Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Variety: Disney Seeks Original IP Which Will Appeal to Young MenWait wait wait. You spent $4 billion on Marvel broaden the female-skewing Disney audience to include young men. You immediately then spent $4.05 billion to acquire Star Wars (and Indiana Jones) to broaden the largely-female Disney audience to include young men. Then you turned both of those franchises into female-skewing Disney Princess brands, and men stopped paying to see these movies. And now Disney says: Hey, we need an original IP that will appeal to young men. (Which, if it succeeds (which is doubtful), we will immediately then turn into another female-skewing Disney princess brand.) This is like the left whining "We need our own Joe Rogan." You had your own Joe Rogan. He was named Joe Rogan. But now Disney says we need our own Joe Rogan demographic IP, because the sci-fi intergalactic war and sci-fi single-battle fighting IPs are now Girl Properties.Disney's Boy Trouble: Studio Seeks Original IP to Win Back Gen-Z Men Amid Marvel, Lucasfilm StrugglesMany of us -- who are young (or young-at-heart) males ourselves -- have warned that we would stop seeing these movies if they continued insisting they should be Disney Princess movies. We were called sexist, racist trolls (who only represented a tiny fraction of the audience). And now, with Marvel in free fall and Star Wars not even producing movies any longer, Variety says we were right. (Without, you know, actually admitting that we were right.) Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty aren't the only ones looking for a prince. Leadership at Walt Disney Studios has been pressing Hollywood creatives in recent months, multiple sources tell Variety, for movies that will bring young men back to the brand in a meaningful way. "Young men" is defined here by sources as ages 13-28, aka Gen Z. First, duh. Every film studio is looking for better ways to convert young audiences into habitual moviegoers. Numerous studies show that Gen Z men in particular are a lonely, gaming-obsessed group who were hampered in their formative years by COVID-19 lockdowns -- not the easiest segment to grasp. The amount of pure hatred the Gaslight Media pours on straight boys and men is almost Nazi-level. But what's surprising producers, writers and other partners in the larger industry is that Disney has been calling for original concepts to lure the demo back to the movies.LOL. Here's an idea: Make an Indiana Jones movie -- stay with me -- in which Indiana Jones is the actual hero. No, no, that's too simple. Disney needs to create an original IP. Something, you might have noticed, they haven't even bothered trying for a decade. Woah, global adventures and treasure hunts? You mean, exactly like Indiana Jones? Your idea of "original IP" doesn't track with my own. Perfect. Daria sounds like the perfect liberal woman to conjure up an "original IP" that appeals to young conservative-tilting men. Concurrent to Greenbaum's hire, the corporation bought a $1.5 billion equity stake in gaming juggernaut "Fortnite," which will incorporate Disney's iconic stable of characters. Two sources say Disney does not, however, enjoy movie rights to "Fortnite" itself, which would seem a no-brainer in luring Gen Z to theaters.Well Fortnite certainly would be an "original IP." I mean, it's been around for seven years and you want to pack it full of old Disney characters, but I guess that's "original" by Disney standards. Yes, Disney was the un-refuted king of the box office last year. It will win again this year, with two films potentially crossing the $1 billion mark ("Avatar: Fire and Ash" and "Zootopia 2").So much original IP! ... Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed as much on a quarterly earnings call this month, saying his film group won't favor existing IP over original material. The priority, Iger said, "is to put out great movies."LOL. That sounds as reasonable a goal as Disney suddenly able to create its own "original IP" that will appeal to straight men. It's a flop. Just say so. It will bring in less money that Captain America: Brave New World, which is already recognized as a flop. That's despite good reviews, a promising opening weekend and the full attention of Marvel czar Kevin Feige. "Star Wars" has not produced a film in seven years (a big-screen adaptation of Disney+ hit "The Mandalorian" is coming next year). ... "I never thought I'd say it," the exec muses about the Magic Kingdom's boy troubles despite its gem box of iconic IP, "but it looks like Disney is going to have to start trying."Disney? Trying? Now we're really in science-fiction territory. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Indiana Jones itself was questionably original; the three movies were remakes of 1920s-40s adventure serials. They're set in the 1930s for a reason.

======= It might have cost less money than Brave New World which went through a lot more reshoots. Maybe. Which might allow F4 to come close to breaking even at theaters in an environment where Disney has cannibalized its home video revenue stream in favor of streaming which is meant to buoy the costs of massively expensive shows. And that's why Disney greenlights films: to maybe make a small profit! Posted by: TheJamesMadison, searching for thrills with John Frankenheimer at August 22, 2025 04:25 PM (GBKbO) 16

But Lucas was definitely more hands off of Empire than he was on Return. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, searching for thrills with John Frankenheimer at August 22, 2025 04:36 PM (GBKbO) Teamwork makes the dream work ! Posted by: runner at August 22, 2025 04:38 PM (g47mK) 89

The priority, Iger said, "is to put out great movies."
That should have always been the priority, since that's where the money comes from. Disney chose another path and now they're struggling to get back on the right (read "profitable") one because they're so lost they don't even know where the hell they are. Might have helped if they hadn't burned the map because it was "mansplaining" the territory to them. Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at August 22, 2025 04:41 PM (lUFok) 99

