Daily Tech News 24 August 2025

Top Story

  • Who are the 400 million people who made Threads the second most popular discussion platform after only Twitter? (Mashable)

The article doesn't seem to understand its own conclusion: That these are the same people who made The Big Bang Theory the most popular show on television: Bipedal sphex wasps.

In short, they don't exist, or at least not as recognisably individual human beings. They are trivially interchangeable corporate drones, the same people who made CB (formerly Cracker Barrel, the nation's foremost fine dining cheese experience) a household name for all the wrong reasons.

  • Speaking of households, I peeked out of mine this afternoon. It was a warm winter's day, so I essayed out to tackle the easiest part of the garden - the patch of lawn nearest the house - which was dusted with small weeds and could do with a trim before the season kicks off for real next month.

Even my smaller lawnmower (an 18V Bosch unit) could handle the task, though I did need to swap batteries at the midpoint because I had neglected to do so before putting it away for the winter.

On the other hand, that virus really did a number on me, and I also needed to recharge half-way through mowing less than half the lawn. It'll likely be weeks before I'm back to normal.

  • Also had a migraine. Just 'cause.

MRDIMM / MCRDIMM seems to be interchangeable though maybe slightly different implementations of the same idea: Pack two DIMMs worth of chips onto one physical DIMM and run it twice as fast.

Intel vs. AMD is a lot less interchangeable. These only work properly on Intel; on AMD chips they run, but not only do they fail to hit 12,800MHz, they don't work at any speed beyond the minimum of 3200MHz for DDR5.

24 a summary version of the 4chan article, from the end of the article:

[Preston Byrne, a First Amendment lawyer]: “None of my clients, including 4chan, will allow themselves to be deputized by a hostile foreign government which wants to censor its own people,” he wrote. “[British regulator] Ofcom has the power, if it wants, to get a court order and serve that order on UK-based ISPs to DNS block 4chan. That is entirely a domestic UK matter for Ofcom and the British courts to decide upon.”

Posted by: m at August 24, 2025 05:35 AM (aURVT)

25 and an example of US companies being deputized to censor foreign-based ISPs:

“several major U.S. companies — including Reddit, Bluesky, X, and Grindr — were forced to implement age verification systems that haphazardly blocked some or all access for users [in the UK] who didn’t want to hand over an ID or face scan”

38 Odd dream last night: I was slated to take a school bus to *work* for some reason. But nobody could tell me which bus, or where and what time to catch it. I was preparing to call the school board office, and bracing for a long frustrating session on hold (while listening to a symphonic arrangement of the Hawaii Five-O theme), when I woke up.

Apparently -- and Fen asked me about this -- the dreams I recall often revolve around *trying to find out something*, or a search for something. The search might only be for a clean bathroom, but I'm usually hunting something, a place or a fact.

Which tells me something. I'm just not sure what.

One of the hardest things about suicide is we tend to view it as coloring the whole life before it.

An easy example is DFW. He ultimately killed himself, so that vitiates a lot of his work, the idea goes.

No. He lost the fight one day. He won it for thousands of others.

66 @pixy, do you mow your lawn for the exercise or because it has to be done?

I've had a robot mower for about a year now. It does not require a wired perimeter and actually uses the RTK technology used by modern farmers to place crops within inches of the desired planting location. The company claims to be (IIRC) German (the support addresses have a .eu component) but the mower itself was built in Shenzhen, PRC.

It's a mammotion mower bought in 2024. It worked well for almost a year, but I have had recent problems resulting in 2 shipments to a repair facility. (Both on the company's dime and the 2nd repair ongoing.) I believe my issues with the mower (power-off in the middle of mowing) are temperature/battery related. In fairness, the company has been responsive to my complaints; OTOH, the issue wasn't fixed after the first repair.

WILD 🔴

Reform rabbis held a protest prayer against Israel at the opening of a rally attended by Rashida Tlaib.

