Not a big fan of post-impressionism as it can get too abstract, too concerned with technique and less on the subject. But this painting, with its use of bright, discrete colors and perspective manages to create an emotional scene with the technique. It is calm, somewhat removed by perspective from details, but capturing a peaceful quietude. Anyone who has enjoyed a quiet, still water scene would appreciate this.

https://x.com/ElectionWiz/status/ 1958159805857632355 The NYT did a dive on partisan voter registration over the last four years, and the picture is terrible for Democrats while largely positive for Republicans. Democrats are hemorrhaging voter registrations. Republicans are mostly growing, and where they're not, they're mostly just not losing as much as Democrats are. I just wonder why 2026 is supposed to follow "political gravity" or "normal trends" at this point other than, "it's an easy pattern to point to". I thought of polynikes when I saw today's painting. Bright but natural colors that are distinct but blend enough to flow into shapes and able to give an emotional feel to the scene. I was reminded of his more subtle landscapes.

Johan de Witt, former Grand Pensionary (Prime Minister) of Holland and his brother are lynched by an angry mob who ate their body parts, including their roasted livers. As Prime Minister of Holland, he had neglected the Dutch army causing the Dutch Republic to be easily invaded by an alliance of countries that included England and France. He and his brother were blamed for the defeats and were lynched in The Hague, where their bodies were cannibalized by the mob. The lesson: protect your nation’s borders, or else. I don’t know if it’s an over statement if over 50% were commies. De Gaulle did save France from becoming communist after the war. It was not a certainty they wouldn’t.
Posted by: polynikes =========== One of the issues with any survey of such as that a lot of people claimed Resistance cred after the fact. Of course, any estimates of the actual composition of the Resistance are just estimates which the political divisions in France. From what I recall of the matters, urban cells had more Socialist/Communists in them. As you got further from Paris, it was more DeGaullist, etc. Places like Brittany and Normandy had relatively few Socialist Communists as did the northern border regions with Spain. Marseilles and the areas adjacent to Catalonia in Spain were more Socialist/Communist. Even in France, there was a divide between the Socialists and the Communists before and during the war including Resistance cells. Posted by: whig at August 20, 2025 11:04 AM (ctrM5) 309
