50 Stunning Pictures That Show What Everyday Life Was Really Like In The 1950s

doof-50s-haircuts.jpg

Coming after World War II, the 1950s finally allowed people to take a sigh of relief as they began recovering from years of economic decline, conflicts, and battles. It was a period characterized by significant change, which was reflected in new styles and inventions. The rock and roll music and mindset also emerged in the early to mid-1950s, which made the decade that much more full of energy and fascinating attitudes.

To get a better feel of what it all looked like, our Bored Panda team put together a list of photos from that time, capturing everything from everyday moments to interesting gadgets and fashion. Scroll down to see them for yourself, and don’t forget to upvote your favorite '50s images!

Any of you Hordelings old enough to remember the 50s?

The 50s were before my time - but I do know this deep cut from The Police!

Retro submissions from The Horde

First up, from JML:

doof-jml-snoopy.jpg

We still have this Snoopy dial phone with lamp from the ‘80’s with an even older Peanuts dialing guide. It worked up to 10 years ago in Illinois.

Great site! I visit daily! Thanks!

Next is from SnailRacer:

doof-snailracer-bumper-sticker.jpg

I just picked up four of these bumper stickers.
I think they may qualify for retro?
1982 was the year of the huge nuclear disarmament rally in Central Park.

Thank you both for the submissions!

A Sapphire Serenade: Teresa’s Exquisite Gown for Her 45th Anniversary Triumph

Dearest style aficionados, prepare to be enchanted by a celebration of enduring love, unyielding strength, and unparalleled elegance. Today, we honor our radiant ‘ette Teresa, who marked her 45th wedding anniversary with her beloved Paul on August 22, 2025. The invitations, adorned with the poetic sentiment, “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale,” set the tone for an evening steeped in vintage romance.

IMG_4930r.jpg

Teresa’s gown was an embodiment of her grace and indomitable spirit. Crafted by the British artisan Mona Bocca, the custom Edwardian-inspired gown was nothing short of a symphony. Woven from teal burnt-out velvet, cappuccino satin, and delicate vintage laces, the dress captivated with its ethereal chiffon overlay and swirling floral motifs. A draped cowl neckline, ribboned waistband, and an elegant slit elevated the silhouette, while hours of meticulous hand-embellishment with glass and crystal beads evoked the opulence of Edwardian grandeur.

IMG_4927r.jpg

IMG_4923r.jpg

IMG_4921r.jpg

Teresa completed the ensemble with ribbon ballet flats, adorned with bespoke floral shoe clips that echoed the gown’s florals patterns—an incredibly charming detail.

IMG_4928r.jpg

IMG_4929r.jpg

Crowning her look was a dried lavender headpiece, its purple harmonizing with the dress while symbolizing resilience, a poignant nod to Teresa’s personal journey. One can only imagine Paul was mesmerized, mirrored by the 200 guests who gathered to witness this milestone.

From save-the-date magnets to personalized name tags, a vintage theme was woven throughout with seamless finesse. Each guest received a favor box, tenderly honoring the memory of her late daughter Michelle. Note cards invited guests to share their fondest memories, creating a tapestry of shared love and nostalgia. Teresa’s vision for the evening was a masterclass in thoughtfulness.

IMG_4922r.jpg

It is an honor to share Teresa’s gown and the details of this event with you tonight. To Teresa and Paul: may your fairytale love story continue to inspire, with countless chapters yet to unfold.

------

Thanks, Piper - and congratulations to Teresa and Paul!

The Cracker Barrel guy is "Uncle Herschel", Herschel C. McCartney (1915 - 199, the uncle of Cracker Barrel founder Dan Evins.

Uncle Herschel was a salesman for the Martha White Flour Co for 32 years, and in that job, drove all over to grocery stores and many older style general store type places all over the South.

He loved the general stores, and indeed like to sit in a chair on the front porches, next to a barrel.

83 Well, the long sad saga of my Suburban motor mounts is almost in the history books. Installed the rubber mounts to the engine block, and put the me-fabricated metal pedestals under them, let the engine weight rest on them, and levered them around until the engine sat level, as verified by a bubble level. The driver's side pedestal had to sit about 3/4" high up the slope on the bases as the right one did. Anyway, it sits nice and level now. I tack-welded both pedestal to their base plates, and removed them singly from the frame, and finished the weld on the bench. Hung a coat of paint on them, too. Now both are back in, and just need to be bolted up. And the engine still sits level, and I have adequate clearance for the T-case on the back end, too.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at August 24, 2025 10:36 PM (snZF9)

Well, if the frame were bent, and bent that badly, I'd expect the entire front of the truck to be canted. It's not. Near as I can tell, it requires a taller mount for the driver's side, and not a pair of identical ones. Engine sat canted on the old, broke-down mounts, and it sat equally canted on the new NAPA mounts from Chy-Nah. I wasted about a week of my time. Should have gone this route from the get-go.

