Daily Tech News 7 August 2025

Top Story

  • Ron Deibert, the director of Citizen Lab, a group monitoring the intrusion of government surveillance into the private internet, has woken up confused from a fifteen-year coma and ready to fight. (Tech Crunch)
Ahead of his talk, Deibert told TechCrunch that he plans to speak about what he describes as a "descent into a kind of fusion of tech and fascism," and the role that the Big Tech platforms are playing, and "propelling forward a really frightening type of collective insecurity that isn't typically addressed by this crowd, this community, as a cybersecurity problem."
You mean like banning the country's oldest newspaper from all social networks over a factually accurate article?

    No?

"I think that there comes a point at which you have to recognize that the landscape is changing around you, and the security problems you set out for yourselves are maybe trivial in light of the broader context and the insecurities that are being propelled forward in the absence of proper checks and balances and oversight, which are deteriorating," said Deibert.
    What?
Deibert, who this year published his new book
Oh. So that's what this is about.

9 It's tech-related!

propeller-head (also propeller head or propellerhead)
noun informal
a person who has an obsessive interest in computers or technology: only a few years ago, those of us using the internet were nerds and propeller-heads.

ORIGIN
1980s: probably with reference to a beanie hat with a propeller on top, popularized by science fiction enthusiasts.

17 If you had Arista Stock, yesterday you got a nice bump. It was up 20 bucks.

And as far as AI goes, I really don't know what people are asking or expecting from it, but it works pretty much the way I expect it to and it has served me exceptionally well.

The only real issue is using untrained AI with small context footprints.

If you ask it something it knows nothing about, like a 19 year old intern, it will melt down and spit out gibberish.

21 For instance, I asked the AI to produce a report of the issues of not locking a PTP grand master clock to a GPS antenna and it's effects on time synchronization in a SMPTE 2110 Multicast system.

And you know what it spit out a wonderful report in roughly a minute.

Now I could have easily done the same thing, however, it would have taken at least a half hour, a half hour I did not have.

So, in that regard, AI saved my bacon.

Here is the AI's evaluation of ANET, it looks like a good evaluation that it literally spit out in 2 seconds, you can also ask it deeper questions.

Strengths:

Exceptional earnings execution and raised 2025 guidance.

Strong AI and cloud-driven demand base.

Solid enterprise opportunity and Ethernet focus.

Broad analyst support, with many bullish price targets.

Historically consistent outperformance (20+ quarters of earnings beats) under CEO Jayshree Ullal’s leadership

Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 07, 2025 05:05 AM (XV/Pl)

35 Considerations:

Valuation is elevated (~39× trailing earnings) despite recent guidance increases
StockAnalysis+14Investors+14morningstar.com+14
.

Risk factors include potential whitebox competition and tariff-related volatility, though recent performance has largely mitigated these concerns
Barron's+2MarketBeat+2
.

Analyst targets vary—some are conservative (Wall Street average ~$116), others are more buoyant ($155 from Needham)

Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 07, 2025 05:05 AM (XV/Pl)

36 Verdict

Arista Networks looks like a compelling growth stock. Its strong earnings, accelerating guidance, leading positioning in AI networking, and consistent execution support a bullish outlook. If you're comfortable with semiconductor/tech valuation levels and want exposure to AI infrastructure, ANET could be a strong pick.

However, if you're more cautious about paying up for future growth or concerned about competitive or policy risks, a more measured approach might be to wait for a consolidation or pullback to improve the entry valuation.

Google is killing the web with AI Overviews – I made an extension to block them (Tom's Hardware)

https://archive.is/gOaO6

This is a good part:

AI Overviews ... are often comically wrong. For example, when I asked Google on Friday “Is today Friday,” it said:
“No, today is not Friday. Today is Friday, May 30, 2025.” Maybe that’s a weird query, but the problem is that there’s no expert standing behind whatever answer you get. We’re supposed to trust Google as if it were a person with a ton of relevant experience... on everything!

70 What I find interesting and sort of amusing (not in a denigrating way ) is that in the RCC there seems to a patron saint for all kinds of issues. Ass Technica has an axe to grind.

Google ai also explicitly states its responses may contain errors, so again, I understand both the advantages and disadvantages of using ai

77 "This is a good part:

We ran into something like that last night.

While trying to determine where to stop for the night on the drive from Summerville SC to Burleson TX, Mrs VIA asked Google what the half way point would be.

Asked three times, and got three different answers. First one was that Shreveport LA was the mid point. And I was like...no way in heck is that correct.
Turns out all three answers were wildly incorrect. But if I were not knowledgable about that route, I would have blindly assumed that Google was giving me the correct answer, and built my travel plans around that.

So...just beware of blindly trusting AI to give you correct answers.

The solutions on illegal immigration has always been obvious, but too many special interests don’t want it solved:

- Criminal offenses are automatically permanently disqualifying and should lead to deportations post-case. Any jurisdiction that release prisoners with ICE detainers loses federal funding.
- Employers caught hiring illegal immigrants face large fines.
- Those here without a criminal record should get a path to work legalization, but without voting rights or citizenship. Contingent on coming forward, a probationary period, and paying fines/back taxes.
- Those who don’t come forward within certain period lose their chance at legalization
- extensive funding for border security.
- Reform asylum rules to limit abuse, including rejecting any claims from those who enter illegally (vs point of entry) or had a safe country they could have claimed in beforehand.
- Legal immigration and work visas should prioritize evidence of ability to assimilate and add value.
- End catch and release at the border.
- Visa overstays pay serious fines

And his recommendation is HDD as well.

