Trump Expects to Have a Three-Way Trilateral Summit With Putin and Zelenskyy "If Everything Works Out Today"

Jacqui Heinrich
@JacquiHeinrich

NEWS: I just got off the phone with a source involved in the pre-meeting with Zelenskyy at the Ukrainian embassy this morning:

MY NOTES:
1) I'm told there's no expectation that today wraps up with a date on the calendar for a trilateral summit -- but today would be a success if Zelenskyy had a realistic discussion about territorial concessions

2) Nobody expects Zelenskyy to take Putin's first version of the map back to his country, but he needs to talk about what he can let go and what is critical to keep.
2a. -- Getting clarity on security guarantees and what that looks like will make it easier for Zelenskyy to sell that back home

2b. -- Asked about what that means for the timeline, I'm told the US feels there is political energy behind this, a light at the end of the tunnel, and wants to get it done now -- but knows it won't be instant. More like "weeks not months" -- and Ukraine understands this

3) US and Europeans have "gently" made suggestions on territory, but they are also aware that Zelenskyy has to take this back and massage it through his own system -- "gotta come back with a counteroffer"
3a. -- I asked how Zelenskyy is approaching that given Ukraine's constitutional requirement of a national referendum for territorial changes -- I'm told the the general attitude is "that's a you problem" -- as in, up to Zelenskyy to figure out and handle
3b. -- On territory with minerals being under Russian control, basically if America has a stake in land, it is a security in an of itself - its in their interest to make that work

4) Europeans believe the security guarantees are a very very big deal, and want to protect and preserve it -- which is part of why they are all eager to be here today.
4a. -- They also want to help Zelenskyy manage this high-wire act because "the risk factor of Zelenskyy putting his foot in his mouth is significant"

5) The discussion on security guarantees won't produce full security plan today- but they want clear next steps to work on, "a commitment in principle from the coalition of the willing, the US, hammering out alongside Ukrainians"
5a. -- Some awareness that the US should legislate this, make sure it lasts into future administrations
5b. -- Also the WH sees Putin's acceptance of security guarantees as important -- their attitude is "Now we have to put more meat on the bone"

6) Today it is important to demonstrate unity between Europeans, US, and Ukraine -- that would define success

7) Neither Ukrainians or Americans want today to fail

Zelenskyy, of course, insisted that he would never, ever concede any territory to Russia, because his country's constitution -- which he freely ignores when it suits him -- forbids it.

Zelensky said Sunday that Kyiv will not surrender territory not currently occupied by Russian forces as part of any peace deal, adding that Ukraine's constitution forbids it.

"We need real negotiations," Zelensky said to reporters in Brussels at a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, per Just the News.

In addition to meeting with Trump, other European leaders are expected to be at the White House as well, reports said.

Zelensky stated that Russia has been unable to seize part of eastern Ukraine it has sought to control since 2014. He emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin "has been unable to take it for 12 years, and the constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible ... to give up territory or trade land," according to Politico.

But that might just be bluster and positioning. You never want to concede anything before you start actually negotiating.

A few items:

Trump notes that Zelenskyy canceled elections during the war which gives Trump an idea for "three and a half years from now."

Obviously the vaunted Ukrainian Constitution is pretty flexible in its terms, huh?

Trump says the "whole world is tired" of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Melania wrote a personal letter to Putin imploring him to consider the lives of all the children he's either killing or making orphaned.

Zelenskyy actually wore a suit for once, and was complimented by a reporter and Trump.

It's "Joe Biden's war."

On Sunday, the ill-prepared DEI hire Margaret Brennan insisted that European leaders were joining the summit to... protect Zelenskyy from "bullying." It's a Democrat Cult Article of Faith that Trump "bullied" Zelenskyy at their last meeting.

Marco Rubio said no, they're coming to join in the negotiations.

Note that European countries will have to promise to defend Ukraine with actual troops to secure a peace agreement. I don't think they'll agree to that, or if they do, they'll make sure their are massive escape clauses allowing them to disown the agreement at will.

Martha Raddatz is incensed at the idea that Trump, in seeking to broker a peace deal, would expect any concessions from Zelenskyy, and demands to know what concessions he's demanded of Putin.

She also insisted that Trump was wrong to shake Putin's hand, even though he was meeting with Putin on a diplomatic mission and diplomatic niceties are very much required.

She is very clearly reviving the "Trump is a Putin agent" hoax which she apparently still thinks is factually true. She is basically telling Rubio that Trump cannot broker a peace when he's an agent of one of the parties involved.

