Tech News

There is a great deal of silliness about. But as I mentioned, my feet hurt.

(The doctor did check them, but concluded that I would live if my feet hurt, but potentially not if she didn't get my blood pressure under control. So, for now, I hurt. Next appointment is Tuesday.)

There hasn't been a hailstorm since the last time I replaced my roof.
I'm not interested in replacing my home security, or exterminator, or lawn care.

If you want a laugh, look up the "Final Experiment", an "expedition" to one of the bases in Antarctica where the 24-hour sun was possible. Somebody financed a trip for a group of the biggest flat-earthers to go down there. They got them to admit that, yep, a 24-hour sun circling the horizon would rule out the "ice wall" stuff, and yep, the earth was spherical.

Some refused to go (for reasons), but a few of them went.

They went down, and saw the midnight sun. The rest of the flat-earthers turned on them as selling out to the globe conspiracy. It's a hoot, and you can find some Youtube excerpts of all that.

55 Today is the twentieth anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina, and the local Fox outlet (among, I suspect, all the local stations) is babbling away about memorials and showing retrospectives. Yes, I was here for it. Miss Linda and I, and our cats, crawled out of town on Sunday morning, taking *twelve solid hours* to get only a little west of Baton Rouge. We spent the night on the floor of a community center in Erwinville, listening to weird people talk to themselves. The next day we made it to College Station in TX, where we stayed -- happily, for me -- for about six weeks. My employer paid me right along. Our places here were fine when we got back in early October and I was back at my desk at work in early November.

My view at the time, and still: If you had the sense, and resources, to leave for good, you should have. It's crazy to return to the ruins of Pompeii after Vesuvius has erupted -- and you know it will happen again.

I had the sense, but not the resources, to leave then.

Exactly . . . and the MS Gulf Coast got the direct strike of the winds and storm surge, not Da Swamp. Here it was the failure of the levees that caused the lingering horror.

Far be it from me to suggest that the, uh, quality of the inhabitants that made the difference in the after-storm response in MS. (But it was.)

On TV I watched the chaos, the looting, the learned helplessness of the locals who couldn't evacuate (or didn't bother), and I changed a lot of my perspective on the world that weekend. In contrast, with Hurricane Betsy in '65, I know the power was back on in less than two weeks.

Some of these groups have spent a pretty penny trying to disprove something that was proven ages ago and found to their dismay that the expensive testing equipment they bought was "faulty" aka didn't give them the readings they wanted. Really it's just a form of Gnosticism.

94 The company I worked for sold a lot of attachments for construction/demolition equipment (excavator thumbs, bulldozer rakes, etc.) and 2005 was a very busy year due to all the hurricanes.

I was told by a customer who worked cleanup in New Orleans that the odor was atrocious and it looked like a bomb had gone off in the 9th Ward.

I remember being at work listening to Ray Nagin do a radio interview early the morning the storm was coming in and before the extent of the flooding after the levees broke.

He didn’t know exactly how bad it was because it was still dark out, but you could tell he knew it was the worst N.O. had ever been hit.

It’s a big bowl, so I knew before it happened they were going to be in big trouble if a levee was topped and broke open.

Then to watch for days the looting and chaos and the dysfunction of it all was really one of the worst things to see after a hurricane.

I lived through Hurricane Hugo and the aftermath here in 1989, so I’ve got a little experience under my belt.

Nagin and the governor really screwed the pooch and made the disaster worse because of no emergency plans as far as I can tell.

112 I had a wonderful Aussie lager beer decades ago from a Harris Teeter that had quite the international selection in their beer cave section.

I wish I could remember the name.
It started with an S and had Hill or Hills in the name.

Spring Hill or something.
I looked it up earlier to see if I could find the name but it’s been 20 years since I tried it and the company might be out of business by now.

Anyway I loved it.
Great taste, much better than an oil can of Fosters.

Only ever had two bottles, though.

So I know the Aussies can make a great beer.

Anyway ... our math class during junior year had one of those Olivetti Programma beasties. Programmed it to compute square roots, I did. Tried to do cube roots, but no such luck. The following year we got to write, compile and run Fortran programs on an IBM mainframe at NMU, the college in town. You fed your Fortran card deck to be compiled, which generated a compiled card deck. Those, in turn, were run with another deck and voila! ran your program. Lotsa chad involved.

127 I am starting to believe that "flat earth" stuff is mostly nonsense but a few things they trot out really are legitimate, and arise from the fact that we really don't know how the universe itself is constructed. Curvature, as a concept, is probably not what we think it is, and the Earth is both "round" and "flat" at the same time in some strange way that we don't even have the mental framework to approach yet.

We do know that space and time are not some celestial invariant blank canvas that reality is smeared upon, but are active and changing because "space" and "time" are really simplified representations of a far more complicated topology. We don't live in up/down, left/right, front/back, and before/after. We live in x1, x2, x3, x4, and who the hell knows what else, with some x's more timey or spacey than others. But that mess collapses into the familiar on any scale we would ever directly experience.
