The Classical Saturday Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

IMG_1964.JPG

Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Little Suamico)

1. This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2. Be kind, be nice. Even trolls and certain weirdos have feelings.
3. No. Don't. Even. Ask. No running with sharp objects.
4. Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

7/9 - Teresa in Fort Worth asks for prayers for her niece Amanda, and her husband Barkley. They are at Vanderbilt Hospital, where Amanda seems to be rejecting her second heart transplant. She is only 40 years old, and has been having heart issues for 20 years. She had her first heart transplant 4 years ago, and things are not looking good.
8/2 Update – Amanda isn’t out of the woods yet, but her condition is improving each day.

7/11 – JR requested prayers for the families of those killed in Gaza.
8/2 – JR asked for prayers for the starving children in Gaza.

7/11 – Screaming in digital asked for prayers for her mother. Mom is still recovering from a UTI plus 3 falls within the last couple of days. During the day, there is some improvement. But once she starts sundowning, she is terrified and clings to whatever she can hold onto. She only weighs about 105-110, and isn’t eating much, but it is hard to move her when she is like that. If she doesn’t improve her mobility and cooperate/help with transfers to and from the wheelchair, etc., and consistently feed herself, she won’t be able to stay at the assisted living facility.
7/19 Update – Screaming in digital’s mother passed away.

7/11 – Matthew Kant Cipher requested prayers for Layne, a family friend who is also his son’s FIL. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer and is awaiting further test results to determine whether they treat with chemo or remove his bladder. As of now, it appears to be contained. Please pray that he and his family are blessed with God’s love and grace through this time of trial.
8/13 Update – Layne has had some good news. His PET scan indicated that the cancer hasn’t spread beyond his bladder. Also, it seems to be a less aggressive form of cancer than originally diagnosed. The Horde prayers are blessing him greatly and are immensely appreciated. Please keep them coming!

7/18 – Tecumseh Tea had a heart attack and needs prayers.
7/23 Update – Tecumseh Tea had a Type 2 heart attack, which is considered mild. She sends prayers of thanks for that! The angiogram showed a healthy heart, with little plaque and clean arteries, so no stent was needed. They did find a myocardial bridge, which is a congenital defect. The goal is to keep BP 140/70 with a pulse of less than 60, but so far they have not been able to meet that goal. She can’t get a cardiologist appointment until 8/22, so the GP is helping, but so far they have not been able to get the right BP meds. Please pray for a sooner visit, and the right meds that work for her, and answers.

7/19 – Huerfano asked for prayers for a rapid and full recovery for brother R, who had hernia surgery. He cannot see his grandsons until he has recovered. He misses them, and they miss him.

7/19 – Farmer Bob posted an update. He is doing well. He is competing in 5Ks and triathalons, and sends his thanks for the prayers. His ex-wife has “gone off the deep end” (or just remains so), with weird lies and accusations. She could use a prayer or two.

7/19 – Tonypete asked for prayers for Cheri and Gretchen, church ladies of his acquaintance. Cheri had a medical incident while driving and veered off the road and struck a number of pedestrians, sending 3 or 4 to the hospital. Gretchen and her husband were passengers in the car and her husband had a heart attack after the accident and died. Cheri is just sick about it and has kind of snapped. Gretchen has lost her best friend of 65 years.

7/19 – H asked for prayers for Brandon, a homeless man in San Marcos, TX, who has a broken ankle and has to seek care for that injury, specifically prayers that he would see God providing for him. He is asking for God to help him advocate for his care.

7/23 – D sent an update on his wife Susan, as they deal with cancer. The last few weeks have been a roller coaster. They cannot operate on the cancer, because it has spread too much. They have started chemo and hope to get it to shrink. Susan’s gallbladder is inflamed, but they cannot remove it, due to the chemo, and her blood sugar is having issues. Thanks to everyone for their prayers; Susan has pulled through all of this and is looking great as they keep praying to the Lord.

7/26 – Stateless asked for prayers for his neighbors. The nice lady across the street lost her husband of 30 years about 3 months ago. And a different neighbor lost his beloved wife of 34 years in July.

7/26 – Fenelon Spoke requested prayers for J, a dear lady who attends her church. J has been going downhill since she had a heart procedure several months ago and now cannot speak. She may have dementia and is living in an assisted living facility.

