Sheep Creek Overlook.jpg

Sheep Creek Overlook

Eleven miles south of Manila, Utah on UT Hwy 44 is the Sheep Creek Bay Interpretive Overlook. This paved pullout sits nearly 500 feet above the surface of the reservoir and rewards visitors with sweeping views of Sheep Creek Bay, a great launching point for water activities. During his historic Green River and Colorado River expedition in 1869, John Wesley Powell and crew named the area after witnessing the sun reflecting off the brilliant red hues of the sandstone cliffs towering above the Green River. Today visitors can witness the same spectacle by making a stop to the overlook during sunrise or sunset year-round.

Bake the cake. Martha's Vineyard, of course. Pose, gossip, sip, repeat - and that's just the dog groomer.

Alan Dershowitz, the renowned legal scholar and longtime defender of civil liberties, recently found himself at the center of a bizarre confrontation at the West Tisbury Farmers Market on Martha’s Vineyard. What started as an attempt to purchase some pierogis escalated into a public dispute that lays bare the growing intolerance among certain progressive circles.

Dershowitz, who has faced backlash for his past representation of high-profile clients Jeffrey Epstein and his vocal support for Israel, was refused service by vendor Krem Miskevich of Good Pierogi. The incident, now dubbed “Pierogi-gate,” has sparked debates about discrimination, free speech, and the left’s selective application of principles like inclusivity.

I could care less about the "Generation Flame Wars." Gen Z gets a downward head nod for this one. Older(ish) article.

Gen Z pounding the Guiness beer

At first glance, a 265-year-old beer brand may seem like an odd fit for Gen Z consumers, many of whom are more accustomed to CBD gummies and adaptogenic drinks than they are to a frothy stout. The trend calls to mind Pabst Blue Ribbon’s resurgence in the late 2010s. Unlike Pabst, however, which made a comeback thanks to hipsters, Guinness’ popularity rests squarely on the shoulders of social media influencers. Or, as many have taken to calling them, Guinnfluencers.

For dads of daughters and those that may be a son-in-law. Any that have already navigated - weigh in. For those that have not, read the information at the link and the comments carefully.

Questions for future son-in-law. (This is your cue, Horde)

- Do you have more shoes than my daughter? If so, that's a red flag.
- Can you parallel park?
- Do you know how to change a tire?
- Do you own more than one firearm?
- Do you know that when my daughter says, "Nothing is wrong," it's a trap?
- Longbow or crossbow?
- As the article below mentions, "Are you a communist?"

Wise words from AoSHQ regular commenter, Admiral Ackbar (of highly questionable links) speaks the truth.

Admr 8-12.jpg

Asking a dad for his daughter's hand in marriage.

A refreshingly, old-school overture that is deeply appreciated. I am a big fan of having my expectations managed—particularly with regards to my daughter and her happiness with the opposite sex.

Mrs. Shepherd asked why the prospective son-in-law—code named “Too Tall”—didn’t just call me or schedule a more personal Zoom? “No, Mom,” my daughter said, “he wants to ask Dad in person.” I nodded, thinking well-played future son-in-law, you will be seeing me soon.

blood falls.jpg

Nature is pretty cool high clover neato.Blood Falls, Antarctica.

According to Forbes, Blood Waterfall was discovered over 110 years ago by geoscientist Griffith Taylor. Mr Taylor gave his name both to the glacier where he found the spewing red water and to Taylor Valley, into which the glacier flows.

Initially, researchers believed that the colour of the waterfall could be because of red algae content in the water. However, new research recently explained that the waterfall is rich in iron, which reacts with oxygen in the air when the water emerges from the glacier, staining it a bloody crimson colour.

Another thing that left scientists baffled was the temperature in the area, which is almost minus 19 degrees Celcius. So, the fact that the water was running and not frozen solid was surprising.

Always time for a sniper reference. Or two.

I have a lot of questions about this. However, any reading about snipers is worth a look. Human Freeze Response and snipers. H/T to RCP - Real Clear Science.

She offers two very different examples of people who are able to control the freeze response to their advantage.

One is living statues, those street performers you see in tourist hotspots who are able to stay almost unnaturally still. The other? Snipers.

Military marksmen also stay incredibly still, while simultaneously making critical decisions about accuracy and when to take a shot in a life-or-death situation.

It’s something Roelofs has replicated in the lab and her work has also been integrated into training for the Dutch police.

She created a virtual reality shooting game where players “have to make decisions on a threat and we force them to keep their heart rate in a certain area.”

Roelofs says: “We found that the stronger the magnitude of the freezing [based on measurements of players’ heart rates], the better they were at the game and the faster they were in their decisions.”

