I've been looking all over for that!

Wallet Lost by a Ford Employee 10 Years Ago Just Turned Up 150K Miles Later Under a Car Hood

doof-ford-wallet.jpg

A Ford Motor Company employee was reunited with a wallet he lost 10 years ago after a mechanic found it while servicing a car he built.

This charming story comes via Minnesota, where mechanic Chad Volk was replacing the cooling fan on a 2015 Ford Edge, when something that needed to snap in place, simply wouldn’t snap.

“I messed around a little bit and then pulled it back out and the wallet was sitting on a little ledge where it needed to snap down,” Volk told CBS News. “I pulled the wallet out and that’s what it was.”

Inside the brown trifold was a Michigan driver’s license, $15,00 [sic], a faded lottery ticket, $275 in Cabella’s gift cards, and a Ford employee ID, going to show that no matter how long you work under hoods and under chassis, you’ve never seen everything, Volk says.

***

Cabella’s even said they would honor the gift cards, which for part-time auctioneer Guilford means he can leave the relic of his past totally intact “in his china cabinet,” where he hopes his kids will pull it out and tell their grandkids about their ancestor’s wild, wandering wallet.

Cool story! Video of a local news segment about this is at the link.

Artificial Intelligence vs Natural Stupidity?

In this case, seems like just an old guy who got duped because he didn't know any better.

75-Year-Old Pensioner Asks Wife for Divorce After Falling in Love with AI-Generated Girl Online

A Chinese old man recently fell victim to the deception of artificial intelligence by falling so in love with an AI-generated online model that he asked his wife for a divorce.

According to the Beijing Daily, a 75-year-old man named Jiang came across an AI-generated female avatar while browsing social media. To those familiar with digital avatars, the girl is obviously an AI creation, but to Jiang’s untrained eye, she is just a beautiful girl who enjoys having conversations with him. It doesn’t even matter that her speech and her moving lips are out of sync. As time goes by, he becomes so obsessed with his online girlfriend that the highlight of his day is waiting by his phone to get new generic messages from her. At one point, after his wife scolds him for spending too much time on his phone, the man tells his spouse of several decades that he wants to divorce her to fully dedicate himself to the AI avatar.

***

Experts warn families with elderly relatives to closely monitor their online activity, especially if they spend too much time with gadgets. While AI technology has clear practical benefits, it can also be extremely dangerous against vulnerable targets.

That last bit is a solid piece of advice. We 29 year-olds here at AOSHQ are hip to all the latest technology, but we need to look out for the "SEASONED citizens" (as El Rushbo would say) in our lives. Do your parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents know about AI?

One Thousand Miles of New Interstate Planned

Where will the first Buc-ee's be along the route?

Ohio joins six-state effort to build 1,000-mile interstate corridor

doof-i737475.jpg

Ohio is examining ways to put underdeveloped parts of the state on the road to prosperity by constructing a new interstate highway.

It’s joining a decades-long effort to create a new interstate highway that would connect Michigan to South Carolina, stitching together existing roadways and planned construction across six states into a transportation corridor that could reshape regional economic development.

The Interstate 73-74-75 corridor would run nearly 1,000 miles from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. On the way, it would pass through Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.

***

The project aims to upgrade existing routes and connect bypasses into a seamless interstate system - pulling together scattered segments into a unified whole over years of coordinated effort.

***

Jimmy Gray, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the I-73, I-74, I-75 Corridor Association says the project has been discussed for almost 30 years.

Members of the group working to build the highway meet regularly with each other and their congressional representatives in six states to discuss their progress and strategize on ways to secure funding.

The corridor would connect major population centers and industrial hubs, from Michigan’s manufacturing base through Ohio’s defense and technology facilities to the tourism economy of the Carolinas, he says.

Long article, but interesting - at least for road trippers and map nerds like me.

Any of you Hordelings in this path have some insight or anecdotes to share about driving through there?

They need to finish building I-11, from Las Vegas to Phoenix. Most of it is existing right-of-way; just needs upgrading. There are a few miles of real, no-shit I-11 from Railroad Pass to the Hoover Dam, then it reverts to rough-ass U.S. 93 from there to Kingman, AZ. 93 co-locates with I-40 from Kingman to a few miles east, where it then turns south to Wickiup. A little bit more of that road gets 4-laned every year, but they sure aren't hi-balling it.

