Thursday Overnight Open Thread - August 14, 2025 [Doof]

Howdy Hordelings! Oh - you were expecting an ONT from Weird Dave? Well...

doof-dave-not-here.jpg

That's right. All your Thursday night ONT are belong to me now!

In case you missed this from Weird Dave last week:

Personal Note

This is the last Thursday ONT I will be writing. I've been doing this for almost ten years, I'm tired boss. Don't worry, I'll still be kicking your weekend off right by meeting your meme needs on the Friday ONT, but starting next week Thursdays will be covered by the eminently capable Doof. It's been a pleasure and an honor to entertain you Morons all these years.

So, time to step on in and see how "eminently capable" this Doof guy really is!

Happy Anniversary, Fellow Rush Nerds!

What anniversary you ask? On August 14, 1974 - Neil Peart Plays His First Show With Rush

This August concert was a short, low-key opening slot for Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Uriah Heep. (The trio isn’t even listed on an ad promoting the show.) The band reportedly opened with “Finding My Way.” Poor-quality audio of the song doesn’t seem to betray the band’s nerves, although it does give a nice snapshot of Lee’s astonishing vocal range and Peart’s already ferocious style.

***

Peart died in 2020. His final concert with Rush had taken place on Aug. 1, 2015 -- roughly 41 years after Peart's fateful show debut.

WTF Did I Just Read?

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I do think I am smarter than the average bear. After reading this - I feel unsmart.

Physics faces its greatest challenge: a new theory argues that time has three dimensions and space is like "an add-on"

doof-space-thingy.jpg

Theories about space and time have always been the great misunderstood ones for the general public, but one of the great mysteries to work on and investigate for physicists and scholars of these subjects.

For many years, researchers have intertwined additional spatial dimensions, exotic particles or string-like objects into a single narrative. In each of these cases, one of the issues was resolved, but another was left unanswered.

A new theory has now been put forward that could dismantle everything we have taken for granted so far, and that is that the approach to space and time, argued in the ticking of the clock, may be much stranger and richer than the simple advance through seconds, minutes and hours.

All particles, fields and even energy itself emerge as different ways in which the triple-layer rhythm can change. "My work transforms the concept of an interesting mathematical possibility into a physically testable theory with multiple independent verification channels"

Another One From Our Younger Days is Gone

A fun show from a simpler time. Can we take a moment to appreciate the acting chops one needs to play that kind of deadpan role? She did it quite well - especially for someone as young as she was at the time.

Divisive Issue?

Why does this bother people??

doof-backin-parking.jpg
Click for a thread on X

I will back into a parking spot almost always. I do it for various reasons - none of them are for attention. Better visibility and easier maneuverability when leaving my parking spot are the main reasons. I'd also rather do my reversing moves when I've already been driving, as opposed to when I first get into my vehicle. The only times I do not back in are when I need easier access to the cargo area - like loading bags from the grocery store or bulky items from Home Depot or somewhere similar.

What's interesting to me is how much it seems to bother people who don't park this way. Numerous people I know have mentioned how much they hate "backer inners". The comments in that X thread demonstrate how emotional this is for people who are opposed to back-in parking. While it seems to me that those of us who prefer "combat style" parking, don't get emotional about those who prefer pull-in style. Park however you want. But even pull-in parkers are highly likely to pull-through if the spot in front of their spot is open. Why? Because it's more convenient to exit! Thus proving the point that the front facing out is the better way to park! So why get worked up over those of us who back in to our spots?

Where do you land on this?

On The Subject of Vehicles

This is kewl!

Estonian Theater Stages Unique Romeo and Juliet Play with Construction Vehicles as Actors

doof-Romula-ja-Julia.jpg

Estonian theater Kinoteater recently staged one of the most unusual versions of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” featuring heavy-duty vehicles as actors and a limestone quarry as the stage.
“Romula ja Julia” was a nearly wordless performance that relied on the movements and interactions of dozens of vehicles to convey the classic love story. Romeo was represented by a rally truck, while Juliet was a red Ford pickup truck, and the climactic duel between Tybalt and Mercutio was interpreted by two excavators dangling their metal buckets in front of each other. Designed as one big experiment about what it means to stage a Shakespearean classic today and whether artists can find new ways to do it, Romula ja Julia attracted international attention because of its unusual cast.

Check out the whole story at the link. It includes a video of the performance.

