Joe Caroff, the unheralded graphic designer whose iconic creations included James Bond's 007 gun logo, posters for West Side Story and A Hard Day's Night and typography for Last Tango in Paris, Manhattan and Rollerball, died Sunday. He was 103. Caroff died one day short of birthday No. 104 in hospice care at his home in Manhattan. ![]() Joe Caroff designed the famous logo - which features a gun as the 7 - for the first Bond film, Dr. No, in 1962. He was paid $300 and it was originally meant to be used as a letterhead for the studio's press release. But it has gone on to be used in every subsequent Bond film, albeit with minor adjustments. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Willowed: southpaws were looked down on because you wiped with the left hand before toilet paper, thus leaving the right hand clean. So that old saying that one hand washes the other takes on more nuance in that light.

As young newly weds on road trips we'd always take the latest Calvin and Hobbes book with us for the long drives. (Mid-1980's) To the end of my working career in aerospace (2024) people had Far Side cartoons in their work spaces. The one you picked ('car') is among the best but so was the 'we're not rocket scientists' one and the dolphins trying to communicate in Spanish with the clueless scientists one. There were some great comic strips in decades past. There were terrific action/adventure strips: Milton Caniff's "Terry and the Pirates" and "Steve Canyon"; Alex Raymond's "Flash Gordon"; Harold Foster's "Prince Valiant"; Burne Hogarth's "Tarzan". And a hybrid of the comic strip and the comic book was Will Eisner's "The Spirit", which was a multi-page comic supplement included with selected newspapers. Each was beautifully drawn, real works of art.
And there were humorous strips, too. George Herriman's "Krazy Kat" was something special - and a great influence on Bill Watterson. (In one "Calvin and Hobbes" strip, the family is visiting an art gallery, and in the background you can see "Dad" looking at a portrait of Offissa Pupp.) The problem with modern strips, as Bill Watterson has pointed out, is that not nearly enough space is given to strips - they're too compressed - and the printing nowadays is distinctly inferior to what it was in the 1930s and 1940s. What we see now is just a shadow of the riches that once were included in the Sunday newspaper. Posted by: Nemo at August 20, 2025 10:38 PM (4RPgu) 141

I still read the comics, go figure. Not sure how wide spread some of these are, but in my paper there is Pearls before swine, Pickles, Marmaduke, and Garfield. Those are usually good. Some others are total frigging waste of ink. Then there are the classics. Peanuts, Blondie, family circus, Hagar, etc, are usually. there were others I grew up with that I'm not seeing in the papers here.

I'm neutral on Nancy and Sluggo. The rest above, I like. Top 3 for me was always Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. After that, I was a fan of Foxtrot. It was on a 3 year clock and reset everyone back to their starting ages again. It took me a while to notice. And I liked Get Fuzzy. The grand champion was Buck Rogers. --------- As an aside, the post where 'Sad Sack' was assigned wa modeled on Camp Hero. Camp Hero was constructed to look like a village. I visited there when some of the original buildings were still being used. "The camp was designed to look like a fishing village to fool enemy aircraft. It’s hard to believe that was the thinking at the time, but the U.S. was worried about an attack that never came other than the famous U boat landing of the German men to blow up Grand Central Station. The big guns were never fired in hostility, although there are some still living in Montauk who remember the test firings, which according to legend shattered windows all over town." The Bloom County strip with Opus saying a poem but couldn't figure out an ending. It wound up ending it with 'Casper Weinberger'. Apparently, Mr. Weinberger saw that strip and replied back to Brethard, with his own poem. I think Brethard framed it. Now, if I can find it on the interwebs. Searching for stuff like this is more difficult these days.

I gave a talk and was supposed to meet Charles Schulz at a Beaglefest - a Peanuts' fan club gathering but that was the year he died. I did get a private tour of his office. I also have a lithograph by Tom Everhart, the only person who has permission to use the Peanuts characters in his art. He is a pretty interesting guy. I also have a signed Bill Menendez drawing of Snoopy. All lovely stuff. I think the only thing better is the occasional art thread that features dogs playing poker or nice boobs.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at August 20, 2025 10:19 PM (LAw/P) Blondie and Dagwood were brought to life on the silver screen in a series of 'Blondie' movies starting in the 1930's until about 1950. They starred Penny Singleton as Blondie and Arthur Lake as Dagwood, a bumbling beta soy who usually got into trouble due to his own stupidity and had to be saved by either Blondie, Daisy the family dog, a small child or a combination thereof As many of you know from my previous unhinged rants, I maintain Arthur Lake is the 'singularity' to which we can trace the entire cultural decline of men, particularly white men. A legend about Apollo 10 is that NASA was afraid the Stafford and Cernan might go rogue and try to land the LM on the Moon. Whether that was a serious worry or not, I'm not sure. They debated about whether to just attempt to land with Apollo 10, but decided they needed the dress rehearsal to develop the landing procedures. Anyway, Snoopy's descent stage was a little too heavy, dry weight wise, and they only loaded the ascent stage with enough fuel to get back up from the planned lowest altitude. Had they tried to land, they wouldn't have a had enough fuel to get back into lunar orbit. The story is this was done on purpose to keep Stafford and Cernan from getting an ideas when they got so close to the surface. I don't know if I really believe that or not. Finally got the new motor mounts for the Suburban, and yes, I can see the degree of sag in the old ones compared with the new. Subtle, but it's there. I decided that, since the engine was listing quite a lot to the left with the old mounts, I should add some shims between engine block and the top half of the mount. So I added 3 1/8" thick washers between the mount cup and the strut bracket, and tack welded them all into a one piece assembly to make it easier to install in the tight space available. Got that part in, and the new rubber mount unit under it, but will not bolt it all down until the right side rubber is also replaced. Tomorrow's job. Figured worse-case with the shim washers: engine winds up canted a little to the right, which will actually improve clearance for the close point on the T-case. In the unlikely event that it winds up canted badly to the right, I guess I can take the shims out.

