Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Almost End of August Edition!![]() FUNdamentals Fundamentals and YOU - any progress to report? Range Data An issue that comes up from time to time is the collection and recording of range data. When I think of range data, I am mostly thinking of ballistic data and its relationship with atmospheric conditions. A bullet you shoot today does not behave the same as a bullet you will shoot tomorrow because the atmospheric conditions have most likely changed enough to affect the projectile behavior in flight. With me so far? If you're plinking for funsies at 100 yds this really doesn't matter. Shoot whatever ammunition you have and generally disregard the weather. However, longer distances require much greater consistency with ammunition velocities and a good understanding of how changes in atmospheric conditions effect the flight of a projectile. Some time ago I wrote the following for the Gun Thread and later incorporated it into the handout for the TXMoMe Shooting Clinic. Ballistics and Atmospheric Conditions Affecting Bullet Flight If you know the weight of the projectile and its velocity leaving the barrel, and certain atmospheric conditions affecting air density then you can compute a firing solution. Most generic range cards use a "standard" atmosphere, from which there are several to choose. I use the ICAO atmospheric model, which is; air temp 59 F, air pressure 29.92 Hg, 78% RH and an elevation of 0' or sea level. But what if you're not shooting in precisely these conditions? What if you take a trip from your home range near the beach and go hunting in the Colorado mountains? Since it's cumbersome to record and use all of that data, it can be combined into the single reference value Density Altitude (or DA) which is simply expressed as a variation in altitude to the standard column of air at sea level. If you have been faithfully recording data in a little notebook every time you shoot, you should have been including the DA, range to target, and the necessary elevation in MOA or mils for future reference. Density Altitude is published for local airports, and many online calculation tools exist, but you need data in real time as the DA changes throughout the day. If you're interested in this level of precision, I strongly recommend investing in a Kestrel Meter a compact weather instrument with an anemometer and which calculates DA based on your current conditions at the range. If you have been recording your data, all you need to do is look in your data book and find the last time you shot at the same distance with the same rifle and ammo, and dial the same elevation based on DA. It doesn't matter where on the planet you observed the data, if accurately measured, it will still be valid. If you are diligent, over time you will record enough data to cover most shooting situations. This is key information, people. If your ammo is consistent with regard to velocity, and over time you record its performance with respect to density altitude, you have all the information you need to engage targets on the first try. Pretty sure we have but in case you missed it, here it is again. Cigar of the Week ![]() The Gurkha Ghost is not a cigar for beginners. In fact, the one I fired up was tough even for me. I want to give cigars a fair shot and this one was bad enough that I will need to get a second one just to see if the first one was off in some way. The Ghost possesses a wrapper from Brazilian Maduro, and a Dominican binder and filler with a bit of Nicaraguan in there as well. It is rated as a Medium to Full flavored cigar. Yup, is all of that. It is a beautiful cigar, very dark and charcoal-like in color and having a nice solid feel to it. It has a 93 rating by Cigar Aficionado which is a great rating, but as mentioned, the one I had did not deserve it. After clipping the end, I tried something a friend suggested and gave the freshly cut end a sniff. Weird huh? But the sniffer picked up aromas of cocoa, leather and a strong woodiness. The fecal matter hit the oscillating air displacement system as soon as I lit the match. The first puffs were pepper - red pepper - with some tobacco thrown in. Ugh! The spice hits like a linebacker and a sip of iced scotch was necessary. Hell, it was mandatory! (But then when isn't this so?) After I recovered, it took a few minutes to taste the tobacco. There was an upside. Great smoke production, a soft draw, and an even burn. The ash held up and the aroma lingered. The downside? Pepper, spice and coffee. Burnt coffee. There is a sweetness there but it is so overshadowed that you almost have to think about it just to taste it. By the second third, the pepper remains but has mellowed a bit, although that may have been my tastebuds seared for life. The mellowing helped and for a few minutes there, it was a reasonable smoke, almost enjoyable. I didn't hang around for the last third. I'd had enough. As I said above, I will try the Ghurkha again, maybe at New Years. I'll let you know how it goes.Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Went to the range yesterday, just putting in my reps with the church gun. (PSA MicroDagger with red dot)
Again, gun is very accurate and reliable so far. But it's lightness means it's best to grip it good and to make sure the sights are on target before that trigger breaks. The gun is too light to be 'close'. Dunno why but the G19 is more forgiving and easier to shoot for me. But the PSA Micro is easier to carry, still holds 15 rounds with OEM mags, and I can avoid Glock Knuckle with it so far. Gubs! And cigars!
Diogenes thanks for that review. Sounds indeed like a second try is warranted. Did you have this Ghost resting in your humidor for a while? I now try to give any new-to-me stick a few weeks resting just to make sure it’s in proper condition before I try it. And one very common taste note that simply never registers at all for me is pepper. Black, red, white, whatever. Pepper is a yuuuge distinctive feature of much Nicaraguan leaf. But my admittedly mediocre palate (when it comes to cigars) just doesn’t sense it. Posted by: rhomboid at August 24, 2025 07:15 PM (Ek1Ps) 24
Good afternoon. Thanks again for the thread, weasel!
I managed to shoot myself into a last place finish in the silhouette match yesterday. The only upside was going 5 for 5 on the chicken silhouettes @ 200 meters. Even better, the chickens landed such I was able to see I was center punching them quite well. Anything over 200 meters, well, we won't discuss it. Though, I have identified the problem: Inconsistent setup behind the rifle. Could not get myself consistently squared up behind the rifle. I'm going to blame Alaska Cruise fatigue and lack of focus on fundamentals. Mostly the latter. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at August 24, 2025 07:15 PM (tT6L1) 25

