THE MORNING RANT: This Land is Whose Land - Should the U.S. Government Offload Some of its Vast Undeveloped Land Holdings?

Park Closed .png

The issue of the federal government owning too much land in the western United States was a big issue among conservatives in the ‘80s and ‘90s. With the government owning 80% of Nevada, 64% of Utah, plus huge portions of other states, the “Sagebrush Rebellion” advocated, unsuccessfully, for the government to sell off excess land, or transfer it to state control to administer.

I was firmly aligned with that objective.

It was almost surprising to me in the past year or so to learn that the modern Sagebrush Rebellion is about keeping those lands under the control of the federal government. Outdoorsmen whom I read and greatly respect such as Braxton McCoy successfully fought plans by Senator Mike Lee to sell off a few million acres of federal lands, and their reasoning did cause me to re-consider my prior position. Most admirably, the new sagebrush guys want to preserve as much undeveloped American soil as possible, not only for use by those who love the outdoors, but also to keep it closer to how God created it.

But reading about what is going on in Canada with the government exercising emergency powers to prohibit its citizens from accessing “Crown land” (e.g. government owned land) has me re-re-thinking the issue.

“Nova Scotia bans hiking and use of vehicles in woods as dry conditions raise wildfire fears” [CBC – 8/05/2025]

The Nova Scotia government has announced it's banning hiking, camping, fishing and use of vehicles such as ATVs in the woods due to an elevated wildfire risk.

Casting a worm into a lake doesn’t cause a forest fire, but it really doesn’t matter to the Canadian ruling class, which has such a hatred of personal freedom that it will use any excuse to oppress its citizens. There was some backlash to the ban, of course, so the ruling left-wing party then stated that it’s necessary to ban Canadian citizens from woods and parkland because they might hurt themselves walking their dogs in nature.

The American left looks on in envy at how Canada represses its people. I can’t help but note that the demographic makeup of the American outdoorsmen fighting to preserve federally owned land are the same demographic for whom the left professes their hatred and seeks to punish.

The left will likely gain power again in Washington someday, and I do not trust them to administer federal land holdings in the manner outdoorsmen desire. Glenn Beck wrote a piece last month that made some good counterpoints in this intra-conservative debate. In this piece titled “The Real Land Grab Isn’t Mike Lee’s – It’s Biden’s ’30 by 30’” he wrote:

According to the latest online frenzy, [Senator] Lee wants to sell off national parks, bulldoze public lands, gut hunting and fishing rights, and hand America’s wilderness to Amazon, BlackRock, and the Chinese Communist Party. None of that is true.

His proposal would have protected against the real land-grab already under way — the one pushed by the Biden administration. In 2021, Biden launched a plan to “conserve” 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030. This effort follows the United Nations-backed “30 by 30” initiative, which seeks to place one-third of all land and water under government control.

Ask yourself: Is the U.N. focused on preserving your right to hunt and fish? Or are radical environmentalists exploiting climate fears to restrict your access to American land?

Mr. Beck then discussed how the Biden / UN agenda would subsequently push for a “50 by 50” agenda, whereby the government would own 50% of all US lands by 2050. Beck also pointed out something perhaps even more pernicious:

That brings me to a piece of legislation most Americans haven’t even heard of: the Sustains Act. Passed in 2023, the law allows the federal government to accept private funding from organizations, such as BlackRock or the Bill Gates Foundation, to support “conservation programs.” In practice, the law enables wealthy elites to buy influence over how American land is used and managed.

The real threat is the creeping partnership between unelected global elites and our own government, a partnership designed to consolidate land, control rural development, and keep Americans penned in so-called “15-minute cities.”

I realize now that my 1990s support of that Sagebrush Rebellion was in line with my “principled” anti-government / libertarian attitude of that era. I’ve matured and abandoned my libertarian idealism, in part because of complicated issues like this one. I don’t want the entire West carved into ranchettes and strip malls, but neither do I want the land to all be “nature preserves” controlled by “philanthropaths” who would ban the rest of us from those lands.