-----

On the subject of Romeo and Juliet, I'd like to callback to T Rex's top-notch ONT from last night where he featured the topic of cover songs. I scanned the thread and comments and did not see any mention of this song:

Romeo and Juliet -
Original studio version by Dire Straits

Dire Straits Live At The Hammersmith Odeon, London, July 1983

29 Mrs. QED warns me about ever backing in to a parking space again. I backed our minivan into a space in a parking garage that had low-hanging concrete beams across the front of the space. This isn’t a problem if you pull in. Or if you back a car in. Major problem for a minivan! I was watching the side mirrors so as not to hit the car next to me and watching the backup camera. Pro tip: the backup camera is looking down not up. As soon as I stopped the van there was a slight “tink” and the whole rear window shattered. I guess I a moron.

42 Many new cars can back themselves into parking spots, I wonder if the attitude of combat parking will change as more and more people let their vehicles manage the parking.

Everyone in the household back in parks - 100% of the time in the garage.

Fun Fact: The local police make a habit of patrolling through hotel parking lots grabbing license plates with their ALPRs.

Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at August 14, 2025 10:10 PM (a4flb)

43 Dropping and running but here's my take on parking:
It's a *lot* easier to back into an open space than a constrained one. The way a *lot* of people drive I do NOT want them trying to back into the space next to my vehicle.

But for those who are good at, yeah - park how you want, it's no skin off my nose.

73 I maintain that back-in parkers are of a different, more elevated sort than the whimsical, don't-bother-thinking-about-the-future pull-inners. We are like ants, thinking ahead and storing up supplies for the winter, while the profligate grasshoppers simply go for the easiest way to do things in the here and now. They consume today and don't worry about tomorrow. We, however, are prepared for the fast getaway in case of emergency.

In short, the back-inners are made of sterner stuff and will be the ones to whom the loafers look when things get tough. We will laugh at them when they do.

97 For those of you mathematically and physics-ly inclined here's a paper by Max Tegmark, "On the Dimensionality of Spacetime" that goes into the big picture of the number of dimensions:

https://tinyurl.com/26vcvnlb

Click on the PDF link to get the text of the paper. There he shows how physics can likely only work with you guessed it, 1 dimension of time and 3 dimensions of space.

This is quite profound. A simple example of why more than 3 spatial dimensions don't work. In 4D or higher, there would be no stable gravitational orbits. Gravity would be inverse cube (in the Newtonian limit) and even a simple circular orbit would not be stable to perturbations. In general, with 2 more spatial dimensions, more than 1 time dimension makes things unpredictable. Solutions to the equations would be quite chaotic. Physics just wouldn't work.

How about 1 time and less than 3 spatial dimensions? Too simple. While Newtonian gravity would do like EM and be a 1/r force, Einstein GR gravity would not propagate outside of matter. There could be no vacuum field of Einstein tensor gravity with only 2 spatial dimensions. Gravity thus wouldn't work at all.

Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Something Smells Funny In Here at August 14, 2025 10:23 PM (L/fGl)

Makes me think, One of the first truly "modern" works of literature was La Celestina written by Fernando Rojas in the late 1400's. It is similar to Romeo and Juliet, if Shakespeare had been writing a Southern Gothic novel based in New Orleans. Calixto meets and falls in love with Melibea, and his corrupt servant enrolls servants from both houses to get help from a local madame and avowed witch, who designs a way for Calixto to seduce Melibea. Which he does with the Celestina's charms, and then in a hurried escape from her room, fearing her menfolk were coming, falls down the ladder, breaking his neck. Melibea is left in the final scene crying in her personal despair since she is left known as an adulteress, and un-marriageable, and Calixto's servants are killed as bandits by the city guard as they try to run away.

The Rockies were cruising to losing between 125 to 130 games. Mets fans were ecstatic.

Then they got hot and screwed up everything holy. Mets fans were suddenly wearing bags on their heads again.

Currently the Rockies are on track to lose between 119-121 games this seasons. Mets fans are praying for the Rockies to do their part.

I somehow don't see this going well for me. At all. I once got in hot water with my teen sons for asking a cop why I was pulled over as I gave my ID and papers. Please note that I love police. This guy pulled out in front of me as I was turning left, on the light. He messed up but I did not honk at him. It was a mile from our neighborhood. He then zipped behind me and followed me til I turned. I knew I did not do anything wrong and simply asked. I was not mean or anything. He gave me a warning about something. My sons hissed from the backseat all the way home that I did wrong.

First of all, I would run over an undocumented alien before I'd transport one in my trunk.

When these same sons were in junior high I had to drive them weekly and parallel park. They were impressed.