A comic strip ONT and I was absent for all of it. Sigh. Looks like almost everything got said that needed to be. •Very long-running online comic I didn't see mentioned: Kevin & Kell. •I started reading a book about Krazy Cat creator Harriman. Still plan to go back to it, but it was dauntingly huge. •Tulsa World and Tulsa Tribune, lots of comics and features back in the '60s. I used to read everything. Only one paper left now, a few worthless comics on one page. •I briefly aspired to be a comic strip creator. Had some very nice rejection letters from syndicates. •Little Nemo. A great large-size reprint book used to be available. Mine is somewhere buried in the catacombs. •Mark Evanier has a new book on Peanuts. His site also has blurbs for Pogo collection. Right-hand column at his site, https://www.newsfromme.com •Thimble Theater was where Popeye originated. •Mind Fuel — my online comic strip that didn't quite make it, from 1996 mindfulwebworks.com/art-of/mind-fuel Good Grief! 8h Hamas carried out a highly sophisticated attempt to kidnap IDF soldiers this morning, just a day after they say they agreed to a ceasefire. Hard to believe they actually want one. Long story short: the IDF was ambushed but responded immediately. One terrorist was run over, while Apache helicopters and two drones provided close air support, eliminating about 10 terrorists. My worst experience with a Suburban was the hydraulic equalizer valve equalized the pressure between the calipers at the front and the shoes in the rear. I was just a milled chunk of metal that the lines screwed into. But in their wisdom it was placed in the most awkward spot up under the middle front of the engine.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump plans to sign an executive order on Thursday that would seek to criminalize certain actions related to burning the American Flag, according to NewsNation.
The order would direct Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice to review cases where someone burned an American Flag and determine whether charges can be brought under existing laws such as public nuisance, disorderly conduct or potential environmental violations, but would not criminalize the actual burning of the American Flag, which would violate the First Amendment of the Constitution Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 21, 2025 02:33 AM (671IT) 474

My dad bought an F-100 in 1958 to move to Alaska from the Lower 48. Baby blue. Curved glass. Chrome bumpers. Big metal dashboard. No radio.
I learned to drive in that beast. I felt like a Queen driving up so high. Dad built a camper on the back so Mom would to into the woods with us. For some reason, he painted it green. No idea why, except that he was an engineer so somewhat aesthetically challenged. Every kid in high school wanted that truck. That was in the 70's. My brother took it to airplane school in the Lower 48 in the 80's. Replaced the springs, that was about it. It finally died for good in the 90's. Ford built to last. I kinda miss it. Clyde belonged to my late BF. Knew there were problems with it when BF passed, but took me a while to get around to working on it. Appeared that the oil pump failed & ruined the engine. So, I ordered a reman unit from parts store & went to work.

My 87 Ramcharger that I grudgingly sold sported a great running 5.9 (360). I tweaked it just a bit, RV cam & flattop pistons with valve reliefs--the original pistons were dished to lower the compression ratio, 1.5 rocker arms and a real picky 3 angle valve job plus a double roller timing chain. A sweet, solid engine that would spin the rears on a full throttle start. Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at August 21, 2025 03:44 AM (hKoQL) 501

Doonesbury - read the pre-Reagan strips. The election of Reagan broke Gary Trudeau's senses of humor and perspective, and the strip hasn't been readable for 45 years. But before that, frequently hilarious and highly recommended.

Bloom County - great in its first run, my second favorite. Great memories of college newspaper (early 80s) publishing a week's worth of strips in its once-a-week edition.
But Breathed lost the lane with his follow-up and short-lived Outland and then his Sunday-only strip Opus. Like Gary Trudeau, he needed to follow Leno's advice- 'Tell joke, get paid.' - and tried to do something that made statements. Posted by: Kreskin at August 21, 2025 07:24 AM (tDZig) 512
