11 Not that this is the Christmas season, but I just loved this poem by the Englishman Gerard Manley Hopkins ( 1844-1889). He was a convert to Catholicism and became a Jesuit two years later . His superiors didn't favor his poetry and he, sadly, destroyed much of what he wrote. Thankfully, some poems survived..

Moonless darkness

Moonless darkness stands between.
Past, the Past, no more be seen!
But the Bethlehem- star may lead me
To the sight of him who freed me
From the self that I have been.
Make me pure, Lord; thou art holy:
Make me meek, Lord; thou wert lowly;
Now beginning, and alway;
Now begin, on Christmas Day.

17 It's been very busy and between Saturday and Sunday I have three services to do, one each at the senior care center, at the funeral home and at church. I'm also feeding little dogs at the home of a congregant who doest't live in this town and who is away and doing extra stray cat feeing duty for a friend who is going away. So, I was so happy on my way back from church to visit a lovely rose garden and I had such nice brief conversations with people there . One man had a shirt with John 3:16 on it and I thanked him for showing his faith. I said to another man who looked like he might be ( (Asian) Indian that it was a nice day and good to be out seeing beauty and he responded, "It's is important to take times too see beauty when we feel we are are on a treadmill of many things to do" I thought that was very wise. At the rose garden were some plants you could touch and feel and feel and yes, one plant did smell just like chocolate mint. I also saw a large yellow as well as a large orange butterfly. Thanks, God, for those blessings of nature and people .

47 Seems that more folks are noticing Moore's lack of true leadership abilities.

How can you say that? He received the Bronze Star (for being an officer). Admittedly, it was awarded during the waning days of the Biden Administration, ten years after he left the Army, after the Army had initially rejected the award... but he received it.

He's, basically, a modern day George Washington.

You are being more forgiving than I.

He knew that he was lying when he wrote that he had received a Bronze Star. There is no continuum here.

I think what makes "stolen valor" worse than the typical garden variety political bullshit is that Americans are perhaps uniquely predisposed to trusting military men who have revealed their character through bravery.

He tried to take advantage of that, and I find it disgusting.

Never. We had to earn them, usually as an end of tour award.

Some exceptional events got awards, like conning the ship out of a potential collision when the UNREP ship lost power with a CV on the other side. The CV's emergency breakaway pushed the bow of the oiler towards our port side. Took real skill to avoid swapping paint.

Marines were even more parsimonious with awards, since you were supposed to shine as a Marine.

104 Yesterday morning at the coffee shop, I ran into an old friend, an adjunct instructor at my old department whom I know is a Trump supporter. She's Armenian, with a charming "Russian"-like accent (occasionally she drops a definite article, as in "I went to department; no one was there"), and is fun to be around. (Also pretty hot, but she's married.) She says classes have already started for the fall, but she doesn't know if my last department, which was downstairs from hers, has actually made their planned move.

The momentous move, which I would have had to organize, was a big motivator in my deciding to retire. Hilarious if they haven't actually done it.

136 "It's stolen valor, but it's a line on a c.v. penned long ago, maybe overlooked"

No, you don't "inadvertently" add a Bronze Star to your record.

My highest award was a Navy Achievement Medal. Poor LCPL Meyers filed award recs in S-1 (Admin). I was doing a stint in S-3 Ops as SORTS handler and Schools NCO. I remember telling him (cue moron voice) "If I get a NAM I don't want it to be for paperwork". So stupid. My S-3 Officer wrote me up for tripling the number of Marines we had in schools. Training Courses like Squad Leaders Course, Mountain Leader, Sniper, Recon, SERE. We even had Jump School Quotas. All I did was spoon feed quotas to the line companies. I was a gunner for an LAV-25 and a section leader, 31st MEU-SOC, Somalia... but in hindsight? That was the most important thing I did in the military.

So, Meyers gets the rec and circular files it. Never occurred to me that Marine officers don't rec awards on a whim. Major McCoy wants to know why I haven't gotten the award. MAKES A SPECIAL FLIGHT FROM DC TO LEJEUNE to unfck whatever went wrong. Meyers stays true and takes the hit, doesn't rat me out. I'm out in the field, I miss the entire apocalypse THANK GOD. I could not have faced him and seen the disappointment in his eyes that I appeared so ungrateful and undeserving. And you know how these awards are presented - they make it sound like Western Civilization was hanging in the balance.

LCPL Meyers was rewarded for his unflinching loyalty as Hell raged around him - a bottle Jack Daniels every Friday for 3 months.
