As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? First, power is back on after 36 hours. We didn't open the fridge so all we had to toss were some leftovers and dairy products.
Second, just a week ago I wrote: I kind of wanted an M18 and would still get one if it came up at a really good price. Then it would go into the safe unloaded with the expectation that eventually Sig would have a verified fix or offer a full value trade-in on a follow-up model. So... It's not an M18, it's a full sized P320 in .45 but it was on the used rack tagged at $350. By applying for a store credit card I got a $75 voucher. With tax, I'm out the door for $300 +/- the cost of a happy meal. 1/2... Posted by: Oddbob at August 10, 2025 07:02 PM (3nLb4) 11

First impressions: It is a pretty light trigger pull for a duty weapon. We gun geeks like that but it may be less than ideal for a weapon meant to be used in high stress environments. This example doesn't have the amount of play in the slide that a lot of the ones in Ewetoob vids have that seems to be correlated to the ability to make it trip with less than a full trigger pull. I was not able to replicate the failure by wiggling the slide while holding the trigger at the take-up point. Of course I didn't jack it around super hard or hit it with a hammer because I'm not making a video or trying to prove anything one way or the other. That said, I'm still not going to trust it fully until there is some kind of resolution. Posted by: Oddbob at August 10, 2025 07:03 PM (3nLb4) 14

In other news: remember Daniel Perry, the guy who got caught up in a BLM protest in Austin and shot and killed a protester in self-defense? He was pardoned by the Governor after getting a recommendation from the Board of Pardons and Paroles…
Well, the Communist twink DA in Travis County is still harassing him and prosecuting him for “deadly conduct”, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a tear in jail. Perry’s defense attorney filed for a charge of venue, arguing the case was too well known in the Travis County SSR. The judge refused, saying the case is well known nationwide, so change of venue doesn’t matter. Posted by: Cow Demon at August 10, 2025 07:13 PM (vm8sq) 31
Attorney Kirk has not read the FBI BRF report on the MSP pistol and incident. The MSP P.320 had 1) evidence of serious damage which must have occurred prior to the incident and 2) abrasion tool marks which suggest the incident was deliberately fabricated; a hoax.
The FBI Ballistic Research Facilities report on the Michigan State Police P320 shows an “abrasion” inside the trigger guard in its Figure 13. Quoting from page 14: “It was reported by MSP that the motor officer’s weapon impacted the ground during the transition program. However it is unknown if this caused the abrasion.” An FBI BRF technician used keys to discharge a P.320 (this pistol?) in the Alien Gear holster. See Page 20 of the report. They describe discharging the weapon in the holster, using keys, which created an abrasion entirely similar to the abrasion in the incident pistol noted on Figure 13. The FBI BRF were not going to rat out the MSP officer responsible for this hoax, but they came close. The Michigan State Police announced on July 16th that they have fully adopted the SIG Sauer P.320/M18 pistol. Posted by: 10x25mm at August 10, 2025 07:14 PM (XzYdr) 32

A couple of Brits came to America and got invited aboard a boat by a perfect stranger, who took them out in the lake to see alligators, carried them over to a swimming spot, and - here's the most important part - let them shoot a gun for the first time. They had a blast. Maybe if we could bring a few thousand Brits over, provide them with the same experience, and then send them back, they could form the nucleus of a genuine rebellion against the UK's criminally woke government.

Stopped by my local silencer manufacturer to pick up some accessories last week. (America, f#ck yeah!)
I asked how business was, prior to the $200 transfer tax dropping to zero on 1 Jan. I was told the plant (I think they have a dozen guys working there) is running 40 hours a week as they ship inventory to dealers as fast as they can make it. They predict a rush of lay-away purchases in November, with ATF getting overwhelmed with applications in January. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 10, 2025 07:18 PM (bKn1x) 37

Range time this weekend consisted of taking my Colt Anaconda in.45 Long Colt (1995 production according to the serial number lookup on the Colt website) out to the range for zeroing. I had to cut the session short because I forgot to bring the right sized screwdriver so I could adjust the sights. The blade was a little too big for the sight screws.