7/26 – Coelacanth sent his thanks for prayers for his son. He has come a _very_ long way but could still use more prayers as he deals with vax and black mold injuries. Also, Coelacanth cut his left hand pretty badly and severed two tendons. He will be on light duty at work for 6+ weeks. Prayers are appreciated.

7/26 - Brother Tim was discharged from the cancer rehab facility and has returned to his routine of living out of hotel rooms, while working on better housing prospects. He is praising God for all the blessings and mercies!
7/30 Update – Brother Tim found out that the cancerous mass impinged on a blood vessel. He needs a full body scan to make sure it has not spread. He is relieved that he only needs radiation and not chemo to make sure the original cancer stays gone. He’s also out of PTO. He said that sometimes it feels like 2025 will be the death of him – possibly literally.

8/1 – Jmel requested prayers for her husband, whose father just passed away after fighting cancer for two years.

8/2 – “Perfessor” Squirrel asked for prayers. His job seems to be in dire jeopardy.

8/2 – Teresa in Fort Worth received the good news that her cancerous tumors continue to shrink. She had some not-so-good news, that she has 2 pulmonary emboli, and has been put on a blood thinner, which should dissolve the clots and prevent any new ones.
8/4 Update – The oncological surgeon said everything is looking great. After her next CT scan, they will be planning surgery to remove the tumors. The largest tumor is showing signs of calcification, which means that it is dying.

8/2 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for P. She was to have an experimental but successful heart procedure which the surgeon thinks will help her arrythmia, pain, and fatigue, but insurance will not pay for it. Prayer that rough places are made smooth for her to have this procedure.

8/4 – Moki posted that s/he could use some prayers. A daughter has gone AWOL, claiming that they don’t love her.
8/9 Update – Moki reported that her daughter has come home.

8/4 – Inogame asked for continued prayers. Baby #5 continues to grow, and the genetic test came back clean. Prayers for mom and baby (daughter #4), and also dad and son are appreciated.

8/13 – MkY sent an update on his wife Judy’s battle with cancer. Her immunotherapy is scheduled for every 3 weeks. Six weeks ago, she had a cold and had to skip it, and it was the best she had felt in a year. So they skipped the last one, too. She is scheduled for it again on 8/14. She’s not hurting. She is sleeping. She’s not healthy, but she’s got stage 4 cancer! September is the next CT scan, and they will find out if the immunotherapy is making enough of an impact to continue. They are very grateful for the prayers.

8/13 – MkY would appreciate prayers for Butch and Harry, who have worked with him for 20 years. Both have recently been diagnosed with cancer. Butch has liver cancer and Harry has cancer in his larynx.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Got a note from my medical service my doctor I have seen since 1883-4 has passed away. Seen him probably a year or two ago.He was still practicing and had to be in his late 80s to 90s

6 Prayers for all those listed above, and especially for those held in the silence of our hearts. Trusting the Lord, he hears our pleas.

On a personal note, had my last chemo this past week. Short break before radiation starts. Everything looks good so far. I get fatigued very quickly so I have to try and build back strength. Can't thank the oncology nurses enough. They were amazing and really helped me get through treatments.

Not quite so cool. Hopefully the cancer is already too stunned to know what's hitting it.

12 Thank you Mis. Hum, and Annie's Stew

That cat doesn't look like Snowflake, who happily comes into my room multiple times before 7am wondering when her food bowl will be filled. To her credit, she avoids waking me from my sleep cycles.

Still, there's a VERY FAT CAT inside her trying to get out. But with her 2/3rds of cat food a day and tuna on Saturday, she's still hovering around 10 pounds.

Everyone have a happy day.

Today is the 48th anniversary of Elvis's death (or "death" if you think so). Actually, I think he died a long time before and his corpse was just hanging around singing.

21 My doctor told me that if I didn't get the clot shot ("vaccine") I would be dead in a year.

That was 4 years ago.

I, too, expect to get a note from the practice informing me of his demise.

I read Peter Guralnick's biography of Elvis. Lots of people think Colonel Tom Parker was an evil influence and ruined Elvis's career, but I think even without him Elvis would have ended up in pretty much the same place.

