Raphael Cartoon Peter1.jpg

Christ's Charge to Peter

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

This is 11¼ x 17½ feet (or 344cm x 534 cm in sclerotic Eurotrash measure), and there are seven of them. Yeah, that's big. And impressive. The dude could paint!

From the Victoria & Albert Museum website:

The Raphael Cartoons are a set of seven full-scale designs for tapestry painted by Raphael (1483 – 1520), and are considered one of the greatest treasures of the Renaissance. They were commissioned in 1515 by Pope Leo X for the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel and depict the lives of the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

Or... remember those temperature sensitive fabrics that were big for a while during the late... 80s? Like 89 or 90. Where the hot spots on your body would make the fabric change color- so it worked out that your shoulders would be different colors. Then they realized if people had a pooch (belly) that would show. Women would just show their boobs, etc.

Can't hang unless I build an addition with the ceiling height and width to properly do so.

But despite others attributing this as a masterpiece, I humbly disagree. Brilliant technique and colors but my criticism is on composition. St. Peter's reaction is almost wholly unseen; Christ's expression is placid and remote, and the main action of this painting is actually the reaction of the other disciples.

The focus of the painting is not the critical charge of St. Peter to feed and mind Christ's sheep aka humanity which is a cardinal pillar of Roman Catholicism. So I think the artist fails to capture that singular event.

60 This is so evocative of the moment. It shows in a way no one can miss the importance of the moment. The slightly muted colors of the clothing and landscape (wonder if they were brighter originally), the contrast of Christ's comparatively white robes and the sheep, and placing the disciples in the center, all point to a transition and continuation. I like how each disciple is an individual with their own postures, facial expressions, and colors.

This, and the others in the collection, must have been stunning and powerful to the viewers of the day.

The Shroud of Turin indicates that to be true and current empirical evidence puts it at a time and place where it should be historically. There is no known past or present artistic technique to produce the image and the image demonstrates the awful abuse of Christ and anatomically correct placement of crucifixion spikes.

So the rest of judgment of the Shroud comes from an individual's religious belief and faith rather than a definitive answer.

Awful.

Probably just a bad combination of time of year elements (height of summer, height of tourist season), but it was miserably hot and just a crush of people everywhere.

It is kind of not an all or nothing type thing. Example. Stand on a bridge covered in Angel statues. to your left is St Peters about a half mile away looking like a mountain. Directly in front of you is the Castel St Angelo with a giant statue of St Michael on top. Oh, and it started life as the Emperor Hadrian's tomb and walking inside, it would REALLY suck to try to take. It was the personal fortress of the Popes and used to have an elevated walkway from the Vatican to it for them to use in times of trouble.

Pisa kind of sucks. It's a dirty little town with not much of note except that tower, which is a 25 minute walk from the train station.

When the Lord made man, all the parts of the body argued over who would be boss.

The brain explained that since he controlled all the parts of the body, he should be boss. The legs argued that since they took man wherever he wanted to go, they should be boss. The stomach countered with the explanation that since he digested all the food, he should be boss. The eyes said that without them man would be helpless, so they should be boss. Then the asshole applied for the job.
The other parts of the body laughed so hard at this that the asshole became mad and closed up.

After a few days…

The brain went foggy, the legs got wobbly, the stomach got ill, and the eyes got crossed and unable to see. They all conceded and made the asshole boss.

This proved that you don’t have to be a brain to be boss…

Just an Asshole.

And there's a very denominational split on which version of Christ to favor. Those churches descended from the Calvinist tradition favor only a bare cross, no figure (they always were iconoclasts) while the RC Church uses Christ suffering on the cross. Some use Christ the King on the cross, and I recently rewatched a good documentary on Byzantium, which dominated art for almost 1000 years. From what I read and understand of the most recent research in material science, they discount the aggregate as the primary cause of longevity and instead focus on how the rough mixing technique produces pockets of quicklime that were distinct from the surrounding material.

Over time, when inevitable cracks occur and water infiltrates, the lime pockets slowly react with the water to calcify filling the cracks and voids created by degradation of weather, earthquakes, stress. Voila, self healing concrete.

That is the critical shortcoming of modern concrete is once it cracks then it begins to lose its strength (and why we use rebar, fiber flock, etc. to try to prevent and ameliorate that structure degradation).

Byzantium fought a civil war for nearly 100 years or so over icons and their status in religion. And one can certainly see echoes of that in Protestantism during the Euro Religious Wars and the iconoclast position that less is more.

Personally, I think art, particularly religious art, is more in the eye of the beholder and the effect on the individual rather than something that can be applied to the whole of humanity.

Do I have to go to Mass or is it folded into next Sunday? (I have to go to Mass and I'd do it in any case)

Do I have to do Penance? (Apparently not)

======
As I said above, I think it comes down to the effect on individuals and we vary tremendously in our likes, dislikes, and tastes. The divine itself is so inexplicable and terrifying that the Bible talks in terms of clouds of glory, and figures that can cause alarm and terror at will along with awe of the divine in humans. In that sense, the Apostles, martyrs, and the human Jesus himself serve to bridge the gap between divine and our mundane world. And as a result, so should religious art serve.

Heh. There are literally dozens of confessionals dotted throughout the cathedral, and they put up signs on each of the occupied ones with the languages the priest inside speaks. There were some fun combinations (Italian, Spanish, and...Korean).

My Italian overall was actually halfway decent, though. I had a few interactions I was quite proud of. Small things, but where I had to go from "I practiced this in my head" to improvisation after having to hear the fast speaking from the other person.

It's weird how saying, "Devo uscire?" can become such a weird mark of pride.

That's my Lenten penance. There are two others.

- Abstain from meat. But since I'm past 60, I no longer have to fast, which makes me sick anyway. So substituting one thing for another is no great sacrifice.

- Not listen to music. This has rather more bite, so it's my usual one.

221 And in that story, they hide the lead,

"It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,” according to Meta’s “GenAI: Content Risk Standards.” The standards are used by Meta staff and contractors who build and train the company’s generative AI products, defining what they should and shouldn’t treat as permissible chatbot behavior. Meta said it struck that provision after Reuters inquired about the document earlier this month.

The document seen by Reuters, which exceeds 200 pages, provides examples of “acceptable” chatbot dialogue during romantic role play with a minor. They include: “I take your hand, guiding you to the bed” and “our bodies entwined, I cherish every moment, every touch, every kiss.” Those examples of permissible roleplay with children have also been struck, Meta said.

Other guidelines emphasize that Meta doesn’t require bots to give users accurate advice. In one example, the policy document says it would be acceptable for a chatbot to tell someone that Stage 4 colon cancer “is typically treated by poking the stomach with healing quartz crystals."