Thanks for including that Brownells video on bore brushes. I never use steel brushes. A number of my guns are over a century old and others are rapidly approaching that mark. Bronze or nylon only. Better to use a good solvent and let it sit and do its job so the brush only has to push out the loosened fouling. If the ammo is old enough to use corrosive primers, some old surplus stuff for Mosin-Nagant rifles might qualify, I run a patch with plain water to neutralize the stuff first, followed by the usual cleaning routine.

Pleeeeze? I went to the local indoor 25 yard range to sight in my H&R M12 and try out some new ammo. I shot my best ever 5 shot group (with Wolfe Match Extra, if anyone cares). It's literally one, very slightly oval, hole. Barely distinguishable from the one shot group on the same paper. My take-away is that really concentrating on the sight picture, hold, and trigger pull is hard work and doing it 5 times in a row is non-trivial. Range report:
I had cooked up a good 120 g 6.5 CM load, so I went to the range on Wednesday to see how it did at long range. As I drove there, my mind drifted back to last week, wherein I, as Secretary of the club, took the Minutes: “Long Range closed on Wednesday through Friday for brush removal and target maintenance.” I got there to see the sign, so I went over to the 300 to join 3 other guys who had not read the calendar. I did shoot 5 rounds at the Dueling Tree paddles at 300, and they all went “clang”, so the trip was not wasted. Heck, no range trip is wasted. So long as you employ those reading fundamentals. After mucking about with the initial paperwork for a while, I got my silencer applications electronically submitted for ATF approval. It took two days for my approved applications to be sent to me via email.
Note that ATF probably only has a trickle of requests coming in right now, as many people are undoubtedly waiting for 1 Jan, when the price of a tax stamp drops to zero. Me, I'm expecting the shop shelves to be emptied of silencers and ATF to get backed up for months. Remember the craze for Smith and Wesson .44 Magnums after Dirty Harry came out, and the Model 29 shortage that lasted for years? That's what I expect. I now have two silencers in hand. And I discover they are costing me a fair amount of money which I hadn't planned on. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 10, 2025 07:46 PM (bKn1x) 66

75 "Tow" is a fiber of the flax plant stem. It is the weight of cotton, but has longer, stiffer fibers, and can be reused.
In the early days of muzzleloading guns, "tow" was wrapped around the ramrod's jag and used for cleaning the bore. Posted by: Duncanthrax ====== Thanks to Duncanthrax and JTB. Learned something. Posted by: Oddbob at August 10, 2025 07:54 PM (3nLb4) Well that's good of you to have asked. I appreciate that. I honestly think it was two problems acting as one problem. And Problem #1 was I wasn't used to a 1911. You don't baby this gun. You don't treat it "gentle", as far as racking as such. Problem #2, I think, was just break in. Related to Problem #1. But this Ruger 1911, I swear, is a gateway drug. I just really, really like it. And now I got folks around me talking about Ed Brown and Les Baer and Dan Wesson (my dad had a .357 back in the day from him). I'm a big, big fan of my first 1911. I haven't shot a round in almost six months and I am going to be out about another four-six months. Started the cataract surgery process but before that I have to go through another eye surgery thingy. I was informed by the cataract eye doctor that I have Map-dot-fingerprint corneal dystrophy. I have never heard of that before but it basically means I have smudges on my cornea that need to be taken care of before cataract surgery can happen.
Probably going to be six months or more before I can get back to the gun range. The good news is I will not have to wear eyeglasses for distance vision after everything is done. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at August 10, 2025 08:02 PM (0N4FZ) 87

70 ... Tow is the waste left over from processing flax which makes linen cloth. The fibers are rather stiff and can scrub fouling in a barrel. It is cheap and was once more common than cotton and its wastes. Cloth in those days was expensive. A piece would be moistened, usually with water, wrapped around a slotted stick or a ramrod jag and used to wipe out the barrel. A little goes a long way. It is very light and can be dried and reused. Perfect to keep in a shooting pouch.
BTW, tow is a light yellow color. That's why blondes are sometimes called towheads. Posted by: JTB at August 10, 2025 08:10 PM (yTvNw) 104