87 Any of you Hordelings in this path have some insight or anecdotes to share about driving through there?
-------

Yes. From the mid 60's through the mid 80's I occasionally rode U.S. 52 from Indy all the way down to central NC. I did dearly enjoy that road. It runs from the north edge of ND to the coast in SC. Sure, sure, Rt. 66 gets all of the glory, but a long trip down U.S 52 was a trip through middle America. Sometimes by car, sometimes by m'cycle.

Once you get east of Cincinnati it was a rider's/driver's road. Interspersed with small towns that caused me to wish that I lived there as I passed through. Crossing the Blue Ridge at Fancy Gap, I always felt that I was home again.

I suppose that everything has changed now, but at the time, just being there was as enjoyable as the drive itself.

101 I know you're joking, but I honestly like train travel and really wish we still had an efficient system.
Posted by: Dr. T at August 18, 2025 10:12 PM (lHPJf)

One consideration:

The Orient Express is 1,500 miles long.

Boston to Los Angeles is 2,600 miles.

As much as I would love a decent train, we're simply too big a country now, what with air travel, for intercontinental trains, at least not with current technology.

I'm not saying we can't do it, it's just that it's going to require at minimum a whole system-wide track upgrade. Our current rails simply cannot handle high speed trains.

Then the issue of electric versus diesel. The Northeast, from D.C. to Boston is electric. From D.C. south and west it's diesel. Unless the system's on the same energy page, that will slow things down; I've had to wait on the train out of NYC while in D.C. changing from electric to diesel engines to continue on to Richmond; that took about an hour 15 minutes or so while we were stuck on the train.

There aren't many private companies who could still engineer & build it in a human lifetime - let alone *them.*

But I don't suppose they could just be straightforward and call it the National 73-74-75 Systematic Institutional Fraud Scheme Association, could they?

Scrolling through astronaut Don Pettit's X feed, looking at the latest photos he posted from his last expedition, I noticed he linked to some photo from Nicole Ayers, who just came home from the Crew-10 expedition a couple weeks ago. She posted some pretty nice photos and video herself.

One I thought was really fun was this acceleration video she did. Drag on the ISS causes the orbit to slowly degrade and they have to fire thrusters to re-boost themselves into the proper orbit. When they do, the station accelerates (proper acceleration, true acceleration in relativistic terms).

So, during that manever, they will feel it, and "weigh" a little bit. If they're hanging on. If not, and they just free-float, they will fall a little bit in the opposite direction of the acceleration. They had some fun with that here:

244 Well, I got the bad (?) left side motor mount out of the '99 Suburban this evening. It wasn't terribly difficult. Contrary to Ewetoob experts, I found I did have to uncouple both front mounts in order to lift the front left side of the engine enough to winkle the left mount out of there. New mounts are supposed to be at my nearby Napa store tomorrow. I am going to very carefully compare new mounts to the old ones, and if I cannot find some defect or "set" in the old ones to account for the engine sitting too low on the left, I will add a shim between the engine block and the "cup" receptacle for the mount. Such shims were apparently used '86 to '91, but not on my model.

245 36 ....They need to finish building I-11, from Las Vegas to Phoenix.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 18, 2025 10:14 PM (F6+9F)

Growing up near West Palm Beach in the 1970's we had a completed 10 mile stretch of I-95 around WPB but it wouldn't connect the 60 or so miles north to Vero Beach until the early '80's due to some conflict with the Florida Turnpike bond holders - 'no competing road'.

The stretch south from WPB to north of Ft Lauderdale wasn't completed until the late '70's. For years there was a 100' or so wide swath of pristine Florida jungle running thru our neighborhood where the road would go.

The lesion occurred in the place on the arm that gets the most sun when typically resting on the car window while driving. I wonder about the handedness prevalence of forearm SCC in left-hand steering-wheel countries vs right-hand steering wheel countries.

273 The question would be how many calutrons were there in 1945 versus 2025, and what happened to them. The Clinton administration stealing the silver sort of tracks. It was a fuckpile of money just sitting there.

They probably did scrap most of them at some point. That is a lot of silver. Did Treasury get it back? Or just make a book keeping entry. They knew where it was at, at least.

I know Groves was lauded for at least keeping excellent records for the money spent, even if it was insane amounts.

