The Morning Report — 8/19/25

5thcircuit.jpg

Good morning kids. Well for what it's worth, President Trump and Shecky Zelensky of Ukraine reportedly had a cordial meeting, coming on the heels of the former's meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska. At the very least there are strong indications that there will be some sort of trilateral meeting between all the parties with the aim of ending the Russo/Ukraine war.

President Donald J. Trump has said he hopes today’s bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and summit with major European leaders will pave the way for a trilateral meeting between Zelensky, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and himself to negotiate an end to the war between the two Eastern European countries. Zelensky—and the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, NATO, and the European Union (EU)—gathered for an unprecedented summit at the White House on Monday after President Trump held bilateral discussions with Putin last Friday in what could mark a significant breakthrough towards ending the Ukraine war.“If everything works out well today, we’ll have a trilat—and I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that,” President Trump said. The America First leader emphasized that any trilateral meeting must be aimed at securing an enduring and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

So while there was jaw-jaw war-war was still happening. . .

Ukrainian Drones Hit Refineries, Drive Russia’s Gas Prices to Record Highs . . . “Russia, one of the world's largest energy producers, relies heavily on oil exports to fund its full-scale war against Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted Russian energy facilities that both supply fuel to its military and generate revenue for the Kremlin.”

No doubt this will have an effect on Putin, both personally and politically. From my perspective, it's imperative that we stay as far away from this mess as possible. There is talk of President Trump sending weaponry to Zelensky I assume to try and force the issue vis a vis Putin to make some sort of concessions. We shouldn't be sending even a Nerf Gun refill. And US troops? No way. Putin is not going to give an inch of what he has captured and I cannot envision Zelensky making any sort of concessions to stop the bloodshed, even though it's his people's blood being shed in the main and it's Russia that's the aggressor. The whole situation is a mess that's been going on since before the Soviet and Tsarist eras.

If President Trump can at least end this latest round of conflict, it certainly is a huge feather in his cap, and regardless of everything else, the end of the fighting is certainly a desirable outcome for the world, and not least of all for the people on both sides of the lines.

Meanwhile, back here in the States, while the Texas Democrat Flee Circus seems to have ended with their capitulation. . .

Yay for Texas, but . . .

. . . Yet another hack-in-black takes a rusty hacksaw to whatever is left of the Constitution:

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has denied Louisiana‘s request to enforce its congressional redistricting map, initially passed by the Republican-majority legislature in 2022. Judges ruled the map violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by diluting the votes of black residents through practices described as “packing” and “cracking” black voters, undermining their voting power.Notably, 83 percent of black voters nationwide backed Democrat candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. The court rejected Louisiana’s argument that race-based remedies are no longer necessary, stating, “There is no legal basis for this proposition, and the state offers no evidence that conditions in Louisiana have changed.” One judge issued a stay before the decision could take effect, though the Supreme Court had already stayed the map earlier in the year. The Supreme Court is also currently reviewing the case in Louisiana v. Callais and has requested additional arguments from both sides. The focus remains on whether Louisiana’s redistricting efforts were narrowly tailored to meet constitutional requirements. Justices are expected to weigh in further during the fall term.

Yes, we must have naked disgusting racialism in order to end naked disgusting racialism.

And then there are things that go boom in the night. . .

A cargo ship exploded in Chesapeake Bay near Baltimore on Monday evening.

“At this time, numerous emergency crews are responding to a cargo ship fire in the Baltimore Harbor on Chesapeake Bay, according to Maryland officials,” noted Rawsalerts. “The Baltimore City Fire Department reported that the ship caught fire in the Patapsco River near the site of the Key Bridge collapse.”

“While initial reports described it as an explosion, officials clarified that the incident involved an under-deck fire that sent smoke billowing into the air. The fire has since been contained, and the vessel is being removed from the channel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” it added.

Remember, we are still dealing with over four years and more really of at best a porous and at worst an intentionally wide open border where anyone and everyone from mere human traffickers and drug traffickers to terrorists and foreign saboteurs and agents can and have no doubt drifted in, meaning to do us harm.