FWIW, Steel bore brushes (especially the closed loop Hoppes tornado line) can be used sparingly in older military surplus barrels that don't have gilt edged accuracy anyway. Grit, using jointed cleaning rods, and improper cleaning techniques (like not using boreguides, doing back and forth motions instead of one pass on a dirty bore before cleaning rod and brush, and so on. ) are more likely to cause damage to older used barrels than steel over brass/copper.
Rifle Boresnakes are for quick cleaning at the range and I prefer the Otis make as they have a steel cable in theirs so the cord cannot break leaving the cleaning bristles inside your bore. Posted by: whig at August 10, 2025 08:11 PM (ctrM5) 106

Spudboy, you may say, what are these additional costs for using a silencer?
1. A set of bore alignment rods. These are very straight rods of the appropriate caliber that you slip through the suppressor and into the bore. If the rod binds, it means the silencer is on crooked and very bad things will happen if you shoot a bullet through it. 2. A big pistol case that will hold my .22 pistol with the properly aligned silencer screwed onto it. 3. Subsonic .22 ammo. Standard velocity ammo still makes a noticeable "whoosh" noise. Subsonic ammo brings the noise to cap pistol level. 4. Muzzle devices. These are adapters that screw onto your centerfire rifle barrel, then the silencer screws onto them. they are semi-permanently installed, so you need one for each rifle you are going to suppress. A Marine told me a story of a patrol in Vietnam. SOP was if you needed to go to the bathroom, you took 2 men with you to stand security. Once, one of the new guys went out by himself. He hadn't returned when the order came to move out, so they went looking for him. Found his rifle, and some disturbed grass leading away. The platoon followed the track for 5 or so klicks, and found the new guy, dead, but looking very peaceful, although his uniform was very dirty, torn, and generally not STRAC.
One side of his head had two holes about 1/2" in diameter 6 or 7 inches apart, and the other side had the same two holes a little closer together. A tiger had gotten his head and dragged him. I took the moral of the story as don't go where here be tigers, and if you do, bring lots of friends, who are well-armed, and very well-practiced in the fundamentals. While in search of subsonic .22 ammo, in a small town, on a Sunday, I joked with the clerk at the firearms counter that they would soon need to pay people to take Sig P320s.
I was told, in no uncertain terms, that there is nothing wrong with them, they were still being adopted by police agencies, and all the news coverage was lies and exaggerations. I suspect he has a bunch of them sitting in the back storeroom. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 10, 2025 08:50 PM (bKn1x) 140
I own a couple of P320s neither of which have shot anyone or ever without the trigger being pulled. (Forgive any typos my laptop is hors de combat and gunthread is the only thing I really used it for much lately so not yet replaced).
I think the P320/M18 is not "inherently dangerous" as some people even some I like and respect are saying. I suspect that within the tolerances of manufacturing and wear that sometimes one - and there are LOTS of them - has an incident. I think social media has amplified those few incidents and Sigs response that what we could see on video (drop test not screw in trigger) was not happening was bad because no one likes to be gaslighted. I guarantee there have been way more incidents of wounding and death accidentally by military and police with 1911s than P320s and no one is saying I'd never carry a 1911. Well probably some are but not in that context. Sometimes things don't work as designed. I've seen a 1911 go full auto at a range and that was not how it was designed. Weather chased me inside, but not before I got nearly all the dead wood into the burn barrel. Yard looking much better now. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Hello, fine sir. I was chased in due to the intense sunshine and debilitating heat on the beach. I lasted 2 1/2 hours in my chair listening to the baseball game. I returned home a limp dishrag. Must have been 80 degrees out there. Posted by: nurse ratched at August 10, 2025 08:57 PM (mT+6a) 149
Well, the Communist twink DA in Travis County is still harassing him and prosecuting him for “deadly conduct”, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a tear in jail.
Perry’s defense attorney filed for a charge of venue, arguing the case was too well known in the Travis County SSR. The judge refused, saying the case is well known nationwide, so change of venue doesn’t matter. Posted by: Cow Demon at August 10, 2025 07:13 PM (vm8sq) If more pardons are forthcoming, I can see a solution open to Perry. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 10, 2025 08:58 PM (1SApS) 150
Also re the AF incident. The command the airman was in suspended use of the pistol after the incident. Some people think that means "see the AF knows the gun is unsafe." Maybe, maybe not. The military is astonishingly risk averse in peacetime. I've seen use of Humvees on post restricted after a Humvee accident. Didn't mean the vehicle was unsafe.
Also we don't know what happened. People say he laid his gun belt on a table and the pistol fired and killed him. Again maybe, maybe not. The base is a missile base in Wyoming and he was an SP and SPs on missile bases have fairly high incidence of suicide. I had a friend who was senior NCO of missileer SPs and he told me that a long time ago. All alone in the middle of nowhere walking a post or sitting in a small listening post. This is not to cast aspersions on the airman. But if it was a suicide the AF would not come right out and announce that for a number of reasons. Just saying we don't know what happened and neither do the Guntubers saying "this changes everything." Posted by: blaster at August 10, 2025 09:01 PM (RoO7G) 151
"Towhead" is also the name of a small island on a river that has trees growing on it, the upstream point gathers wood and pretty much everything else floating downstream, so it tends to get sort of "shaggy"

