Trump Announces DC Homeless Are Being Moved Out and DC Criminals Are Going to Jail
Will Federalize DC Police

"No More Mr. Nice Guy."

President Trump on Sunday vowed to "take our Capital back," pledging to move the homeless "far from the Capital" and jail criminals "very fast" with "no MR. NICE GUY."

Key Details:

Trump said the homeless will be provided housing "far from the Capital" while criminals "will be put in jail where you belong." He compared the planned crackdown to his border enforcement policies.

The president's comments come after 19-year-old Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer, was beaten by about 10 juveniles while trying to stop a carjacking last Sunday. Two suspects have been arrested, and a $10,000 reward is offered for information leading to the others.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city will cooperate with federal law enforcement but claimed there is "no crime spike."

Yes there is. As in many other post-George-Floyd blue cities, cops have been told to simply not make arrests.

Diving Deeper:

President Donald Trump on Sunday took aim at Washington, DC's crime and homelessness, vowing an aggressive federal push to "make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before." Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, "The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital." He added that criminals "don't have to move out. We're going to put you in jail where you belong. It's all going to happen very fast, just like the Border. This will be easier -- Be prepared! There will be no 'MR. NICE GUY.'"

...

Last Thursday, Trump announced a surge of federal law enforcement in DC to combat crime. Some Republicans have floated a federal takeover of the city, which operates under the 1973 Home Rule Act, giving Congress the authority to override local laws.

...

DC remains one of the most dangerous cities in the country, ranking fourth in homicide rates in 2023, according to USA Facts. "It is our capital city. It is more violent than Baghdad. It is more violent than parts of Ethiopia, than parts of many of the most dangerous places in the world," White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller told reporters last week.

Hello everybody. It's a wonderful day for a Monday.

Update: His announcement of the DC crackdown is below. He announced that he's using his powers to federalize the DC police and he's sending in the National Guard.

29 Trump's declaration towards the capitol city has some risk. There are those, working in the Capitol itself, that will do everything in their power to foment more violence and unrest. The National Guard will be tested. To the extreme. And should violence break out Trump will be blamed.

And we all know where that ends up.

But something had to be done. It's a mess.

30 You know, there is something to be said for Japan. You find few homeless on the streets. Why? Simple, Japan doesn't condone illegal drug use, and will lock you up for a long time. They, also, still recognize mental illness, and make an effort to treat it. If the individual is beyond self-sufficiency, they go to the sanitarium (hey, just like we used to do).

Still, Japanese watch weird cartoons and eat stuff I don't even want to touch.

71 We know how to put a major dent in urban violence. We did it in 1994. We (Republicans AND Dems) finally examined with clear eyes the misery wrought by out-of-control violence, correctly identified the 'superpredators' themselves as the 'root cause', and incarcerated hundreds of thousands of them. It worked quite well, until we returned to looking at the situation with eyes clouded by White Guilt, and forgot the level of severity needed to deal with it.

You are correct. Any homeless who can be saved is being saved. The amount of money and resources spent on homeless is insane. If you are homeless and want help to get off the streets, it is there. The problem is that 99% of homeless are so far mentally or addictively gone they are beyond help even if they wanted it (which they don't).

100 Haven't been there in many years. Impression was that the place was far better than the many many years I lived there (in town, not a suburb). Large no-go areas (that way since 196 got redeveloped/gentrified. Just checking the nature of businesses in certain locations on the web conveyed an impression of big changes.

Hard to believe it's anything like the Crack War period of the 80s. Even then, serious crime was very geographically defined and segregated. WaPo Metro section had a "murder map" once or twice a year - typically there'd be 2 or 3 killings west of Rock Creek Park, max. Hundreds east of the Hill/Anacostia.

Still recall two of the only murders in low-crime NW, one up at Tenley Circle (outdoor store) and the horrible double killing at the Starbucks across from Safeway on Wisconsin Ave. (lived very close to that).

The only distinction I'd made is between the accidental/temporary homeless and the professional homeless. There are temporary homeless due to domestic violence and/or a string of bad luck/hard times. For them, they truly just need a few breaks to get back on their feet and stable again.

Who you see at tent cities at Washington DC Union Station, Berkeley CA, and a lot of West Coast cities are the professionally homeless. They are drugged out, have no interest in getting clean, and constantly engage in various "minor" crimes to support their habits. They are responsible for the degradation of life in big cities, and they are, for the most part, impossible to rehabilitate.

168 Trump is solidifying power. This is another step toward dictatorship. A gangster taking over a city, and the first thing he wants to do is get rid of the homeless. He'll want to do the same to Chicago, and many other cities. And eventually, the crown jewel - NYC.

Back when the Chinese leader Xi came to San Francisco, a mighty effort was made to clean the homeless from the streets. Faux-Snooze watching acquaintances commented, "If they can clean up San Francisco for a commie leader, why can't they keep it cleaned up all the time?"

No doubt, Trump has seen this "reasoning".

After tomorrow no one will ever mention the Epstein files again. No one will opine about the evil of rich guys sexually abusing young girls on an island because the rapist and convicted felon has decided to occupy a majority black city. Thanks Mitch mcconnel, thanks John roberts.

It's no mystery why there are so many homeless. Housing, food, and healthcare. There isn't enough of that available to go around, first to the homeless, then to the poor, and on up the ladder. Cleaning up a city fixes nothing, and probably will make it worse for the homeless.

There are nice residential sections of Baltimore. I have family friends that live there. The problem is that the city is small so that the common areas -- shopping centers, etc -- are infested with degenerate criminals no matter where you go. That's not true in cities like NYC, where the affluent areas are "enclosed" and self-sufficient, so you never have to associate with the riff-raff.

324 This is a stupid idea. Federalizing anything, outside of an existential war, is a terrible idea. Trump, of course, gives inconsistency a bad name. DC has crime because DC will do nothing to stop it. DC doesn't arrest, doesn't punish, just laughs it off. So, yeah. Let's spend millions of dollars doing a job that ought to be done by authorities in DC. Who the hell gives a damn if DC turns into a new Baltimore? Come on, let it play out.

Note to Donald: stop spending money!

327 Baltimore. In the early 70s stationed in DC, we (a few guys in the outfit in DC) were invited up to B More by one of the guys that had married into a local family. First of all, we got lost. Then a B More cop on a Servicar (three wheeled motorcycle) led us in the right direction. We wound up finding our destination, out on Pulaski. Row houses with the traditional stoop that must be scrubbed, corner bars on all four corners. What a change from the hell hole Baltimore has become.

I am perfectly willing to allow for capital punishment for an increased number of crimes, but simply being too drug added or mentally unwell to take care of oneself properly is not among them. Also, no punishment without a trial, (an actual trial, not a kangaroo court hearing riddled with prosecutorial misconduct and judicial malfeasance like Trump had been receiving during the previous administrstion.)

There are plenty of dying-on-the-vine small towns all over the USA; ghost towns in all but name. Give a generous buy-out to the few remaining legit residents, then surround those towns with razor-wire fences, and fill them up with the homeless bums. Provide some policing; provide some building materials, and some food. Let them organize themselves, and create employment. Or not.
