Homme en armure
Camille Corot

No noble knight he! He has to take a piss, and that spot just below his shoulder blade has been itchy since five seconds after he put on his armor!

Posted by: Bulg at September 01, 2025 09:49 AM (77rzZ)

72 This is such an effective painting. The colors are subdued, as if they faded over time. This isn't some young warrior in shining armor ready to fight the enemy or a dragon. He's older, tired and seen a lot in his years and the tools of his trade, armor and sword, show their use. I would expect his horse, if shown, would be not fiery bu older and dependable. His posture is weary as is his expression; tired but not defeated. You can almost hear him thinking with a sigh "once more unto the breach".

I enjoy Corot's landscapes, especially the trees, but this portrait is amazing.

104 150 Media Outlets to Stage Anti-Israel Campaign Coordinated by NGOs, Leaked Docs Show

A leaked strategic document has exposed a coordinated international media campaign designed to pressure news outlets into publishing synchronized anti-Israel content on September 1st, meant to inaccurately portray Israel as systematically targeting journalists in Gaza and barring press freedom.

The campaign, orchestrated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and advocacy group Avaaz, involves approximately 150 media outlets across 50 countries in what organizers describe as a "world-first" coordinated newsroom action. According to the Hamas-tied Palestinian Information Center, outlets that signed on include: “Al Jazeera, The Independent, +972, Local Call, The Intercept, Mediapart, L’Humanité, Forbidden Stories, il Fatto Quotidiano, El País, RTVE, Daraj, Mada Masr, Le Desk, and L’Orient-Le Jour (Lebanon), along with numerous outlets across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.”

111 In 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a historic $97.5 billion budget surplus, later revealed to be a $165 billion deficit due to faulty projections.

This really took place.

In 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared that the state had achieved the largest budget surplus in U.S. history.

Newsom stated, "No other state in American history has ever experienced a surplus as large as this."

He suggested returning some of that money to the citizens, and given the high cost of living in California, many were pleased to receive a small refund from the state.

However, there was a significant issue—it was entirely untrue.

The supposed $97.5 billion surplus was actually a four-year estimate based on incorrect revenue assumptions made by Newsom's staff.

In 2024, his team quietly released a revised assessment, indicating that the 2022 $97.5 billion surplus was actually short by $165 billion.

What was touted as the largest surplus in American history turned out to be a huge deficit. This aligns perfectly with Gavin Newsom's track record.

141 The United Nations said Yemen’s Houthis detained at least 11 workers on Sunday in raids on UN premises, which came after rebel authorities had made numerous arrests following Israel’s killing of their prime minister.

There has been no comment from Houthi authorities on the reported raids, but the Iran-backed group has previously arrested international aid workers.

The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement: “I strongly condemn the new wave of arbitrary detentions of UN personnel today in Sanaa and Hodeida… as well as the forced entry into UN premises and seizure of UN property.”

The Edsel had a bunch of strikes against it right at the start. There was a recession as they introduced the new marque, for one thing; the name was not attractive (compare Mercury Comet and Ford Fairlane, for instance); and there was the infamous "horse collar" grill styling that the public disliked.

Ford also tried offering new (for them) tech on the Edsel like a push-button automatic transmission, which in those pre-electronic days was asking for trouble.

Apparently the semi ran a red light at a 3 way intersection while they were making a right turn. Left side of the car was completely smashed. Firefighters had to use special equipment to get the driver out.

The driver had massive injuries on her left side, broke every bone on the left side above the knee, collapsed lung and punctured spleen. She was helicoptered to Harbor View. She's out of ICU but barely survived emergency surgery. Her boyfriend sitting next to her and sleeping suffered relatively minor injuries. The passenger in the back seat broke every rib in her body and sternum. She also required surgery. A child in the other car involved in the accident also died. Ugh. Freaked my sister out a bit because she's had so many friends die or get seriously sick in recent months.

I know. I ordered the invention of the Edward head while I was shitting myself to death in this damn armor. They never did get me out. Just put me on top of my tomb.
400 years later some Phillip guy stole my idea.

206 Homme en armure
Camille Corot

Corot's landscapes, yes, this painting, no, wouldn't be hanging because it's just sad with no story.

Corot was born to wealth and privilege and did not participate in any national service, war actions in his lifetime. The "knight" in this particular painting seems to be just a model, not an actual nobleman with a career.

Interesting. Thank you.

210 You got my father rolling over in his grave. Proper GM order, bottom to top, is Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac.

On the price ladder, Olds tended to be more expensive than Pontiac, I thought.

How did Pontiac's "Wide Track" campaign marketing the brand to younger auto enthusiasts affect the ladder? I'd put Pontiac between Chevy and Olds.

220 139 You have to wonder where the DeSoto fit into the Chrysler scheme. Yes, Ford and Chrysler were envious of the GM "Sloan Ladder" where budget-minded Chevy buyers could move up to Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and ultimately, Cadillac. Chrysler had Plymouth and Dodge on the lower end, and Chrysler and Imperial at the top. Turns out there was no room for DeSoto.

Similarly, Ford tried to create a new brand with Edsel, even though they already had Mercury and Lincoln for those with more $$$. The 1,100+ Edsel dealers lost their shirts, of course.

The price ladder thing was brilliant, but the car companies tended to kill it themselves. Divisions in the same company competed with each other and cost cutters tried to share as much as possible between car lines. Eventually it got to the point where the only real difference between a Chevy and a Buick was the grille and the emblem and no stripper level on the Buick. I really don't see how non "super luxury" cars even survive any more. Why would you pay a lot more for a Lexus when it is the same car as a Toyota? You want to silently boast about how you blew more money for no good reason?