In the wake of 9/11 (and I don't think I am giving away any big ideas or secrets here) I had often thought that as bad as that attack was, can you imagine multiple cargo ships (that are always sailing up and into New York Harbor) each loaded to capacity with AN-FO sailing up the harbor and grounding themselves under the bridges and over the Battery, Lincoln and Midtown tunnels then exploding. The death and destruction would've been orders of magnitude greater than 9/11.

AN-FO is a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. As was used to devastating effect in Oklahoma City in 1995. And that was just a single Ryder Truck.

And so with the revelations and confirmation about the Deep State and the criminal traitors who ran it and sadly the many underlings that are likely still embedded in it, this item makes me go hmm?

It has always been hard to believe that the truck-bombing of the A.P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, which killed 168 people, including 19 children at a daycare center, was planned by just one or two perpetrators acting alone. However, the official story states that the mastermind was Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh, and that the two others sentenced with him only helped him in various ways.

The bombing happened at the height of the Clinton era. And in the immediate aftermath Clinton was quick to blame conservatives and right-wingers, specifically he singled out Rush Limbaugh, his harshest and most effective critic, as perhaps inspiring the attack itself via his radio program. Later Clinton tried to explain/obfuscate that he was blaming some ham radio operator out in the sticks and not El Rushbo.

Remember that this is the same Clinton machine that engineered the Russia Collusion hoax with the same FBI and Intel agencies that worked their fingers to the bone to sabotage and attempt to take down candidate and then President Trump. And the very same operatves, Brennan Comey and Clapper and many if not all of their underlings were working in the FBI, CIA, DoJ and elsewhere in the Deep State when the Murrah Building was leveled.

So, engineer a right-wing terrorist attack as a pretext to drive the GOP and conservative movement as well as the alternative media completely out of existence. Just like they attempted with Trump. Rush Limbaugh broke the Leftist stranglehold on news dissemination and in a similar fashion, the MAGA movement if indeed it flourishes into a legitimate movement is an existential threat to Leftists/Democrats/Globalists. And so, by any means necessary.

As I said, Hmm. . . indeed. If they are willing to steal elections, subvert the Judiciary, open the borders and flood the nation with criminals, illegals and terrorists as well as use the apparatus of government to take down elected political enemies and as we know all too well, merely lowly citizens, there is nothing they will not consider beyond the pale to preserve protect and defend their hold on power (hello the J-6 Pelosi engineered Reichstag weenie roast).

And lastly, a quick shout-out and thank you for your continued support in hitting our tip jar. It truly is appreciated more than you can know.

I love how Europe, which forgot the importance of generating her own energy, especially hydrocarbons, is egging on Ukraine to continue to destroy any potential exportable energy source, thereby driving up Europe's energy costs even further.

In the meantime, the US is expanding its ability to export hydrocarbons globally.

This is what happens when you let demons play War using humans as their game pieces.

That may be, but even if it hadn't happened, they'd still see NATO as a threat. Edward Crankshaw described the thinking even during Tsarist times. We look at Russia as being some looming menace. They look at their border and think how big and how hard it is to defend.

This has been war gamed to death, and you have the Maritime Transportation Security Act and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) and all of the security measures beginning at the originating port all the way through to entering any US navigable waterway.

It is far more than allowing some rusting hulk of a unnamed cargo ship from North Korea dropping anchor under the GW Bridge.

71 Commercial shipping is weird. The various laws, treaties, habits, etc. of Mariner's has to go back centuries.

There was a cargo ship that had an engineering causality and was adrift in the ocean (Atlantic IIRC) for friggin weeks before it was agreed who was responsible for assisting it.

The owners? Who supplied the cargo? Who the cargo was for? The government of registry? The nearest government with a Coast Guard? Captain's country of origin or crew's?

Ship drifted a hundred of miles while all that was going on.

73 What exactly is so horrible about the Democratic party? This country has always been better economically, socially and fiscally under democrats that is well documented. Why all the distrust and hate?

It's quite simple. We like black people and other minorities. They used to have an ugly phrase for it. But we made them stop saying it. And they really hate us for that.

Still flummoxes me how we can be bleeding minority support vs. Trump/GOP AND have 25% of our registered voters stay home for the 2024 election. If that continues, it makes a comeback almost impossible.