Posted by: Common Tater at August 19, 2025 12:12 AM (q/G6k)

274 Post-War Silver Return: Most of the silver used in the Oak Ridge calutrons was returned to the Treasury by 1970, as the majority of the calutrons (especially the Alpha stages) were decommissioned or repurposed. For example, the Alpha Calutron magnets in Building 9731 had their silver windings replaced with copper during this period.

Different design process.

Today they start with explicit roster of 'x' workers, how many SQ ft each, spacial relations for various workgroups... What exact equipment machines go in... and go through multiple design revisions (nevermind permitting, etc).

WWII - I need office space, 5000 staff, 100 sq ft ea, ummm, mutli-story, 12 ft floor to floor.... Then figure out how to fit them in. Stick on utility space if needed.

Hangars - WWII Give me a big fricken barn. Now, Fit that bird like a glove, not an inch to spare.

280 And I did chalk up a win on the car stereo front. Pulled the new, not-working Dual tuner/amp rig out of the dash, and checked constant 12 volts and switched 12 volts with a test light. Both worked. Tested the ground. ground was good. So I unboxed another unit, plugged it in, and as soon as it powered up, I heard the FM between-channel sound in the speakers. Plugged in my thumb drive, and music burst forth from all four speakers. So I had a dud stereo right out of the box.

To top it off, I replaced the driver's side door striker, and now the door closes with authority.

The stereo sound quality is marginal to bad. "Front" speakers are two 3" jobs packed in a frame to replace the original 4X10" oval speaker in the top center of the dash (a common feature of '60's cars). So stereo separation is about nil. And my "rear" speakers are two old computer speakers screwed to the firewall under the dash. I think I may take out the plastic covers on either side of the rear seat that house the top lift cylinders. There may be room in there to fit shallow 5" speakers without interfering with the mechanism. I will not cut the door panels; they are still too nice, and new ones are now NLA.

305 I depended on aftermarket car-service manuals often, back when I was a single female without a boyfriend and could not afford to just "take it to a shop" like others could.

Had Chilton's, Motor, Clymer, Haynes-- sometimes more than one manual for each vehicle. It's like getting a second opinion on the job at hand.

These are all still in my Shop Library! Plus, a few dedicated manuals for various transmissions & engines, that I got *cheap* at a discount store that was going out of business. Can't pass up a 99 cent price on a 30 dollar book!

307 159 We just did a road trip from South Dakota to central New York and back. The interstate road system is over crowded and out dated. The roads were in bad shape. On our return to South Dakota, we stayed off the interstates as much as possible which reduced the wear on our vehicle and reduced our stress level.
Posted by: Archer at August 18, 2025 11:00 PM (IDphi)

You didn’t drive in TX.

There are only two places with good roads: Germany and TX. TXDoT actually upgrades its Interstates, though admittedly I-20 is looking a little worse for the wear out west.

I’d like to see I-27 at least extended to I-20. Even better if the north portion were extended from Amarillo to Raton, NM.

One thing that struck me, even the repair manuals from the 1920s, the internal combustion engine was pretty well figured out. Nothing has changed, they just have an assload of stuff hanging off it now, it operates under exactly the same principles and the faults are exactly the same, and a mechanic from 2025 would probably learn something very useful from a fault diagnostic chapter in a manual published from 1925

324 Well, Pierre Poilievre has handily won the by-election in Battle River-Crowfoot, which is my riding. Not all polling places have reported, but he is currently leading with 79% of votes cast, over 26,000 votes so far. Closest runner-up is independent Bonnie Critchley, with some 3400 votes, double that of the Liberal contender, and four times that of the aptly-named NDP candidate, Katherine Swampy, with some 750 votes. There were a few other also-rans either serious independents, or from minor protest parties who got a hundred or two hundred votes, and a whole slew of nuisance candidates who got anywhere from zero to four votes (their entire cell block turned out?). The nuisance factor of this was neutralized by the simple expedient of not printing any of the candidates' names on the ballot: voters were simply instructed to write in the first name and last name of their choice, and the party affiliation, in case of same or similar names. None of the nuisance candidates had names remotely similar to Pierre Poilievre, so that never became a problem.