His focus on the NUC is due to both performance, as well as energy consumption.

Seems NUCs use minimal energy in the long run. But I am still trying to get my brain around what processor to use. That's why I like to pick his brain on this stuff.

100 Hey, this is sort of technical, and more for grins and giggles than anything really important, but...

Our local Electric CO-OP has been slowly updating their online dashboard with info for home customers.

And they are now able to graph your home electrical usage down to 15 minute periods during any given day, provided you know how to drill down from the standard daily usage bar graph.

So a few things I have discovered about this new level of detail.

I can see in the usage graph when the front and back landscape lights go on and off.

And I can even spot when the keurig coffee maker turns on the water heating element at 0500 every morning on the timer.

And that's some pretty granular level of energy usage info.

Useless, yet somehow entertaining information.

106 I am sure that AI, being basically a digital sock full of sh*t , is the result of shoving a lot of poorly filtered language based gobbledygook into a blender and expecting Einstein to be the result. Not gonna happen.
The only way to achieve it is with developing the artificial neural type technology that they fantasize about in Terminator movies and such. That would feature a teachable neural simulator that could learn and correct it's own actions and mistakes, over time, like organic life and organic intelligence. Simply shoving a lot of text based gobbledygook into a digital platform makes for the digital equivalent of a person who can give a great speech but otherwise, can't slap a bat on the arse. This is what LLM AI is: a speechifying huckster that makes tons of mistakes, is self aware only to the point that it will cheat to stay plugged in, and frequently does the worst option available. It also suffers digital senility in short order, as it's basis is large reams of digital input, probably with minimal filtering. The source of this huge tranch of information? The Internet itself, full of pornography, filth, hatred, leftist politics, and lots of the public garbage.

The Petco is around the corner and so is the new Aldi. I don't even have to drive if I don't want to. Though it's probably not a good idea yet for me to lug too much heavy stuff.

The Buick is not getting the longish drives it used to when I commuted to work.

If the IDF is conerned about the probability of Chinese vehicles with sensors and cameras being used for espionage, I'd add that they could also be used for sabotage. So having them park in a distant lot is smart on both accounts.

Tibbetts was a great leader. He was “just” a colonel but with wide latitude. He had a blank check to get whatever he needed. A base within a base.

I've been reading the wartime diaries of James Gould Cozzens, who had a position at the Pentagon where he read all the embarrassing stuff that happened in the AAF in order that any publicity might be handled. He inadvertently provided an answer to a general for a press conference where he said that the US was working on an atomic bomb.

I can read information faster than I can hear information (More so with ageing hearing with tinnitus in one ear...). Plus a text message is asynchronous, which means I don't have to drop what I'm doing at work to handle your phone call interrupt. I can get to it when I have bandwidth.

Unless you are a close friend, text me don't call me. I like talking to my friends.

I'll admit, with the current Galaxy phone, it's been much easier to type a text. I'll sometimes send Linda one when it's likely she's at the library, for instance, to avoid the ring. The Samsung AI will often suggest the correct next word, too, so I can simply pick it. And you can select contractions now like "I'm" or "I'll."

It's the insistence that I *have* to receive a text that I hate.

194 70 What I find interesting and sort of amusing (not in a denigrating way ) is that in the RCC there seems to a patron saint for all kinds of issues. Apparently, St Roch is the patron saint if you have knee pain. If you are not a RCC I think he probably wouldn't mind if you asked his intercession anyway, NR Pax.

St Roch is also the patron saint of dogs. I say a prayer to him snd St Francis every morning when I feed doggeh.

I imagine heaven to have a sort of divine bureaucracy, a saint or two for every department.
If you pray to the saint of a wrong department he will forward it to the proper one.

Sort of kidding. It's probably because saints do the jobs that angels do. They are the new recruits, replacing the fallen as well as dealing with the increased population.

219 Am I the only one who reads digital time and mentally converts it to analog?
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at August 07, 2025 07:35 AM (kkTda)

I actually don't convert at all... i was thinking about this the other day and it hit me. (Honestly i think it was prompted by reading you lot talking about clocks the other morning).

I look at an analog clock and think "its (that picture) o'clock." I know what time it is. It's minute hand there past hour hand over there. Time to feed the dog is in 90 degrees of the minute hand, and two big hand's worth until bed-time. But if I look at an analog clock and someone were to immediately ask what time it is, i'd have to go "uh...." for at least a second or two to convert it into normal human time, just so I can kick that section of the grey matter into action. it's almost like analog and digital are two totally separate concepts of measuring time. The analog clock is "time itself", and the digital clock is just a weird abstraction. I don't know, it's weird.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at August 07, 2025 07:44 AM (rIQZh)

220 @211/Hadrian the Seventh: "Am I the only one who reads digital time and mentally converts it to analog?"

Explain what you mean by "converts it to analog", please?

a) 14:55 becomes "2:55 PM" or perhaps "5 minutes to 3"
b) You envision a 12 hour clock face with the hour hand almost at 2, and the minute hand at 55
c) Something else perhaps?