We went to the range yesterday. After our trip to Champion Defense in South Carolina we had some questions about what happened to our zero. Because the locking turret for elevation did not lock. The turrets on the scope are supposed to lock and require you to pull up on the outer ring to turn. The windage turret did just that. Elevation turned regardless.
I thought this meant that it was not actually adjusting the elevation when turned while in the lower position. This turned out not to be so. It was off a hair in how it was supposed to seat, so it turned in the lower or upper position. I loosened the locking piece and reseated it, it works as designed now. But it also meant our previous zero was still mostly good. We went to a 100 yard range and rechecked it with srta blaster's rifle. She shoots it really well. Way better than me. Its zeroed at 100. Looking forward to applying weasel ballistics data as presented above in Texas. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at August 24, 2025 07:27 PM (RoO7G) 52

The Howa 1500 APC rifle did give us a little grief - the one magazine it came with had seemed a little weak in spring. It gave up the ghost and settled into a habit of just not feeding the next round. This is sub-optimal operation. So a new 5 rd and 10 rd on the way. Pricy for the Howa's, since they seem to only have one manufactorer.

Ammo creep is making itself felt after adding the .357/.38 lever gun to the mix. One new gun, two new calibers!
The range we go to charges $25/shooter to shoot unless you buy their ammo. Last time we went they were okay with just buying a box of their ammo, didn't care if your brought your own, too. We need .308 and bought it. They asked if we had our own and answered we brought .357 so they were going to ring up $50 for range time. Instead bought a box of .357 for $42. Did find a better technique for loading it through the side gate. I have seen on the Internet so I know that it is true that the manufacturer uses the same spring for the 20 inch, 18 inch, and 16 inch barrels. Making it way over-spring for the carbine length. The fix is to cut off 13 or so coils. Haven't gotten up the will to do that yet. But that should make it easier to load. Took the CC9 and PPK to the range this weekend. I put 50 rounds through each of them. I strained a ligament in my right arm. Shooting the CC9 one handed tired out my right arm quickly, especially when shooting with defense rounds. Shooting the PPK after the CC9 felt like shooting a .22 by comparison. Shooting one handed w/ the PPK was easier. It won't win any marksmanship awards thanks to the sights, though. The CC9 comes out ahead in that department.

