Evening, late toilers. Morning, insomaniacals. I too am awake about an hour before I should be, and this time I *can* blame not getting back to sleep on the cats. Little Dagny was stretched next to me (!), and Stirling came stalking across and pounced on her. They went rolling and scrambling away with me muttering, "Cut it out!" After about ten minutes trying to drift back off, I gave it up as a bad job.
Coffee now, coffee in a few more minutes too. A simple philosophy at this hour . . . but mine own. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 02, 2025 05:19 AM (omVj0) Posted by: OkJohn at September 02, 2025 05:20 AM (NC/it) 44
Holy cow, is that Fourth Circuit decision bad. Cox is entirely right and the decision should be overturned: if the decision is allowed to stand (where an ISP is liable for bad behavior of its customers after simply being told, without proof, "Hey, this customer is doing something illegal"), then ISPs are going to refuse Internet access to anywhere that serves the public. Cafes, hotels, libraries... are suddenly going to have trouble getting anyone to give them Internet access, because everyone will be scared of getting slapped with a lawsuit for what J. Random Library Patron did online.
I'm glad the Supreme Court is taking the case, and I hope they overturn it HARD. Posted by: Robin Munn at September 02, 2025 05:21 AM (XAlNs) 45

I have no recall of any dreams from last night. Probably a mercy all around.
It's 75 F. at 4:20 am, which is amazing considering the 83-85 we saw overnight (!) for the last few months (and that was just the temp, never mind the heat index). I should go walk this morning. I really should. Yesterday I did some research on hotels in Birmingham and Evansville. They look good. What I wonder is, if I wake up at 4 am in a hotel room, how am I gonna occupy myself? I can chat with all of you, and if there is an exercise room I can use the treadmill et al. And if the room has a coffeemaker, microwave, and/or kitchenette, I can make breakfast. I need to be sure my hotels have those things, huh? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 02, 2025 05:27 AM (omVj0) 47

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at September 02, 2025 *** I've never used AI for that on mine, but seeing what other writers have done with something I plan is usually very helpful. No, I'm not talking plagiarism, simply an evaluation of technique. As for research into something I know nothing about: The *usual* advice is to write what you know. Dean Koontz, however, advised, "Write what you know -- or what you are prepared to learn about." Otherwise only cops could write cop stories, only doctors medical stories, and we'd have no tales of interstellar exploration at all. The 'Net makes it much easier to research enough for a short story. And then there are libraries for deeper fact-diving for longer works.
