So, listened to Whiskey Lullaby for the first time last night.
1) Ricky Schroeder 2) 'Put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger.' Is a great line. But the song is almost as bad as DOA for the over-the-top ness. 1) Not only is she cheating on him when she'd know he was going to be back any day now. She does it in their house and their bed. 2) of course she is sending him letters talking about starting a family. So, as a buddy said in college once 'She is all foul.' But then the song, after all that, expects us to feel sorry for this psychopath? Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at August 14, 2025 07:56 PM (zZu0s) 29

Fresh squeezed apple juice?
Yeah, I have a story: When I was a kid, made friends with the children of a neighbor family. One day, the mom saaid, "Want to to go up to an apple farm in Sebastopol and make fresh-squeezed apple juice?" "Yes!" squealed the children in delight. So we all piled in the car and drove up to Sebastopol (apple-and grape-growing town in Sonoma County, near Napa). Annnnnddd...it was a nudist commune populated entirely by naked hippies, which supported themselves selling fresh-squeezed apple juice from all the apple trees grwoing wild on thier property. Yeah. we made some apple juice with them, cranking the huge handle of the squeezing press in a circle, 8 people at a time. Hygiene? Never heard of it. Note: This is what growing up in the SF Bay Area used to be like. Naked communes -- nothing out of the ordinary. Posted by: zombie at August 14, 2025 08:10 PM (pMi6S) 73

Until Saruman pulled them together the tribes in the Dunlending were just horse raiders with no engineering skills and the orcs were totally unorganized raiding parties. Gondor might have been able to take them, but they were allies. The Normans when they took over England did very well with building a small hill and planting a stone tower on top with small cavalry forces to raid the surrounding area to establish rule. City-owned Missouri grocery store closes as Mamdani campaigns for some in New York "Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are no longer, at this time, able to serve the residents of this important community," the note read, according to KSHB in Kansas City. The city purchased the Linwood Shopping Center where Sun Fresh is in 2016 and opened the grocery store in 2018 in an effort to provide more options for residents in the area. Kansas City spent more than $17 million in taxpayer money acquiring and renovating the Sun Fresh market. Despite its efforts, Sun Fresh has been plagued with empty shelves and crime, leading employees to reportedly carry tasers. Last year, the Kansas City Council approved spending $750,000 in emergency city funding in an attempt to keep the store open. https://tinyurl.com/4nnyfhnr Posted by: rickb223 at August 14, 2025 08:43 PM (mF7io) 145

It's easy to realize what a relatively young country we are when I see photos like that covered wagon above. At that very time my grandfather was 10 years old and likely hunting musk rats with a shotgun somewhere in eastern Pennsylvania. To him, that was the equivalent of the internet. In other words, an obsession.

In 1908 my great grandfather Frank took off on his own at 13 to find his dad. From Michigan to Washingtons lumber fields, hopping trains and shining shoes.
He returned 3 years later and only said he found him. He never told the whole story to my knowlege and he had money. Bought a farm and raised 8 kids. 5 of which made it to adulthood. Posted by: Reforger at August 14, 2025 09:22 PM (pxUkb) 210

My friend's Mom told stories of riding in a horse and sleigh in winter with her doctor father going out to visit patients. My S-i-L's grandmother, born 1890 in Va Beach, read about the Wright Brothers in her local paper at 13. She lived to see man walk on the moon. Crazy how we just abandoned space exploration after tragedies. But we knew space exploration was dangerous, NASA just tried to represent it as everyday, like having the schoolteacher contest and all that, basically space tourists. Space travel is not and never will be 'everyday', at least not in our lifetimes. Posted by: RickZ at August 14, 2025 09:27 PM (gKDq2) Posted by: Don Black at August 14, 2025 09:30 PM (AOsQT) 216
Really moving photo up top. A hearty family in relatively untamed territory. Let's see, my father's father was twenty at that time. He and his father and uncle had just rolled down two years earlier from Kansas to Oklahoma to start a cement plant. Don't let that covered wagon confuse you. It was Modern Times.

Booty is next. I have said since 2022 it was Kamala next, then Booty.
*Actually I thought Kamala was next in 2019 and she was such an impossible disaster they decided to try to shoehorn her in as Biden's absolutely inexplicable VP. Then they tried to off Trump and get her in that way. That's why they exposed Biden in June. Expose Biden in June, off Trump in July, nominate Kamala for the good of the country in August. Would have worked too if it wasn't for that meddling PowerPoint chart. Posted by: ... at August 14, 2025 09:37 PM (E0p3T) 221