I hate Inmate #163214 of Idaho. Along with everyone else in the world. Due to my being near a serial killer in college, this one bothered me more than most murders. So I read about things on websleuths. I don't comment, I just read if something happens. Like that wife killer Morphew in CO who was rearrested.

The Bug Eyed Cretin is a big Mother's Boy (he calls his parental unit Mother and Father). I guess Sister whatever. Anyway, spent hours on the phone each day talking to his Mother in PA from WA. My parents were lucky, when I was in college far away, to get a letter from me once a month.

He is OCD. This prison deal only lets him shower every other day, which will force him to clean with toilet water, I guess. He's in solitary. So the other murderers take turns yelling stuff at him in the vents, which is making him whine (and making me laugh). No pity for him at all for what he did to those kids.

He also does not like hair (for some reason) and some hope if he goes into gen pop hairy men mess with him. I know about gen pop from watching Prison Break.

333 So today DOJ delivered "demand letters" to all "sanctuary" jurisdictions. In it Bondi says officials using their positions to obstruct federal immigration enforcement or facilitating/inducing illegal immigration "may be subject to criminal charges".

Well well well.

Would be nice if some expert outside laid out the technicalities of any overdue federal criminal crack-down on public officials - might help explain timing, and details. I'm assuming this letter is a t-crossing first step in any such crack-down.

Of course as the US has suffered a widespread collapse in its civic culture, and, incredibly, it may well be difficult to get convictions for slam-dunk lawlessness in this area, there can be strategery involved as well. Betting there are places where a real jury could still be found. And where not possible ..... "punishment is the process" rings a bell.

Posted by: lin-duh at August 14, 2025 11:35 PM (VCgbV)

No. It's his power move to keep this secret forever.

It also won't bring those kids back. Some say he's an incel and was a 28yr old virgin, hates pretty girls. Because he is super weird and creepy. He'd ask waitresses where they lived, did they have a boyfriend, and for their phone number. In PA they complained and he was asked to never come back.

Once he got to WA his FATHER asked a guy in the apt building to be his friend. I think the parents must be a bit off, too. He was once super fat, got bariatric or something, then his Father unit paid for the excess skin removal. A heroin addict to top it all off. Then wanted to be a cop. Tried to get a job in WA and the guy said he was weird. This was the trend: weird. With those googly eyes.

Some think he was into voyerism with one or two girls. That he probably wanted the perfect murder of one then things went haywire and he killed four kids. The poor boy and gf were collateral, I think. Some died thankfully in their sleep after drinking. Two fought back.

Thought he was so smart. Could become a serial killer and never get caught. Yet he got caught on his first kills. Such a rookie.

The serial killer you don't really hear about that really scared the crap out of me was Israel Keyes, thankfully in the self-decided past tense. Dude was scary. Planted murder buckets across the country; to this day nobody knows how many are still buried. Those plastic buckets with lids contained murder kits, gun, knife, rope, etc. He'd fly to a city five-six hundred miles away from a bucket. He'd rent a car, drive to get the bucket, then go in some other direction hundreds of miles to commit murder/s. Then bury the bucket again and fly home.

Seriously fucked up dude. Watch some of his interrogations. Gives one nightmares knowing people like him are out there walking among us.

Prison Loaf. It’s termed Nutriloaf. There is the recipe available online, natch. All kinds of good stuff!

It is not vegetarian. It contains all the necessary nutrients and has been used to ensure compliance for difficult inmates, as it is not especially savory. Of course bedwetter judges take a dim view of these sorts of things. I think Sheriff Arpaio was a proponent. Sometimes they have to feed violent people who probably do belong in a cage, and should not have access to metal implements or anything.

In some countries, it is not a given principle that they are responsible for feeding you. Hope you have money, or family or friends who will bring you something.

Our eldest son, a girlfriend collector like his father, dated three Amy's and four Christina's by his second year of college. And these I remember due to their names. To us, they were Amy the First, etc.

The Christina's were the worst, and no offense to any Moron with that name. One was a ho, by what I could tell. She had a tongue ring that I learned about, to my sorrow.

One was the daughter of an airline pilot. They were Greek and only wanted her to date Greeks. We are not Greek. One day he called me at the hospital to say she'd fainted at our house, as they were supposedly studying and I knew about it. She stood up and in a swoon collapsed in a dainty fall onto the sofa. He grabbed the phone and dialed 91 of 911 and she came to. A miracle!

I questioned him if she was clammy and sweaty. Nope! He carried her (like Rhett Butler and Scarlett) to HIS bed. She refused to go to the ED (where I worked), which was a clue. A friend came to follow him home in her car (he carried her helpless self again).

