Faster SSD's are going to be of much value to mainstream users until Microsoft and AMD what is branded Velocity Architecture to the PC. This is current gen Xbox models. It's PCIe connected SSD inline to dedicated decompression blocks in the processor supported by an OS storage stack that is modernized to properly use it rather than still accommodating storage devices that haven't shipped in new PCs for almost two decades.
Currently PC game developers porting games from PS5 and Xbox Series X/S that really utilize the storage functionality are using DirectStorage, a Microsoft API to utilize part of your GPU to do the decompression task. Typical PC CPUs already have a media engine that would serve but it doesn't have the needed inline connection to the storage. Having to get stuff into main RAM before anything can be done to it is a big delay, when you're trying to create big elaborate game environment that doesn't use tricks to make you not notice the delay when data is loading. Having a lot more RAM than a consoles helps a bit but only so much. It isn't a 1:1 substitute. Posted by: Epobirs at August 08, 2025 04:46 AM (/0z9K) 13

Biden's Dog, do you put anything on the asparagus?
Posted by: Ben Had at August 08, 2025 04:40 AM (HFcKg) - Served chilled with a simple oil/vinegar/Spanish onion vinegrette: - 200 g asparagus - 29.58 ml butter (or olive oil) - 0.25 ml salt #### DIRECTIONS - Preheat oven to 180 C (360 F). - Prepare asparagus by snapping the lower "woody" part of the stem off (if it snaps cleanly you've got the right place; if it is difficult to break try higher up!), and peel the lower section if they're a bit old or thick. - Tear off a large enough piece of aluminium foil to wrap around the bunch of asparagus securely, and place asparagus in foil. - Dot with butter and sprinkle lightly with salt. - Wrap securely, and then wrap an extra strip of foil around the tip end to protect it. - Bake in oven for 25-35 mins, depending on the thickness and age of the asparagus (Mine were done in 30 and I'd say they were fairly average sized). - Try to wait until you're ready to serve before you unwrap them, or better still, serve them still wrapped in the foil. Potatoes: I rub a drop of oil or avocado oil on spuds which were pre-cooked in the microwave.
Oven on 450. Middle shelf. Back until the tops get silver/black in color. Turn over and the same for the other side. Back story on the music selection, from Lyrics Genius:
“Le Freak” enjoyed #1 status atop the disco charts for seven consecutive weeks in the summer of 1978, as well as being the first song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 three separate times. On New Year’s Eve 1977, disco star Grace Jones had invited Rodgers and Edwards to the exclusive widely popular New York City nightclub Studio 54 but hadn’t put them on the guest list. After being denied access by an ignorant rude doorman and despite the fact that Chic’s music was regularly played in the club, the pair angrily left and ending up creating what would become one of the era’s most enduring classic dance-funk songs. 1 of 2 Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 08, 2025 05:05 AM (XQo4F) 24
Continued
As Nile Rodgers told Sound On Sound: We were so pissed off at what had happened. I mean, it was Studio 54, it was New Year’s Eve, it was Grace Jones, and we were wearing the most expensive outfits that we had… We grabbed a couple of bottles of champagne from the corner liquor store and then went back to my place, plugged in our instruments and started jamming. Originally the song featured the lyrics “Fuck off!“ but by the end of the night Rodgers had lightened it up a bit: That night we actually converted ‘fuck off’ to ‘freak out’. First, we changed it from ‘fuck off’ to ‘freak off’ and that was pretty hideous. Then, all of a sudden, it just hit me. For one second, the light bulb went on and I sang ‘Aaaaahh, freak out!’ 2 of 2 Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 08, 2025 05:07 AM (XQo4F) Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 08, 2025 05:08 AM (XQo4F) 26

Sounds much better as "Freak Out" and it has probably lasted must longer than it probably would have as "F off" , because it was a novel phrase Almost everybody gets irritated and uses the f word at least occasionally but it's now ubiquitous from everything from " I got up late" to loathing for politicians. And so, IMO , is boringly redundant.

I've been running a Slackware (that's a linux distro) server as my mail server (dovecot) and NAS (Samba) for ~30 years (JFC!) now. It used to handle DNS (caching and local network authority) as well as a DHCPD server (give IP address and tell the DNS server what that address is), but those functions were passed off to a smaller machine which can easily handle that work.
I've been working in either telecom or telematics since 1995, so a lot of my setup was to figure out how things actually should work in my work environment(s). I would be the last to claim that it's energy efficient or trivial to manage. Posted by: Richard Cranium at August 08, 2025 05:37 AM (+OrhI) 53
Evening to the late Freya's Day toilers, and morning to us early risers! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished.
Chic's "Le Freak" still has a smooth and irresistible sound, doesn't it? And the performers themselves are accomplished and well-dressed. The use of the violins makes for a sophisticated package. Compare to today's "rap" or "soul" artists, and "you too will be sold." I still think Sister Sledge's best song is not that "We Are Family" drek, but the dark and smooth-running "Greatest Dancer." Both "Le Freak" and "Greatest Dancer" helped make 1979 into the last truly great year for pop music (again, to me). Today marks six years since I purchased the big red Buick LaCrosse after the death in a flood of the BMW 3 Series I'd had for only three months. I'd have bought another, but there were none to be had with the interior color I wanted (no black, thanks). So I looked beyond Bavarian Money Wasters, and saw this handsome Buick on the used car lot of a Subaru dealer. I test drove it and liked it a lot. The salesman offered me an overnight test drive. And even before I got it home that evening I knew I was going to buy it.
I could have had a 2017, the next generation, for about the same $$ . . . but the 2017-2019s have that auto stop-start feature, and apparently, on that car, you can't turn it off. Uh, no. That would be a good thing over these horrible roads, but the Buick handles them well. GM offered a sporty-ish package on the car, with stiffer suspension. I'm glad mine does not have that, or a sunroof. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 08, 2025 06:14 AM (omVj0) 92

The latter is really a proxy for the entity that designed and trained the LLM. If your AI engine won the right government contracts, it would likely have to involve an incredible amount of bribes and promises to break, but you would be in virtual control of the entire government and the myriad of people and other groups who would attach themselves to the same LLM that has been endorsed.