Pondering the issue, there are so many political factors to consider:

• The left considers all U.S. land stolen land. Their “land acknowledgements” are clearly paving the way for a retrocession of federal lands to “indigenous peoples.”

• Outdoors was the healthiest place to be during the Covid era. Yet the Covid communists took the opportunity at that time to deny access to parks and beaches. That was a test run for bigger freedom lockdowns, but they’ve already proven they will lock us indoors.

• President AOC (or equivalent) would be thrilled to deny the hated “outdoorsmen demographic” the right to hunt and fish on federal lands.

• The left has already surrendered city parks to their criminal constituencies. Why do we think they won’t also forfeit federally owned lands to criminals, aliens, or an American caliphate.

• Caught up in the religious fervor of the Church of Climate, the left quickly transitioned from protecting the environment to despoiling it. Covering undeveloped land with solar panels and wind farms has become a form of evangelical mission work for them. They have embraced the slaughter of raptors and whales as a sacrifice to their angry climate God, and their religious fervor has compelled them to transition from “Save the Whales” 40 years ago to “Kill the Whales” now. They would gladly sacrifice wilderness areas in service to their cult.

I don’t have a principled position to advocate here, nor even a “take.” Common sense and a realistic understanding of the world we live in versus the ideal we’d desire should help guide conservatives in this debate. Obviously, the national parks are untouchable, but returning a great deal of federal lands to the states would ensure that the radical left can’t ever get its hands on all of America’s wilderness.

But I keep defaulting to the position that I don't understand why the federal government holds so much undeveloped land "inside" states. If the feds hold more land inside a state than the state does, why is it even a state?

Most of them do not care about things that do not affect them. Urbanites are usually the worst about it and most insular because they are most divorced from the consequences of their stupid political choices. NYC has impoverished the rest of NY State by its demands and control over voting.

Likewise, those wealthy urban and suburbanites want their idyllic second homes/vacation places in the hinterlands but don't want the natives living there to make a decent wage by cutting timber, mining, and grazing cattle.

Privatize the gains, socialize the losses.

54 When you read English literature from the 18th and 19th centuries, you will see frequent references to "poaching" and the landlords constant efforts to brutally suppress it. (it's usually a backdrop to the story about the Lady of the Manor casually letting the saucy stable boys see she hasn't got any knickers on under her corset and skirts)

So what's really going on is that England had a long tradition of common lands where the working poor could hunt rabbits and other things to try and supplement their meager diets. The landed gentry slowly exerted more and more control over these lands, gradually making any entry onto land they "owned" (read: were given a license to occupy by the Crown) an offense punished by heavy prison sentences, or worse. And thus condemning the common people of the area to malnutrition and even starvation.

Canada doesn't have the latter two types of takings, but National Parks get created for those purposes. I would support paring down such tracts to just those parts most visible to and enjoyed by tourists and hikers and campers. All such tracts of land should be open to exploration for, and production of petroleum and minerals, except for a few key features. Logging and grazing, also, where practicable. And the public should have right of entry into all such lands, too.

I don't want to see El Capitan torn down as a granite quarry, but there's no good reason not to mine gold or uranium from some remote corner of Grand Canyon NP. Or drill for oil in Banff NP.

76 My hypothesis some years back, not sure if it’s possible, but it’s clear resource extraction has been curtailed, usually under the guise of an endangered cockroach.

Surveys done in the 1960s found enormous proven reserves of petroleum, Shale oil, coal, natural gas in Montana, Wyoming, Utah representing hundreds of years worth of domestic energy. The way I heard it, the USA is the “Saudi Arabia” of Coal. High quality coal. Then I read the USA ranks 17th in world coal reserves. Which is it?

Leftist politicians in any case swoop in an declare it off limits and declare new parks and monuments without any input from the states. Bureaucrats make it impossible to do business. I wonder if they have pledged these resources as collateral somehow. No logging, no mining, no nothing.

77 I always wondered why it was so important to turn the Columbia River Gorge into a National Scenic Area, but not to do the same to Monterey Bay in California. The reason is that rich people own the land in Monterey and there was money to be made selling off the orchards in the Gorge and shutting down logging.

