114 Interesting concept of the little child's face behind the Medusa mask. (I think there are snakes as part of the mask.) The idealized but natural skin tones contrast with the dead appearance of the mask. Part of the intrigue in the image is the boy's unsmiling face.

Gerome usually has tons of exacting detail in his paintings but this one is simpler, less involved. The mask and cloak center the face. It keeps all the attention on the child's expression. It's hard to look away. The audience is bound to come up with stories about the child and the occasion.

Really? You need to spell out in detail how pays a lower interest rate benefits someone vs paying a higher rate?

But in a DC court that will be good enough to get her job reinstated of course.

Same pattern as the past 7 months.

District court sides with her, grants TRO and then PI. Immediate appeal upon the PI following malicious compliance that keeps Cook from actually getting into the building during the TRO. Appeals stays the PI. The DC Circuit is desperate to keep Humphrey's Executor in place, so they'll end up siding with the administration saying that Cook's firing doesn't apply to it.

It's what happened to Wilcox. Wilcox got talked into dropping his lawsuit to keep his job because SCOTUS would have nuked Humphrey's.

Pretty much true of Euroland in general and we are getting the same faux aristocracy ourselves. I see people even here criticizing where people go to eat, what they say, where they went to school, what job they have, what they like, how they say it, and so on. All done to get a one up on someone else.

That, in part, is why Christianity is hard for a lot of people in application--it requires a humble heart, a servant mentality, and a rejection of pride.

There but for the goodness of the Lord goeth I is a pretty powerful acid on individual pride.

Posted by: polynikes
====
To be fair, Vance was taken under the wing of Peter Thiel and his investment funds. Vance got to Yale by himself largely--he got rich via Peter Thiel--not from entrepreneurship.

Trump himself benefited from his father's wealth to serve as a starter fund. Becoming a billionaire mogul was from DJT's own actions to his credit as an entrepreneur.

Trump from his family, had enough money that he could have sat on his ass and been a trust fund baby type. There was more than enough wealth for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life on invested inheritance. He chose otherwise.

A lot of trust fund types do not and either sink into decadence or worse--try to make society worse by their misbegotten 'guilt' toward criminals, illegals, communists, and their patent snobbery toward the strivers trying to self improve. Fabian socialists was the UK term. Limousine liberals is the US term.

You may disagree with interpretations of the facts but not the facts themselves. What I said were facts. The easiest way to rise is grab ahold of the coattails of someone richer and more powerful. That is why Ivy League has essentially served as a matchmaker service.

E.g. the Bushes got their entree into wealth and power via the Rockefellers patronage. One of the Bushes back in the WWI era became an associate of JD Rockefeller's oil business. That led to investments in it and other places leading up to Prescott Bush becoming a senator from CT (which required wealth at the time and connections). From there--Zapata Oil curiously appeared to have significant patronage from the CIA with operations in many troubled areas, and so it goes.

We do have a de facto ruling class and education is one of the ways that the ruling class cements itself into positions of wealth and power. Along with control of capital aka banking, hedge funds, etc.

Best bet for an up and comer with nothing is to establish connections via some activity so that those connections can open doors that would otherwise be shut.

Because it's not true. The brand new world of bitcoin is creating thousands of new, young wealthy people. That's just one industry. The world of AI is going to create thousands more.

Politics is littered with younger people from all kinds of backgrounds. This has happened every generation since the founding of the country.

Yes, there is a moneyed class, there has also been one of them since the start of the country. And then a lot of them fade and new wealth comes up. Take a trip to Newport sometime and look at the mansions of the uber wealthy of the early 20th century. They are all museums now.

As Jimmy Cliff said, you can get it if you really want but you must try, try and try, you'll succeed at last.

275 Best bet for an up and comer with nothing is to establish connections via some activity so that those connections can open doors that would otherwise be shut.

...physical, moist, and vigorous connections.

The way you presented it implied Vance didn’t contribute to his rise or his success and it was only because of luck to be mentored by a successful benefactor.

It is the way of the world and always has been. The best business ideas, the best inventions, the best examples of academic prowess do not necessarily win the race.

The name of the game has always been connections along with later demonstrated competence. An incompetent rising elite member usually self destructs but a good one is smart enough to do what Bismarck said, "The statesman's task is to hear God's footsteps marching through history, and to try and catch on to His coattails as He marches past. "

so jarring to see that nonsense in such a charming locale

Good chance he's the next gov of Ohio, though. I think he was welcomed into politics, but stepped on his own dick with some really dumb comments about American workers.

You read into that something that I did not say. I was not Vance's boss at Thiel's fund and I suspect neither you nor I could ever get a true account of how he did etc. I do know connections with Thiel also led to adequate funding for Vance to run for the Senate.

It simply is--not a moral judgment, not a slam on Vance because after all, he had to get to Yale in the first place and stay in it despite the odds from his background. Same as Clarence Thomas, he saw his chances and took them.

But as I said, connections matter---they always have and always will in any human society.

290 Every single political and economic development in my lifetime has been in the same direction... concentration of ALL power in the hands of the ruling class. It's not a coincidence. The goal is feudalism. Will these plans be foiled? Perhaps. But it's not looking very likely at all.

Vivek killed his national political career when he popped off with that weird rant about how he hated American Cheerleaders and H1B imports were way better at American jobs than actual Americans were. The moment that happened everyone in Trump's campaign realized he was political poison and quietly ussured him off the stage.

Enfant avec un masque
Léon Gérôme

While it's a beautiful painting, the toddler is exhausted. The adult mask is barely balanced on the child's head with the string draped beneath its chin. It must have been uncomfortable to maintain the pose.

No, I wouldn't hang the painting. I'm not sure what it was trying to depict, but there's a certain sadness in the artist's power on display, and I feel for the tiny child.

Interesting artist. Thanks.
