  • Wikipedia is resilient because it is boring. (The Verge)

    Except it's not.

We could better write this headline as Wikipedia is resilient only to the extent that it is boring because the moment something catches the attention of the politically motivated* they will burn it to the ground in a self-righteous frenzy.

The article goes on at length not to discuss resilience but dysfunction at every level of the organisation.

But it all comes down to one thing: At Wikipedia, Truth is controlled by the True Believers, and the safest bet for factual accuracy is political irrelevance.

    * And yes, I mean communists.

  • Tech Note: Due to the archive sites I was using for sites that block adblockers instituting a "human identification" layer, I'm switching to recommending Brave in its place. It so far seems to cut neatly through the crap.

Also has an actual terminal. So I could download and install a Linux distro when I get tired of chrome as my browser.

33 I read some new poetry last night. Reading to an audience has an uncanny ability to tug on that one or two loose threads in the writing and performance that was never noticed until you have 50 pairs of eyeballs staring at you. It can also reveal when you are not the only one thinks a piece is rock solid. It is a useful exercise I have found.

The downside is I had to hear about the big upcoming show of their collected anti-Trump protest posters at some gallery down the street, suggesting I wouldn't be attending but it sure did sound "interesting", RESISTENCE in general, gaze at Gaza genocide buttons (Ukraine has been dumped down the memory hole it seems), and endure written pieces about this is the first day of the rest of your life, more or less, contrived rhymes, mumbling monotone readings, and from a one how it is that Trump is approximately Hitler. I came away thinking the number of loose threads they left on the floor was uncountable.

There are reasons why only do this a couple times a year anymore.

42 Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ late toilers and early risers. It's Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished! What do you have planned for this evening and the weekend?

I dreamed some confusing scenario about being late to work after being out sick for a few days. My start time was apparently the evening shift, because the time was something like five p.m. The first thing I had to do was supervise my co-workers as they put out, as in extinguished, a stripe of fire (yes, actual fire) along the floor in the hallway and office. One of my team was a cute brunette girl in jeans and a white jersey who looked like . . . well, I won't say which "adult" star she resembled, but it was strange to see her there.

Melatonin, I sing thy praises!

43 And I'm awake earlier than I planned because the furry thugs decided to play "Keep, Keep Away" across the bed, and me. Damn felines.

I knew I didn't want two of them and I knew I didn't want kittens; a single older cat would have been perfect. Somehow I got seduced into adopting two five-month-olds. That was three years ago, so they are *still* healthy energetic little monsters.

I read widely and sometimes deeply. When the material presented is interesting, I follow along. When the material is not interesting, I quit reading and move on. This practice evolved long ago and I have found little reason to change my actions.

53 I spent part of yesterday morning and evening updating two PC laptops. One is from 2020, the Win10 machine my office bought me (but which somehow never got recorded in inventory -- and it would be considered obsolete by now anyway). The other is a small model that was passed on to me by my first boss at my last job. It has an SSD instead of the older hard drive. Both got a careful scrub with the latest edition of CCleaner. Both got the latest version of Brave and had various apps removed from the startup routine. CCleaner does not need to run at startup, for example.

The newer machine thought the date was 11/08/23, and while it would run Brave, every site I visited before bringing the machine up to date would hit me with a security error, "This site is unsafe."

I'd prefer the newer machine, as it's faster, but the screen is smaller, so it's kind of a tossup. No, I did not update to Win11.

65 Until I was twelve, my mother -- who had grown up with cats and still had a portrait on a shelf of her favorite black cat, named after her brother -- couldn't get a cat or any larger pet. The lease forbade it, and she was sure the upstairs neighbors would squeal on us to the landlord. Once they moved and she checked out the new tenant, she adopted a cute orange shorthair kitten from a friend. He quickly became our buddy and the center of the household and taught me much about cats and their companionable qualities, which are enormous.