Pretty much the standard MO for most of our politicians. The very people that want the power are usually the ones that if you really knew them, shouldn't have it. HOA officials often demonstrate this very thing.

Most of us voters have to rely like Milton Friedman said--incentivize doing the people's will and punish them when they don't. That is why those in power always try to insulate themselves from the electorate via cheating, spending opponents into oblivion, rigging elections via lawfare, etc.

I agree. It's a terrible arrangement that oppresses 99% of natives. The Indian reservations are cesspools of poverty, crime, drugs, corruption, and machine politics that benefit only the very select few.

Drive through some of them in places like Montana and you'd swear you're in Thunderdome.

Get rid of these things and integrate the natives into the population. Shoulda been done 150 years ago.

151 During Carter administration government paid to have private enterprises build 16 biomass electric generation plants built in the West.
They made money at a quarter dollar a kilowatt.

Then government killed them off with tightening of emissions and reduction of access to fuel and certain small incentive payments. They certainly helped remove fuels from forests that have since repeatedly burned.

But...keep your eye on the ball...the post biomass sourced electricity costs 45 cents a kilowatt. Despite the spread the government makes sure the fuel is destroyed by wilfire while we pay more for electricity.

Our government isn't working for us.

First comes obedience and submission to his expressed will. A massive stumbling block for many is "I want something so Lord make it happen". If you notice, his own son, Jesus, did not want to be crucified and said so during prayer to the Lord. "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will"

Plainly the lesser does not order the greater to issue favors like a Pez dispenser.

The Lord never hears self serving prayers or those done with an arrogant spirit that one is owed something. But He, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is there when even your friends, family, society, desert you if one has a meek and humble spirit.

The operating costs turning rocks into REM is prohibitive in the former US.

It will require major relaxation of regulations and insurance relief, and the unions need to be kept out - OR - the whole industry needs to be heavily subsidized like they do in China.

- OR - we do this outside the US and employ slave labor, again, like China.

Imagine if a timber company could rent forest acreage for 99 years and really grow some timber, that they could thin, serially harvest, and replant for returning for further auctions?
If the timber company could both harvest AND get a cut of the improved standing timber come the next auction, that would create a whole new class of forestry.
Not just cutting trees, but holding a contract on a land to care and take commercial thinning, and then get part of the value of the improved or maintained roads, and improved stands would attract a lot of small companies, it would encourage a lot of small guys who do the jobs the big companies don't like to do to start their own small timber companies.

Even on the night he was arrested, he told Peter to put the sword away because if Jesus actually wanted to stay safe, he could have called upon 12 legions of angels to protect him. It’s not an either or. Do you want Yosemite to be developed to allow other urban areas to expand?

222 I'd rather the federal government keep it off limits than see it sold off to China.

223 It turns out that the emergency responders in urban areas are under stand-down orders. So, if there is a fire, they should not have to travel to it to fight the fire. That is what happened in Los Angeles, so the first responders stayed in their fire houses and watched it burn on TV.

225 Texas cut a good deal when it joined the United States: the State retained all public lands. Currently less than 2% of Texas is federal land. Utah 63% Fed, Idaho 61% Fed, shockingly Montana is only 29 % Fed. My opinion is, the majority of the land inside a state's borders should be controlled and disposed of as the State sees fit. The Feds can keep the national parks and other conservation areas but that's it

We owe it to the animals, to the first peoples and to our very souls

I live in Texas and it wasn’t a good deal in the end
It’s been cut up and sold to the highest bidder, all the wild areas outside of West Texas are gone , and that mostly desert….

Texas doesn’t even have oOME wild horse population

It’s overpopulated and a shame, damn shame

Join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and get your Patriarchal Blessing.
If you are not already a hereditary member of a Jewish tribe you will be adopted into a tribe.

230 Take a look at what one of the underlying issues is. The hunters are concerned about access if some land is sold. What they see is that what these rich speculators do is buy land and then deny access to the public land. So you can have a ring of private land that essentially denies anyone the ability to hunt on public lands.