And I have made provision to string a length of chain around the back of each mount, and tie it off to the pedestals, to snub the engine from moving too far, should one of the rubber mounts delaminate. You may remember seeing '60's and '70's Chevys with a loop of wire cable around the driver's side mount. Same idea.

151 I'm not sure CB is declining for political reasons. Chick-fil-A stepped in it twice, first alienating the homos and their many sympathizers, and then pissing off conservatives with pro-BLM stuff. But it seems fine; the key being that its quality and consistency remain unchanged. The same apparently can't be said for CB, which has had a lot of quality/price complaints post-Covid and seems to have beeb in trouble financially from Covid on, if not earlier. The rebrand stuff isn't helping; but they'd likely weather it all but for the quality/price complaints. I suspect inflation has really eaten it alive. I saw that happen to one formerly good restaurant during GWB's recession/TARPapalooza.

The AKC and clubs have added features to the show ring over the years: Grand Champion Select, Best Owner-Handled, Best Puppy or Best Bred-By.

Each one may be a good idea, but when dealt with together makes handing out ribbons more difficult and the distraction can lead to mistakes that don't get caught until later.

The last straw was when a lady told me she was pulling her dog because the deep, resonant voice I have to use scared it and it freaked out.

186 Well, if the frame were bent, and bent that badly, I'd expect the entire front of the truck to be canted.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 24, 2025 10:42 PM (R4SAT)

This is what I'm trying to figure out. You're saying on the old mounts it sat the same way, so what caused it? Were they original factory mounts and something is screwed on the original engineering? Or were the mounts changed a while back with shitty mounts that weren't engineered right. I see this shit with harley. Somewhere along the line OEM stuff goes away and you're stuck with aftermarket. Then somewhere along the line a part thats completely engineered wrong springs up and never gets corrected, and either its the same company making it and spreading it out to different suppliers, or its a part that gets copied and its wrong to start with, and it goes on for years.

Yes and no. Obviously, good food helps. But chain restaurants are mostly about name recognition and selling a known, comfortable quality and quantity. Many popular chain restaurants have lower-quality if not crap food. They succeed on advertising, branding, and fear-of-the-unknown.

I was in restaurant/bar biz. It’s very hard for a place that has noticeably superior food or drink to get noticed in an environment dominated by the chains. That’s why the chains are chains.

But I don’t disagree that food food helps.

Remember the famous "Wow!" signal detected by radio telescopes back in 1977 as part of SETI scanning? A new analysis came out last week or so, applying modern signal analysis to the old data. They were able to narrow down the uncertainty in location, getting a tighter fix on possible sources.

There are two regions it could've come from. Declination was fixed, but they radio dishes used two feedhorns, a little under 3m apart in right ascension. There was a reason for this. And they didn't log which horn the short Wow! signal came in on, so that means to possible locations. This new analysis narrowed down each region.

They definitely ruled out terrestrial sources once and for all. It was something interstellar. Their leading theory now is a type of natural hydrogen maser effect in a dust cloud.

However, there is a sun-like star about 1800 light years away in one of those regions, and still in it after the new analysis.

Went with my kids to look at rescuing a male yellow lab. We decided to take the dog because the whole time we were there the dog calculated the triangle created by my three kids, and maintained a position at the exact center of that shifting triangle.

He was a great dog. A couple of weeks later I quickly reached over him to grab a box on the top shelf. That dog hit the floor so fast that he bounced! We eventually realized that I (a big guy) could not ever reach my hand above my shoulder around the dog.

The guy I got him from was trying to keep the dog while his brother was going through a divorce.

I am not sure if the brother deserved one beating or two beatings. But I suspect it was probably two.

236 I had a car repair fail today. My local dealership wanted $699 to replace the 8 spark plugs on my old sequoia. BS. So I got the plugs and I was meticulous about everything. But when I started it up the check engine and the 'trac off' lights were on and the 4LO light was flashing.

Turns out I didn't reconnect the final thing... the sensor that I had uncapped from the air filter housing. Cripes.

Including that screw up it took me 3 hours. Pretty good exchange for $699.

238 For the longest time GM did not change the casting on its small block. Perchance does the block on the Sub have something that looks like an 8 (two looped holes parallel to the ground) in the bottom middle of the casting? If it does, those are for the original motor mounts.

Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 24, 2025 11:24 PM (5LCqK)

Yeah, there were some that used a single mount right under the harmonic balancer. This block is just like the '69 307 engine I have on a stand: three cast bosses on each side around the front core plug. The '63 to '82 style mounts I wound up using fit perfectly. Rock Auto does not show there being a left or right distinction for any of the truck line, for either '98 or '99.

My youngest daughter recently rescued a very cute Chihuahua/Terrier mix that was found on the loose and had heartworms. She also smiles, now that her life is happy.

My tiny pride flag, the only LGBTQ+ item in my room didn’t even make it to the first day of school before someone complained. The principal told me to take it down, despite being the GSA advisor and having a flag like this on my desk for the last ten years.