My 90-year-old dad has a PC running Windows 10, and he wants me to help him upgrade it to Windows 11. I . . . have no idea how to do that, as I have been a Mac girl for decades (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa).

I know I could look it up, but I am dense, or so I've been told, so I thought I would ask you guys. Once you stop laughing, can you tell me what to do? I honestly don't know whether it means I have to buy new software, etc.

Thank you!

I'm not anti-cat, I'm not anti-dog. I've had both. The things you don't notice as a constantly dirty kid is how much animals make your house smell, and how much they can tear a place up. I'm too tired and don't want to deal with that any more. If a single, I might have a cat. Dogs are too much work. The good thing about cats is you can go on a couple day trip and when you return the cat looks at you like: "You were gone? I didn't notice."

You could always get an HDMI cable and hook it up to a TV or buy a 24” monitor for it.

You can get a decent LCD 24” 1080p monitor from $80 to $150 these days on Amazon.

The higher priced models have higher refresh rates, over 100hz, for gaming. A normal monitor at 60Hz is cheaper and is all you’ll need, I imagine.

The price goes up with screen type (OLED, Mini-LED), screen size (27” to 35”, color gamut, and resolution (1440p or 2160p) after that.

For color, make sure a monitor has at least 100% of the sRGB color gamut to get a nice TV-like color and saturation experience. They’ll have that in the listing somewhere.

You can do it now. Make a paper list of all his contacts and that info.
Then make opportunity to access his phone and start filling up his contact list. Soon his contacts will be complete. If it's an iPhone you can put the contacts into the cloud in case he accidentally loses them. Then cut off all those other calls.

If he has Verizon, they have a free call filter that does this - you just have to turn it on. There are degrees of filtering you can adjust. I've found it to be extremely effective. I'm sure other services must have something similar.

Bought an automatic litter box at Wally's. They poop in the box, when they leave the box a rake automatically rakes the litter moving it to a container at the end of the litter box. The lid opens, poop goes in, lid shuts and rake goes back in place.
The cats like to watch it work.

"The White Sox came into Yankee Stadium in ’59 and I was pitching against them. I took my 8 warm up pitches, they played the National Anthem.

Up comes Louie Aparicio. First pitch I throw to him he bunts down third, beats it out. One pitch, man on first.
Nellie Fox gets up. First pitch, double down the left field line. Two pitches, second and third.

Minnie Minoso, I threw him a really good curveball, but it hit him in the kneecap. So he walks down to first.

Now I’ve thrown three pitches. Bases are loaded and up comes Ted Kluszewski…First pitch high fastball, off the right-centerfield wall. Three runs score. I’ve thrown four pitches.

Manager Casey Stengel comes out to the mound. Yogi doesn’t want to miss that, so he hustles out there.

And Casey says to Yogi, ‘Does Ford have anything tonight?’.
And Yogi says, ‘How the hell do I know? I haven’t caught a pitch yet.'"

Tech Note: Due to the archive sites I was using for sites that block adblockers instituting a "human identification" layer, I'm switching to recommending Brave in its place. It so far seems to cut neatly through the crap.

Pixy just means that because the archive sites he is using are putting up hurdles with browsers using ad-blockers, that you should use Brave browser to view those sites because Brave is getting through with out a lot of hassles or waiting on the “Bot Detectors” to do their thing, which sometimes doesn’t work and you’re just sitting there waiting while nothing is happening.

You can still setup a local account on Win11, it’s a series of terminal commands you have to enter at Setup to do it, but I did it that way when I installed on mine.

Problem was I found out later, Incouldnt do WiFi file sharing over a network unless the PC was logged in through a Microsoft account, so I had to do it anyhow.

There are probably ways to get around that, too, but I just gave up and let Microsoft back in to make it easier on myself.

The key to installing Win 11 without a Microsquat account is DO NOT connect to a network during the setup process. This will allow you to setup a local account. Once the local account is setup you can connect and do the updates and stuff.