On the happier side: at dinner last night 24 yo son (who is btw working at an actual job and not just living in our basement playing video games anymore Hallelujah!) says he wants to purchase a handgun. Specifically a Glock. But you know, a gun.
Well son, you've come to the right place to ask. Your mama (sra blaster) doesn't like Glocks and can't shoot them. But what are you thinking of. A G17 he says. Well do you want to carry or a nightstand gun? Carry. Well you probably want a G19. Hang on. (Sigh. Video game experience) Well we don't have any actual Glocks but I do have one that I umm, printed and a PSA Dagger kitted to be a steel shoot competition gun. Here's an Sig P365 XL for comparison. I explained to him the value prop of a PSA Dagger and as someone who has recently started working it sounded like something more palatable than a "real" Glock. Quick range report, before thread dies:
Last week, did Church Gun drills - draw+fire. The PSA MicroDagger remains very accurate. It's a bit snappy with 147 gr but...not terrible. This week was mostly .22 drills with my CZ P-07. Good groupings. Also did some 147 grain drills with the CZ. The DA/SA trigger is still inferior to a striker fired mechanism but I'm familiar enough with the CZ to get good hits, but a bit slower than I'd have gotten with a striker. Good gun though, overall. The post of governor of Texas lost a lot of the usual power of a governor because Sam Houston was governor when Texas seceded and he, Sam Houston, opposed it. They forced him out of office over it and curtailed a lot of the power of the governorship while they were at it. Houston died in 1863 before the end of the war.

At church service today our pastor said they were looking for people to support various positions in the ministry as they are expanding the number of services. Among the things he said was "we need people for the security team, you know the guys who are packing. I know some of you are packing right now."
I was surprised by this. Our pastor does not bring up politics often but my perception is that he is liberal and I suspect that our Northern Virginia congregation is mostly liberal. But he also said later in the service that he wanted more of the congregation to move from consumer to service and that if you heard a calling today you should volunteer. I think I heard my calling. Someone mentioned having 1911 fever. Beware of its expensive variant, Turkish 1911 Clone Disease. Symptoms include:
1. Prowling the Internet sites of distributors, looking for "good deals" at all hours of the day and night. 2. Buying multiple copies of a model, when they are "fantastic deals." 3. Discovering your FFL transfer dealer has your number on speed dial. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 10, 2025 09:42 PM (bKn1x) 183
And to weigh in on the SIG P320....I have a civilian version with a Romeo One red dot mounted. I called it my Robocop gun as it's a big boy and looked pretty high tech when I bought it.
I don't like it. But, being fair, I've put near 2k rounds through it with ZERO malfunctions. That's impressive. It groups consistently and precisely. Sometimes even where I wanted it to group. I don't like the trigger, I don't like the lack of trigger safety, I don't consider it drop safe and I don't carry it. But it does some things well. I doubt I'll ever be able to sell it or give it to a relative in good conscience. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at August 10, 2025 09:45 PM (xcxpd) 184

I would note that the 1876 constitution was the first post-Reconstruction constitution for Texas, so it was the first to put in place in the Union ideas engendered by Houston’s defiance while in office. What did they do during the confederacy? As far as I know they didn’t let Sam Houston do anything. YMMV.