83 The colorful canyon named by Maj. Powell is Flaming Gorge, which makes more sense of the description. The Flaming Gorge dam and reservoir are on the Green River in Wyoming and Utah. Beautiful country and great fishing. Most memorable to me was my younger brother pitching a fit, stomping out of camp, and dramatically sitting on a prickly pear cactus, which he was too preoccupied to notice. We were pulling spines from his tuchus for hours!

1) steroids for the inflammation this time, or something like allopurinol for long-term control? Or both? Hopefully both. If you can have some prednisone or something on-hand, it helps. Gout comes on fast; by the time you get to the clinic and get your prescription, it's over.

B) I've got it. No episodes since before the Covidiocy. Allopurinol works, at least for me.

iii) It's only "early-onset gout" if it hits you in your 20s. Everyone thinks of it as a grandma/grandpa disease, but it often starts in your 40s, or even 30s. Like mine did. It's the progressive damage from a lifetime of episodes that give it the "disease of the elderly" stigma. Try not to have too many flare-ups.

213 Hi Morons and 'ettes!

I am LOVING that the Idaho Inmate is being driven more insane locked up, after murdering four sleeping college students. And whining! Hahahaha

The Moron in me whats to know what they are shouting to him in the prison vents. Am I wrong to wonder this? Is it the sleep deprivation I've had all day that I am quietly cheering other murder inmates? He apparently gets upset if he thinks anyone is mean to his mommy. Maybe that is some of the comments in the vents of his solitary life. His one hour is not outside but in a chain length cage. Possibly other inmates in other cages mess with him then, too. I really despise this bug eyed cretin (no offense to normal bug eyed cretins).

Regarding the theme of the ONT. My husband did not think, I don't guess, to call my father and ask for permission to marry his only daughter.

Because they did not even meet until a few days before we married, due to thousands of miles between us.,

When they did meet my father did not grill him. He told him he hoped he knew what he was getting into, and probably the short end of the deal. There was laughter and bonding within hours to mock me. I am surprised a dowry was not offered.

Also, weird as it may sound, keep your feet warm at night. The pain of gout is caused by urate crystals in the joint, which act like sand in gears. Urate crystals form when uric acid in your blood comes out of solution, and that's more likely to happen if your feet get cold. Good luck, a gout attack is miserable, as you have discovered.

236 This is how censorship works. Head of global communications for the United Nations, Melissa Fleming, boasts about a 2021 deal with Google to block access to all alternate climate or global warming images or studies. Google is the world's biggest online search engine.

Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 12, 2025 10:52 PM (wHp1L)

In theory, their search monopoly should be trivial to break. 20 years ago their marketshare made sense because their competitors were generally awful. Now there are plenty of options that pretty much have parity with them. Especially now that more and more people are starting to rely on LLMs rather than scrolling thought results pages.

All that's really keeping google on top is laziness and/or extreme tech illiteracy from users that don't know how to, or that you even can, change search engines. Which, in practice, are extremely powerful barriers.

292 Google is trying the back door on censorship still. You will notice that they changed the format. Now, when you search a topic, an AI generated text is the first entry. It pretends to be objective and comprehensive. They get to control what sources are used in determination of the answered topic for which you are inquiring. Which means responses are bias.

They know most people that search something are doing so for a quick response. So, they are depending on the laziness of the searcher to accept their "served right up on a dinner plate" answer.

It's nothing more than clever censorship of those sources that might provide alternative views with references and facts.

Or, at least, that's my opinion of Google's latest unveiling.

Let the "good" muslims become resident aliens. They can live out their lives, and own property, and thrive, but cannot have any role in governance. No vote, not allowed to hold or run for public office. If they find that restriction too onerous, let them make a choice: renounce islam, and make a true conversion to a faith compatible with Western values. Backsliders will be deported or shot, as needs must. Or self deport to one of the 57 islamic shitholes already in existence.

Most places over there are fairly chill, the UAE is Disneyland for the wealthy. Yeah, they bored in and launched at about 20 miles. The Exocet has a 75 mile range, so there was a lot of fuel still in the missile.

Interestingly, at another Mensa meeting, I had a chat with a fellow who did a lot of contractor work for the Navy. His opinion, after seeing photos of the Sheffield after the strike, was that the wireways onboard got burned out and crippled the firefighting systems, contributing to the sinking.