2 reasons. They don’t want a woman president. And Hispanics especially are horrified at anything called “socialism”.

Biggest weakness: Reacting instead of Acting. The GOPers are masters at controlling the narrative. But rarely do Democrats throw out a popular POLICY (say Medicare For All) then sit back and wait for the reactions.

Nobody can say anything here without getting twitterpated and reported as a closet Republican because your view of the party doesn't agree 100% with theirs.

Echo chambers are for people that want their ears tickled and soothed, not truth

Richard Lee Guthrie.

Guthrie’s name meant nothing to Jesse Trentadue, but in the far-right radical scene, he had some notoriety. In 1994 and 1995, Guthrie and his gang, the Aryan Republican Army, carried out an impressive series of 22 bank robberies across the Midwest, netting some $250,000 that they used to support the white-supremacist movement.

MAD was the theory everyone had for preventing war. SDI upended that. SDI may have been defensive but a country which has no fear of being attacked is more likely to be willing to be aggressive.

All these things are easily understandable if you can get past the "Russians are always the bad guys" mindset.

A lot of how long a road lasts depends on the road subbase prep, geology of the area, and climate. For example, the South has problems for example with concrete cracking by thermal expansion. North has problems with uses of deicing agents affecting the road surface and so on.

There were some pilot projects though using pre stressed pre fab concrete sections of road that were carted in (late 70's or early 80's). That was less costly and from my memory did better as the concrete was cured and made in a controlled facility rather than on site.

So you could be right.

156 So in regards to the redistricting/gerrymandering issue, it's unconstitutional or something to draw congressional districts a certain way, but no one seems concerned that 85-95% of a particular demographic consistently votes in only one way? Maybe that's the problem, not the lines on the map.

There is your problem, you think that a certain demographic votes 85-95% a particular way. No one counts votes, they count ballots and in those districts there is no correlation between "votes" and "ballots". Rather, one thing is for certain, there are far more ballots than votes.

It has to make claims on persons, places and things that their culture had no connection to, even after rejecting what it actually stands for.

Chip and seal makes economic sense for reviving the surfaces of minor roads. One of the major problems with asphalt (or chip and seal) is as the binder becomes tired, it cracks, deforms, etc. leading to water infiltration into the road subbase. That leads to out right blowouts--potholes, etc. Asphalt replacement requires stripping the old layers of asphalt and placing new lifts down--more expensive, more permanent, and more time consuming.

If an transportation agency acts before the road surface of an asphalt road deteriorates thoroughly, then chip and seal can prevent and extend the life of the asphalt below by sealing the surface from water infiltration.

FWIW, chip and seal almost always is in highway construction summer season as the tar needs hot temperatures to help the road tar fully bind with the previous road surface and the aggregate.

Chip and seal over concrete though is a cosmetic fix.

A lot depends on truck traffic. Heavy trucks (often well overloaded) deteriorate roads much faster than car traffic. Our older interstates were designed around a 73k limit on weight--thus they began to fail more rapidly when 80k truck limits became the law of the land.

In farm states, it is not uncommon for farm trucks toting grain from harvest to be as much as 30-40k over that 80k limit if they can get away with it or try to judge loads without going across a scale. Common in some other local industries as well to send out overloaded trucks.

The death and destruction would've been orders of magnitude greater than 9/11.

"Filegate" occurred during the Clinton administration in the 1990s and involved the improper retrieval of FBI background files on hundreds of individuals, including many from previous Republican administrations.

Craig Livingstone, director of the White House Office of Personnel Security, improperly requested these files in 1993 and 1994 without the subjects' permission. This led to political accusations, including claims that senior White House officials or First Lady Hillary (later "Killary" of The Arkancides and Benghazi) Clinton may have sought the files for political purposes.

Louisiana, because of New Orleans hospitality was one of the last states to raise its drinking age to 21. They lost highway trust funds from the US govt for over a decade because of it putting them in a hole as far as road maintenance across the state. So during that time, the state prioritized what money it had toward the highest priority roads like from Baton Rouge to New Orleans (j/k).

Roads are kind of like roofs and siding on houses or a car--they will deteriorate just from weather alone so regular maintenance is a must.

Get behind the curve and it costs a lot more to fix over time.

