48 A first-rate Roman bath had at least three main areas... the caldarium (hot), the frigidariums (cold) and the tepidarium (warm). The tepidarium would usually be the central room. From there you could go to the hot soak or the cold plunge, as the mood struck you, then return to the tepidarium to recover.

Those Romans took their baths seriously.

Whilst I would agree personally, I must say "No!" if we want any peace on the Thread. Sprinkle some high heels amongst them, and the 'ettes will bust loose with opinions on Manolos vs. J. Choos vs. Louboutins, how well the shoe is accoutrementing the outfit, color choices with color names no 'ron has ever heard of, etc., etc.

IOW, it will become a Fashion Thread, and not an Art Thread, and it will get out of control, and we'll be lucky to live through it.

Oxford Academic - by S Betzer · 2010, The painting was heralded by critics for its reflection of Chassériau's 'natural abilities', a picture in which the artist therefore emerged as himself.

AI - The quote describing a painting by Théodore Chassériau as reflecting his "natural abilities," comes from a 2010 article by scholar Sarah Betzer about Chassériau's 1853 masterpiece, The Tepidarium.

About the painting: The Tepidarium
Subject: Inspired by the artist's 1840 trip to Pompeii, the large canvas depicts a group of women in the warm-air room of a Roman bathhouse as they dry themselves.
Significance: Betzer writes that the painting, which took Chassériau 13 years to complete, was heralded by critics upon its completion as a powerful display of his artistic identity.
Context: The painting is known for its blend of classical and erotic themes, connecting antiquity with the female nude, and is now housed in the Musée d'Orsay.

About the scholar: Sarah Betzer
Affiliation: Sarah Betzer is a professor of art history at the University of Virginia.

'12th Street Gym Is Great, But It Used To Be The Shvitz'
November 19, 2014 | by Ron Avery

It began, "Those svelte leotard-clad young women and muscle-building males at the 12th Street Gym are probably unaware that Center City’s most active workout venue was once filled with bald, paunchy, old guys who rarely touched a barbell. Until the mid-1980s the place was known as Camac Baths, the most modern and extensive of several such privately-owned Eastern European-style shvitzbads (sweat baths) in the city. Camac was the most popular of all of the baths among Jewish men, who simply called the place “the Shvitz.”

======

Tariffs may increase some costs to consumers (importers have eaten a lot of the costs, shielding consumers, to remain competitive), but they have an overall deflationary effect.

People call all price increases inflation, but if there are overall price increases without an increase in monetary supply, it actually decreases demand, which has a small deflationary effect.

In short, tariffs may increase the price of some goods (wholesale importer prices which may get passed onto the final retail prices), but they are ultimately not a huge factor in inflation, and if they do have an effect, it's, in the aggregate, deflationary.

Every economist interviewed by newspapers said the opposite for months, by the way. I'm sure their takes on other issues are great, though.

========
To be fair, most economists have not been actually trained on useful employment of tariffs for a very long time. The last time a major trade kerfluffle happened was in the 80's to the early 90's with Japan. And that was the last you heard of how foreign countries had much higher tariffs on US goods than the US did on theirs. Not to mention trade barriers of various sorts.

Asian countries led the charge using modern day mercantilism to generate huge trade surpluses that could be used to buy raw materials across the world while concentrating on exporting those goods to the US for dollar revenue.

Wall Street liked this financialization of the world economy as did the Nat Sec folks--they reasoned trade would ensure friendly relations, Wall Street got to skim their vig from the currency and investment flows in and out of the US, and Nat Sec folks thought sanctions and access to Swift could tame the world.

It's still just an interesting look at the thoughtless groupthink that happens amongst the supposed credentialed.

Someone said that tariffs were inflationary. No one bothered to even think about what tariffs or inflation were or how they could connect. They just repeated the assumed wisdom from a high priest (assuming even it was a high priest, like Powell, who started it and not just some rando in a po-dunk university looking for likes on Twitter) without question.

I mean, our side is pretty distrustful of "experts" by this point, but I remember the handwringing I was seeing even here about inflation and tariffs. It was a minority voice, but it was there. "I heard," not "I thought."

More a case of people forgetting what they already know when presented with an issue that's framed in a different way than expected. It's very common in the classroom environment, assuming there's a good prof at the front.

For example, looking at price level rises and not thinking there are factors that impact them without being inflationary.

Land and property law due to feudalism's excesses begat common law and the odd rare statute. Desire to protect property from rapacious kings and aristos led inevitably to legal constraints placed on them which in turn led to the rule of law over power.

