolute crazy, wonderful, delightful event that is the Texas MoMe, you need to be there. I went to the VA MoMe in August 2020 and found myself in Texas two months later and have not regretted a single moment. where else can you talk to like minded people, eat gourmet meals and get to shoot an wide array of firearms with expert marksmen/women. No previous experience required, just a willingness to learn. The fun never ends.

The USAF authorized their M18s to get issued again. Their investigation failed to turn up any clear indication of systemic failures in the platform. That's why this has fallen off the radar. I learned that as of next season THE Ohio State University will have NCAA Rifle as a women-only sport. One retired college coach told me he's pretty certain that it is NCAA's intention to convert all collegiate rifle to female-only. There is a "statistical need" for more sports for women to suit-up in, to balance football and basketball roster counts. Looking at the pattern of "lost programs," it's not hard to be suspicious there are other motivations at work as well.

94 I took (and passed) the CCW class a couple of weeks ago. I haven't submitted my application for my permit yet for a couple of reasons. Foremost is that the class was a waste of a Saturday. We learned virtually nothing in the class. I expected to leave the class with my head swimming in an ocean of legal dos and don'ts. Nope.

So, anyway, I've been scouring the innerwebs to try to get a working knowledge of the legal requirements and restrictions that come with carrying a concealed firearm.

It's really sad and a bit troublesome to see how green several of the people were who passed the class. One of the things that left an impression right off the bat was the instructor began the class by asking if anyone was carrying in the class. Almost half the class were and the majority of those were being carried loose in a purse. Yikes. There was a sign on the door of the building saying no concealed weapons allowed. Those people should have automatically failed the class and been ejected.

Go ahead and file the paperwork. Nothing says you have to start carrying once you have the card in hand so you are free to continue your self-education. Thanks for seven years of GT. As well as the rest of you, from whom I try to learn every week. This is a great group. I had hoped to make the MoMe this year, but alas it is not to be.
Perhaps a mini-MoMe if there is a MN group interested....

Brief range report: Took the adopted daughter to the local range. They just opened, so it was a new experience for me too. The range is nice and clean, and no more expensive than any indoor range around here (Great White North).

She has not been shooting for several years (6-8 or so). She's small and didn't like the LCPII or the Airweight in 38. According to her, the recoil was pretty stiff on both of those.

Fortunately, I also brought the 5.7 Rock from PSA which seemed to suit her fine. She put at least 100 rounds through it. Many of them were low / left but she did manage to keep them on the paper so that was an accomplishment.

Go start with Andrew Branca and his The Law Of Self Defense. It's a great (and pretty small) book on the 5 common elements of a self-defense incident. Then I would check out USCCA's concealed carry map, which gives a lot of info on each state, in terms of basic laws.

The Armed Attorneys are a good set of folks to listen to (and are sometimes featured here), though some of their information is limited to Texas (where they practice).

Anywhere that holds a concealed carry class where no concealed firearms are allowed is either in an anti-gun state or locale, or is kind of dim. IMHO

The ammo is as inexpensive as possible and available anywhere. A Heritage Rough Rider revolver with 6.5 inch barrel can be had for about 120.00 at Cabela's. The fundamentals learned shooting it will apply to all future shooting.

As a 2nd choice dark horse, I'll suggest the Colt Officers' Model. This was Colt's premier medium fram target revolver from the early 1900s through 1969. As a target revolver for competition, these had very smooth trigger actions. The single action on these revolvers (if not worn down too much) is just as good as the far better known Colt Python, the Officers Model's eventual replacement. Available in .22 LR and .38 Special, the Officers' Model has been overshadowed by the Python in the collectors' market for decades. It's possible to find a vintage Officers' Model for significantly less than that of a vintage Colt Python, or even a current one.

The accurate method for measuring case wall thickness is with a ball micrometer, not the calipers shown. On the other hand, if you don't have a ball micrometer handy, calipers can at least indicate that some case walls are thicker than others.

Anything besides 7 1/2, 8 and 9 are specialty orders. I made shot for 3 years and compared to what we shipped in those three the rest were 100 to 1. We almost never made 7's intentionally. We could catch enough over 7.5 pours to keep up with demand. We would do a lot of 4's and get 3's and 5's out of those. A 6 pour would yeald 5's and 7's also. We shipped somewhere over 800,000 pounds a month.
I really miss doing it. A friend owns the tower now so someday I'll climb it again.

