The Democrats Are Losing Voters All Over the Country as the GOP Steals Them Away

A new Insider Advantage poll finds Trump's approval surging -- except with the oldest voters.

Voters Not So Much
Posted on August 18, 2025

Survey conducted August 15-17; MOE 3.09%

What is your opinion of President Trump's Job Performance?

Approve: 54%

Disapprove: 44%

Undecided/ No Opinion: 2%

Analysis by InsiderAdvantage Pollster Matt Towery:

Donald Trump now has an advantage among every age group other than the most senior of voters. He has improved his numbers among African-Americans and Hispanic-Latinos. White voters are at a near record 64%. Voters under 65 years of age now approve of his job performance by wide margins. Only the nation's oldest voters disapprove of his job performance, which is consistent with our prior surveys. Overall, his approval numbers are surging upwards post-summit.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are losing voters by the millions:

Many blue states, like massive California, register voters by party while many red states, including Texas, do not, so the number of nationwide registered voters by party does not tell the full story. But in those 30 states with partisan voter registration, Democrats' eleven-point edge over Republicans on Election Day 2020 plummeted to just over six points in 2024, an alarming trend for Democrats.

"I don't want to say, 'The death cycle of the Democratic Party,' but there seems to be no end to this," Michael Pruser, director of data science for Decision Desk HQ, told the Times. "There is no silver lining or cavalry coming across the hill. This is month after month, year after year."

More trends paint a similarly dire picture for Democrats.

By 2024, the Republican party's share of new registered voters nationwide "had overtaken Democrats'," rising by nine points compared to 2018, the report details, while Democrats' fell by almost eight percent.

The shift from 2020 to 2024 was prevalent in the four swing states with partisan data available as well -- North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada.

Identifying the problem is likely to be far easier than fixing it.

Due to the makeup of Trump's new Republican Party coalition, achieved through gains across multiple demographics, Democrats are unable to go back to the well of recruitment of racial minorities to reverse their downward trajectory. The Times report reads:

For years, the left has relied on a sprawling network of nonprofits -- which solicit donations from people whose identities they need not disclose -- to register Black, Latino and younger voters. Though the groups are technically nonpartisan, the underlying assumption has been that most new voters registering would vote Democratic.

Mr. Trump upended that calculation with the inroads he made with working-class nonwhite voters.

Shane Goldmacher of the NYT tells Democrats the bad news.

Shane Goldmacher
@ShaneGoldmacher

NEW at NYT: The Democratic Party is facing a voter registration crisis in red, blue and battleground states alike -- losing ground to the GOP everywhere.

My deep dive into the numbers and what it reveals about the party's brand.

democratregistrationdown.jpg

30 states plus D.C. allow for partisan registration.

Between 2020 and 2024, Democrats lost 2.1 million voters in those states. GOP gained 2.4 million.

But those topline figures are just the start...

republicanregistrationup.jpg

By percentage, Democrats went from nearly an 11-point edge over GOP in 2020 to just over a 6-point edge in 2024.

Along the way, some states have flipped to GOP registration edge entirely.

Florida, of course.

But more big ones are likely coming...

In Pennsylvania, the quintessential battleground, Democrats had registration advantage of 517,310 among active voters in November 2020.

As of this summer: Only 53,303 voters.

In North Carolina, Republicans erased roughly 95 percent of the registration advantage that Democrats held in the fall of 2020 by this summer.

The Dem edge is less than 17,000 -- down from nearly 400,000 in 2020.

Some have dismissed registration as a lagging indicator in the past.

But in 2024 it proved prescient: Democratic weakness was concentrated where Trump was strongest, among men and younger voters.

youngvotersnyt.jpg

There are few better measurement's of a party's brand than who actively chooses to identify (and register) with it.

And fewer and fewer voters are choosing to become Democrats.

Check out this graphic of the trendline for new registrants since 2018.

trendlinenyt.jpg

We also have some takeaways on the findings.

This is perhaps the most stark one.

It turns out - for all of us that didn't live our entire lives in the Cold War ? We don't want to fight the Cold War forever. And after 9/11 ? We'd really not like to do all that shit that some still claim the Statue of Liberty Poem mandates we do.

well, unfortunately, the voters Trump poached from the Democrats are largely unlikely voters, who only come out to vote for Trump. The voters the Democrats poached from us are uptight liberal cosmpolitan NeverTrumpers, who are more disciplined voters, probably because they're all on the Federal tit one way or the other.

