Hey there cats 'n' kittens.
Saw a fun movie today, Darren Aronofsky's "Caught Stealing", about a washed up baseball player turned bartender who agrees to cat-sit for his punk rocker friend in the apartment next door when he leaves for London. The friend is mixed up with an unsavory crowd and they want something of his very badly. The bartender ends up being chased around New York by the Russian mob, a crooked cop, and two very dangerous Hassids, all while trying to keep the cat safe. The Siberian cat steals every scene he's in. Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at August 29, 2025 07:45 PM (kpS4V) 22

Japan is a great place to visit. Just budget enough time to time-adjust, and to do more than the standard stuff (which is good/worth doing).
Fall probably best time, but know that crowding at popular places can be bad due mostly to the masses from Chy-nah who now travel. Get out of the big city at least once. Take a regular train, not Shinkansen (you see little from those). Stay at an onsen. Get to the mountains (Takayama’s a good choice). Take out dinner from a department store food court back to the hotel, and try a regular ramen joint (kind that sells little tickets outside) in a regular neighborhood. River otters are frequently blamed for attacks that, in fact, have been perpetrated by muskrats, minks, beavers, martens and raccoons. Such aggressive behavior as they do manifest on rare occasions is typically an act of self-defense.

Posted by: All Hail Eris, She-Wolf of the 'Ettes 'Ettes at August 29, 2025 07:45 PM (kpS4V) HA! I wanted to see it ! thumbs up or down ? Evening, Horde...how goes it?
Time to exchange the lunacy that is this blog for some light reading this evening that's even *more* insane. That's right, I've returned to the world of the Malazan Empire. "Blood and Bone" by Ian C. Esslemont is one part Allan Quatermain, one part Solomon Kane, one part Heart of Darkness, and quite a few more parts of sheer crazy awesomeness. About a half dozen factions are slowly working their way into the Malazan equivalent of Darkest Africa for an explosive confrontation. Meanwhile, the Jungle of Himatan is so humid and hostile that armor, weapons, and even clothing simply rot off the body. Oh, and there are spiders and centipedes so deadly even Australia would go looking for a stout boot to stomp on them. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at August 29, 2025 08:49 PM (IBQGV) 147

Piper, CrotchetyJarHead's reco of a guide could be a good idea. All depends on what you end up doing. Remember Japan is a very "advanced" country in the sense of everyday life, technology, transport, infrastructure, etc. More than some of the US. So independent exploration isn't hard at all.
If you can make a direct personal connection with people via the shiba thing, THAT will be your best asset at least for the area where they live. No different than anywhere else - locals can help/guide/reco things much better than anyone. So older/grown children. If the teens have any particular interests, that's a place to start. But you can figure that out internally between y'all. Posted by: rhomboid at August 29, 2025 09:31 PM (U/Byj) 176

Recall that both the atomic target cities were on a "no-bomb" list, precisely to boost the shock value of the atomic bombings (narrator: this failed, the atomic bombings provided a key excuse/off-ramp for the peace party to end the whole thing, but appeared to not impress the others).
Posted by: rhomboid at August 29, 2025 09:39 PM (U/Byj) The "others" wanted to continue the war, but failed in an attempted coup against the peacemakers (Imperial army generals and the Emperor). Posted by: joemarine at August 29, 2025 09:54 PM (y171U) 192
I bought 8 lbs of peaches today, and picked and canned pears. I got 7 pints of pears canned, and honestly although I love canned pears, they are a pain to peel, core and can.
I am canning peaches tomorrow. I think I will do chunks in pints again. Mom was wonderful at canning whole half-peaches, and mine look like I skinned them with a weed-eater when I try it. Posted by: Kindltot at August 29, 2025 09:57 PM (rbvCR) 193

The tyranny and oppression are getting cranked up in the UK.
Eventually a populace figures out there are more of them than rulers. Posted by: davidt Capital controls are next. next month it will illegal to draw more than 200 pounds from your account in cash, and if you make more than that in a month you wind up on the watch list, and may have your account taken, or prevented from allowing cash withdrawls. There is also a new tax on all paychecks as well. It is to pay for the deficit. Bank of England appears broke. The British deficit is too big to ignore. Europe is running out of money. Nurse, Clarence, Neverenoughcaffeine, Mikey, et al,
Honestly, I have quite a bit of room. We've hosted our kids and their kids and also used to do an annual lasagna festival for three dozen of our skiing friends. Bozeman, not Butte, but I have mountains on three sides and a valley on the fourth. Posted by: Wenda at August 29, 2025 10:06 PM (utsBX) 200

I notice every single judge who voted against the tariff regimen President Trump installed is a Democrat appointed by Obama, Biden and one Clinton appointee, except for one person appointed by GHW Bush, who was almost a Democrat.
Could it be that judges really are partisan? I am shocked!! Posted by: Justice John Roberts at August 29, 2025 10:15 PM (4eAMv) 202

Posted by: clarence Start talking. I love Butte. Posted by: nurse ratched at August 29, 2025 10:02 PM (mT+6a) I know this has been willowed, but Butte would make for an epic meetup. I could show folks the husk of the old St. James hospital where I was born. Posted by: Mikey Alpha Kilo, Mellow for the Long Weekend at August 29, 2025 10:36 PM (0aYVJ) 204
