The giant ships with massive amounts of smoke pouring from their stacks would be difficult to conceal. So, Wilkinson proposed that the Navy utilize a different type of camouflage — one meant not to conceal but to confuse. Dazzle camouflage utilized zebra stripes, bold patterns, and vivid colors to make it difficult for German U-boats to determine the speed and course of battleships. Without knowing exactly which way the vessels were headed, the U-boats couldn't calculate where to launch their torpedoes.Pretty good photography at this link ![]() Why You’ll Love It Just 4 ingredients. Make this refreshing cocktail with vodka, orange juice, grenadine, and lime-flavored seltzer water. The lime slice and maraschino cherry garnish are optional, but highly encouraged. It looks just like a summer sunset. Skip the cocktail shaker. Pour the ingredients directly into the glass to create the gorgeous gradient. ----- Ingredients *** Not the drink of the night. But caption worthy. Nothing says classy like loudly ordering this at the bar. ![]() ![]() Dr. George Emery Goodfellow, who would come to be known as the “Gunfighter’s surgeon,” fully embodied what it meant to be a surgeon in the Wild Wild West. As was common for life in the frontier, improvisation was the theme of the day and, in that vein, Goodfellow challenged himself to perform previously unreported operative interventions in his efforts to save his patients. The Gunfighter’s surgeon also doubled as the coroner, using his gift for scientific inquiry in his post-mortem observations. His inquisitive nature also led him to reinvent a fundamental urologic procedure, the prostatectomy. No catalogue of the American Southwest would be complete without detailing his life and contributions.*** Notorious for its “shoot for the guts” approach to resolving disputes, the colorful activities of the Tombstone residents provided Goodfellow with ample opportunity to study the consequences of being one of the “festive or obstreperous citizens (who) delighted themselves with toys such as the 44 or 45-calibre Colt revolver and the 45-60 and 44-40 Winchester rifles and Carbines.” Gunfighter's Surgeon - Part 2 While he left the bravado of gunfights behind him, George Goodfellow brought the same pioneering spirit to defining himself and a surgical field that was in its infancy – urology - and centered his work on prostatic disease, which was in the lime-light of the surgical theater. Goodfellow’s most significant contribution to urology—the perineal prostatectomy—was reported to be performed by him upon his arrival in Tucson on October 13, 1891 (likely at St. Mary’s Hospital) almost 13 years prior to his formal publications claiming credit for performing a pure perineal prostatectomy, the first so far as known to me, deliberately devised and carried out. I don't think the Gunfighter's Surgeon could help this 'bro with his bromide problem. Hospital put a psych hold on him which likely saved his life. Genius takes the advice of AI for a salt substitute. He also shared that, after reading about the negative effects that sodium chloride, or table salt, has on one's health, he was surprised that he could only find literature related to reducing sodium from one's diet. Inspired by his history of studying nutrition in college, he decided to conduct a personal experiment to eliminate chloride from his diet. For 3 months, he had replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide obtained from the internet after consultation with ChatGPT, in which he had read that chloride can be swapped with bromide, though likely for other purposes, such as cleaning. ![]() ![]() [Disco says: This one hit my X feed today while working on the Club. I noted the apparently universal absence of any mention of the 80th anniversary of Hirohito's surrender address yesterday. Lots of interesting and weird stuff happened starting the day after (today), extending up to the September 2 signing ceremony on the USS Missouri (which, as noted historian Barack Obama noted, was attended by the emperor himself).
A lot of this stuff was written about in a book I think I lost in a move, The Last Great Victory. Maybe I should see if I actually brought that book with me. Also the Twitter WWII day by day accounts should have some it, should check. Posted by: rhomboid at August 16, 2025 10:15 PM (U/Byj) 32

Would imagine parts for a T-54 are around, given how many were made and how far/wide they were dispersed (Soviet allies and client states around the world). Around 100K produced (!!!!). Ammo? Dunno, but assume no problem, 100mm, presumably produced in galactic quantities to feed the enormous number built.

And Dazzle is a fascinating camo concept that was prevalent in WWII also. There's a website where they document all the different patterns. Due to black/white photography being the norm, a lot of WWII colors are not really widely recognized or known. Navy ships (at least the larger ones) were often a deep blue at the start. And of course naval aviation thought to remove the small red circle from the roundels used at the start (hmm, red circles on our planes, in the Pacific .... yeah, let's change that).