It's going to be a pointless exercise even beyond the reasons already stated by Ace. Writers in Hollywood have all been taught to write coming from the "how do I make this inclusive?" viewpoint dominating everything else, especially story.
If this has any prayer of working, they need to find writers from older generations and/or outside Hollywood. Neither of which is going to happen. Posted by: can of spam at August 22, 2025 04:43 PM (7oNMO) 105

Variety: Disney Seeks Original IP Which Will Appeal to Young Men
—Ace Warhammer by Disney? We could have a dour but well meaning Primarch who obviously has space-daddy issues crashes on an unexplored world and is followed around by a dumb but well meaning Orgyn happy to finally see another abhuman. After they have an argument the two separate, but just as things look dark for our Primarch the Orgyn shows up and eats the heretiks that were about to ambush him. The two then save a Sister of Battle from Slaaneshi cultists and the movie ends on a happy song as the Sister of Battle uses a Heavy Flamer on the captured heretics. This would hit all of Disney's favored notes... Conveniently (mostly) dead parents Strong female lead Dumb but nice side kick that likes to sing Learning the importance of friendship Flaming Sexually ambiguous perverts Posted by: 18-1 at August 22, 2025 04:46 PM (sKqQm) 123

>> Disney's Boy Trouble: Studio Seeks Original IP to Win Back Gen-Z Men Amid Marvel, Lucasfilm Struggles
Not to be trite, but f them. Once people show you what their true intent is, I am not certain how you ever forget that. Since the motive here is financial you can be assured their pining is for your dollars not anything else. Disney and Marvel had a genuine audience attracted to their characters because they identified with them. They took that trust, and curiously then proceeded to tell you what a bad person you were for not only believing in those characters values, but how Neanderthal you were for not embracing the woke garbage they wanted to foist upon you. In that regard, they are a lot like liberal Democrats who want to use the auspices of government to force your behavior and steal any liberties you might enjoy if you oppose them. That’s more a casus belli than a pitch for my viewership or vote. YMMV Posted by: Marcus T, Lots of T at August 22, 2025 04:47 PM (Jm2uO) 131

I have a two-step guaranteed process to appeal to men for Disney:
Step 1: Fire all women with any management authority Step 2: Hire retired men without a college degree who live in states without an ocean beach to replace them. I was thinking, you know who is the most pernicious and destructive person in the world today? The head of HR at Blackrock. She hired the DEI hires at Blackrock. They then forced DEI on all the companies Blackrock invests in. E.g., she is directly responsible for the Cracker Barrel's recent $100 million valuation loss b/c Blackrock pushed them to DEI. I think I've told this story before, but circa 2007 I was part of a group that Disney wanted to hire to brainstorm and make male-friendly original IP video games which they could then turn into movies/TV/rides/whatever. The process went pretty far (we found office space that they leased and computers and furniture were ordered) but their board pulled the plug when the deal went up for final approval because they didn't think it was actually a problem that their audience demographics were very lopsided.

Fantastic Flop is a relevant example. The most heroic arcs are reserved for Invisible Woman and Female Silver Surfer. They get the most powerful scenes. Mr. Fantastic is not dynamic and is not the leader. Thing is almost nonexistent in the story. Torch’s role is to simp for Surfer. None of what I loved about these characters was present and if the movie had not been part of a double feature at the drive in I wouldn’t have even bothered.

I watched a video by David Wong on Luigi the Murder and the question of why the FNM lionizes people like him considering the FNM is made up of and controlled by the same sort of people Luigi killed.
David's theory is that they do it because they know "real change" can't come from an individual psycho killing a CEO and essentially its a pressure valve. There are two problems with this theory one this would mean they were signing up to have some of their own killed and two they've got no problem riling people up against them even if its ineffectual. And that's...kind of dumb. When has an elite group ever made propaganda encouraging people to hold them as villains?!? The answer is staring anyone in the face and Wong's dumb soft liberalism stops him from seeing it. The FNM stirs up anger against CEOs and "the rich" because they want to be able to get people angry enough to kill "bad" CEOs and the "bad rich". They don't see themselves as part of this group - just like the millionaire leftists I know demanding taxes on "the rich" but...not them. And this blindness then leads to problems like Luigi the Murderer going after some Obama loving Healthcare CEO instead of Elon Musk... Posted by: 18-1 at August 22, 2025 05:13 PM (sKqQm) 272

This is rich! They deliberately destroyed original IP's that young men made popular - Star Wars and Marvel - and even chided men when they voiced or posted their complaints about what Disney was doing to their favorite franchises. And what did they get for making their opinions known? They got called Incels, Mysogynists, Man-Babies and other Leftist playground names by Disney writers, then outright ignored by Disney. The studios also seem to go to great lengths to de-masculate many of the most manly characters in those franchises, such as Luke Skywalker and Thor.
So after ridiculing, attacking and then ignoring the men who MADE Star Wars and the MCU the box office gold mines they were, Disney did EVERYTHING to tell these men to Bugger Off. Therefore, we men now invite Disney to Bugger Off and Go Fuck Yourselves! Posted by: Tracy at August 22, 2025 06:02 PM (iWWCD) 322