37 Had to drag Pooky to the doctor yesterday to get him diagnosed with a bladder infection. He's on antibiotics for the next week, which will make him feel crummy but will hopefully lessen the frequency of his bathroom visits. He wasn't sleeping for the past month because he had to go to the bathroom at least once an hour. This is his third UTI in two years, so we've got a urology appointment in a few weeks. I'm hoping it's just bad hygiene, which is common for depression, and not something like cancer, which he's at a huge risk for due to his radiation exposure.

53 Fen, thanks for the article. I don't have an opinion on my spiritual leader as of yet. I just want him to follow the words of Jesus and grow our church. We need priests, priests that can somehow bring the word of God to our youth and keep them in the church past their confirmation. Of course that starts with their parents, then the parish priest. MT is vast and we have the Diocese of Helena that covers 1/2 of it and that's a lot for one Bishop and his staff to cover. Parish priests help the Bishop and ours are spread thin.

Henry Fonda and James Stewart were the sorts of actors who "underplay" -- they didn't telegraph every emotion. I prefer Jimmy over Henry and always have. They could often have played the same roles; I can see Henry doing Harvey and Jimmy playing Mr. Roberts or Tom Joad. Their teaming in The Cheyenne Social Club is a classic example of two greats playing off each other to good effect.

112 The thing about guys like Wayne was that the typecasting was on purpose. They weren't interested in "building their range," they were making money by doing a job. Most of them had day jobs before they were "discovered" and approached acting like bricklaying or anything else.

Plus, Hollywood was much more in tune with the culture. They made religious films and did them well. They weren't religious, they just liked cash. Hollywood today looks at cash cows and says "Nah, more gay and lame."

125 Elvis showed a lot of acting talent when he was allowed to. His performance in King Creole is solid: The songs his "Danny" sings are restricted to an indoor nightclub, and the plot is a crime story with, get this, Walter Matthau (in his early days) as the crime boss. If Elvis had been allowed to continue as a real actor, who knows, we might be speaking of him today in the same tones we use for Paul Newman.

They filmed the movie here in Nawlins -- used the exterior of my grade school as the exterior of Danny's high school when he gets expelled for fighting -- and did a pretty good job showing other areas besides the French Quarter.

A = attack
B = bomber
C = cargo/transport
F = fighter
H = vertical / helicopter
K= tanker/multi-purpose
and so on...

During the 50's and 60's the so-called "Century Series" of fighters were built; F-100 Super Sabre, F-104 Starfighter and so on. I think someone thought that was getting a bit over the top, so they resurrected the old "P" designations (Pursuit: as in P-51) as "F" and started the numbering over (F-4 Phantom) and so on.

Same with the bombers.

YMMV

He wasn't the pope we wanted, but he was the pope we needed because he demonstrated many important things, such as: the pope is not a dictator who can change Church teachings at will.

He also exposed the pedo network in his efforts to cover it up.

Finally, he introduced a whole new generation to the Traditional Latin Mass, demonstrating once again how the Streisand Effect functions.

157 John Wayne portrayed masculine men, because he was a masculine man, and there were plenty of roles which called for the masculine, hero-type in his era. I don't think it was so much type casting as it was that he fit the paradigm for what a man was supposed to be, at the time (and, imho, always), ergo, plenty of roles for him to play a type of character that was a good fit/comfortable. He was, I think, a great actor, much like Tom Cruise, shunned by the Academy for his politics versus his capabilities. My favorite is The Quiet Man.

I'm just a dumb pew-sitter, so intricate theological discussions are beyond me, but here's the way I see it.

There are things we just don't question. Force equals mass time acceleration. The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second. The atomic mass of cobalt is 58.933. Sure, we may fiddle with things at the 10th decimal as we learn more, but otherwise these things are fixed. That's the equivalent of the Magesterium of the Church.

Now if the IUPAC were to say one fine day that the atomic mass of cobalt is somewhere between 55 and 60, not only would there be chaos in applications where cobalt is used, you'd also have real questions about the authority (and sanity) of the IUPAC in doing such a thing. That's the equivalent of Francis's pontificate.

I think the whole Fiducia Supplicans was a bit of "Pay attention to me!" and it backfired in a major way. It wasn't even his work, but Cardinal Fernandez, who was then dispatched to apologize to the Copts, who were on the bring of entering Communion with Rome and froze the talks as a result.