I saw Men at Work at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in the summer of 1983. I was a high school kid taking summer courses at the Skidmore College Institute of Classical Studies (beefing up the ole university application resume - studied intermediate Latin and History of Ancient Rome). My friend who attended the college outright worked security for SPAC, so he got me and a friend in as "interns" or something like that. We also saw Men at Work, Talking Heads, Peter Paul and Mary (who were in their usual commie form, but very good) and the Grateful Dead. We also saw a few classical music concerts as well. All outside under the stars. Great place to see a show - highly recommend. Men at Work was a great show, they rocked out pretty well.

After those terrible droughts we had back a few decades ago, I said I would never complain about rain again. But I'm getting close to breaking that, I'm afraid.

It just dumped another 0.91", pushing my total for Aug to 7.88". We'll top 8" for sure. Would've been nice if 3" of that could've fell in July, but there we are.

And it's gonna be cloudy until noon, so no chance of me seeing Mercury early this morning on the morning side, and that would be the optimal time.

330 It's not amazing. It's access and culture.

There are an assload of white people who can't swim either because they never did it and it's not something they grew up doing.

Go to the Caribbean and you will see a lot of black people who can swim. In Baltimore and Detroit and most cities where black people live not so much.
Posted by: JackStraw at August 18, 2025 11:55 PM (viF8m)

Um, no.

It is a parent's job to make sure the kids can swim. That is a survival skill.

And being from Alaska, when there was exactly one four-lane 20 yard pool available to most of us, we learned how to swim. We swam in anything, any lake, no matter how cold. Kenai Lake is glacier-fed, and that didn't stop us.

Access? For heaven's sake, everywhere has a public pool anymore. They are in high schools, for heaven's sake.

If your kid drowns, it's your fault. I don't care what color you are.

JC Whitney was our lifeline up here in the 1970's. Dad would buy two old VW's and make one out of them. We got a car if we helped. Mine ran $300 for the car and $300 for the engine. That's where you learn how to use your clothes as a float and basically... how to float. Us white boys would be in the deep end doing back flips off the diving board with our BDUs tied around us. Combat boots and all. The shallow end was filled with black guys trying to float in 3 feet of water and sinking. So I asked my buddy Dread WTF? and he said blacks are more dense. They don't float like white people.

I only ever saw Colin Hay live playing with Ringo Starr's travelling circus of a band. That was a hoot of a show.

I was a kid sitting front row. During one of the more sing-along kind of songs, my voice cracked *super* hard, so badly that Colin himself actually noticed it through his monitor, flinched, and looked straight at me with a face that clearly said "What in the hell was that, kid?", and then smirked and kept on playing.

And, for the record, I cannot recall who opened for them that night.

360 These is also something other things I found amusing at the lovely RCC during my visit on Sunday. There were two boys of about four and five beautifully dressed up wearing ties and with two people whom I'm guessing were their grandparents . I think they might have been coloring in the pew because there is no Sunday school at 8:00.. Good to have restless little boys occupied Anyway, the were facing backwards towards us and every so often they would peak up over the pew and smile

There was also a sweet little girl carefully. carrying up something I think for the collection. She looked a little nervous and I think she was there with her grandparents and when they all progressed a k down the aisle after she delivered whatever she needed to she liked very relieved and her grandparents were yes, smiling and laughing a bit.

Oh, yes , the priest said something amusing during the homily and I laughed . This does not mean I have disrespect for the RCC or the Mass It means I think people can be amusing during services and I am grateful that God has patience with us and that he must have a sense of humor with humanity

I was going to an RC church for a bit with my wife after we moved to our new place. We had been going for a good couple weeks, not really knowing anyone at all, but one day, right before collections, I got clapped on the arm by one of the deacon type guys who said "hey, our one guy is sick today, want to help out?" So I wound up doing the whole walk down the aisle row by row with the little wicker basket-on-a-stick thing.

It was incredibly awkward, my heathen self not knowing what to do with itself, and the congregation all looking at me like "who the heck is this guy?", but it was over quickly. Fortunately I was dressed pretty nice. (Heck, that may have been why they picked me... wearing a suit, sitting on the aisle, functioning arms and legs... a perfect pinch-collector.)

The head priest at our place is a mensch. He's very much the same way. He even says, "hey, if you're hard up and have nothing to give this month, *I'll* donate my own money in your name." And he isn't fibbing. The parish is doing pretty good for itself since everyone gives because they want to, not because they are guilted or harassed into it, and the pews are usually pretty full on game day on account of it. It's nice when we can see our religious leadership actually being leaders.

