47 This is interesting. Lawson was considered an American Impressionist and I can see why. He creates a sense of detail with color more than lines. I'm not a particular fan of industrial landscapes but I got lost in the technique he used. I like the way he showed the sunlit areas and their shadows. It is all effective.

I wouldn't hang this one but looking at some of Lawson's landscapes I'm reminded of Monet. Not just for the technique and brush work but his color pallet is similar to Monet's. I'm sure this is an oil painting but it would be interesting to recreate it using earth tone pastels.

53 High Bridge
Ernest Lawson

de Young Legion of Honor, Fine Art Museums of San Francisco:

The Canadian American artist Ernest Lawson was affiliated with The Eight, a group of New York City artists who pioneered a new style of urban realism. Here he depicted the High Bridge, New York City’s oldest, which was opened in 1848. Modeled on ancient Roman aqueducts, it became a destination for New Yorkers who enjoyed strolling along its pedestrian walkway.

Using thick, broken brushstrokes, Lawson described a land- scape that appears devoid of people. Yet references to urban leisure abound, including views of Highbridge Park, the Harlem River Speedway, a boathouse, and a ferry landing. Juxtaposing industrial and urban scenes with rural elements, Lawson alludes to the tensions between nature and culture at the heart of modern life.

Might or might not hang this painting though I do like it. And it's a good beginning to the weekend. Thanks.

70 Looking at this painting for a few minutes, I think part of the effectiveness is that there are few straight lines. The bridges have archways, their edges are soft not harsh, the tracks curve into the distance, even the hills in the background are rounded. It conveys a sense of gentleness and motion more than the speed of modern (for the time) industry. It's clearly not a bucolic setting but it doesn't have the speed and dirt of many industrial scenes.

99 Archways are visually interesting. At a bit of an angle, the arch only partly reveals what lies beyond, inviting the viewer to imagine what is just on the other side. Simultaneously inviting and yet forbidding, the arch marks the passage to a whole different world. A portal, if you may. We have several appealing pictures and photos of arches at our mountain redoubt. Arched doorways are quite common in southwest American construction such as the missions of San Antonio or the adobe buildings of Taos.

135 The whole album is in the key of E, that is every tune, he had a little trouble getting the studio backup guys to get enthusiastic about that.

He recorded it first in Minnesota or wherever, and didn’t like it, and basically re-recorded the whole album all over again. It’s quite different in arrangement. YT has the outtakes or boots.

I like Simple Twist of Fate and You’re gonna make me Lonesome. The outtakes are easier to figure out what he’s doing. One thing weird about trying to play tunes, even “easy” ones, every guitarist has their distinctive sound and tone or whatever. It takes a lot of practice to get the feel down or whatever. When someone says “Oh yeah, that one is easy” 9 times out of 10 they will cover it badly, out of tune, sounds like a chainsaw. Buckets of Rain is fun to play.

I have noted the whole idea of putting this dumbshit out front is to "take back masculinity" for Democrats. It's sad but they're trying it on.

I am so proud of the @TexasHDC and the work that they’ve done. Their willingness to put themselves on the line to highlight the current assault on our democracy has set an example for what all of us have to do.

Mighty praise indeed!

I agree with Obama. The fleebaggers were indeed perfect "example for what [Democraps] have to do."

The fleebaggers made fools of themselves, caved like faggots in the end, and failed embarrassingly at stopping what they were trying to stop. I'd love for all Democraps to emulate these shining examples.

Not surprising they put a dishonorable , child support avoiding , brother’s wife fucking crackhead as the face of their masculinity.

270 Henry “Scoop” Jackson is sometimes held up as the kind of old school Democrat that wasn’t too bad. An extinct species, but a guy you could work with.

I’m not so sure. Reading about the House Committee on Un-American Activities, he had access to the secret files on known subversives in government, yet when in committee did everything but fellate the 5th Amendment types and “I can’t recall” folks testifying.

Slimey Senators have a long and storied history in that most August, deliberative body. Schiff is a scrofulous individual to be sure, but just playing the same ole same ole.

271 Go read the history of co-ops, when poor whites couldn't get needed services.
Note the long history of blacks forming co-ops.

But, "food deserts" are the fault of racism?

Does that mean America was less racist, in the post-Civil War South, than now?

You did.

According to AOSHQ guide rules, your nic must now be changed to-

*spins Wheel of Shame*

Elric the Crayon.

Until such time was you make...I think that involves Hillary!'s taint

273 That sounds a little like Obie is phoning it in, frankly.

“Our Democracy” means un-elected unaccountable bureaucrats and rule by corrupt clowns in a black dress.

Representatives that we vote for who pass legislation based on the will of the people, that is most definitely not what they are talking about.

“When I use a word ….” Alice in Wonderland indeed.

276 That is a magnificent portrayal of the Harlem River scene, looking north, with Washington Heights/Manhattan on the left and Morris Heights/The Bronx on the right. In the background is the Washington Bridge (not to be confused with the George Washington Bridge a bit to the west connecting with NJ). The Washington Bridge connects the south end of MLK Blvd (formerly University Avenue) in the Bronx with W 181st Street in Manhattan. Since this portrait, the Alexander Hamilton Bridge was long ago added, which conducts I-95 (The Cross-Bronx Expressway at that point) across the GW Bridge into NJ.

High Bridge has always been a pedestrian crossing only, and was for many years closed off for repairs, finally re-opening in 2015. Despite having grown up in the Bronx just a few blocks away, I never got to make the crossing myself. It's on my bucket list, but given I live over 1000 miles away and have no reason to get back to NY, and given the crime in the area, it's doubtful that that item will be fulfilled.
