At work a few weeks ago, someone mentioned that his dad - same name as his - got a call from some company trying to sell him high-end technical equipment. He was confused about how that could happen. I asked him, "is your dad in the book?"

Deer in the headlights. I had to clarify that I meant "a landline" and therefore, a "public listing with name and phone number." I am *maybe* five years older than this guy. That cutoff must have been a hard one. Night and day.

I am not hopeful. I am also not looking forward to having to invade Britain and France to prevent these new Islamic states from having nuclear weapons. They can't build them themselves, but they will inherit a decently large arsenal.

It's now even more incongruous. An old-timey logo and a sterile, modern setting is ... odd. And they're stuck. Too much money is in it to undo it, and undoing it will no longer be effective anyway. Stopping the damage is good, and preserving the un-updated restaurants might work (assuming they updating marginal stores first), but it's a rock and a hard place.

In college we got to drive all of the roads in Canyonlands Nat'l Park. From Glen Canyon Recreation area all up through the park. On both sides of the River.

All to take large format photos of the Native Rock Art. Spent 10 days offroad with a friend and our 2 dogs.

Used to bike Moab 2x a year when I was down in Tucson.

Except that when it doesn't work - and I agree with those upthread who think it won't, and that the brand will probably never recover - it will make a lot of CEOs think it's a Kobiyashi Maru situation and just go whole-hog. Which is also fine, I suppose. The outcome is more or less the same either way.

Only very smart - or very scared - CEOs will decline to do the thing in the first place. Probably at least five years for enough C-Suite turnover - with fresh, new, non-retarded blood - before this stops being a regular occurrence.

Yup. The market decided that Cracker Barrel will be an object lesson. Sucks to be them.

This happens fairly frequently during major shifts. It's usually most visible in the stock market rather than at retail, but it isn't *that* weird. When the tech bubble imploded, the market went from rewarding everyone with "dot com" in their name to trying to destroy every high-tech enterprise. The strongest survived. The rest - some of which were certainly viable businesses - were destroyed.

This is not directly analogous, but it's best not to make decisions that will expose you to a market that wants blood. Sometimes - like the dot com collapse - you don't have a choice. Sometimes - like Proctor and Gamble, AB InBev, Cracker Barrel and so on - you *do* have a choice and make the wrong one.

118 CB has the same problem as Butt Like: both are in a super-competitive industry with low profit margins and a very mobile clientele that has 10 options either in the liquor store rack 5 feet away or the street 5000 feet away. Once you lose them, they ain’t going back.

This isn’t a luxury good market where prestige and Veblen status can carry shit products or bad PR. There are luxury car companies — Lotus, Aston, Maserati — that haven’t made a competitive product in literally decades, but they are still considered valuable brands. But for how much longer, I’m skeptical.

Yes, Jag too — but the irony is that Jag actually started making good, reliable cars. The F Type and F Pace were solid vehicles, and sold very well at first. The FT problem was it was sold in a market with the Ultimate OG Big Dog of all sports cars (the Porsche 911) and Jag couldn’t afford to refresh and update it. The FP was eaten by its sister brand Land Rover and its versions of basically the same car.

There may have been some additional damage somewhere else that may have affected things.

270 I make a pretty fair sausage gravy and SOS, as required. Milk or half & half is best, but I don’t keep that around much these days. I use Evaporated Milk. Roux or Bechamel is what you end up with, kinda, fat & flour and Milk.

Pepper, White Pepper for that 4 calendar cafe flavor. Cayenne. A bit of Fennel is good, too. Splash of hot sauce is traditional.

Good over hash browns, poached or fried eggs with slightly runny yolks. Biscuits are great but I’m not motivated to make both necessarily. English muffin or toast will have to sub.

NASA broke literally every safety rule it ever had when they did that.

It was so egregious and insane that no one really believes it really happened. NASA did a great job of covering it up.

I actually lost my job in the aftermath due to retaliation for trying to stop the test before it started.

The whole story is mind blowing.

I fucked up when I buckled under and shut up when my job was threatened by my boss who I was reporting my concerns to.. I was a Licensed Professional Engineer at the time.

Should have gone to the AG but I'm sure I would have lost my job after that anyway.

Guy almost got cut in half by a flying roll up door.

So now you know just one of the reasons I trash talk NASA everytime I have a chance.
