Saturday Night Jokes and Other Funnies

Paddy and Mick flew to Canada on a hunting trip. They chartered a small plane to take them into the Rockies for week hunting moose.

They managed to bag six. As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said the plane could take only four moose.

The two lads objected strongly. "Last year we shot six. The pilot let us take them all and he had the same plane as yours."

Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded. The plane took off. However, while attempting to cross some mountain even on full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down.

Somehow, surrounded by the moose bodies, Paddy and Mick survived the crash.

After climbing out of the wreckage, Paddy asked Mick, "Any idea where we are?"

Mick replied, "I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year!"

Wilkinson knew the Royal Navy couldn't use traditional camouflage to their advantage. The giant ships with massive amounts of smoke pouring from their stacks would be difficult to conceal.
So, Wilkinson proposed that the Navy utilize a different type of camouflage — one meant not to conceal but to confuse. Dazzle camouflage utilized zebra stripes, bold patterns, and vivid colors to make it difficult for German U-boats to determine the speed and course of battleships. Without knowing exactly which way the vessels were headed, the U-boats couldn't calculate where to launch their torpedoes.

Summer Sunset Cocktail

Why You’ll Love It
Just 4 ingredients. Make this refreshing cocktail with vodka, orange juice, grenadine, and lime-flavored seltzer water. The lime slice and maraschino cherry garnish are optional, but highly encouraged.
It looks just like a summer sunset. Skip the cocktail shaker. Pour the ingredients directly into the glass to create the gorgeous gradient.

2 ounces orange juice
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce genadine
3 ounces cold lime-flavored seltzer water
Lime slice, for garnish (optional)
1 maraschino cherry with stem, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Fill a highball or Collins glass halfway with ice. Add 2 ounces orange juice and 1 ounce vodka, and stir to combine. Slowly pour 1/2 ounce grenadine into the center of the glass, letting it settle on the bottom. Do not stir. Top with 3 ounces cold lime-flavored seltzer water. Garnish with a lime slice and a maraschino cherry.

Goodfellow’s most significant contribution to urology—the perineal prostatectomy—was reported to be performed by him upon his arrival in Tucson on October 13, 1891 (likely at St. Mary’s Hospital) almost 13 years prior to his formal publications claiming credit for performing a pure perineal prostatectomy, the first so far as known to me, deliberately devised and carried out.

31 I noted the apparently universal absence of any mention of the 80th anniversary of Hirohito's surrender address yesterday. Lots of interesting and weird stuff happened starting the day after (today), extending up to the September 2 signing ceremony on the USS Missouri (which, as noted historian Barack Obama noted, was attended by the emperor himself).

A lot of this stuff was written about in a book I think I lost in a move, The Last Great Victory. Maybe I should see if I actually brought that book with me. Also the Twitter WWII day by day accounts should have some it, should check.

Couple of drinks and a sledge hammer should fix that. I remember going into a bar call The Rathskeller somewhere down near Philly years ago. On the outside it looked like a gentrified building almost immaculate, but then I saw the sign had an arrow pointing down an outside stairs. Went down, opened the door and was almost knocked over by a mixture of cheap stale beer, cheap perfume and oppressive heat. One step inside I discovered it was a strip bar where the average age of the stripper was somewhere approaching mid-40's.

123 So, this is an interesting bit. I had been listening to a podcast with Sargon a few months ago and I remembered that he had said something about the Invasion of Benin. How the accounts from the British soldiers described the kingdom in frankly hellish terms. Human sacrifice, slave trade.

I thought of it after listening to another video of his so I went looking for some sort of corroboration for his mention there. Well, almost nothing. His plane was malfunctioning and he didn't think he could make it to the target so he returned to base and requested another plane. His commander flipped shit accusing him of coward. He thought, screw it! If I have to put up with this shit I just won't kill myself! Another was a small child on Okinawa who intended to not survive into captivity. She, her family, and others hid in a cave. When the GIs demanded they come out, they responded with gunfire. The GIs responded with grenades. She was injured but survived.

