Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - August 27, 2025 [DJ Jazzy Rex]

20250826-image(5).jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONTwhich means another random assortment of interweb hoo ha and what not. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

***

A special thanks to scampydog to recognize the end of his service as Tuesday ONT contributor. Doggo posted last night that his ONT efforts would be limited to Saturday night Club ONT going forward. We salute you, Duke of Cool!

You're still stuck with the Dino this evening, so let's get on with it...

Group projects mostly suck. Club ONT and the A-Team are clearly the exceptions to the rule, but almost every work-related group project is a steady stream of Dilbert cartoons. Success comes despite the group rather than because of it.

Group projects for any creative endeavor is harder. Different visions and perspectives, different skill sets and interests, different life experiences, etc. Nobody goes to see paintings in museum galleries that came from painter collaborations. Can you imagine trying to get Van Gogh or Dali or Picasso to compromise with other painters to produce a painting?

For some reason, however, musicians find their way to each other periodically. Most bands get together and break up soon thereafter. Successful bands still find ways to break. Some successful find ways to avoid killing each other, mostly because they know the gravy train ends if the band ends.

For tonight's ONT, let's get past bands and focus on collaborations. Looking for those few magic moments when two artists who have found success on their own take the risk to make music together. This isn't when a guest musician sits in or makes a surprise appearance during a live concert. This isn't a duet with singers taking the lead on different parts. A collaboration is when two or more musicians get into a studio and create something new that is good on its own merits. Could be a single song or a full album.

As usual, will need grey box help on this one. DJ Rex has a small brain and short arms which makes music a challenge.

Very random historical nugget:

The Plymouth Iron Windmill Company was started in 1882 by watchmaker and inventor Clarence Hamilton in Plymouth, Michigan. It was established to make a type of windmill that Hamilton invented. The business struggled, partly because of the burden and cost of shipping heavy windmill by wagon. The board met in January 1888 [corrected from 1988] to consider closing and liquidating, but the motion failed by one vote.

Nearby, Hamilton also operated the Plymouth Air Rifle Company which made a spring powered airgun to shoot BB-size round shot. In March 1888, Hamilton approached the windmill company board with an all-metal airgun design and a request to use the factory blast furnaces to mold and stamp the gun's metal parts.

The general manager reportedly test fired the gun and exclaimed, "Boy, it's a daisy!" Can you see where this is going? The new gun was named the "Daisy BB Gun."

The board of the Windmill Company offered the gun to every farmer who purchased a windmill. Success!

By 1895, the Windmill Company stopped making windmills and began making Daisy BB gun parts exclusively. It changed its name to the Daisy Manufacturing Company. The rest is history. The company still sells BB guns today.

August 27 is a mixed date in the world of music. Steve Ray Vaughan died 35 years ago at only 35 years old. Imagine the music that might have been...

On the other side of the ledger, Alex Lifeson was born in 1953. You might have heard of Rush?

Those who are wise in the ways of American Science and Surplus will be saddened to hear of their impending closure. Get your final orders in by Sept 7. If you don't know, think of it along the lines of a rare catalog order to find the odd and unique. It isn't focused on electronics, but the loss is like Radio Shack. Where else are you going to find a Rechargeable Disco Light Wrist Band or a four piece package of military cookie cutters or a life size terra cotta warrior in the same place?

How common is your birthday?

There's a strong diurnal pattern with births as well. They peak during the early morning, between 2 - 4AM, and taper off during late afternoon and early evening.

Interestingly, that varies with season a bit as well. In Winter, lower overall number of births, that early morning peak gets sharper. In summer, it's a little more spread out.

It appears that artificial lighting is smoothing that diurnal pattern out some.

Short version: Democrats want to kill us. If it's not home grown crime, it's illegals doing the crime Americans won't. Pay more for 'health care'. If that doesn't kill us, we'll make you take an experimental vaccine for which Big Pharma got immunity and lots of cash.

Democrats, like so many politicians across the globe, hate their citizens which means they hate their countries. I don't get it. I guess I'm not supposed to.