I think the only chance that the Dems retake the house is if they can steal their way into doing it. Mandami and AOC will be Dem locks just because the machine has so entrenched itself in those areas that there's no short-term way to remove the "fix". But Mandami and AOC aren't "the future" unless "the future" means all of the voting systems are permanently corrupted.

38 A LOT of registered democrats have changed to independent due to republican gerrymandering. It hinders MAGA efforts to dilute Dem votes when they can't track them!

That's a good possibility. My thoery is Dems in red states or districts have changed to Independent, but still vote Democratic. It's a safety thing and reduce potential harrasment. It's a different world at the moment. Ds are under attack.

I am not buying this. Mainly because of where it is coming from and who did the 'analysis'. No one should trust the NYT, and the agenda their rightwing corporate masters push. Nonsense about the 'Dems in Disarray' is exhausting.

The good part of this is in closed primaries - the true blue will have a greater voice than outsiders intent on 'bringing the revolution' faster.

I'd rather not hear about any of this. I am pretty sure those numbers in Florida are rigged too. Ain't no way a million people net gain to republicans. It isn't like that is reflecting in the actual election results.

I hope the denial we're seeing here is not reflective of the Democratic Party officials and elected leaders. If it is, we're in deep trouble.

When have we not been told the Democrats will win? I'm so old I remember when we were told Harris was going to win.

The left has been taking some serious hits, losing USAID and the network of NGOs they fed and ActBlue is a lot bigger than is being reported. Illegals are being shown the door. Republicans are finally waking up and realizing they can gerrymander too.

And it sure as hell doesn't hurt that Trump and his agenda are very popular. No guarantee that we will win in 2026 but the idea that Democrats are ahead is just wishcasting.

53 My sense the Panic was clearly evident in 2019, the president was cruising towards an easy re-election bid. The genuine, paid-for polling revealed epic percentage gains with “minority” voters, women, college educated vagina-americans, everybody historically considered reliable Democrats.

That’s why they went to DefCon 1 and pulled out all the stops for electoral fraud turned to eleven. Mr. Trump did not turn tail and surrender, against all odds he persevered and came back to a stunning re-re-election.

What is more stunning? His initial election, defeating the entire array of deep state and foreign actors employed by the shadowy alphabet agencies, the corrupt fake news agencies? Or his incredible come back after having endured everything they could throw at him? Nothing in American political history even comes close.

LBJ, the peanut farmer, the Clintons, Obooboo, and lastly, but not leastly, good ol' Joe from Scranton. All unmitigated disasters. Probably a few reasons.

1- Women tend to live longer than men, and tend to vote more Democrat.

2- More educated people tend to live longer, and vote more democrat (this correlates to wealth as well)

3- Older people may have grown up thinking decorum and civility were the norm, and Trump is an undignified outlier.

4- They may be worried about Medicare and Social Security, and know Dems will tax and spend whatever it takes to keep those programs afloat (or even expand them).

one of the biggest drives in "big time behind the scene" politics comes from the fear that National allegiance was the thing that caused the last 2 world wars. This was caused both by "nationalism" or belief and support to one's own country or culture to the exclusion of others, and the second part because such isolationist attitude cuts off trade and that hampers the international organizations from making good profits.
If you remember the bromide that "no two countries who have McDonald's restaurants have ever been at war" you see the basic outline

Soros' Open Society, and the WEF have this as some of the basic theories they operate around.
Nationalism, and Christianity celebrate the power of the individual, one for basis of power, and the other as a basic element of faith for salvation and communion with God.

Grit in the smoothly functioning cogs of internationalism, both.

If you smell the smoke
You don't need to be told
What you got to do

Yet, there's a certain breed

Running short on time
Still, they can't decide
But we already know

Same with “Christian Nationalist”. You are a Christian. You are a Nationalist. Nothing wrong per se with with either, nor in combination.

I think about this fairly often, especially for older Republican voters with TDS. I think at least a couple of things are going on. One is the near-worshipful attitude and beliefs they've had their entire lives about the government and other American institutions. PDT has laid bare the rot and it's freaking them out. They were happy to keep that nice shiny veneer in place, and are angry at the man who pulled it back. Shooting the messenger.

