Saturday Night "Club ONT" September 6, 2025 [The 3 Ds]

20250904-stripes.jpg

Club ONT wants YOU!! Welcome to Club ONT! A collaboration the 3D's - The Disco, The Doggo, and The Dino. The Disco has been sailing the high seas. Either wearing a Dollar Store pirate hat and eye patch or a European sailor outfit. Enjoy your time at the Club tonight!

Did you know Club ONT has a time machine? It sits behind the popcorn machine (that is out of order). It looks suspiciously like an ATM machine but that's a clever ruse. If you feed the time machine just the right amount of restroom tokens and press the right buttons, it reaches back and resurrects culture from some random year of the past. We gave it a try and tonight it said 1981!! No idea why, but that's the random nature of time travel.

Top song of 1981 - Kim Carnes

Saturday Night Jokes and Other Funnies

The judge says to a double-homicide defendant, "You're charged with beating your wife to death with a hammer."

A voice at the back of the courtroom yells out, "You bastard!"

The judge says, "You're also charged with beating your mother-in-law to death with a hammer."

The voice in the back of the courtroom yells out, "You damned bastard!"

The judge stops, and says to the guy in the back of the courtroom, "Sir, I can understand your anger and frustration at this crime. But no more outbursts from you, or I'll charge you with contempt. Is that a problem?"

The guy in the back of the court stands up and says, "For fifteen years, I've lived next door to that bastard, and every time I asked to borrow a hammer, he said he didn't have one."

-----

I was walking through the cemetery that was rumored to be haunted. I met a groundskeeper there and asked him if the place was haunted. He said, "I've worked here 177 years, and haven't seen anything suspicious."

-----

When the officer walks up to the car, he sees the driver is an eighty-year-old woman with very thick glasses.

"Ma'am, why are you driving so slowly on the highway?" he asks.

"Why are you mad at me? The speed limit is only ten miles an hour!" she replies angrily, gesturing toward a nearby sign.

The officer looks at the sign and sighs. "Ma'am, that sign says 'Highway 10,' not 'Speed Limit 10'."

"Oh my goodness!" the driver exclaims, embarrassed. "I'm so sorry, officer! I'll look more carefully at the signs, I promise!"

The officer nods and glances casually into the backseat, and freezes. Sitting in the backseat are two other women, wide-eyed and pale, barely breathing, their white knuckles gripping the seat as hard as they can.

"Are your passengers alright?" he asks.

"Oh, they're fine," the driver replies. "We just got off Highway 180."

Club ONT Bartenders - Presidential Style

Abraham Lincoln was a licensed bartender?

In January 1833 in New Salem, Illinois, Lincoln partnered with his friend from his militia days, William F. Berry, to purchase a small store, which they named Berry and Lincoln. Stores could sell alcohol in quantities greater than a pint for off-premises consumption, but it was illegal to sell single drinks to consume at the store without a license. In March 1833, Berry and Lincoln were issued a tavern, or liquor, license, which cost them $7 and was taken out in Berry's name. Stores that sold liquor to consume on the premises were called groceries.

NFL is underway. The league once again sprained its spleen - another tiresome round of virtue signaling on the Thursday night broadcast.

What's good about the NFL? Glad you asked. Hot dogs. And it looks like the Atlanta Falcons got the pricing correct.

*****

Interesting pictures in the links.

Very cool geometry in nature - basalt columns. Inspiration for Mendelssonhn's Hebride/Fingal's Cave overture.

After seeing the cave in summer 1829, when he was 20 years old, he immediately started writing the overture and completed it the following year. He wrote, then and there, to his sister Fanny, “In order to make you understand how extraordinarily the Hebrides affected me, I send you the following, which came into my head there.” The note included the opening phrase of what would become the full overture.

Legend of Fingal's Cave

According to the legend, the two places are the opposite ends of an ancient bridge built by the benevolent Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill. While building the pathway towards Scotland, Fionn gets informed that his enemy Scottish giant Benandonner is coming to fight him. Fionn cannot withstand Benandonner’s strength, so he asks his wife Oona to help him. She disguises Fionn, dressing him as a baby and hiding him in a cradle. Then she bakes some cakes, hiding some iron in some of them, and waits for the giant’s arrival.

When Benandonner arrives, not finding Fionn, he waits for him in his house. At the same time, he tries to intimidate Oona by showing her his great power. At this point, Fionn’s clever wife offers Benandonner some iron-cakes, but as he bites into cakes, the iron he chips his teeth. Oona ridicules him for being weak, saying that her husband eats those cakes without troubles, and feeds one (without iron) to the camouflaged Fionn. Benandonner, having seen the baby’s strength, is scared to meet his father and runs back to Scotland, smashing the causeway behind him so Fionn couldn’t follow.