That's why Trump, Milei and Meloni are such breaths of fresh air. They each love their countries -- in a good way.

Agreed on that. These were all great musicians that became famous through the band. It makes me wonder about bands that simply have great musicians in them (like top 10-type R&R musicians) that were part of a group. Led Zep was like that for me - every one of them were Top 10 (or even Top 5) in their respective position.

Not to menton longevity as a group. Both Yes and Led Zep.

Forgot The 'ho in that supergroup list. Probably one of the first true supergroups. Loud arena anthem music. And all talented. RIP Guitars.

337 Iran snap-back sanctions thing is likely the result of several things. US seriousness, leadership, and coercion under the OrangeMan certainly leads the list, but clearly there are others.

Israel demonstrating it really really wasn't kidding about doing whatever was needed to prevent Iran's bomb was surely a large factor as well in getting the feckless Euroweenies to play ball.

But the stage was somewhat set even before. Europe has of course been criminally recklessly irresponsible on Iran, just as it was on Iraq until it blew up in their face. But the IAEA has been blunt for some time that Iran was in late break-out stage, and an actually nukyler Iran is a sobering thought to the heretofore reckless self-dealing Euros..

350 Remember the f-35 crash in Alaska a while back? Turns out the landing gear hydraulics had ice contamination. The pilot had a one hour conference call while airborne with lockmart engineers trying to fix the problem. The frozen components talked the jet's software into believing the aircraft was on the ground so the plane stopped flying. The pilot had to immediately eject.

Talk about skynet trying to kill you.

356 At this point rumor and speculation, but about that Israeli commando visit to a facility outside Damascus: a raid to kidnap an Iranian official.

Hmmm. While the stupefying incompetence, carelessness, and arrogance of the Iranian dogs**t regime personnel are historic, this seems like too dumb even for them. Aside from the fact that the new Syrian management is so hostile to Tehran that Iranian official regional flights now must avoid their airspace. So a visitor of any significance seems unlikely.

But - who knows. Israeli exploits the last few years have far exceeded the tiny amount of decent fiction written about the area.

357 The "family tree" mentioned above was the centerfold of the liner notes booklet included in the CSN&Y 4-CD box set, released in 1990 or so. Their early bands were the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Hollies, and BS again, respectively. Downstream, spinoff, and later bands by early band members included CPR, Crosby & Nash, Manassas, Firefall, Desert Rose Band, and more.

The first "Supergroup" was long considered to be Blind Faith, though CSNY released their first LP around the same time, then knocked it into the cheap seats at Woodstock that summer.

363 Sorry, it was in January. And I happened to be up there at that time working on a project. Didn't hear the crash or see it, but heard about it over lunch. Pretty exciting for little ol' Eielson.

One of the things I was inspecting up there was a weather failure of a roof drain and a mechanical system intake that didn't have an arctic hood installed. So, yeah, January is full of fun failures to look at. Outdoors. In below zero temperatures. Just neato. At least the wind doesn't blow up there when it's that damned cold.

365 I had a high school math teacher that would bet each new class that there were two people in the class that had the same birthday. He got takers in every class and won the bet more often than losing. The bet is actually 50:50 with 22 people (I think that was the number). Since his classes were usually 30 people, he was better than even money. After the bet, he would demonstrate how to calculate the odds.

379 Wow, the "Is it real or is ity MEMX2000 V20.25" clip was very interesting. I was pretty sure on 3 of the 5 but two of them I could hsave been stumpted on. For me the clips were way too short. I'm pretty sure if I listened to the entire solo, it would be obvious.

I've done a lot of jazz soloing and one of the important aspects is how it "flows" from one musical idea to the next and how the two ideas are related and evolve. You can even mess with this and make the transistions very abrupt on purpose but you can feel that there is a human hand/mind involved slapping you around.

I am impressed at what I heard but there is no way an AI presentation could knock me over like listening to Oscar Peterson, especially live. The masters's get inside your mind and push you around. I don't think a model can do this as well. It just might be a matter of time, though.

But generally the clips were too short to give me what I felt was an accurate assesment. I felt I was guessing too much.