Monetary inflation is something they don’t want the rubes to figure out. Stealing half your wealth every 10 or 20 years (be sure to pay tax on your “gains” suckah!) is not a prescription for confidence.

Also note well the Left in their pre-mortem and post-mortem analysis settled on “You’ve never had it so good” and “Inflation is worse in other countries!!”

They have no idea the US government exports monetary inflation, due to the fact the USD is a “reserve” currency. They also have no idea $38 trillion in the whole is a privilege not allowed for other countries.

As usual the whole thing will collapse under a mass of inconsistencies and contradictions.

“Nobody could have seen this coming!”

265 Late to the thread. Damn errands get in the way sometimes.

I like the tableau scene and how each figure is individual. The colors reflect the closed, warm chamber contrasting with the bright daylight casting rays on a few of the women. The poses he used are also very feminine and languid, relaxed and able to express their body's freedom. For all the size of the large chamber, it is an intimate setting.

And, of course, boobs! I'm not above looking at each pair of tits to see if they are as individual as each model.

What a shame the artist died so young.

Cheney famously said “Deficits don’t matter” with respect to elections, although a lot of people seem to take that in a more expansive definition.

Part of it is that people are solipsistic--they value their interests and discount whether it hurts other people. For example, giving NFL or any other sportsball team public subsidies for stadiums, etc. means that public money subsidizes billionaires while being totally subject to that billionaire suddenly deciding to move the team leaving the community high and dry. These owners and fans voting for bond issues privatize the gains and socialize the losses.

College sportsball means that universities spend scarce dollars to prop up sports at the expense of education--only about a dozen sports programs actually make money for example. Probably less after the whole debacle of NIL.

Happens on a small scale too--e.g. golf widows, hobbyists so extreme that family time disappears, et

We are always the worst judges of our own behavior and how it affects others.

329 Taylor Swift is gross.

How many men have screwed her? How much jizz has she taken in? If I were a man, no matter how beautiful, talented and rich she is, I would not want to be another visitor to that cave.

One would think an NFL star could do better than sloppy seconds of 50 guys.

330 Land and property law due to feudalism's excesses begat common law and the odd rare statute. Desire to protect property from rapacious kings and aristos led inevitably to legal constraints placed on them which in turn led to the rule of law over power.

France with the Merovingian (and later Bourbon) dynasties at the time turned instead into formalizing the absolute reign of kings over laws.
Posted by: whig at August 27, 2025 10:35 AM (ctrM5)

In a property law class I took a while back, I was a bit surprised to hear at the beginning the Prof saying "In the English speaking world, all Property Law begins in 1066."

When William came in, he (by decree) wiped out all existing property laws and norms that had existed before him, and rewrote the entire system himself. As you note, later common law developed to ameliorate some of the harshness of William's law.
One of the key points of William's law was that there were no longer any "common" lands. Every square foot had to be owned by someone, so it could be taxed. If no one claimed it, then the State owned it.

And speaking of football players, take a look at Gisele Bucdchen’s love life before and after her marriage to Brady. She makes Swift look like a nun.

Yes and no. Even after the Conquest, freeholds were common as well as common land. It was one of the peculiar weaknesses of the English Crown that the King did not have titular ownership of all surveyed and seated lands. Instead, you got a mishmash of 1000 years of property titles which still exists today. And carried over to the New World in abbreviated fashion. King had control but not title to much of this land leaving Kings of England with much less land revenue than their cousins in France. Thus, England modernized its taxation laws and the Exchequer became an important institution earlier than in other monarchies.

From wiki,

"Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or to suppress the rebellion."

"WHEREAS certain persons in the state of Arkansas, individually and in unlawful assemblages, combinations, and conspiracies, have willfully obstructed the enforcement of orders of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas with respect to matters relating to enrollment and attendance at public schools, particularly at Central High School, located in Little Rock School District, Little Rock, Arkansas; and

"WHEREAS such willful obstruction of justice hinders the execution of the laws of that State and of the United States, and makes it impracticable to enforce such laws by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings; and

"WHEREAS such obstruction of justice constitutes a denial of the equal protection of the laws secured by the Constitution of the United States and impedes the course of justice under those laws"

369 BTW, the same rationale will apply regarding sanctuary cities etc. that refuse to abide by federal immigration law and Trump has already signed a proclamation regarding an immigration emergency.

When localities and states refuse to apply federal law, then the federales can come in to enforce it and federalize the organized militia of a state to help do that.