At the end of last year, all of the Safe Space stickers I worked so hard to get teachers around the school to adopt came down and now this. It’s enough to make me want to quit before the year even has started. 😞

1. The Ukrainians moved some troops around and managed to stop a couple of Russian breakthroughs. The Russians are regrouping and have started their counter-counter attacks.
2. The hotspot is in the southern zone, where the Russians are apparently trying to grab as much territory as possible, just in case peace breaks out.
3. There is much speculation that the Ukrainians will launch one last attack across the border, to grab some territory to trade in the future.

'GSA'...? Looked it up:

GSA clubs have been vitally important in shifting the attitudes of the current generation of young people, and we’re so proud of all the ways this work has shifted and deepened, particularly in the last decade since our First Edition of the GSA Advisor Handbook was initially published in 2011. This Second Edition of the GSA Advisor Handbook reflects the ways the LGBTQ+ community has grown and evolved.

We’re excited to share resources and tools that will support you – GSA club advisors – to create and sustain thriving GSAs in partnership with students, schools, and communities, as we move closer to our vision of trans and queer liberation.

284 83 Well, the long sad saga of my Suburban motor mounts is almost in the history books.

There's no easy way to do that. It's not very symmetrical, nor is there a good datum plane to measure to. If the frame were tweaked a half inch, it ought to be obvious, and the rig should have a vicious pull going down the road. It doesn't, and there are no signs of it every having been in a wreck.

Frankly, I don't care at this point. Get the damned thing back into service. It ran and drove fine for me for two years, until the transmission let go, and blew the engine as a consequence (cruise control made the engine over-rev, and took out a bearing). Good used engine, taken from a rolled truck that I was able to drive a little before parting it out, and the transmission overhauled by me. Nice Arizona 'burb, not a speck of rust on it.

Basically some scumbag was using stolen credit cards to buy Nazi uniforms. Illegal to just sell Nazi shit there, but its OK if its for the movies etc.

303 Bad ten days. I just wanted to finish going through the house. I cleaned the downstairs bathroom and washed the rarely used shower.

There was a bunch of Mom's Christmas towels and towels that will look good in the lower bathroom.

I'm almost thoroughly through the house. I want to submit pics of my junk drawer - OCD people would be proud.

I'm just going through the last pictures and frames and shredding the last bits of my brother and his spawn. Carthatic.

So much wall space.

We need more Art Threads with Amazon links.

Sorry, tired....

"MAJIC" was likely not real. That comes from the UFO/Rosewell lore that some secret group, called Majestic-12 was created to deal with it. And the clearance level was "MAJIC".

309 168 The new CB logo isn’t just a bad idea, it’s also ugly. What is that yellow-orange background supposed to represent? An egg yolk? Looks like snot oozing out of a sick person’s nose.

The font is ugly too. If they were trying to create an ugly, bland, shitty logo I’m not sure what they’d do differently.

You're supposed to use a marker or crayon to add your own messages to the background. It's the customer participation part of the new CB ad campaign. Once enough people hear of this it will really catch on... ;-)

And there's a lot of wall space for family pictures.

I just have to keep plodding forward.

My friend: "Wow, she must have been the hottest nun ever!"

But going through Mom's pictures, there were a lot of very attractive nuns. And when they were out of the convent, wow.

And I did find a picture of my late Aunt Pat when she was a girlin the 1930's. She looked exactly like the girl from 'Matilda.'

GSA clubs have been vitally important in shifting the attitudes of the current generation of young people, and we’re so proud of all the ways this work has shifted and deepened, particularly in the last decade since our First Edition of the GSA Advisor Handbook was initially published in 2011. The POLICE just totally kicked ass. Got off to a shaky start but then it was just an incredible ride.

368 I finally went back and viewed the contents. Question: How does The "spin of the yesteryear wheel landed on the year 1968" result in tunes from 1981? Never mind, Doof. You're a product of the US education system and it isn't your fault.
I don't remember "Boy" by the Manhattan Transfer at all, much less top 10, but I was dealing with a pregnant wife, so I could have missed it.
The Boy from New York City, however I do remember. No 1 in 1965.
I was stationed in NJ, spent a lot of time in NYC, listened to a lot of NYC radio - Seventy seven double-u ay bee see - and heard that song a lot. So I duck-duck-go'd (hate goo-gull) and sure enough... recorded by the Ad-Libs (who?) in 1964.
I was dating that pregnant wife who lived over in Longguh Island City at the time. BTW, contrary to expectations LIC is not way out on Longguh Island, but is a part of Queens borough, right across the East River from midtown.
Just to show how things can change in a half-century, at the time LIC was a bit of a dump, so she moved out to a nicer place in Jackson Heights. Jackson Heights is now something of a ghetto neighborhood, while LIC has become hip.

370 Ol' Cracker Barrel dude needs to call Robert Easton, the voice coach who used to come on Johnny Carson's show to 'splain us why different accents sound like they do and what causes 'em to sound that way. Ol' Dude in this vid is straight-up mush-mouth and y' can't understand half of what he's saying ... (rant over).