We're doing quite fine, thanks.

And it's not just the pope, but the traditions and the Magisterium. Not a single of the Reformation churches is doing well. All have splintered into literally thousands of factions.

I'm optimistic that Leo will finish the work of bringing the Copts in to Communion and it will be interesting to see how much of the East/West split really is about politics and culture rather than faith. The pie fight within Orthodoxy over Ukraine has shown that our Eastern Rite brothers have problems of their own where a unifying figure could be of some use.

Some years ago I wrote a short story set in 1937 where Robinson, under his birth name, travels to his native Romania and encounters a vampire. No. They elected an American because the Church needs American money and energy. Catholicism remains a vital force in the US, and the seminaries are packed. That's not the case in Europe or much of South America.

Africa is thriving, but it is poor. American money can strengthen missionary work. It can also strength the Church against CCP persecution, which Francis was willing to tolerate (to his great shame).

If I knew anything about the insurance business from the inside, I'd write a crime story about Keyes the insurance expert! The story goes that Robinson asked Cain to write a separate, second story featuring Keyes, so that EGR could play him again. Cain, I think, was in favor of doing that, but never did.

They released the statement after Trump's summit saying that "No limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot have a veto against Ukraine‘s pathway to the EU and NATO". This just shows you how serious they are about peace. This is what caused the war in the first place. I hope that the Eu collapses into a puddle of crap (that it really is without US subsidies).

Posted by: Bulg at August 16, 2025

***
The story I've heard is that after The Apartment came out, a woman accosted Fred in the grocery and complained that she'd taken her kids to that movie and been outraged at the subject matter. Of course Fred had nothing to do with the creation of the movie, but he decided that henceforth he would never play another bad guy, and didn't.

There is a fine 1950s Western called Face of a Fugitive where he plays a train robber who has a crisis of conscience. The film also has a ticking clock like all good thrillers, a deadline he's up against, so there is even more suspense.

264 190 Wasn't Soylent Green Edwatd G Eobinson's last movie?
Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory, red heifer owner at August 16, 2025

The prime reason I still love that movie is that it contains one of the most poignant scenes in all of film history - Eddie G. Robinson’s death scene, which is a beautiful and touching type of funeral, at the end of which he is peacefully euthanized.
You see, he knew that he was actually dying at the time, as did those on set with him. (He died 2 weeks after filming finished). Carlton Heston’s in that scene are real, they’re not for the character, they’re for Eddie G.
And the scene is truly a heartfelt and personal goodbye from Eddie himself to his entire career, to all who loved watching him, to his life. How many men have ever been ever to stage their own funeral in such a lavish way?
Soylent Green is worth watching for that one scene alone, a truly transcendent bit of film.

One of the most fascinating elements is that a naval vessel was involved. This is highly unusual. China typically uses its Coast Guard and 'maritime militia' fishing fleets to assert control. This is the first time the PLAAN has been involved, and it doesn't come off as looking very competent.

For one; they continue to benefit from the revenue streams. For another, they're not outed as traitors to the US.

There's likely a whole raft of issues that would befall Trump if he "just nuked all that" and let Ukraine and Russia duke it out.

It's a crap shoot either way. Personally, I'd let the Republicans know what's about to go down and give them a day or two so they can "untangle" themselves from Ukraine. Or let them suffer the consequences.

Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory, red heifer owner at August 16, 2025

***
It was. And he never won a standard Oscar either, despite being a star and acclaimed actor for forty years. He was voted a special Oscar after his death, I think.

Some years ago I wrote a short story set in 1937 where Robinson, under his birth name, travels to his native Romania and encounters a vampire. I flatter myself that I captured the real man, as I imagine him to have been, and also his tough screen persona delivering a challenge to an anti-Semite he meets in the hotel dining room.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 16, 2025 09:32 AM (omVj0)

From what I heard about the Soylent Green death scene with Robinson and Heston, Heston learned just before the scene was shot that Robinson did, in fact, have terminal cancer, and that he's probably die after the movie was shot. The tears that he shed for his long-time friend Robinson were real.