And then, in what seemed like a divine coincidence, during the Torah reading of that very portion, they came to the promise of the Land of Israel to the people of Israel:

“Live in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will uphold the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.”

So what did they do?
They read the verses in a whisper, quickly, nervously, hoping no one will catch on.

You can’t make this up

eBay the cheapest computer that fits that description - heck, you can probably find one at Goodwill or Salvation Army. At the level of your needs, a computer is a commodity object.

Developing software for over forty years, I have gone through all stages of computer platforms, operating systems, performance, yada yada.

I use what the client gives me (pretty much anyone doing financial work requires people to use company assets). For personal, I went from pricey notebooks, to a cockpit of three 4k monitors (main being 43") powered by an AMD processor NUC or mini-PC since that gives far more bang for the buck and I can toss the computer cube in the vault when I leave the property.

So Sansepolcro is a navy flake? I did not know that.

One of these days I'll try something from Boswell's. Do they insist on your uploading an ID before you can buy online? Some retailers do now.

Like many other TV series for the last 30+ years, we liked BBT until is started getting slutty. We haven't finished watching numerous TV series because of this.

We both just shut it off at some point and say we've had enough.

Posted by: San Franpsycho at August 24, 2025 07:40 AM (RIvkX)

Trazadone turned him into a zombie and gave him muscle shakes. The first time he was on it for a few weeks eight years ago, he had minor hand tremors. Then he overdosed on it and the hand tremors became permanent, showing up most prominently when he's stressed. He wasn't on it "long enough" for Trazadone to be the definite cause, so his med manager put him on it this summer and now his hands and arms spasm. He's been off of it a few weeks and the muscle issues are not getting better.

TLDR: Trazadone is going on Pooky's "DO NOT PRESCRIBE" list.

192 Good morning. A couple people asked on the prayer thread yesterday how I am doing, but I had just popped on there while it was live for a little bit, as I had a church brunch to attend.

I am steadily improving. This really knocked the wind out of my sails. Finally saw the cardiologist on Friday, which was a huge disappointment. He had zero interest in me or my heart . . . going to find a new cardio tomorrow. In fact, he didn't even listen to my heart.
So thank you to any who have been praying, this has been an interesting experience , for sure. Just starting week 6 of recovery and finally feeling mostly like myself again.

200 And I bought one of those electric lawnmowers to try and keep up with it. The good news is that it fits well between the garden beds. The bad news is a 12" blade, so it takes forever on the rest of the yard. I may get a bigger one, as I keep losing the people that cut my grass.

203 It was a bit like that. I couldn't spot Jake at the back of the place. The weeds had grown up around the beds. I was trying to cut it, but with the oxygen issues, I couldn't spot only do part of it. I had a guy come out, cut it and take down a few branches. He said he would come back, but is now ghosting me. I still need to drag the branches out of the front yard. Really don't want to buy one of those electric chain saws but I may need to

204 I know China is putting in solar. They make the panels there. Are they covering farmland with them? Pretty sure they aren't. And they are hedging their bets with coal as it can be bought in advance and stored. Would be one thing if the West were hedging its bets, but they aren't. And wind is just dumb.

206 "Just looked up some Robot Lawnmowers, they are quite pricey and only go up to 2acres."

3 acres for the mammotion ones. Yeah, they ain't cheap. OTOH, they'll mow the lawn on schedule day or night and don't need gasoline (i.e. you don't need a fuel can to refuel your mower so it can mow).

It's your money and time as well as how you want to spend each of them. Getting some sun while mowing the lawn is a plus, after all.

The pole is a must. At least 75% of the time you will be able to stand upright, lay the saw on the wood and let gravity do the work; whether it's a limb above or on the ground.

AI Overview

There is no scientific evidence or common knowledge about bipedal sphex wasps, as all wasps, including sphex wasps, naturally possess six legs and are quadrupedal or hexapedal, not bipedal. The term likely stems from a misunderstanding or an inaccurate observation, as sphex wasps use their legs in coordinated ways for digging and moving their prey, but they always walk or run on at least four legs.