198 Toughest part about loading .32 ACP is everything is so tiny. Bullets and cases are hard to grasp, powder charges are so small that they are hard to measure.

It's SA/DA. It's on the same frame as the Official Police and Python, which is why the Python ended up replacing it in the Colt lineup. Officers' Models just didn't have the same "look" that the Python did. That's a reason why they've become forgotten over the last five decades.

204 So, shooting. Yesterday did the action handgun match, and it was bad for several different reasons.

I've had this new, mysterious problem with the 1911 dating back about 3 months. Springfield MilSpec, no mods or trickery, everything stock. Standard load I've been shooting since I got it, almost 10 years ago - 200g Missouri Bullet SWC, with mumble-mumble grains of HP38 (middle range of the loading data number).

Anyway I now get these really, really hard jams - bullet lodged up against the top of the ramp, so hard it takes tools to clear it. WT heck? Anyway, going to replace the springs in my Wilson mags, and switch to my 9mm semi for the matches (I operate/reload it faster anyway).

Other frustration is, due to number of shooters, they've adopted a "par time" for every stage (under a minute). Yesterday I failed to finish 4 stages - in all the years doing this match, probably failed fewer than 4, before this. Kind of boring to spend half+ of your day, not even finish most of the stages, shoot maybe 130 rounds total. Even with the new par time, match took 1 hour longer than the norm going back years.

226 Speaking of small slender fingers, Mrs. E shot the Tisas Commander size Stingray like a professional. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was (lightweight carry) to get back on target. For the money it was steady with nary a burp. I like it a lot.

227 Shot sizes explained.

Rule is 8's are 9, 9's are 8.
So 8 shot is .090 and 9's are .080.
Every size jump is .010. 7.5 being .095.
7's are .100 rare.
6's are .110 rare. Really hard to pour.
5's are .120 rare. Above here requires cold weather.
4's are .130 and require really, really cold weather. Pours go really fast and on our system were almost impossible to keep up with.
Made 2's once. -10f outside and I got about 2 hours of pour. 8 tons out of 20 as good shot. I still have 50#'s of it here 25 years later. One avid reloader traded me a shotgun shell reloading outfit for 50#'s of it once.

A while back one of the big ammo sellers had Winchester 12 gauge #2 game loads for sale. They claimed they were made for export to Australia for shooting bats. Checking the site now, the only #2 loads they have are marketed for home defense.

Not so much on the gun front. We were in Florida at the beginning of the week. Hammer knife flail mowing to be sure. That thing sounds so medieval.

At any rate Florida has exempted Second Amendment items from sales tax for the rest of the year.

Unfortunately our farm is in a small town and few places to buy ammo and they are not great prices. Need to get back there some time before the end of the year.

I don't know premium from shinola, but I can suggest Bear Creak Arms, Faxon, and Rainier as barrel providers. Faxon and Rainier have higher prices and fall into the more "premier" category, I think.

I would love to find out. I think any buck and most 2's are probably cast. So there is a heavy side to the shot. Dropping it removes gravity from the equation and allows for perfectly round shot. Flys straighter. We were limited by tower height and outside temprature to what we could make.
I did read an article in a shot mag that described a 350 foot cliff in Arkansas or somewhere where the confederates were dropping .50 musket balls into the river below. Knowing what I know I think they probably made a huge heavy mess and a few balls.

258 Evening, Gun Thread folkses!. No gun-related news to report, but I have almost completely cleared my yuuuge outdoor work table. Last task was to weld a broken leg on a C. H. Ina and Co. patio chair. Aluminum, so I had to drag out my TIG welder, and learn to use it. Bad words were uttered. But I got 'er done, and went on to build a nifty cart to tote the TIG machine. Now that it's more accessible, I will use it more.

I'm going to have a raccoon-style suntan on my face...

They have a couple of Faxon's, which seem to have a good reputation, and some Brownell-brand barrels. No idea who makes those.

I already have a no-name barrel, which doesn't shoot as good as I'd like, so I'm a "Buy once, cry once" state of mind when it comes to buying something. I'm willing to pay up to shoot smaller.

Thanks for the recommendation. As far as not being allowed to have a firearm in the class, it was held in the sheriff's department complex, so I can understand that. The range for the shooting portion was about two miles away.

I'm fighting false accusations of stolen valor, trying to get a retraction. And unfortunately they've had a death in the family (i think). The stigma of stolen valor tortures me and I'm very angry, but I'm not an animal - I should stand down, right? But for how long? 3 months? 6 months? What would be proper in a situation like this?
