Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Laughable

The UK is in a drought and the government is worried about water availability and is therefore pushing conservation. It's mostly stuff you would expect. Turn off the tap and don't let it leak. Be parsimonious with irrigation. Don't water your lawn. Take less time in the shower. Delete your data.

What's that, you say? Well, from the UK's National Drought Group:

Delete old emails and pictures as data centres require vast amounts of water to cool their systems.
Hilariously, this insane recommendation is in the section titled, "How To Save Water At Home." Last time I checked, I don't live in a datacenter. But even setting that aside, this is one of the most laughable recommendations I have ever seen. Even if it was enough water to make a difference in a drought, this would save not one drop.

Datacenter capacity exists. It's already built. The water cooling system - if the equipment is water cooled, which it often is - is already deployed. The only way that cooling system can use less water than it does today is if it either gets smaller (e.g., equipment is shut down and the cooling loops servicing it are drained) or if it gets more efficient so it needs less water to keep it cool (that is, it's replaced). It would take a truly staggering reduction in data consumption to result in shutdowns of that much equipment and it would probably just sit there idle for a while since it's already paid for and the owners will find a use for it.

But even that were to happen, it's still a stupid recommendation. First, most data aren't personal data anymore. Everyone's personal photos and E-Mails are a drop in the bucket compared to AI datasets and other large commercial data consumers. But set aside the laughable absurdity and the depth of the misunderstanding this recommendation reflects. Pretend it could matter. If we all get together and delete our family photos, we can shutter a couple of datacenters and avoid the water consumption. How much difference would it make?

Not much. First, "water-cooled" datacenters only use some water. "Liquid-cooled" is probably more accurate. Large-scale datacenter cooling loops have water and (usually) a lot of glycol, along with various additives and biocides. Exact ratios are usually trade secrets, but there is a fair amount of non-water in a "water-cooled" datacenter. But again, let's pretend there isn't. It's all water straight from the tap. How much water are we talking about?

Again, it's hard to say. It isn't one size fits all. But let's take an extreme case. The US Department of Energy's "El Capitan" supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the fastest system in the world, and came online late last year. It uses an elaborate - and big - water cooling system that requires, according to PC Magazine, nine million gallons of water "per day." That's how much cycles through it per day, not it's daily consumption or the size of its reservoir. These are closed systems. There are always losses - leaks, evaporation, etc. - but water doesn't just flow through the datacenter on its way down the drain. So let's make some very bad assumptions. Let's assume that "El Capitan" has a nine million gallon reservoir, and that reservoir gets fully consumed over the course of a year.

So that would mean that the datacenter requires nine million gallons of water per year to run - certainly overstating it, probably by at least an order of magnitude. Your average four-member British household uses 450 liters of water per day, which comes out to about 43,224 gallons per year. The nine million gallons that would be saved by shutting down the datacenter that holds the world's most powerful supercomputer would save the equivalent of about 208 average four-person households. Even if you can completely shutter a dozen "El Capitan"-sized datacenters thanks to deleting your pictures and E-Mails, you're saving much less water than a neighborhood in London uses up in a year.

It's one of the most laughably stupid things I have seen in a long time. It exposes the fundamental misunderstanding of policymakers. They don't know how anything works. Datacenter water usage, in aggregate, is non-trivial but encouraging people to delete their E-Mails and photos would do precisely nothing to curtail it, anyway. That stuff is small change in a world where AI is a thing. The only thing this recommendation is good for is a hearty laugh. Or deep contempt because no matter what, bureaucrats always find a way to recommend something you'll hate that also happens to be pointless.

I'm used to my own government publishing insane nonsense like this, so it's almost refreshing to see it come from somewhere else this time.

20 "Uses" is one of those terms that is heavily misused.

For most people, in this situation, they assume it means "consumes." That is, those 9 million gallons "per day" are something used up and lost, requiring a whole other 9 million the next day. As you point out, that isn't the case.

It's the same with "per day." When combined with "uses" it implies consumption.

Posted by: Inogame
------
Salt water is corrosive and avoided in most applications of cooling--especially computers as the consequences of an electrolyte leak inside a data center are staggering. I have a watercooled cpu--but as Mannix says, it is a closed loop losing virtually nothing in its loop over the last several years.

Power plants using the giant evaporative coolers are one of the biggest consumers of water and that is because they are open loop with the water literally becoming water vapor expelled from the facilities like a giant swamp cooler.

In relatively closed systems using surface water with sewage connections, household use is also minimal--as that water from showers, washing, and toilets gets cleaned and released back to the surface waters. Watering for landscaping, street cleaning, etc. are where urban water residential systems lose water. Not toilets, bathtubs, and showers--the primary reason urban areas promote low flo devices comes from the demand end--less capacity for sewage and water lines.

Well based systems are different again depending underground aquifers that require recharging.

There's also the issue that ACCESSING that data and deleting it likely burns more energy and produces more heat than just leaving it as unaccessed data.

So not only are they wrong about how data centers work, their advice would actually use more water. (Again, miniscule, but still the wrong advice.)

54 You've covered the closed cooling loop, circulating capacity. I think there are likely some other figures that go into running the chillers that remove heat from the cooling loops to another medium.