So, this is an interesting bit. I had been listening to a podcast with Sargon a few months ago and I remembered that he had said something about the Invasion of Benin. How the accounts from the British soldiers described the kingdom in frankly hellish terms. Human sacrifice, slave trade.
I thought of it after listening to another video of his so I went looking for some sort of corroboration for his mention there. Well, almost nothing. I suspect if you can find the actual accounts by the British soldiers it might be a different tale, but most of the pages online and the videos were of the mighty African kingdom of wonder that was crushed by the cowardly, greedy British (in 7 days.) I found this video which seems to be pushing back on the African Triumphalism, but who the heck knows. https://tinyurl.com/bdhye23s Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 16, 2025 10:48 PM (bss/y) 124

He thought, screw it! If I have to put up with this shit I just won't kill myself! Another was a small child on Okinawa who intended to not survive into captivity. The Hole In the Wall. At 207th St. in Manhattan, mid 80s. There is an alley with 3 entrances a few steps down from the street. A heavily armored protrusion sticking out. You knock on the metal, put in your $5 or $10, then out comes your little baggie of pot. Never saw the proprietor(s).
Then one day, there was only crack available. Around 3PM, kids in Catholic School uniforms would come by for a nickel bag, too. The coppers eventually raided and pried the hole thing out of the wall. —— My uncle was in the ETO and had a pretty rough time of it. But he had come to terms with it, I think, as a result of being a history schoolteacher. So he would talk about a few things or lay out “hypotheticals” that didn’t sound very fun. He mentioned the Germans were very, very good at camouflage. To add to that, he said they were issued very good ammunition, in that it was a true smokeless powder and thus extremely hard to locate where fire was coming from. But US ammunition was barely above black powder and made gobs and gobs of smoke. He didn’t like that. Said they used lots of horses. Probably because they had to, no fuel for trucks. He always said they had a very good NCO corps and that was what made them so effective, he had a lot of respect for that, (or maybe left unsaid he wasn’t too impressed with his NCO leadership) Posted by: Common Tater at August 16, 2025 11:05 PM (im9tq) 157

Anonosaurus the last kamikaze mission was led by Adm. Ugaki, a high-ranking guy who had once been Yamamoto's chief of staff - after Hirohito's radio address but before new orders had arrived. Led a flight from Kyushu that failed to score any hits, crashing/being shot down in the dark near Ie Jima, a small island off Okinawa. Guess he preferred this to seppuku.
Several (AFAIK unsung/unnamed) bilingual Japanese-American interpreters on Okinawa did heroics walking into caves/exposing themselves to hostile fire to convince soldiers and civilians to surrender. On Saipan a Japanese-speaking latino from LA, Guy Gabaldon, did similar. Posted by: rhomboid at August 16, 2025 11:53 PM (U/Byj) 190

Mines on Ukrainian beaches? Anti-personnel mines? Sounds odd. And anti-ship mines would be obvious plus not set off by humans swimming or walking.
My only Black Sea dips were from the Georgian coast, years ago, at a former Soviet resort way down by Turkey. Got in just to say I had, and to get some swimming in on a looong work trip, but walked very carefully in/out - not due to mines, but due to Soviet Idiocy and Gawd Knows What's in the Water Here. Apparently and fortunately the area had no heavy metal or other exotic pollution, so all's good. Posted by: rhomboid at August 16, 2025 11:58 PM (U/Byj) 194
The NFL could have “fuck off straight white men” painted in the end zone and all the sportsball addicts would still come back. Hiring gay cheerleaders is them giving the finger to Normies and laughing as you still give them money. It’s a game for them now. How much can we make them take before they finally break.

I remember going into a bar call The Rathskeller somewhere down near Philly years ago. On the outside it looked like a gentrified building almost immaculate, but then I saw the sign had an arrow pointing down an outside stairs. Went down, opened the door and was almost knocked over by a mixture of cheap stale beer, cheap perfume and oppressive heat. One step inside I discovered it was a strip bar where the average age of the stripper was somewhere approaching mid-40's. I thought of it after listening to another video of his so I went looking for some sort of corroboration for his mention there. Well, almost nothing. I suspect if you can find the actual accounts by the British soldiers it might be a different tale, but most of the pages online and the videos were of the mighty African kingdom of wonder that was crushed by the cowardly, greedy British (in 7 days.)
Wiki actually mentions the human sacrifices, which got me to read about a couple of the other scramble for Africa interventions. And I was amused reading the one on Tunisia where wiki notes the government and economy of the country were weak because previous treaties had left them unable to set tariffs higher then 3%. I spent several hours today replacing the old AM-FM cassette stereo in my '64 Studebaker Daytona convertible. Took it out, and installed one of those tiny Dual tuner heads, that I have used with great success in other cars. Had to use a zip wheel to enlarge the hole in the dash to accept the DIN sleeve. Saved the cutout; it could be tack-welded back in quite easily should some future owner wish to go back to a factory radio. The radio bezel would hide it all. Anyway, DIN sleeve in place, hooked up all the wires, turned it on with a thumb drive of music plugged into the USB port, and...total silence. Nary a peep. It was reading the USB stick; I could see track titles scrolling on the screen. But no audio at all. Only thing I can think of is that I saw a tiny spark from the "always on" 12 volt lead as a heat-shrunk splice brushed the DIN sleeve. That splice was upstream of the inline fuse, and the radio was not yet plugged into the harness plug. Maybe I blew a fuse on the car's tiny fuse panel? It was getting dark, so I put the car in the shop for the night. I can't see all 4 speakers being DOA. The stereo itself might be a dud. I do have another one.

God is cleaning his church and exposing sin. Ask for forgiveness and repent. Hidden sin will be exposed. Those who reject Him, those who celebrate and cheer when a Christian falls into the clutches of depravity, think. What do you think God will do to you? You who reject a Holy God and mock those who believe. Sin will be punished. All sin.