True story: Buddy's family came to America as indentured servants to 2nd Jonestown. They headed west after paying their debt. On the way, somewhere around Alabama, they had been there a while, the patriarch beat another man to death. The man was a child abuser and a wife beater. Buddy's elder came upon one of these events and took the matter in hand.

The judge gave the man an option. Go to jail or marry the woman and raise the children. He married the woman, raised the children along with the three she had by him.

Same here. Basic Training is designed to grind up smart-asses like Bill Murray's character and either make soldiers out of them, or get rid of them. No way he makes it through with that attitude intact. Plus, Warren Oates was too old to be a DI, although he did a decent job in the role, aside from putting up with way too much crap from Murray and Ramis.

43 Fingal's Cave is very cool! Columnar jointing is very common, nay, ubiquitous in basalt, as a drive through the Columbia River Gorge will readily reveal. It looks like regular hexagons, and statistically, that may be how it nets out, but close examination will soon reveal that no two columns have exactly the same cross-section. What it is, is shrinkage cracks, as the once-molten rock solidifies and cools.

73 Grok says the ONT is full of it.

No, Abraham Lincoln was not a bartender. He did, however, co-own a general store in New Salem, Illinois, in the early 1830s with William Berry, which was licensed to sell liquor. Lincoln occasionally sold alcohol over the counter as part of the store’s operations, but this was a small aspect of his work there, and he was not a bartender in the modern sense. His primary roles during that time were as a storekeeper, postmaster, and surveyor, before he pursued law and politics.

89 56 1981 was a terrible year for American cars.

Posted by: Braenyard

The very first car I ever drove as a teenager was a 1981 Chrysler K-Car. It was my grandparents car, and they gave it to my mom. It was, uh, not great. It needed a push, when going downhill. If it went over 65, the engine conked out. So, no power, flaky engine, one lone speaker for sound. It had an AM/FM radio and that was about as modern as it got.

The term “doof” has a few meanings depending on context:
1. Music Festival (Australia): In Australian slang, a “doof” is an outdoor electronic music festival or rave, often held in remote or bush settings, featuring techno, trance, or other electronic dance music. The term comes from the onomatopoeic “doof doof” sound of the bass in electronic music. These events are known for their countercultural, free-spirited vibe, similar to Burning Man but smaller and more music-focused.
2. Slang for Fool: In informal English, especially in Australian or British slang, “doof” can be a playful or derogatory term for a foolish or silly person, akin to “doofus.”
3. Fictional Context: In some fictional settings, like the animated series Phineas and Ferb, “Doof” refers to Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, a comedic villain character. This is unrelated to the other meanings but might come up in pop culture discussions.

After FOUR HOURS (I guess she was eating for the whole week) she was still there. Charlie and I decided f*ck this and we went in. Noticed a guy arrive on a Harley wearing - I think - snake-skin suit, top and bottoms (some kind of exotic skin). Noticed a mike and chair at the far end when we went inside. We're sitting by the fireplace, opposite side of the room, when somebody starts singing One Scotch, One Whiskey, One Beer at the mike. After a short while, one of us says "that sounds like Thorogood". It was.

Murray will always get an A+ from me for that movie. I also enjoyed his 1988 movie, 'Scrooged'. As said above, he stretched his wings, going from a 2nd year 'new guy' on Saturday Night Live to a variety of funny and/or interesting movie roles.

Someone said above he was in a league with Eddie Murphy for comdians in movies. I'll also add Robin Williams who did some interesting work after 'Mork'.

If I had a video library, that would be a part of my starter package, along with 'Blazing Saddles', 'The Princess Bride' and 'Galaxy Quest'.

Walking to the pool we go right buy the practice field, and they're comin'/goin' between there and the locker room/gym. When they built the new arena at SDSU they left a lot of the concrete bleachers from the old Aztec Bowl below/beside it, nice move. Earliest games I recall from there, before SD Stadium was built.

With roving searchlight beams
This magic day when super-science
Mingles with the bright stuff of dreams

I have to give the minority population of D.C. a little credit here. It would be so easy for them to join in and be given all sorts of Munchausen By Protest praise. But they haven't. It's white liberals who often don't even live in D.C. who are doing the protesting, protesting a drop in crime and increased safety.

So kudos to the residents in D.C. for seeing common sense and staying away from the protests.

Looks like you got your answer:

The flag is actually supposed to be that way. The flag is placed that way on military uniforms as well. It may appear backwards to an observer but it’s showing the flag moving forward not retreating. The union (stars) are moving forward at all times towards the battle (enemy). Represents the courage of our military members.

