  • Of all the AMD Strix Halo mini-PCs that have been announced recently the Minisforum MS-S1 Max looks to be the most compelling. (Liliputing)

Well perhaps looks isn't the right term since it is an unremarkable small form-factor workstation you might find in any office, right until you check the specs.

It has four USB-C ports (two USB4v2 at 80Gbps, and two USB4 at 40Gbps), five USB-A ports, HDMI, two audio jacks at front and rear, and two 10Gb Ethernet ports - RJ-45 too, so no fiddling about here. Plus it has a PCIe slot, albeit limited to half-height half-length cards, though my QNAP 4-slot M.2 adaptor should fit. And and internal 320W power supply so you don't need to worry about a chunky external brick.

M.2 storage not mentioned in the article but presumably present. Memory is the standard quad-channel LPDDR5X providing up to 128GB of soldered RAM at 8000MHz.

As a reminder, this chip has 16 Zen 5 CPU cores paired with 40 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores, giving it a very fast CPU and the fastest integrated GPU of any PC.

  • Speaking of QNAP and 10GBase-T QNAP has a new 10Gb Ethernet switch - 16 ports, available on Amazon for $599. (Serve the Home)

8 10GBase-T ports and 8 SFP+ ports, and it supports 2.5Gb and 5Gb speeds. It's managed or you can save $50 and buy the unmanaged version though I don't really know why you would do that. Except probably not even QNAP can load a security flaw into an unmanaged switch.

  • Warner Bros has filed suit against AI image generation company Midjourney after discovering to its shock that artists - including AI "artists" - can draw pictures of things they have seen. (WCCFTech)

In this case, of Warner Bros characters.

    But that is legal.

You can learn how to draw Superman.

    You can draw Superman.

What you cannot legally do is distribute your artwork of Superman.

    Which Midjourney didn't do.

Hoping this case reaches a sensible conclusion.

46 I can remember a time in my life when her song At Seventeen would make me want to shoot my radio. Never understood why it made it into the Top 40 rotations.

I've been listening to cleaned-up American Top 40 broadcasts on I Heart Radio the last few years. They run shows from July 1970 to some time in 1988.

A few random things I have noted:

* Casey Kasem pushed wokeness as hard as the then-current climate would allow

* Casey Kasem had a fascination for trannies--you could hear the excitement in his voice whenever talking about cross dressers like Boy George or Sylvester (disco artist/female impersonator in the late 1970s)

* Social Justice topics and themes turned the Top 40 into damned near wall-to-wall Janis Ian wannabes by 1985

* A ridiculously high share of top hit songs celebrate or excuse marital infidelity

78 "WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Sept. 5 ordered his administration to rename the Department of Defense the "Department of War," bringing back a Cabinet name abandoned in 1947 to match what White House officials call a new "warrior ethos" it is instilling in the armed forces.

Trump signed an executive order making the Department of War a new "secondary name" for the Defense Department.

The move empowers Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use titles such as "Department of War," "Secretary of War" and "Deputy Secretary of War" in official government correspondence and communications without formally changing the department's name, which would require action from Congress." 94 VicJ, for some reason I have had spiders around my cars in the last few years. When I was driving the big Park Avenue a while back a big pale spider swung down in front of my face. It's a wonder I didn't crash. I managed to grab the thing and fling it out of the window, which fortunately was open.

I still see small ones on the outside of my current car. Must be from the trees where I park.

Matthew 24:6 (King James Version):

A name change like this might just cause more than a few rumours. Hmmm...

Spectacular scenery down inside there. I've always wanted to go back during a summer evening and sit with a group to watch the bats fly out for their night's hunting of insects.

MinisForum probably have their own custom ITX size board in there.

In the stand alone boards they sell there is a massive heatpipe with fins and a single 120mm fan on top to cool the APU, also lots of heat sink fins over the VRMs.

These are laptop chips so they are easier to cool, especially if they’re only using a 320W power supply.

And I think they use Liquid Metal instead of paste on the chip, which you can’t really remove from the board anyhow.

111 That box is MinisForum competing with the Framework Desktop with the same Ryzen Max chips inside.

I’ve seen the reviews for Framework’s version and I’m pretty sure MinisForum has them beat on I/O.

Framework has a cool little box and replaceable parts but this MinisForum looks loaded with extras.

I bet it has at least two M.2 slots.
One on front of the MB, and one on the back,
They might’ve been able to fit a third slot somewhere else.

That little PC probably cost $1500+, though.

113 @107/SpeakingOf: Ran into this video about Liquid Metal the other day, and it made me reconsider whether I wanted to use it on an older Intel I7 3750K that I have:

https://youtu.be/_sizf1dNHfQ

The short version: (Jump ahead to 4:08 to see the first important part of this video) Too much liquid metal was placed on the CPU in this Dell Alienware laptop, and it escaped the dam that is placed around the CPU die (intended to hold in the liquid metal and stop it from escaping to other areas of the laptop where it can short out, well... everything.)

I was considering de-lidding my I7-3770k to fix the heat issues it's having because Intel, in their infinite stupidity, didn't solder the IHS (integrated heat spreader) to the CPU die like they had in past, but went with simple thermal paste, which dries out over time.

I'm still going to do this, but instead of liquid metal, I think I'm going to use a high efficiency non-conductive thermal paste between the CPU die and the IHS, and also from the IHS's top to the heatsink of the CPU cooler.

I'd even bought a tube of liquid metal, but I wondered about the conductivity problem. I'm glad I waited and didn't just barge ahead boldly.

Yeah, that’s Dell/Alienware for you.
They charge a lot for often shoddy products.

I have never messed with Liquid Metal, and don’t plan to. I’m not that precise or steady with my hands and I guarantee you I’d leave a very difficult to clean mess behind.

I’ll stick with paste or pads for now on the few times I have to install a CPU.

129 Coming back to this thread with an afterthought:

Of all the AMD Strix Halo mini-PCs that have been announced recently the Minisforum MS-S1 Max looks to be the most compelling.

I went to the Minisforum site, and saw this statement:

At IFA 2025, Minisforum will officially introduce its next-gen AI product lineup, set to redefine the future of AI computing: AI Mini PC X1 PRO, AI NAS N5 PRO, and AI Workstation MS S1 Max.

Seeing "AI" associated with anything immediately fills me with doubts about its efficacy, accuracy, and reliability.

I can't be the only potential customer who has this reaction.