293 Just yesterday my doc told me I have shingles… which surprised me. This is my second case of shingles in 3 years. Surprised me because I mainly had pain in my hip/leg that felt like a pulled muscle… but the doc saw the beginnings of the characteristic rash so fortunately caught it early. I’m taking an antiviral and a prednisone med pack…. Seems to feel better already I think it’s gonna be a mild case (just like last time). But I don’t like it… I’m “29” but I’m not 89… I’m too young to have shingles twice!

296 From what I can tell (which is not much admittedly) the Putin summit was a bit of a bust. I think at this point Trump should wash his hands of it, impose stiff sanctions on Russia and stop aiding Ukraine and let nature take its course. Putin has the upper hand, he knows it and he’s not gonna make a deal that little megalomaniac Z will accept. It is the historic norm that to end a war one side has to win and the other has to lose
Posted by: LinusVanPelt at August 16, 2025 10:07 AM (c99AZ)

Any negotiated settlement would be preferable to the continuation of the war. At this point, Russia is in the position to state its position, and wait for the rest of the negotiators to agree. If they give up anything, it will be an act of mercy.

If Trump is calling it a success, that means he's willing to stop listening to the warmongers in Europe and his own government, and recognize the reality of the situation: A negotiated settlement means fewer deaths. And that's the primary objective he should be pursuing.

Yesterday Putin told Trump if he had been President, the war never would have happened.

It's not Russia that wanted this war. It was the warmongers in Washington DC who caused it. And shortly after it started Russia was at the table, with a negotiated settlement in hand, with Ukraine ready to sign it.

Washington and London prevented that from happening.

I really wish Americans would wake up to the fact that OUR government are the ones who perpetuate wars across the globe.

I think there are business deals, economic deals which will benefit everyone in the region. Peace deals, trade deals have been furiously ongoing. The Russian economy runs on Russian oil and gas. The Ukrainian economy runs on hand outs, largely from us. Trump can ruin the Russian economy and what passes for the Ukrainian economy like Master Blaster.

Trump has ended 6 wars already including some that have gone on for decades. And he did it with trade. He didn't walk off that stage with his arm around Vlad because he failed.

Probably H. Beam Piper.

The interesting thing about Piper was that he was an Analog writer, and he pulled a lot of his science from Ananlog

Hans Bethe had the reputation of enjoying getting crossways with colleagues and random people.

If it doesn't include any of the territory he's not currently holding, then why aren't the Russians sitting purely on the defensive?

360 I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

The US is one actor of many, and often deceived by our allies or our leaders. I cannot accept that the US is the cause of, and the solution to, all of the world's problems.

The internal divisions within the Soviet Union were never expected to be external boundaries, and in fact were drawn in such a way as to guarantee conflict, which they have done admirably.

It is entirely rational to rectify them based on demography and geography, and there is quite the irony that the US gov't considers these boundaries sacrosanct but had no problem carving up Serbia - a fact very much present in Russian thinking.

All US policy in the las 30 years can be summed up as: "It's okay when WE do it."

Trump is the only actual realist (in the true term) since Reagan.

Probably because they don't want to spend the foreseeable future holding a line against proxy attacks from the EU through Romania and Ukraine.
They have a problem, Zelenskyyyyyyy and his minions are not capable of making and holding to an agreement, they have broken every promise they have made. The EU is not capable of making or enforcing an agreement, they have been right up on the line between proxy and active involvement. Biden and the Lindsay Grahams were actively cheering the war on.

Collapsing Ukraine is one way to solve the problem of what to do about Ukraine and the EU. Another solution is to negotiate a peace, instead of a victory, but that requires something that doesn't let it all happen again in 20 years.

Posted by: Kindltot at August 16, 2025 11:10 AM (rbvCR)

375 The US deep state has largely been running Ukraine since they overthrew the government in 2014. Putin is well aware of that. So is Zelensky. They didn't just pick Ukraine out of a hat. They chose this war.

The idiotic Russia collusion hoax didn't just harm Trump and his supporters, it turned Russia from a country the Obama/Biden administration said they wanted better relations with when they sent that criminal Hillary and her misspelled RESET button to make it happen into a pariah. And somehow half this country adopted Ukraine, a country most couldn't find on a map.

We sent hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine to support this war and nobody has any idea where that money went. We were the driving force behind the war not Europe or NATO. Now we aren't.

It's well passed time for the insanity to end and everyone knows it.