As I and another parishioner were discussing the issue, he said he would have to move away from us because our discussion was making it hard for him to frame an inquiry to Google. He had his microphone on, and it was listening to our discussion and apparently trying to refute it! If the discussion today about how the UN controls what information Google will tell you about climate change didn’t put you right off it, I can’t help you! I sometimes use Yandex, the Russian search engine for matters non-Slavic, or for matters where they can rightfully boast, like Diana Ankudinova. Be aware, look for alternatives. By the way Yandex will try to glean the last bit of info about you. It’s shameless that way. I use a VPN when I use it, for one layer of protection.

392 The Bohr atom model was really only good for atoms with just one electron: so hydrogen. You could make it work for singly ionized helium, and so forth. It was worked out in the 1910s, so it was even before early quantum wave theory. A lot of features in the model didn’t have any justification at the time: they just worked! And working with the Bohr model led to a lot of ideas in early quantum theory.

402 What I can’t even comprehend is they were delving into the smallest particles, that can’t be seen, and postulating what different things and properties must be caused by something else. Neutrons and Protons and the rest of it.

They didn’t really look at it in terms of bombs, at first. Fast fission was thought to be a way to power navy ships or submarines (which eventually did happen of course)

What was weird, there were several tons of high grade (65%) uranium ore stored on Staten Island, from the Belgian Congo. Why was that there? Satisfy futures contracts maybe? They secured it right away.

406 There are rules to the Bohr atom model, so it was not completely ad hoc. But we were just lucky that a semi-classical model like that worked so perfectly. Thus classical ideas bridged the gap between classical and quantum theory. If we had to wait for the development of quantum theory before we could even model a hydrogen atom, it would have taken much longer to develop quantum theory!

420 @ Puddleglum, my hubs suffers from gout and it took us a long time to figure out the trigger foods. Every book we read was completely wrong. They assured us that red meat, animal fats and beer were all forbidden. Hubs gave them up and still suffered from attacks. After a bit of trial and error we found the culprits: sugar, HFCS, and turkey. Eliminated those and started taking a uric acid supplement daily with good results. Went back to red meat and animal fats with no issues. With beer, the mass produced brands can have HFCS so stick with local craft brews instead if that's your poison. Other alcohol no problem, just watch the sugar.

Now he rarely needs the meds. But it will be tough to weed through what you eat and test for a reaction. There are good uric acid gout supplements available on Amazon. You may need to go through a couple until you hit on the one that works best for you. But it will be a game changer.

444 Capt. Obvious, negative - from America's Finest City, back when that slogan was coined.

Nobody seems to remember the origin of that slogan. It's the opposite of boastful.

The 1972 GOP convention was slated for San Diego. That was a pretty big deal for the city of that time. Nixon called San Diego his "lucky city" (not sure where that came from). Anyway. 1972. The s**t-stirrers of the time made big threats to disrupt the GOP convention (of course). Hoping to avoid their own 1968 Chicago Dem debacle, the RNC decided to move the convention to Miami Beach - easy to control and prevent major unpleasantness, thanks to geography.

Major butt-hurt among the Chamber of Commerce types (understandable). Indifference and amusement among the masses (San Diego definitely a GOP-voting area at that time, BTW). A sort of tongue-in-cheek "civic pride" stunt was the solution - "America's Finest City". No idea about that, then or now, but can report that back then, a spectacular place to grow up.

Google is trying the back door on censorship still.

Peter Clack@PeterDClack . 4h

This is how censorship works. Head of global communications for the United Nations, Melissa Fleming, boasts about a 2021 deal with Google to block access to all alternate climate or global warming images or studies. Google is the world's biggest online search engine.

How many times do I have to say that those research groups that got into the climate modeling scam at the outset were set for life? Their "work product" became one among many in the grand canonical assembly of climate change models and, as such, transcended nearly all others to become Holy Writ. Their work cannot be defunded because "it's holy writ"!

Pleiades rise time here is a little after midnight, now. The ancient Greek homos were big on the Pleiades, and the heliacal rising was the signal for safe sailing, and also the start of the farming season.

This was similar to how the ancient Egyptians used the heliacal rising of the Alpha Big Dog, Sirius, as a go-signal.

The "Dog days of Summer" comes from this heliacal rising. Indeed, August 11th is about that rise date for the most of us in the Northern hemisphere. It varies with latitude, of course, but that's a good rough date.

You obviously want more precision than this Sky & Telescope article offers, but they suggest the heliacal rising of Sirius as seen from Memphis, Egypt has shifted from early July to present day early August. There is an illustration in the article showing the position of Sirius at 3° high 32 minutes before sunrise around the time of its heliacal rising on 15 July 3000 BC, as seen from Memphis. See the article for more details. The calculation was done using Stellarium.