I've been a bit house bound this week so I've been reading about shooting. ("Those who can't do, read.")
For the hand loaders in the group, especially with mil-surp bolt action rifles, do a search on C. E. Harris The Load. He wrote the piece about using a standard charge of Red Dot powder in 30 caliber rifles and using, mostly, cast bullets. Supposed to be accurate to at least a hundred yards and decent out to 200. And they work well with the original iron sights once adjusted for the lower power loads. I like the whole idea. It would make it more comfortable shooting my old battle rifles, less recoil. Saves money. You can get over 500 charges out of a pound of Red Dot. You learn ways to lube cast bullets. (I like the Lee tumble lube method.) And cast bullets are a lot cheaper than jacketed or can be cast yourself. The piece was written in the early 90s and the prices he mentioned are the stuff of distant dreams now. One other aspect I like is it can be done with the simplest reloading tools: a scoop, hand press, and a tub for the lube. Any set of basic dies, or the whack-a-mole type will do the job. It worth the read. Posted by: JTB at August 24, 2025 07:44 PM (yTvNw) 73
One way to diminish the caliber creep per gun is to add more guns in the same caliber. Need a .357 revolver to add to the mix.
Have been mulling it over - I figured a SAA clone would be the thing, but I hate the sights. Modern sights on an SAA, that would be nice. Sees Ruger Redhawk. That's...a look. Still noodling it. Hi rhomboid, The Harris piece is just an 8 page article but it gives all the info needed. BTW, if you are in the northern Virginia area. Do you have any need for a Lee hand press, the nutcracker style, or a Lee turret press. I'm thinning out the herd and would like to find them a good home. All free. Duty day this week again was busy, and the first really hot day of the year, so didn’t pull a trigger.
Had a Navy crew doing their small arms training on one of the ranges, as always asked them which ship. Forget the name, but it’s an LCS (Little Crappy Ship). As always with those crews, when they tell me I say “Oh, I’m sorry!”. To which, without exception to date, the response is “yeah”, with smiles and eye-rolls. This time I softened the blow with “at leas you’re not burning regularly, like the amphibious guys”. Which brought laughter. Posted by: rhomboid at August 24, 2025 08:30 PM (Ek1Ps) 148

Regarding Normandy, which we visited in 2022, the thing that amazed me was the craters left over from the naval bombardment ahead of the landings. They're covered in grass now, and there are walkways for visitors to use to avoid them, but it's incredible to think of what kind of projectile/explosive combo can dig a crater that deep and wide.

Last time I recorded anything in a data book was over 30 years ago. That book has gone the way of the dodo. It had the info on reloads that I used, with powder I don't remember, how it compared to regular 7.62 military surplus ammo, along with scope settings I don't remember. Any leftover reloads if they exist are in unmarked boxes I don't remember. I think the phrase is ass fucked with sand. The upside is a get to do it all over again.

One of the guys I hunt with is, by reason of glaucoma and cataracts, becoming a left eye shooter. Took him to the range last fall and he couldn’t see the Red Bull at 30 yards through a scope with his right ( dominant) eye. He could see it through his left. I buy cigars through the ‘make me an offer’ gimmick at cigars international. I make dogshit offers, no more than half retail selling price or a little higher for a great smoke. You’ll be surprised how often those offers get accepted.
Posted by: Elric the Bladiest Blade === Cool. Learned something today! I might have to try that too. It also tells you what their profit margin is. They stopped the Cigar Fu specials. A couple years back they aquired a competitor (Thompson I think) who had a different product line. They dumped sll the stuff they didn't continue on Cigar Fu for $40 a box. I kept buying every couple of days until I got a dud (machine rolled but hand wrapped). Got a bunch of PDR lines (a brand I liked a lot), an Aganorsa, Monte and a couple other premiums.