They all simultaneously went from Bombs! Bombs! Bombs! to nothing but crickets in a heartbeat. The word had to have gotten out that the threats were coming from the left. Would be quite a story there, if we had any journalists left.

The service provides everything required to put together a news "show", including sound bites, video clips, copy, Chyron, and graphics. The material is fed via satellite and through the internet to the stations, with servers set up so the news director and producer could access the material and build a show. Been going on for years.

Rebar used to be used for routine concrete jobs including driveways, sidewalks, etc. And neither are high traffic areas where you run heavy trucks on them routinely. So the concrete can last in such situations barring surface deterioration.

Ideally though, builder's sand is used rather than playground sand as it is rougher (you can tell by feel) and takes to adhering better in mortar or concrete applications.

But due to expense, you use the aggregate and sand common in your area rather than shipping the best all around the country. Some places use seashells/coral/crushed limestone because they that is what geography handed them to use locally.

But for the Obama part a lot of the people involved talked about how their decision making was based on politics .Foe the Bush people that was never an issue, they did what they did (right or wrong) based on what they thought would work.

It was an interesting juxtaposition between the two. For Obama everything was about how the mission would affect re-election. For Bush, it wasn’t a thing. At least not according to the people who worked under him. It’s a nasty twist of irony that Obama got the credit when he basically had to be pulled kicking and screaming into authorizing the mission.

Unfortunately that happens as well. On older concrete interstates, you notice the rougher road surfaces at exit ramps and before bridges, etc. due to braking and acceleration. Asphalt ruts.

That though is beyond my paygrade to figure out the math of that other than weight kills roads--publius or aop could, me, not so much. The greater the weight on the vehicles, the faster it deteriorates as force equals mass times acceleration.

Curves do also suffer water accumulation more as they drain, almost always the lowest end is the part that deteriorates first versus the top bank side of the curve if done right.

Aww, poor former FBI Director James Comey is scared.

>NBC News, Oct 7, 2020, 'Taylor Swift endorses Joe Biden for President' Swift had largely stayed out of politics before 2018 out of fear of isolating her audience.

She had provided cover for their dirty deeds - and not just for Comey but slews of others - even if that were never ever her intention. (Now it may be, "... Never Ever Getting Back Together," at least as it once seemed to be.)

279 Regarding the OK City bombing... Although widely reported as such, this was not an ANFO bomb. It was actually ANNM, which is Ammonium Nitrate-Nitromethane, which is a far more witchy brew than ANFO. In particular, the detonation velocity of ANNM is significantly higher than for ANFO, and ANNM is far easier to initiate as an explosive.

280 When Pepsi held an online contest in 2012 to name a new Mountain Dew flavor, 4chan users hijacked it, flooding the rankings with names like “Diabeetus.” That same year, they rigged a contest where fans could vote for Taylor Swift to perform at their school. I hesitate to tell you this part, but they rigged it so that the winning school was the Horace Mann School for the Deaf.

281 I'll always remember that picture of the OKC firefighter carrying the lifeless little girl after the 1995 bombing. A conservative talk radio personality interviewed him after Clinton stuck his fat foot in his mouth, the firefighter admitted he listen(ed) to El Rushbo.

282 off topic, but that Victoria banshee in Newport is in senior management at Pepsi. A website reports "Her skills include communicating with senior business leaders on complex data, analytics and artificial intelligence solutions."
Maybe her problem is too much time on artificial intelligence and not on the old-fashioned kind.

283 "even though it's [Ukrainian] people's blood being shed in the main"

That's partly true, and partly false.

With respect to civilians, it's absolutely correct. The Russians deliberately target civilians with missiles and drones, while the Ukrainians make a conscious effort to aim for Russian military and economic targets.

War criminals do love their war crimes.

But with regard to military personnel, it's not true at all. Military attrition rates are anywhere from 2.5 to 5 Russian casualties for every Ukrainian casualties. Mostly because Ukraine benefits from the defender's advantage on the battlefield. But perhaps some of that is attributable to Russia being more beholden to moribund Soviet tactics.

(Of course, Russia's population is 3x that of Ukraine's. So, attrition rates have to be higher than 3 for Ukraine to win the attritional war.)