534 Grok's output looks reasonable. Precession has shifted the heliacal rising of Sirius by about 45 days later since the ancient Egyptians ~3000 BC, and about 35 days for the Pleiades relative to the ancient Greeks ~500 BC.

So their seasonal alignment is off. Back in ancient Egypt the heliacal rising of Sirius heralded the flooding of the Nile.

541 >> You obviously want more precision than this Sky & Telescope article offers, but they suggest the heliacal rising of Sirius as seen from Memphis,

That's accurate enough. Grok centered on Thebes to calculate it. I remember Guy Ottowell uses Thebes over Memphis as well for his ancient Egyptian origin for astronomical alignments. There's a reason for that, but I forget.

Anyway, it was about June 25th in 2500 BC, sort of centering on the Old Kingdom period. For the Pleiades, it was May 25 in Athens in 300BC.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 13, 2025 02:21 AM (w6EFb)

542 Precession will shift the heliacal rise times by about 1 day in 70 - 100 years, depending on the star's coordinates. As the celestial pole traces the circle, that shifts both declination as well as RA, and so the rise time shift varies.

Even the Gregorian will drift going k 10Ks of years or better, but it's dead on seasonally for the period of human history.

556 >> So, we'll need to skip a leap year in 10,000 years or so?

Yep, although it gets a bit more complicated than that. Due to Milankovich cycles, a complex mess of perturbation cycles, the tropical year (complete cycle of seasons) is getting shorter by a bit, and long term tidal friction is slowing the earth's rotation. This adds up to small, but steadily decreasing number of mean solar days per tropical year.

A proposal that would fix it the best goes something like dropping a 400 year leap year in 3600, then resuming at 4000 AD, but switching to a 500 yr cycle then, rather than 400.

Initially that would be added to few leap years, but after several thousand years would then be adding too many and would balance out. That would keep things in sync, long term average for maybe 15,000 years give or take.

The uncertainty as well as the random factors in the earth's rotation make anything more precise than that impossible that far out. You'd just have to wait until then to see how things played out.

The Gregorian will likely be out of sync by 1 day around 4000 AD or so. That's a bit early due to the shortening of the tropical year and lengthening of the day compared to a static drift calculation with the current tropical year and mean solar day.

559 I thought Stellarium would use the Gregorian calendar, but wasn’t sure. The discussion about the Egyptian calendar in the Wikipedia article on the Sothic cycle suggest it may be off by 50 to 80 years, with the date of the Theran eruption as noted on the Tempest Stele being the bone of contention versus dendrochronology. Others say the Tempest Stele doesn’t refer to the Theran eruption at all! It’s a mess!

Looked it up. The proposal is to drop the leap year in 3200 AD, keep 3600 and 4000 AD, then switch to the 500 year cycle.

565 >> I thought Stellarium would use the Gregorian calendar, but wasn’t sure.

The standard astronomical convention is this. Julian before the Gregorian was first instituted in Oct, 1582, Gregorian thereafter. There are thus 10 days that don't exist. But it wasn't until much later that it became uniform. Great Britain didn't switch until ~1752 (that's the deal with Washington's birthday). So, no matter what you do, there will be confusion in between.

But before Oct 1582, nobody was using it, so they decided to just use the Julian -- imagine the confusion of historical dates if forcing a proleptic Gregorian.

Now, the lack of a year 0 is a problem for the arithmetic as well, so the convention is use 1 BC as year zero, and then negative years before that.

Thus 2 BC is year -1, etc. Year number for BC dates is (1 - Year_BC). That makes the math work out nicely, but using the proleptic Julian arbitrarily back in time. Nobody was using the Julian before 45BC or whenever, but it doesn't matter than far back. No modern person would have any clue about the mish mash of ancient calendar systems used back then. :-)

Now for seasonal purposes, to know if a date was winter, summer, etc, the proleptic Gregorian is much better, but it's non-standard astronomical date numbering. It's relatively easy (hah! -- with a correct library routine) to convert for this purpose.

The Gregorian cycle corresponds to a mean tropical year of 365.2425 mean solar days. As of epoch J2000 (current t = 0 reference for astronomical purposes -- this keeps your t variable from getting ridiculously large -- the reset the epoch every so many decades):

The mean tropical year is 365.24219 ephemeris days (based on the SI/atomic time second), but 365.24217 mean solar days (again using the value at J2000). So there's the slight difference and drift.

As of 2020, the earth has sped up smidge (temporarily) and for these purposes, the mean solar day currently is averaging very close to an SI ephemeris day. But that's only temporary and the slow down continues over centuries.