And good evenenenenening!

It's not an uncommon legal term for documents that impose some kind of obligation.

If you forge a check you may be charged with "uttering a forged instrument" in some jurisdictions (the obligation here is for the bank to hand over cash when the check is presented).

361 After watching that 9/2/45 film restoration a few days back, I noted some of the odd trivia about the even here on an ONT. Of course the fact that Yoko Ono's uncle was present and heavily involved was most ONT-relevant.

The younger guy in the full diplomatic formal dress, holding a briefcase, Kase Tashekazu, was a diplomat his whole life. That's Yoko's uncle. I am fairly sure he spoke English, which makes sense. Dutch guy who did the film restoration did not know this particular trivia.

Almost my favorite part of the whole story were the signatures of Canada and France that were in the wrong place - something pointed out by the *Japanese* side (almost surely Kase, probably the only fluent English speaker there). Eventually Gen. Sutherland agrees to "correct" it all by crossing out/switching the country names under the signatures, by hand (as explained in the video narration).

Nothing more Japanese than, as the losers, correcting a minor part of the document that just happens to be the acceptance of your country's only surrender in its history.

390 >> Is it true the flag is "backwards" on uniforms as this Youtube comment claims?

The "backwards flag" is always on the right side of the uniform. On the left, it would be correct. The idea is indeed that the flag in motion points forward, that is the union is at the front.

That 1853 Perry flag was indeed "backwards" pure the rules. When displayed on a wall, the union should be to the left.

The explanation about protective linen being sewn on the other side to protect that old, fragile flag is the reason. For some reason, they had to sew it on that side.

392 AOP all I know is was a career diplomat, so probably with the foreign ministry forever.

Blonde Morticia as you know from that narration, the incredible coincidence that the Japanese foreign minister signing the surrender (Shigemetsu) was injured in the 1932 Shanghai bombing, and the Canadian who signed (Col. Musgrave) was present at that event, and came to the assistance of Shigemetsu and his delegation. Amazing.

And I'm more than willing to give Col. Musgrave a break for this signing mistake. He lost an eye in WW I, and Canada punched far far above its weight in WWII (like the entire anglospheric Commonwealth).

Besides, the whole story is amazing and as I noted, incredibly Japanese. Also - the French signer (Gen. LeClerc) must have signed on the "Dominion of Canada" line.

Yes. When displayed on anything that moves, including people, the blue field leads.
Posted by: Oddbob

True for flags hung vertically, as well. Union in the upper-left, unless it's on something that moves, then union in the upper-front-side.

.....if it's on the side of whatever's moving, of course. A bumper sticker on the back of a car, or a patch on the chest of a uniform, should have the union in the upper-left, since cars don't generally roll sideways and people don't generally walk sideways.

Image search on "US flag right shoulder" will find a few military uniforms showing the "reversed" flag patch; some zoomed out far enough to show other elements that prove the whole image isn't mirrored.

An odd flag-code rule I learned the last time this came up: a flag displayed hung over a street, where neither side would be the "front" or "back" of the flag, should have the union on the north or east side. Similar for one hung in the middle of a "room" (e.g. sports stadium) with multiple entrances.

What of the German surrender, you ask? Well, their surrender(s) are not as cut-n-dry. The German forces were in disarray after Hitler kilt himself on April 30th. Hitler's "Will" left Gobbles and Admiral Dornitz in charge of all German forces. Gobbles, a crackpot fruitcake socialist, kilt himself on May 1st.

The Krauts tried to get cute and surrender, but also keep fighting.

Anyway, this excellent video explains it all much better than me.

Had a weird one here in Central Calif a couple days ago.... 4700 different lightning strikes during about 3 hours... Thunder at times was like 30 seconds long...

Never saw anything like it here... started a bunch of fires.

422 Didn't get the t-storms or rain that was forecast.. oh, well. Just clouds and a bit of wind.

At least it blew away most of the wildfire smoke!

80 years ago, September 2nd, 1945, the JAPS officially surrendered.

Have you ever watched the Surrender signing ceremony? Do you wish to? Here it is, in color.

btw, notice how they call the document/agreement an "Instrument". An instrument of surrender. Interest, yes?

What some perhaps didn’t know was that on the Missouri, everyone not in the audience or participating was ready to go right back to war. All the guns were manned and everything was set to go right back into action had the Japanese instead did some funny business aboard ship.

I learned that touring the Big Mo. There’s something about standing at the spot where the surrender took place, and looking ahead to the Arizona Memorial…