That other medium is likely some nearby reservoir or river, and you've no doubt seen the chillers of various sizes from nuke plant size to small modular units repeated like government projects.

Now that is not to say that that water is "used" up in the sense that it is gone. It simply absorbs the heat of vaporization from the cooling loop heat exchangers and goes into the atmosphere as vapor or is pumped backed in the reservoir or river as warmer water.

You'd likely have to know the amount of waste heat or estimate from chiller cooling capacity and temperature differences of the ins and outs of the river/reservoir water to back calculate amounts of water "used" or lost to evaporation in the chillers.

That would be your biggest "use" of water in these and similar operations.

The #1 cause of water shortages by far is the water companies (privatised and thoroughly asset-stripped) themselves. They lose an obscene amount of water through pipe leaks, because maintaining infrastructure is so much more difficult and costly (and so bad for profits and shareholder dividends) than telling the peasants to use less of the product that THEY PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR.

It's not about data storage. It's about data.

There is an underground movement in the UK to replace the rainbow and Palestinian flags being put up by the government with St George's Cross flags. And as soon as they are put up the UK government takes them down.

Why would the government take down their own flag? Same reason our government allowed statues of our founders and heroes to be torn down. Same reason they renamed our military bases. Same reason the tried to ram the 1619 crap down our throats.

It is literally right out of the communist playbook. Erase history and replace it with one that supports the narrative. We are in the process of pulling out of that nose dive. The UK and the rest of the EU are still spiraling into the ground.

It's done on ships all the time, monitoring the closed loop for salinity. That said, coast lines, at least Pacific coast lines, have seismic activity problems which could make such costly to implement, over the time tested method of just pumping cool seawater in and hot seawater out in a separate cooling loop that cools the first cooling loop.

When we lived in CT our town wouldn't pick up our trash from the curb one time and threatened to fine us because they saw "recyclables" in the trash can. They said if it happened one more time they would have to issue us a fine. Come to find out even when we separated all of our recycle stuff they had switched to single stream recycling because it was cheaper for the town. Turns out single stream recycling meant it all was going into the trash and nothing was getting recycled.

The kicker with that was you still had to separate your recycle stuff from the trash even after they admitted everything was going into the same trash pile.

167 136 I understand about not wanting to cool the hardware with salt water, but you could heat sink a closed loop in the ocean... or along a huge tunnel under it.

I suppose there is always risk of leaking which doesn't make it a good idea.

Posted by: Inogame

Ground loop closed heat pump systems are actually very efficient at heating and cooling as the temperature stays fairly constant below the frost line. Downside is the closed loops require a fair amount of land for the heat exchanging loops or you have to go deep with them.

Open loops with matched wells are easier if you have a place with topography and aquifers allow that. One is pumped out with the water used as coolant/heat and then pumped down into the other well. Another is to use a large reservoir like a pond to as the open loop or closed loop heat sink/source.

That being said, air heatpump units are increasingly efficient in ac/heat usage which usually makes them a cheaper choice in a lot of use cases.

We currently have 479 data centers listed, from 78 markets in United Kingdom (UK).

England has the large majority of them.

The UK has a growing number of data centers across various regions, including Yorkshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, the East Midlands, and the West Midlands. These areas are seeing significant investment in data center infrastructure due to factors like proximity to major population centers, availability of suitable land, and access to power and connectivity.

There's a fitness guru who legitimately understands and teaches fitness, but in the middle of a two hour interview urged his audience to tell AI everything about their goals and priorities and then regularly bounce new ideas off of AI so that AI could "hold them accountable" about whether their "new" thoughts were compatible with their "goals and priorities". I was aghast, not just because of the terrible things AI could do with this highly private info, but instead because this "normal" guru couldn't understand that he had just substituted AI for....God...that's the point of prayer, and a relationship with God--to search for what is important and ask for discernment from God as to what is truly important.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison
========
My guess is that you will have cabinet reshuffles first and Sir Keir will not serve out his full term as PM. The usual timeline for unpopular PM replacement is about 12-18 months before an election. Part of it is that Labour did not win many new votes--it went from 32 in the previous election to about 34 percent of the total vote in 2024. Instead, those unhappy with Torys which set a record for the smallest percentage of vote since 1830--less than 24 pct. That meant a lot of Tory voters abandoned the party for those on the left going to Liberal Democrats and Tory voters on the right going to Reform. Leaving a rump faction of Establishmentarians running the Tory party.

Thus, 66 percent of the UK population is not vested in Labour at all and some of that 34 percent of Labour voters in the last election are now regretting their vote. My guess if Labour continues to flounder, it may be supplanted by Liberal Democrats as the party on the left from defectors. As it did to the Liberals post WWI.

As always, it depends on the joint choices of millions of people making a choice for decline or redemption.

From afar, it is difficult to tell plus compared to earthquakes--social sciences are more educated guessing than predictive.

And there is also the Euro mainland to figure into it along with their politics.

The chain revolutions of 1848 in Euroland, for example, came from a rejection in of the monarchy in Sicily thence to France, Germany etc.

But inevitably a mismatch between public consent, explicit or implicit, causes political unrest that can result in changes as mild as new parties in power to actually changing the structure of government to the liking of the new elite.

Corporate fascism as exemplified by the EU style welfare politics is dying--what will replace it--no one knows right now.