373 I go to the Catholic services with my wife who is catholic but I'm not. However I'm a trained singer (tenor) with a sizeable voice but the church acoustics are bad ; absorbent ceiling tiles and the modern semicircle layout. So the responses were done and the priest, a very nice fellow, said; I wish that man in the back singing so wonderfully would join the choir. Applause followed, I said to the people nearby; I didn't think they could hear me and we'll talk , about the choir. the two women who were the choir were what just happened ?The one knew I sang. The other was this 15 year old who sounded nice but had no idea she took breaths in the middle of lines I had asked her if she knew about breath control at a practice and got a blank look.

Sweetheart, Catholics go to Mass, they don't have "service."

And as a group, American Catholics have the worst music in church. Not sure why that is so, except that during the 1960's when the Mass was being destroyed a bunch of Jesuits wrote some very banal crap and it's been sung ever since, by bad musicians.

Good Catholic music is, of course, chant. And it is supposed to have "pride of place," but for some reason American Catholics just can't seem to get on board with that. It is beautiful, and not all that difficult.

Wrecking the Mass has been the mode of the day for a good 70 years now. If you can make Catholic music awesome for that parish, you go for it.

Interesting discussion because I just left my local parish here in Singapore because I could not stand the musical selection. Instead I attended Mass at the cathedral (where there is a large and well conducted choir and a real organ/organist). The idea that the Mass needs to be made more accessible by adding guitars and a drum track and singing pop-sounding hymns is absurd. The Catholic Mas is supposed to be ancient, everlasting and filled with mystery. We have 2,000 years of musical tradition, with sacred music from about 100 to 600 years ago being particularly wonderful. My feeling is that any musical director in a parish who, with all that great music to choose from, picks some ridiculous modern hymn should be excommunicated, after a public whipping.

385 from Hoyt over at Insty: African Union Wants End to Mercator Projection Map Use Over “Disinformation”

They say it makes them feel "marginalized", because all the stuff at the poles where those nasty ice people live looks bigger than it really is....

Bro. The standard Mercator Projection literally places Africa dead center on the map. It is as far from marginalizing as it is possible to be.

Even if you think Mercator was some kind of Radical Yupik Nationalist, or something, it's an utterly preposterous complaint. Also note the fundamental silliness of Africans complaining about European's lack of appreciation for their size...

Anyway, there's probably a word for making such an unintentionally ironic complaint that it demonstrates you don't have much to complain about. That word is probably German.

387 Since most folks who have been posting here for.while know the state which I live in ,here are some pictures of the lovely church I sometimes attend. Anyone who would think I would go to church to make fun of the Mass is lacking in discernment and no, of course I don't receive the Eucharist . In addition, not that everybody could possibly or even want to read every thread here, but I regularly post positive things about Roman Catholicism and will do so in an about an hour or so on the tech thread. I just don't care for nasty religious arguments among Christians and particularly among folks here who are politically conservative

393 Oh - and btw - at the Cathedral (Cathedral of The Good Shepherd). The choir and musicians/organist were excellent, but even they couldn't resist the need to follow up an excellent version of Ave Verum Corpus, with some God-awful modern hymn during communion.

Oh - And afterwards they gave a sampling from an upcoming out-of-church event where they will be performing. They decided to feature a modern "African" hymn in Swahili.

Um. No. Just. No. Please for the love of the Risen Lord, please stop.

396 Actually , the music at the RC on Sunday was very nice . They set some liturgical prayers
to music from the 1700s and for music during the reception of the Eucharist they had a 17th hymn by Issac Watts. Some of the liturgy was sung by the RC version of a cantor

I don't know the proper terms for the type of Masses but this one had.a fair amount of stuff in Latin so I'm quessiinv it's a Novo Ordus Mass? Sorry if I got the term wrong

Bro. The standard Mercator Projection literally places Africa dead center on the map. It is as far from marginalizing as it is possible to be.

And the Mercator projection was designed for tropical maritime navigation so the poles were where the distortions were meant to be. More accuracy at the tropical regions at the expense of the poles.

401 The Latin mass is in latin, the novo ordus is the one everyone dislikes as far as I know.

Issac Watts was not a catholic.

I just like decent music having been a chorister and soloist off and on since I was 15.
The church we go to now nobody has heard a note out of me. In any case being 29 ...+7 or so my voice is not what it was, lack of practise. I have a collection of over 55 solos which I used to do to cover every service.