Two is that PDT is showing what a bunch of softcocks run the GOP. The Republicans have been running for decades on the very things PDT has delivered on in a few short years, all the while making excuses why they haven't. They're the WNBA and he's Caitlin Clark. Nobody likes it when their boys get shown up, and that's happened here bigly.

240 NY is nothing but a bunch of bought and paid for politicians propped up by a small cadre of rich donors. The AWFL’s love it as do the unions who get paid off to keep the ball rolling until it doesnt. They have the dirtiest electoral process in the country. Even California is envious. I really don’t see how they sustain it. They’re running out of budget magic and people to steal from. You don't fall for the Democrat's standard tactic: Fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The Dems have been working that angle on the Boomers since the 2012 campaign with a Paul Ryan lookalike pushing Granny over a cliff. The Dems ceaselessly screamed Republicans want to eliminate Medicare. Because it works to scare folks on Medicare. The latest tactic aimed at the Baby Boomers was the Destroying Democracy and Our Precious Norms junk. I don't get why it works, but the Dems must have had polling and focus group results that said it would on Boomers.

In short, the Dems worked to make as many Boomers as possible feel like victims. The go-to tactic of the Democrats. This move on the Boomers must have been driven by internal Dem knowledge they were not getting as many 18-26 voters as they expected. Where could they get more votes? They were maxxed-out on possible female voters. Appeal to men? No way. That would turn-off too many of their female voters. They were maxxed-out on blacks. They mis-calculated Hispanics.

Hillary led the "sluts and nuts" smear campaign against all of Bill's accusers, and "believe all women" went right out the window. I realized then that the Dems had zero integrity, and were nothing but a bunch of power-hungry liars and hypocrites. By the time 9/11 happened,I was already primed to flip.

Gen X got Carter and Reagan, Silents got Truman and Ike, Boomers got JFK, LBJ, Nixon. Millennials got Clinton, GWB and Z got Obama, Trump I, and Biden.

That leads to a lot of people seeking out news sources that are compatible with underlying ideology rather than objective news.

The Whig party collapsed after the 1850 Compromise--the Northern wing became more and more antislavery and the Southern wing vanished. So in the South, the young fire eaters won over their more moderate older pols in the Dem party and in the North, the Dem party bled support from the working class and religious due to constant attempts to placate slavery's spread.

The Republican party put General Fremont as their first candidate in 1856 in part because a lot of them used to be Whigs.

309 Curious that FL has lots of retired old people, yet is a red state. Maybe this is less about old people in general and more about regions that remain hard core Dem.

It is pretty much self selection. Those that want to move away from blue or swing states are more motivated to keep more of their stuff and gravitate to states like Florida and Texas where they can actually keep their stuff.

It bears repeating but just a short 15 years ago Florida was a swing state that usually voted democrat. obama won the state in 2008 with 50% of the vote. Trump won the state in 2024 with 56% of the vote.

15 years is a blink of the eye in the political shift of an entire state.

And short of going to one of the service academies, ROTC is one of the best scholarships available.in the country.

Pro Tip ... and this is simply real ... read a book. Read After Action Reports. Read WW II shit or Vietnam shit or the 'Stan shit.

The secret sauce to the United States Military isn't West Point or Annapolis or Colorado Springs.

As mentioned above, Pygmalion was the basis for My Fair Lady. Like most musicals, it depends on personal taste--in my case, I like it okay simply as an all ages elaborate big screen spectacle that Hollywood makes no more.

Posted by: whig at August 20, 2025 06:41 PM (ctrM5)

Sure, the Northern Whigs, with a bit of Free Soil and the Nativist Americans who were very strong at that time. But being a single issue party is a long term loser so they were able to mainstream most of them and lose the label of anti immigrant. After all most of the attacks came about over slavery opposition.

Most armies use junior officers for the tasks we use NCOs. Both sides at that level in the UKR war seem to have been creative at adjusting to the new kind of war. The upper echelon on the UKR side and a number on the Russian side have been terrible.

Those armies are so small they would get diluted out if expanded for a real conflict.

The calculation was, we’ve got a completely functional electoral cheat machine. Let’s use it, and dispense with antiquated notions that we give a flying fuck about anything or anybody.

That’s what was so disturbing at the time. Electoral suicide. But they were (obviously) completely crazy, OR, they had everything sewn up in perpetuity, and could do whatever they wanted. I wasn’t sure which one was correct.