At this point of him telling me this I start laughing hard. She stalked him at UF and he had enough.

369 Berserker,

The crazy thing is Keyes lived in Alaska. He was in the military in the Pacific Northwest somewhere. Started burying buckets. Victims were random. Two murders he admitted to were in Vermont, a couple in a farmhouse. The local police were completely baffled by the murders and Keyes' confession solved it.

From Wiki: On his murder trips, he kept his mobile phone turned off and paid for items with cash. For the Currier murders, Keyes flew to Chicago, where he rented a car to drive 1,000 miles to Vermont. He then used a "murder kit" he had hidden two years earlier to execute the murders.
--
Keyes confessed to murdering 49-year-old William "Bill" Scott Currier and 55-year-old Lorraine Simonne Currier of Essex, Vermont. Keyes broke into the Currier home on the night of June 8, 2011, and tied them up before driving them to an abandoned farmhouse where he shot Bill before sexually assaulting and strangling Lorraine. Their bodies have never been found. Two years prior, Keyes hid a "murder kit" near the Currier home, which he later recovered and used during the crime. After the murders, he moved most of the kit's contents to a new hiding place in Parishville, NY . . .

378 There was a rape and murder of a young girl on an air force base in 1954, a young airman, Jimmy Shaver was charged and convicted and eventually executed for the crime. There is a connection with Dr. Jolyn “Jolly” West, who was a spook hypnotist on the base who was treating him for depression.

Dr. West also examined Jack Ruby in his prison cell, declaring him insane, and Tim McVeigh. Strange guy, Dr. West. He is also infamous for killing an Elephant with an overdose of L.S.D.

Hypnosis is weird stuff, it is a myth that people will not do things under hypnosis they wouldn’t ordinarily do. About 20% of people are considered easily hypnotized. People who talk in their sleep a lot are said to be more suggestible.

After that he flew to Las Vegas, rented a car, and drove to Lufkin, TX to attended a family wedding. By the time he was driving across the country the cops were onto the ATM card use and figured out the the type of car being used. Somewhere along the way a plate reader picked that car. When he go to Lufkin the cops were more or less in BOLO mode which lead to him being stopped for traffic violation.

In the 80s, when LA was having the Crips/Bloods feuding over the drug trade, a series of murders happened that went unnoticed because of all the gang violence. I don't recall the details but they eventually arrested a local black guy, middle aged, non descript as the come. Just living in the middle of a gang turf war and randomly killing young women. Went on for years. I saw an episode of The Forensic Files about it.

It pee's me off that you can't get "corded" blinds (stupid people make everything difficult for smarter people!) anymore, so I had to rig up cord and pulleys myself! Good thing I rode my brakes, as another car coming from the left stopped right behind me (within about a foot of making impact.) So I pulled forward and looked to see what the fool in the other car was doing. The other car had Student Driver signs, and the idiot was pissed at me. He'd tried to scoot past me when I was backing up, and had to suddenly stop because another car ahead of him was also pulling out. Posted by: buddhaha at August 15, 2025 01:54 AM (pgBhY)

447
Terrestrial Time (TT) there may be unfamiliar. That's the modern version of ephemeris time. That is "uniform time" as best as can be measured/realized by modern atomic clocks. There's a 32 second plus some change difference between that and atomic time, TAI (time, atomic, international) for historical reasons. The old definition of ephemeris time was zeroed with what amounted to GMT on Jan 1, 1900. That 32s+ offset maintains continuity.

Think of UT1 as a count of Erf's synodic rotations with respect to the mean sun since 1900. Delta-t there is the difference. 69+ more seconds of uniform time have ticked than the number of rotations.

My Sandrail has turning brakes on it so the radius on that is twice the wheelbase. When it runs. You just pull one sides brake, turn and floor it. Makes a lot of noise on the street so it's best left to off road use.
Another good one was my 84 Honda Civic which is probably really close to a Miata.

457 Looks like I need to replace the motor mounts mounts on the 99 Suburban. Got the transmission and transfer case installed, but the transfer case is in contact with the transmission crossmember, and it looks like the entire assembly sits low on the driver's side. Should have sprung for new mounts while the engine was out; it would have been soooo easy. Changing them with the engine in place is doable, but will be a PITA. Auto Value in Calgary did not have them in stock! They are only about ten bucks each from Rock Auto, but then shipping, and shipping time enters into it.

465 Well that's all fine and good but how does this explain where all the unpaired socks go during a spin in the dryer?