She doesn't say that, but it's obvious. There cannot be any other reason for her being unhinged over the idea that warring parties will have to make mutual concessions to reach a peace agreement. Or that Trump should shake the hand of a man he's invited to America for a diplomatic negotiation.

82 Russia invading Ukraine was wrong, just like the previous one and the invasion of Georgia. Taking that land was wrong. Killing people in war is bad, and awful and should only be done as a last resort. Defending your own territory is a just cause.

BUT... with all that said, Ukraine cannot win. They lost this territory. They need to give it up and stop the meat grinder, they cannot win.

What Ukraine did, usually, is make it very costly, time consuming, and even embarrassing to Russia so they will be reluctant to consider this next time. So despite its horrors, it was useful and served a purpose.

The trick is to get Zelenskyy in a moment when he's not all coked up and filled with nonsense by the European leadership. And to let Trump get the win.

161 I'm not sure what "pressure" Trump put on Pootin. He was willing to come to the table. That's the biggest difference.

Yeah, Trump says things, but in the end, if a deal comes out of this, it won't be due to Trump pressure, it will be due to Russia wanting this thing to have ended, and the West finally coming to the reality that they can't win.
Posted by: BurtTC at August 18, 2025 02:24 PM (dGCAG

Russia could do this for another 20 years if they wanted. It's what they do and have been doing.

Putin came to the table because Trump imposed genuine sanctions and closed loopholes in the original "sanctions". We and Europe have helped fund both sides of this war until this last few months.

You think Putin came to the table by magic or because Trump asked really really really nicely? No. Trump put the offer on the table and when Putin balked, Trump found places to squeeze.

Desperate Putin can't win on his own, wants Felon and the US to be part of his arsenal. Is the GOP really OK with that?

It suggests the actual goal of Doge/Trump was to destroy our research strength, our universities' excellence and made lives harder for most Americans.

Of course. Trump is a traitor to democracy. No surprise there! What is surprising is all the morons in the US House and Senate that allow it to continue.

"Almost was" is more than a bit overly generous. It was an opening soundbite in which an exchange was proposed to bring an end to or severe limits on chain migration. It went nowhere, and it was primarily a tool used to try and separate Trump from his supporters.

As far as evolved, yes, I think Trump has gotten more savvy, so as to prevent handing his opposition such easy lay ups.

Since VP is about consolidation of higher power opinion, and not about what anyone below cares about, it all depends on what Vance would want to do in this hypothetical.

Rubio could mean a combination of continuation of Trump as well as a coalition with whatever neocons have become in the GOP as represented by Rubio.

Vance going with Stephen Miller would be hilarious, though. Imagine that signal. (not a prediction, just a random thought)

More so, we are tired of being made promises ("If we only had have the House . . . ," "If we only had have the Senate . . . ," "If we only had have the POTUS . . . .") and then getting shit on as soon as we, the American people, deliver political power.

Rubio came up as part of that ilk, and he is rightly distrusted as being of part of that.

Greenland snark aside, I don't know that there's anything he could do to salvage that for me, but I suppose he could surprise me. Too many give it up too easily for my tastes.

306 No one can tell me that extra 'y' does anything but be annoying.

For language purists, it does have a purpose: you do pronounce it "zeh-len'skee-ih" but its very small and subtle. Its spelled with two "ee" sounds at the end for that reason.

But practically, I'd probably drop it in English.

2000's Al Gore and TN feels like political reality simply shifting beneath his feet.

I do think there is a favorite son effect for POTUS candidates, but it's not great. Ultimately, overall partisan feelings drive most of that. The only place where it seems to be different is in governor's races, but that's obviously not about favorite son effects and more about cross-partisan voting.

Hell, Romney had 3 home states in 2012, and he lost 2 of them.

So explain Gore doing way better in TN (his home state) than Kerry against the same candidate?

It's fine if you disagree, but it's silly to come at this that you have some analysis that "proves" it's not there.

It's as simple as why do incumbents tend to get reelected? There's a certain familiarity that nets votes, it could be as simple as constituent services helping someone resolve a problem.

It's why many politicians have this outreach, it helps garner votes

Examples that back up this assertion?

"Trump notes that Zelenskyy canceled elections during the war... Obviously the vaunted Ukrainian Constitution is pretty flexible in its terms, huh?"

Those elections were cancelled in rigid (which is to say, not flexible) accordance with the Ukrainian constitution. Article 83 of the Ukrainian constitution specifically states that new parliamentary elections are suspended during Martial Law.

All other elections are prohibited during Martial Law by Ukraine's Electoral Code.