My uncle was in the ETO and had a pretty rough time of it. But he had come to terms with it, I think, as a result of being a history schoolteacher. So he would talk about a few things or lay out “hypotheticals” that didn’t sound very fun.

He mentioned the Germans were very, very good at camouflage. To add to that, he said they were issued very good ammunition, in that it was a true smokeless powder and thus extremely hard to locate where fire was coming from. But US ammunition was barely above black powder and made gobs and gobs of smoke. He didn’t like that.

Said they used lots of horses. Probably because they had to, no fuel for trucks. He always said they had a very good NCO corps and that was what made them so effective, he had a lot of respect for that, (or maybe left unsaid he wasn’t too impressed with his NCO leadership)

Hard to tell. In the photo above, zoom in and you will see a small hole in the front. That is a fire-thru hole for the crew. Also harder to see is a ventilation bulge on the right front of the turret. The 55 didn't have these.

There is a Last Chance Saloon in the tiny hamlet of Wayne, Alberta, site of a long-closed coal mine. The road to Wayne wends it way up a steep coulee, and crosses the the little creek on seven bridges over the course of 2 or 3 miles. Bar is very popular with touring bikers. Only a few miles from the major town of Drumheller, in the Alberta Badlands.

My only Black Sea dips were from the Georgian coast, years ago, at a former Soviet resort way down by Turkey. I remember going into a bar call The Rathskeller somewhere down near Philly years ago. On the outside it looked like a gentrified building almost immaculate, but then I saw the sign had an arrow pointing down an outside stairs. Went down, opened the door and was almost knocked over by a mixture of cheap stale beer, cheap perfume and oppressive heat. One step inside I discovered it was a strip bar where the average age of the stripper was somewhere approaching mid-40's.

There was a "Good Grief" bar in Idaho, just a mile or two south of the Canadian border on the highway that links Bonner's Ferry with Cranbrook, B.C. I think it's now just a cafe and C-store. And Sumas, Washington has the "Holy Smoke, It's A Tavern" located in a deconsecrated church.

Wiki actually mentions the human sacrifices, which got me to read about a couple of the other scramble for Africa interventions. And I was amused reading the one on Tunisia where wiki notes the government and economy of the country were weak because previous treaties had left them unable to set tariffs higher then 3%.

Someone they were not an economic powerhouse even though they had much lower tariffs then their european rivals...

229 I spent several hours today replacing the old AM-FM cassette stereo in my '64 Studebaker Daytona convertible. Took it out, and installed one of those tiny Dual tuner heads, that I have used with great success in other cars. Had to use a zip wheel to enlarge the hole in the dash to accept the DIN sleeve. Saved the cutout; it could be tack-welded back in quite easily should some future owner wish to go back to a factory radio. The radio bezel would hide it all. Anyway, DIN sleeve in place, hooked up all the wires, turned it on with a thumb drive of music plugged into the USB port, and...total silence. Nary a peep. It was reading the USB stick; I could see track titles scrolling on the screen. But no audio at all. Only thing I can think of is that I saw a tiny spark from the "always on" 12 volt lead as a heat-shrunk splice brushed the DIN sleeve. That splice was upstream of the inline fuse, and the radio was not yet plugged into the harness plug. Maybe I blew a fuse on the car's tiny fuse panel? It was getting dark, so I put the car in the shop for the night. I can't see all 4 speakers being DOA. The stereo itself might be a dud. I do have another one.

254 My old laptop (HP, Win10) completely refused to 'see' my Cox Gateway. My other devices (another laptop (Linux), Roku stick, and mini-PC (Win11) are connected. So, I rebooted the Cox Gateway and the old, rickety laptop connected. I've been having that problem with that on this old laptop. Usually, a reboot or two solved it, but not this time. I'm planning on putting Linux Mint on this in Oct but may do it sooner if I keep having to tap dance to get this old machine to 'see' the Cox Gateway.
